3 out of 5 stars Put the needle on "Neon".......2005-01-21

It's must be pretty tough being the sister of a pop icon -- just ask Dannii Minogue, elder sister of pop star Kylie. While it has a naughty smoothness that American pop doesn't have, Dannii's first major album "Neon Nights" is nothing special, a pleasant little clubby album with thin vocals and some 80s-style beats that alternately grate and bounce.

While Dannii doesn't have quite the golden touch that her more famous sister has, quite a few of these tunes are fun and catchy, such as the danceable "Put The Needle On It" and flittery, fast-paced "Nervous." One particular highlight is the rhythmic "I Begin To Wonder," a breathtakingly fast song that switches from light techno to pop at a moment's notice.

Unfortunately, "Neon Nights" has a somewhat dated feel at time -- Dannii relies too heavy on crystal synth in songs like the painful "Mystified," which sounds like a keyboard gone mad. Not to mention the passable "Dont Lose This Feeling," which despite its technically good beats sounds tailor-made for chick-flick soundtracks.

It was inevitable that Kylie and Dannii would be compared in their singings careers, especially as they share the same clubby-synth sound and wispy voices. How the heck can a person objectively look at "Neon Nights," without thinking of "Fever's" infectious beats? Well, taken alone, "Neon Nights" is a fun little club album, with a dash more sophistication than your average dancepop disc.

The dancey synth beats of Dannii's music are guilty pleasures -- there's the sense that you really shouldn't enjoy this fluffy poppy stuff, but it's fun enough that you just can't help it. The slower songs don't fare quite as well -- while they are not terrible, they feel rather lifeless. Minogue should stick to making people dance.

One thing the sisters definitely share -- sultry, wispy voices. Dannii is a bit wispier than her sister, and so her voice tends to get buried from time to time. The songs she sings are much the same -- sultry and wispy, like "Mystified heard it on the grape vine/ Lover on the other line, why you wasting my time?". And it has occasional flashes of nudge-wink naughtiness, such as "Vibe On," an ode to her, um, vibrator.

Dannii Minogue's "Neon Nights" is nothing too special -- a wispy but fun collection of dancey pop tunes, marred by a handful of dud songs. Fun for a party, not for serious music.

5 out of 5 stars Electro Funk at its Best!.......2004-11-18

This album is a more funky electro dance flavour that suits Dannii's sultry image, enough to give Britney Spears a run for her money. The opening tracks, "PUT THE NEDDLE ON IT" and "CREEP"(one of my favorite guilty pleasures on this cd), would be the right sort of sounds to float out across a hot summer's night. The highlight on the album is also the single, "I BEGIN TO WONDER" with its stop start dance beats and a vocal delivery that would keep the crowd on the dance floor. Dannii's dark song-writing powers can compete right at the top of the charts and this by far shows her talent and place in the music industry. This is an excellent addition to all Dance and Electro 80's fan. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Danni Minogue is Awesome!!.......2004-10-29

I bought this album because of Kylie Minogue's "Fever" album and I was surprised that it was so good. "I begin to Wonder" is a great dance, upbeat song. Her voice is so Hot!! As well "Who Do You Love Now" and "On the Loop" is another cool song. If you are a fan of Kylie Minogue, you will really like this album!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Fine.......2004-03-02

I was really surprised by this CD, which a friend had recommended to me last year. After I heard "I Begin To Wonder", I was sold. What a great collection of dance songs! If you like her sister Kylie's FEVER album, you will like NEON NIGHTS. In fact, this album is a lot better than FEVER in my opinion. A bonus is this is an enhanced CD, and has the videos for "I Begin To Wonder", "Put the Needle On It" and "Who Do You Love Now". "Creep" is one of my favorites, a really funky dance number that will have you dancing. "Mystified" is another favorite, urban heavy. "Who Do You Love Now" is a great dance song with Riva. "A Piece of Time" is a great heavy dance track that will have you hitting the repeat button. Other favorites include "For The Record", "Put The Needle On It", "I Begin To Wonder", "Vibe On" and "On The Loop". Overall a really strong dance album that proves that Kylie is not the only talented Minogue member. Hopefully Dannii will get the respect and success she deserves.

