Air's European-label five-song EP, Premiers Symptomes, may have been a collection of early singles, but when it first came out in 1997 it felt all of a piece. Deploying an array of vintage mid-century instruments (Fender Rhodes, Minimoog, Clavinet), as well as a tuba, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel created a cloistered, lulling sound world that was entirely their own (although, think The Percy Faith Orchestra Covers Brian Eno's Music for Airports and you get the basic idea). By contrast, the recent rerelease of Premiers, with two bonus tracks, sounds like exactly what it is: a collection of early singles. It's not that newcomers "Californie" and "Brakes On" are unworthy, just that their overt funk shatters the tranquil atmosphere this French duo so painstakingly establish elsewhere. I originally heard the first track while listening to KCRW and I knew I had to pick up this album. I wasn't dissapointed.

This is Air's most famous, and arguably best, CD. It is dreamy yet tight and sets the bar for downtempo music. This is early Air before their CDs were full of collaborations.

If you're looking some music for background, to chill to, this is what you're looking for.

Genre Defying.......2005-09-24

This is the best Air record, hands down. The vibe for the most post is similar to the cool jazz of the early sixties, bossa nova, etc. Not that this music easily fits into any genre. But if you're looking for a laid back sound that's not at all boring, look no further.

The last two tracks are a big departure from the first five, but they are also very good, just in a different way. Think of the first five tracks as a chill intro to the spacey funk of the end of the record. The last two songs should get you in the mood to play something more upbeat. Try the Avalanches, "Since I Left You"

Great Album. This is the kind of album I just put on repeat. Excellent for something quiet and atmospheric in the background, but deserves your undivided attention on the first few listens. I don't own Moon Safari, but just a few tracks that I've purchased online. I'm buying it soon, too. Man, these guys are good. The mood that they capture isn't melancholy like so many other chill artists. It's not sappy new age stuff. It's just like walking through the garden and smelling the flowers. Regardless of your fav genre, this is highly recommended.

it's just amazing hearing these singles compilation from AIR, one of my best bands in this genre, the music is so groovy and chill...is excellent to getting relax at work or home or even for a background music for a social gather with friends or even for getting intimate with your couple!!

Very nice ambient music, it's really a jewel, an electronic masterpiece, must get your copy if you're in this kind of electronic music (kinda trip-hop)...these french dudes from AIR really rules!

Premiering.......2005-04-08

Since "Premiers Symptomes" means "first symptoms," it's appropriate that it's the name of Air's collection of early singles, before they hit the big time with "Moon Safari." In this EP, the French duo created a warm, sensual sweep of electronica, lounge and pop music.

"Modular Mix" kicks it off -- a dreamy song that sounds like the soundtrack for an underwater movie. It's a beautiful, smooth, self-assured sound. On the other hand, we get a different vibe after that: "Casanova 70" and the languid "Les Professionals" add a lounge-y sound. And "J'Ai Dormi Sous L'Eau" and "Le Soleil Est Près de Moi" are sweet and slow , almost like a pair of trip-hop lullabies.

"Premiers Symptomes" was compiled of singles released before the hit "Moon Safari," and so it has something of the same dreamy feeling. It's all too short an EP, but it's worth it to get the the romantic blend of ambient, trip-hop, funk and a hint of 60s psychedelic pop -- in a word, sensual chillout music.

Songs like "Modular Mix" have layers upon layers of shimmering keyboard. But "Casanova 70" and "J'ai Dormi Sous L'Eau" favor a more jazzy sound, with synthesized horns behind some twittery synths. On the other hand, the spacey beats of "Les Professionals" sounds like a rainy morning over an alien city. Here we get a good look at all of Air's musical abilities, and the different sounds they would later experiment with in their full-length albums.

"Premiers Symptomes" is a must-have for Air fans, although newbies had better start with something else. Despite the earliness of this work, it's obvious that Air already knew what they were doing.

This is one of the 2 best albums I own. Wanna know what the other one is? "Moon Safari". In a world of music that is absolute bland and emotionless trash, at least we have two French guys packing a few moogs, a rhodes, and a heck of a lot of vocorder action blowing the compotion away.They have inspired me ever so much in my own music.Anyone with ANY taste in music WHATSOEVER will like these 2 musicians as much as i do.

Thirty Minutes of Heavenly Spinning.......1999-04-10

The effervescent horns in Modular Mix, the floating melodies in Casanova 70, the analogue action in Les Professionels, the sitar and Moog arrangements in J'ai dormi sous l'eau, and the romantic tubas (yes, romantic tubas!) in Le soleil est pres de moi prove that Air does not only have a classic album of our time, "Moon Safari", but that their musical journey before it is a perfect one itself!
