Stark Raving Mad

Editorial Reviews

When the producers of the film Stark Raving Mad sought a progressive dance DJ to inject some momentum into the plot, their natural first choice was John Digweed. Yet this marks the first time the esteemed DJ has done a proper soundtrack, which seems especially odd given how intertwined dance music and film have become in recent years. Working closely with his Bedrock partner Nick Muir, Digweed uses the opportunity to compose a few brilliant new tracks ("Beautiful Strange," first and foremost) and puts together a solid mix featuring Moonface, Evolution, and other worthy artists. Though it never sounds like a film score (the occasional sampled piece of dialogue aside), the record does feel somewhat incomplete without the film. But while Digweed’s relatively controlled vibe keeps this 2-disc set distinct from his usual thump-filled work, tracks like Voyager’s "Time Travel" definitely move, and Digweed’s always-excellent ear makes for an interesting listen. –-Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Amazing !.......2007-06-18

It's the best DJ that I ever heard !

5 out of 5 stars Just amazing...........2006-08-17

Beautiful synth and great space for movie vocals. This really exemplifies Digweed's talent especially making a movie soundtrack. A lot better than Foundations, in my opinion. I really love the 2nd disc, especially the vocal track on evolution.

5 out of 5 stars Americans May Not Deserve This Soundtrack and Movie.......2006-01-26

It seems as though the thought process of releasing this movie and soundtrack wasn't geared towards the U.S. which is sort of sad (almost as sad as seeing this Cd sell new & used for $5.99).I suppose the movie people didn't think it would sell, however I am waiting for my copy of it with great anticipation! I bought the Cd after reading the review for it on a Digweed site, from my local Virgin store, which I never realized held such treasures inside. This Cd may cut off in points and it makes it sound like he was using a slide mixer instead of his trusty Rane, and it certainly gives it a "drop" feel in place of the slow and tranced out mixing he usually delivers. As well as feeling maybe this was an old warehouse, pre-fame Digweed sound that was to become of it. Whatever it was, it worked for the better of switching my mind on the fact that Oakenfold sounds like trash no matter what, and this Cd shows the great talent that it takes to actually MAKE a score for a movie. I never favored the movie "Swordfish", and this furthers my decision to believe that it was just pure glib society trying to make it as art...and this is why I am giving this soundtrack 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars movie music.......2005-12-02

the perfect background accompaniment to any movie you care to imagine....there is a deep,dream-like etherial quaility here...sorta the essence of trance encapsulated...gentle and lyrical at times, dark, relentless, disturbingly intense at others..this collection was a sleeper...i had heard almost nothing about it except here on amazon...i heartily agree with the other positive reviews this is stellar Digweed/Muir in top form...truth or dare? maybe both?....just close your eyes, crank it up and make up your own film if you can't find the original.i think i liked it better than Los Angeles...well,as much anyway.'nuff said. buy it.

CD1: 5 stars
CD2: 4 stars
Overall: 4.5 Stars
Stark Raving Mad is one of those CDs that will sit in your collection and one day you put it back into the changer and bam! It hits you! The first CD is so well done and put together. It has a smooth feel to it and the random quotes add flavor to the mix. The tracks are seamless in transitions and the entire album may pass you by with out you even realizing it. This CD is one of those rare gems most people look over. CD1 is my favorite in overall composition, but CD2 has the most memorable track selections. For some reason Time Travel reminds me of "When Mars Attacks." It has a cheesy and catchy beat that will get stuck in your head. A Better Place has an awesome Drum and Bass bit that makes it stand out in both CDs.

      Product Description

1994, sophomore release by Canadian rocker Steve Holliday, who utilized his great connections in the Canadian scene, and had Harry Hess not only assist, but essentially take over the creation of this entire album. The release features Harry Hess delivering lead vocals of many of the tracks on the album. Seven of the fourteen tracks on the CD were written by Pete Lesperance and Harry Hess, and best of all, most of the backing vocals on the CD are done by Harem Scarem, meaning, the disc packs the exact same classic Harem Scarem punch you heard on their legendary first two albums (self titled, and Mood Swings). If you miss the legendary Harem Scarem sound, as so many do, look no further than this bit of Canadian hard rock history. Released in Japan on the prestigious Warner-Pioneer label, and out of print since 1995. An essential addition to any Harem Scarem collection.