5 out of 5 stars neo-disco with a bit of synth at its best.......2004-01-06

A kick [...] offering from Kylie's sister. Dannii does not just sound like Kylie. She definitely has her own thing going on with this album. Mighty Fine and I begin to Wonder and Creep are my favorites, but the whole disc is great. Perfect music for that lousy early morning when you need to get going.

5 out of 5 stars DANNII ROX MY SOX OFF!!!.......2007-04-28

She is awesome and has a kick arse voice. My favorite song is "Put The Needle on It". Dannii looks very sexy in the music video. Even though the song is very sexual, I like it. I also like "I Begin To Wonder". I love this whole album actually. Go Dannii!!!

5 out of 5 stars Neon Nights.......2007-02-26

If Dannii's looking to shed those comparisons to a certain older sister of hers, a listen to "Neon Nights" won't do the trick. Not in the least is this a bad thing- rather, it sounds much like the record Kylie SHOULD have done in late 2003. Whereas "Body Language" came across cold and alarmingly sparse, "Neon Nights" drenches itself in decadent, late-night sounds. Think of an after-hours alternative to "Love At First Sight", and that's the joy of Dannii's record- a darker, sleazier, clubbier rethinking of the brilliant foundation Kylie has already laid down. The album's opening parts are sheer energy- from the positively filthy bassline of "Put the Needle On It" to the blazing electro synths on "I Begin to Wonder". The remainder of "Neon Nights" is a mixed bag, careening occassionally on embarrassing '80s retreads ("Mighty Fine", "Mystified") and striking gold on a handful of delightful pop gems ("For the Record", "Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling"). Admittedly, Dannii's 2001 Euro-trance smash "Who Do You Love Now" with Riva sounds fairly out of place among the squelching retro vibes, as does the closing ballad "It Won't Work Out". But when taken as a whole, "Neon Nights" is the rare dance-pop record that works incredibly well for credible dance snobs as well within cheery top 40

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Pop Album EVER!!.......2006-09-28

All the songs are of such high quality.. there are atleast 10 songs on here that could have been singles, and the others aren't bad at all.. just made more for casual listening.

It is definately one of my favorite albums ever.. GO DANNII!!

4 out of 5 stars Is 5 stars the highest rating?.......2006-08-04

I' ve always hated Dannii. I always compared her to Kylie. I love Kylie, I have over 80 of her cds. I was a local bar when I first was Dannii Minogue's video Put The Neddle On It. It impressed me enough to purchase The full length cd. I loved ever song on the album. So much so that I wore it out. All the cuts stand out. But she shines the most on the cds only balled, It Won't Work Out. This cd stands up to Kylie's best. After enjoying this cd I've purchased everything I could get my hands on of her previous work. Most of which is out of print. Her previous cd Girl is exceptional. Her other recordings show her development. I would highly recommend this cd to anyone who likes energtic dance music. It's one if the best cds, if not the best of last 10 years. While your at it pick up Hits & Beyond it's a must have.

I fell in love with the domestic version of this cd and then I found the import which has 2 remixes and the 3 videos! I totally love the remixes but they are not the extended versions but the videos are great, and the cd is awesome. It kicks ass and I think it is the best buy of the import section!

