Frequently identified as an acid-jazz ensemble, the Chicago-rooted collective known as Liquid Soul might be more accurately viewed as a pure funk band. They're energized by a wonderfully wayward, freewheeling spirit again on Here's the Deal, the group's third release. Deal follows 1998's Make Some Noise and their eponymous 1996 debut with another swinging assortment of house-party grooves anchored by Liquid Soul's horn-based frontline--including saxophonist Mars Williams (whose far-flung associations run from Anthony Braxton to Ministry to the Sun Ra Project, which Williams leads with Ken Vandermark), trumpeter Ron Haynes, and trombonist John Janowiak. The 12 selections on Deal (five recorded live) range from funk-heavy rap ("Sure Fire One," "Show Me") to nearly conventional R&B with jazzed-up, Liquid Soul twists ("Sex Tablet," "Rocket Scientist") to a flavorful, Latin-tinged ode to Dizzy Gillespie ("The Diz"). Simone, daughter of Nina Simone, sets two tracks aglow with soulful vocals ("Stop by Monie's," "Dysfunction"). Yet the recording's most involving tracks (along with drummer Dan Leali's Jeff Beck-flavored "Everybody's Got One") are the melded "Sweet Pea" and "Donkey Punch," a reeling, freestyle exercise that cross-pollinates bop, hip-hop, rock and an Asian netherworld before flinging you into a swirl of horn-driven industrial fusion. Definitely worth a listen. --Terry Wood

4 out of 5 stars better than expected .......2005-02-20

Before this album, I had never bought a String Quartet tribute album and tended to overlook them as I normally do with tribute albums. I had been familiar with them through their full album tribute of Radiohead's OK Computer which I've heard and was very impressed by. However I still never bought anything by them as from observation they seemed to pay tribute to both some of the best artists in this generation (The Smiths, The Cure, Radiohead, Sonic Youth, and Elliott Smith for example), yet also some of the worst (Simple Plan, Godsmack, P.O.D., Linkin Park, etc. etc. etc.) and that made me feel less able to judge them as a whole.

However when I saw this album in a store how the Pixies being my favorite band, I bought it without giving it a second's thought and I listened to it immeditely when I got home. After my initial listen I found the album to be very interesting and enjoyable. The songs they selected (mostly from Surfer Rosa and Doolittle) are for the majority all are the best known Pixies songs that you'd find on either on of the best of compilations or hear at one of the reunion shows. The only expection to that is the presence of "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons" from Trompe le Monde which will stick out jarringly in the track listing to any non casual listener of the Pixies. However, it transforms very well into a classical piece and I would include it along with "Debaser", "Where is My Mind?", and "Velouria" as the best covers on the album.

On the opposite, this album does have it's share of negatives, and it's unfortunate that most of them are from sloppy errors not within the music, but on the packaging. First off the track listing displayed on the back cover and 2 times in the booklet is wrong. I assume this has to do with a last minute change to the track listing after the packaging has been printed. Whatever the case may be (being too cheap to reprint it?), this error is very unprofessional. Also on the back cover the album description states "as virtuous string players cut to the edgy essence of 'Bone Machine'" when Bone Machine isn't even on the album. Besides those frusturating unforgivable errors, my only complaint musically is that the original track by the quartet on this album "Burned for Good" while good in it's own right simply doesn't fit in here and lessens the feeling of the album as a whole. These "original compositions" appear to be on every quartet release, so I guess it's just something that the band enjoys to do regardless of the result. Another semi-complaint is that there isn't more songs from albums besides Surfer Rosa and Doolittle or songs that are lesser known but favorites of devoted fans. "Levitate Me" would have been great in my opinion in this classical form. As well as "Is She Weird?", "No. 13 Baby", and "Into the White". So in summary I say that no matter if you're a new or casual Pixies fan whom the Wave of Mutilation compilation was your first Pixies release, or a hardcore Pixies fan and you don't completely hate classical music, I think you will enjoy this album.

Here's the correct track listing...
1. Here Comes Your Man [Doolittle]
2. Gigantic [Surfer Rosa]
3. Caribou [Come on Pilgrim]
4. Debaser [Doolittle]
5. Cactus [Surfer Rosa]
6. Velouria [Bossanova]
7. Gouge Away [Doolittle]
8. Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons [Trompe le Monde]
9. Wave of Mutilation [Doolittle]
10. Monkey Gone to Heaven [Doolittle]
11. Where is my Mind? [Surfer Rosa]
12. Burned for Good (original composition)

I heard this on KCRW the other day - it was the arrangement for 'Here comes you man' and it was great fun. This album has lots of swell possibilities.