ALL EDITS "compliments of CD NOW"
As we all know Dannii and Kylie are sisters, Kylie who has been around for many years FINALLY took over the USA's mainstream straight and not so straight music scene, with "Can't Get U Outta My Head". Thanks to the openly no so straight team of remixers, she chose slammed it into the #1 spot for weeks. However her sister Dannii is finally making her way to follow in her sisters heels. I own this CD and, I have to say it is excellent. Every song, has a great beat, some tech. (not techno) but more on a robotic Kraftwerk with crisp, haunting vocals, and electronic acitvated voice enhancers (ala Cher, to a small degree). There are numerous singles and club remixes that are released out there from this CD such as "I begin to Wonder" (remix, has the Dannii singing over Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round)EXCELLENT. "Don't Wanna Loose This feeling" (remix called Don't wanna loose this GROOVE is Dannii Singing vocals over the instrumental version of Madonna's HUGE hit Into The Groove)"Put the Needle on it" has remixes out there that are fairly good, and in addition, the first single remixed from Neon Nights" is "Who Do you Love Now" originally released 2001 has 3 tracks and the video it is excellent. This CD is really great. The bonus Videos with Remixes (not all are the same, you will need to by them seperatly to get the "Groove, Spin or Who Do You Love Now" full length mixes)but gives you "JUST ENOUGH" to tickle your taste buds, and you will eventually buy the CD Maxi Mixes. So. If you are a fan of Kylie, you will be very pleased and surprised with this purchase, there voices are so similiar, if they EVER, did a duet, I do not know if I could even tell them apart. Good Choice of CD BUT it does NOT CONTAIN her latest crowd pleaser "You Won't Forget About Me" (see my review). Dannii has quite a history in the music world that you may not know of, search for "Dannii/the Remixes 1998 released on Mushroom records, with 13 tracks total on a double CD disc set, it really great, she has many of her most popular released singles remixes by some of todays (and 1998) remixers, such as Junior Vasquez/Murk Boys from Miami/Xenomania and Trouser Enthusiasts (these last 2 are the hottest)the mixes range from 6min - 12;07. The remix of Everything I wanted 7:09 is excellent mixed by Xenomania (who also remixed "Believe" by Cher)The 11;06 mix of "All I wanna Do" by T.Enth. and topping the CD is the ouutstanding mix of my FAVORITE "Disremembrance" remixed by T. Enth. also... it clocks in at 12:07 min of PURE POWER. So that is another suggestion along with "Neon Nights" I have worked professionally and, for my own business as a DJ now, and I always go for the remixes, I sometimes may NOT know the artist, but if it is remixed by a familiar name (such as all the above) I will normally buy it. Thanks and hope these suggestions are of help. Jason Prof. DJ

5 out of 5 stars For the Japanese Edition.......2004-06-27

5 Stars!! GREAT CD! Great songs. Dannii Minogue is one of the best! The bootleg mixes are great, the CD cover is different from all other editions of 'Neon Nights' and it looks so much better, and the videos are of high quality and play without trouble.

5 Stars for the Japanese edition of 'Neon Nights'!

(I'll make a review for the USA edition and rate the songs)

4 out of 5 stars It would get 5 stars if I could get the videos to play!!.......2003-09-06

A great dance album and an even better import. With the Madonna and Dead or Alive remixes on here, there's no need to by the CD remix singles in addition to the normal album, to get those. You only get one more mix of each when you do that anyway. The new revised Neon Nights replaces the original I begin to Wonder and Don't Want to Lose This Feeling with the remixes, but I wouldn't want to lose the originals.

I just can't get the videos to play. It says I need a newer version of Quicktime but I have Quicktime 5. I get the audio to play, but no video, it says I am missing a compression file or something. Maybe it's a Japanese incompatibility. When it offers you to install the Quicktime version on the CD, I get a prompt in foriegn characters (not Japanes though, but that may be my key board setting) that won't let me install it. I am going to try this on someone I know's PC to see if it's just my Apple or something.

The cover on this CD is a better photo that the one on the original. The original is included in the liner photos. This one has Dannii in a more provocative pose, and she has one shoe off exposing her black painted toes, and is getting ready to take off the other. This photo may be in the liner notes of the original, but I don't have that one to know.

One other note is that this comes with a small Japanese trading card, with a picture on the front that looks like a real glossy photo. It's inscribed "Lots of Love from Dannii". The photo on the back has Dannii sitting down wearing a leather outfit with black fishnet stockings that only go to her calf (open down to the feet), and some spiky open-toed shoes. It advertises Dannii's Japanese website and is marked Warner-Japan, so I know this did not come with the US, UK, or Aussie Neon Nights!!!

5 out of 5 stars I got the videos to play!!.......2003-09-06

I actually was able to load a version of Quicktime 6 from the Don't Want to Lose this Feeling Maxi Single w/ video, and now I am able to play all 3 videos on this CD! This now gets my 5 star rating as it's a superb dance album, with many great tracks. Who do you Love Now is probably my favorite. Creep has great background bass!

4 out of 5 stars Lovesick dirges with great arrangements........2006-08-03

How can a record so gothic have an album cover so white and pink? The music inside is liquid depression. Seven lovesick dirges anchored with a dripping, chorused bass guitar, synth string sections and a singer that at least doesn't sound like he's trying to channel Morrissey or Dead or Alive with his whisper-sung drawl.

"Vertigo" and "Ghosts" stand out on the merit of their individuality, and the undeniable atmosphere they create. The pull of "Vertigo" is apparent almost from its first notes, with that tear-stained bass heartbeat sitting pretty across from a guitar line that's so simple it seems to go everywhere-- the perfect backdrop for singer Andrew Paley's whisperings. On "Ghosts," Paley sings of porcelain dolls and screaming pixels over a ghostly synth and a pumping drumline. Throughout it all, the bass meditates in the undertow. Elsewhere, "Saltsick" sports an interesting arrangement making use of some outlandish percussion in what sounds like digital steel drums.

If there's one gripe about "Neon Nights, Electric Lives," it's a lack of flow. This is evidenced in the jarring transition between the opener and the somewhat lackluster "Amphibian," which while not a bad song on its own, simply doesn't fit the mood with which "Vertigo" set the table. Yes, it's definitely the same band, no doubt about it, but something "Vertigo" has is missing from many of the other songs here. In the face of a track that soars all over the musical spectrum for over six minutes, culminating in a howling guitar solo, songs like "Canopy" have a tendency to sound pedestrian in comparison.

Gripes aside, though, the Static Age have released a solid, if not brief, debut record in "Neon Nights, Electric Lives," and they pull off the '80s throwback act much more aptly and/or originally than bands like, say, She Wants Revenge. More to the point, Static Age's cultural plagiarism utilizes intrumentation and arrangements coupled with actual songwriting, which is always more entertaining than just trying to sing like dead guys (cough, Interpol, cough).

Recommended if you like Now It's Overhead, Bright Eyes, The Cure, Doves.

      5 out of 5 stars I love this cd........2005-06-10

After seeing their labelmates the Explosion twice and overlooking them many times, my best friend finally made me listen to the Static Age. I was blown away.

This album is better than anything that has been recorded in the past 5 years. The Static Age has such a unique sound and Andrew Paley's voice will blow you away.

Buy this album, and disregard anything negative that has been said about it. It is wonderful.

      5 out of 5 stars Heaven.......2005-06-08

This cd is like heaven. The songs are slow and mellow for when you're just not in the mood for a scream-fest. I find it very reminiscent of Depeche Mode. The songs are love songs, but they're a little dark. Not too dark, but not fairy tale. From the first time I heard the songs Vertigo, Amphibian, Ghosts, and Armory on their website, I knew they were awesome and that I had to pre-order it.

I highly recommend it for anyone that likes The Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division, or Modern English.

2 out of 5 stars review from the Synthesis.......2005-04-28

Forty-two minutes of uninteresting `80s pop in the vein of Peter Gabriel and the Cure isn't my idea of an exciting time. This marriage between the two is an unholy and dull attempt to recreate that post-goth, post-emo dance-y sound that kids with too much black eyeliner like. From start to finish, the Static Age create a layered atmospheric sound using synths, delayed guitars and modulated bass; however, nothing sticks out. Of the nine tracks on Neon Nights Electric Lives, two have been remixed. The AFI cult will eat this up since Jade Puget remixes one of the songs. In conclusion: there is no reason to listen to this unless you want something to pass out to when you're drunk at 4 AM.

There is nothing like this band out today. The Static Age is truly one of the most talented, unique bands coming up in the music industry.

Not only do you get 7 new songs--but you also get two remixes: Amphibian(Pakistan) and Vertigo(Airplanes). The Vertigo remix is one of the best tracks on this album, it almost sounds a little like Depeche Mode, or even VNV Nation.

Everything about Neon Nights, Electric Lives is outstanding. The vocals are haunting and the music perfectly matches that. The lyrics are a little so-so on one or two of the tracks' verses, but it doesn't take away from the brilliance of the record.