This is a very commanding and intriguing score. Composer Adolph Deutsch did a tremendous job scoring this one. Conductor William T. Stromberg and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra once again come through with an excellent recording intrinsically representing Adolph Deutsch's perspective.

4 out of 5 stars A Tribute to Adolph Deutsch..........2005-04-02

In the shadow of the big film score trio of the 1930s and 40s, Steiner, Korngold, and Waxman; there were other distinguished film composers such as Adolph Deutsch. Thanks to this now budget priced reissue on Naxos, we are given a varied program example of his film score output from 1941-44. John Morgan again as in most of these projects has reconstructed and quilted together suites to preserve talent that would go down in obscurity. Deutsch was a contract composer at Warner a good part of his career, where the five selections on this disc are drawn. Oddly Deusch had a popular music background, but was not given any musical assignments. He was however thrown a comedy or two, one which was the Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan farce "George
Washington Slept Here". Through whimsical dressed up folk themes, we see the mishaps of a couple struggling to get a supposed historical farmhouse up to par. Nice to have a comedy score for a change! We get two Bogart scores, ofcourse "Maltese
Falcon" and "High Sierra". In Maltese the music is subtle and mysterious using economy of instruments; yes, because the studio was on a budget. "High Sierra" also was budget restricted, but Deutsch still managed a melody Steinerish score depicting the great natural locations of California's Sierra Mountains. In the "Mask of Dimitrios" we get a tension filled mood score as Peter Lorre pursues a deadman walking. "Norhtern Pursuit" a WWII
espionage thriller gets a big orchestra illustrating icy Canada and patriotic themes as well as Nazi darkness. The bars of V victory from Beethoven's fifth end the film abruptly. Mosfilm Studios does another good job with the recording, full and spacious.

5 out of 5 stars You're a freak if you think this disc is weak.......2004-12-02

I have not listened to any of the other Liquid Soul albums, but evaluating this album independently, I have to say it rocks. If the other albums are so awesome that they make this album seem weak, then I can't wait to listen to them. Honestly, I can't imagine how anyone who likes this genre of music can say this album is weak. It's truly fantastic.

4 out of 5 stars I like it.......2002-11-10

More good stuff from the Chicago outfit. My least favorite of their 4 discs, but still good. Different from their first 2 discs.

5 out of 5 stars NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY!.......2001-11-20

this cd was nominated for a grammy! not many people know that. it's a creative, driving, funky, fast-paced, smart, emotional, reflection on the best band in this category (funk/acid jazz). it's inevitable when a band is as talented, and plays together as much as they do, for a cd of this caliber to be a result of all that work. for a long time they were the house-band every sunday night at the double door in chicago. they were bound to put something like this out sooner or later. it's a testament to the scene they came from. a scene a lot of people are missing. this cd (along with their previous 2) are direct reflections on the level of creativity and intelligence these kids have when they grab their instruments. incorporating free-style vocals in a few tracks with a horn section reminiscent of earth wind and fire, old chicago, and the dirty dozen brass band, they create unique and fascinating music. anyone, who is a classic jazz fan will love what this band has done to a type of music that's underappreciated and under-recognized. it jams, it's fast-paced, and it's probably one of the best cd's you'll ever buy.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-08-22

Well, at least the first reviewer from Chicago agrees with me. This album is very weak, at least, compared to the band's first two albums.

Where's the Dirty MF? His freestyle lyrics really made the vocal tracks great. Simone may be a fine singer, but she's more about the R&B and not enough about the funk. Also, the band itself seems to have forgotten how to jam. Most of the tracks on this album sound very engineered, unlike the first two which had a good deal of spontaneity and creativity.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and buy their self-titled debut or the follow up "Make Some Noise." There you'll find the really good Liquid Soul.

5 out of 5 stars CHMOKIN !.......2001-06-21

This CD is one of the best CD's in my collection. Every song is smokin.. Not a bad song on the CD. The horn section ranks up there with EWF. A little bit of Jazz undertones ontop on some of the funkiest beats around make this a very pleasurable CD to add to your collection.

I first found this band from my six year old cousin and although at first the lyrics were a bit disturbing, I soon grew to love them. The beat of the music is fantastic and stays in your head forever. I love the vocals, because I'm a big fan of that vocal style. I also love how they add little hidden things like if you let number eleven sit there even when it stops playing it'll go on and say stupid yet amusing things. I like how they're underground, but they definately deserve to hit it big.