This album definitely deserves a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Furs and Cures and Bears oh My.......2004-10-25

This album is incredible. I saw these guys play at CBGB's the other night and they really are like nothing else out there. The band's music is intricate, open, emotional and intelligent. Think the Psychedlic Furs meet the Cure meet the new face of thoughtful new wave rock.

      A+ Kids.

        Album Description

Already familiar to fans of the current rock scene as a founding member, and lead guitarist of Certain General, and founder and leader of 80's garage legends, the Corvairs, Gammage has collated the best 20 tracks from a series of releases issued by French and Spanish labels in the early/mid 90's after the demise of the Corvairs. For these sessions, Gammage surrounds himself with a veritable who's who of the downtown NYC rock scene with members of Certain General, Band of Outsiders, Richard Hell band, Richard Lloyd band, Lydia Lunch band, Feelies, Corvairs, Tongues on Fire, Nails and others helping out on the various tracks. In Phil's world, it's always night, the streets are rain-swept, and he's cruising down the old highway to a border town cantina where the whiskey is cheap, the women dangerous and the morning promises nothing more that another bleary-eyed hangover. As Trouser Press said of Gammage's Night Train (5 tracks of which are reprised here) "(Gammage)! puts personality into darkside Americana echoing Nick Cave's fascinations minus the melodrama. Which might well make Gammage this generation's Hank Williams."

5 out of 5 stars One of best album of 2003!.......2003-12-17

I've been a major Kylie fan for years. Then a friend of mine told me about Dannii, and I was totally skeptical. So I didn't get her album right away. Then later I decide to get her album for the hell of it, and I'm glad I did. Dannii fills my void of being techno/pop music deprived. She's totally awesome, her sound is refreshing, energy-driven upbeat tones, and super catchy lyrics. Kylie's little sister suprised the heck out of me. I'm now totally devoted to the Minogue sisters! Dannii you rock!

5 out of 5 stars Dannii is back!!.......2003-07-12

'Neon Nights' is simply fantastic, there isn't one song that fails to grab me. Even the 'weakest' songs score 8 out of 10! AND Dannii co-wrote most of the songs! Honestly, I can't describe how good this album is, you just have to trust me and buy it.

'Put The Needle On It' - A sexy dance number with plenty of nudge, nudge, Wink, Wink references. Oh yeah, it's Dannii's big sister's favourite (#7, UK). 10/10

'Creep' - Dark and sultry this track is best after dark. 10/10

        'I Begin To Wonder' - Dannii's highest reaching single (#2 UK) 9/10

'Hey!(So What)' - One of my favourites, you won't be able to keep your feet still with this electric pop track which has 'Hit Single' written all over it. 10/10

'For The Record' - A lighter more flirty number, yet still very danceable. 8/10

'Mighty Fine' - A fantastic fluffy pop number that screams 70's. 9/10

'On The Loop' - This time its back to the 80's and acid pop. 9/10

'Push' - Another naughty dance number which hints (very loudy) at sex. 10/10

'Mystified' - This track is more urban and reminds me of J.Lo, only better. 9/10

'Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling' - Dannii's latest single (#5, UK), a light pop track, perfect for summer. 10/10

'Vibe On' - Dannii has fun with this pop track with urban overbites, that is about music vibes pumping from a speaker, not products from Anne Summers! 9/10

'A piece of Time' - One of Dannii's favourites, this dance track is a bit heavier, that sounds similar to a fatBoy Slim track. 10/10

'Who Do You Love Now?' - The garage/dance song that launched Dannii's comeback, another hit (#3 UK) that will have you up on the dancefloor. 10/10

'It Won't Work Out' - A haunting ballad that shows of Dannii's impressive vocals, yet funked up with dance music. It winds you down perfectly. 9/10

'Come And Get It' - Leave your CD player running after 'It Won't Work Out' to find this little gem of a dance track. 8/10

Then after all this the CD is enhanced so you get the videos for 'I Begin To Wonder', 'Put The Needle On It' and 'Who Do You Love Now?' - Plus a image gallery! Now isn't Dannii good to you?
