Sheila E is one of pops icons. This is a reflection of her great artistic ability.

I bought this for my dad after he and mom went to a Ringo Starr concert. He thought she was just fabulous.

5 out of 5 stars A Glamorous Album.......2006-09-02

I first heard the single edit of "Glamorous Life" on an '80s compilation. Let me tell you, that was nothing compared to the 9 minute full version.

Sheila E. is a fantastic drummer, right up there with Keith Moon and other greats. She sings great too. Her mix of styles range from light pop to deep R&B. The resulting CD is very good.

The title track, "A Glamorous Life," is easily the standout track here. I also enjoyed the beautiful "Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar." Some of her drum solos on this CD are quite amazing too.

Earlier this year, I had the priveledge of seeing Sheila E. perform with Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band. Too bad she only got two solo numbers. But it was a great show.

Buy this CD, and hear what good drumming sounds like.

4 out of 5 stars Great album, terrible sounding CD.......2006-06-06

If you are a fan of this recording then get it on vinyl. Find a copy pressed in 1984 and dont get a reissue. It sounds way better than the CD. The CD sounds so bad they warn you on the back of the CD. Most of the Prince related stuff from the early 80's have this problem.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Believe The Hype.......2006-05-04

This CD is boring- somewhat original but boring. The only good song on it is "Glamorous Life" and I downloaded that. Skip this unless you're over the age of 40. Definetly skip Trina's "The Glamorest Life" which is 100% trash.

It seems pretty clear that Ronan Tynan has no intention of resting on his laurels. Despite a stunning string of world-dominating, top-selling releases as a member of the much-loved Irish Tenors--not to mention his accomplishments as a champion athlete, an M.D., and a memoirist (see his recently published Halfway Home: My Life 'til Now)--the singer has now released his debut solo effort on Sony Classical. No matter which member of the Irish Tenors happens to be your favorite, My Life Belongs to You is a treat, affording as it does a chance to bask in the deeply expressive, mellifluous voice of Tynan. He has chosen his selections well and is equally poised and tender in classics from Mario Lanza ("Because You're Mine," "I'll Walk with God"), Broadway, and sacred music. What's especially wonderful is the opportunity to hear Tynan's emotionally gripping vocalism from so many angles. The mixing by Frank McNamara gives a lovely old-time feeling to the orchestral playing--a bit like a treasured old sepia photograph. A bonus track of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" is included. --Sarah Chin

1 out of 5 stars He should have stayed with Irish music........2007-04-04

Ronan Tynon was my favorite of 'The Irish Tenors;' so I was excited when I saw this cd. But, it was a big disappointment. The singing is mechanical; there is no personality, no emotion. The 'bonus track,' an unaccompanied "God Bless America," serves only to accentuate the absence of feeling. He should have stayed with Irish music.

A real sleeper in the Ronan Tynan series. First rate.

I assume this is a great cd, since we own 3 Ronan Tynan cd's. This however was a gift for a friend , bought specifically for the song "God Bless America." He did, however rave about it to us, so it must be terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Ronan at his most Emotional.......2005-11-26

This cd "My Life Belongs to You" is Ronan at his greatest. Each song he sings shows the great emotion he has in his voice. Ronan can sing each one of these to me anytime. He has great clarity and emotion as he sings. Love the CD "My Life Belongs to You."

5 out of 5 stars greatest living tenor.......2005-03-22

Ronan Tynan is an amazing vocalist, and an amazing man. I'd never heard of him until, in the 2001 World Series, he sang "God Bless America," at Yankee Stadium. From then on, my husband was hooked. He bought this album as soon as he heard of it, and his culture level, musically speaking, is usually -----. But this is the exception that proves every rule. "my Life Belongs to You," "You'll Never Walk Alone," and above all else "The Holy City," are faves of his. This is easily the best recording of "Holy City," still in print. Nelson Eddy did the original, but sadly, no recording of it is known to exist. if only, lord, if only ... but until then, this is a masterpiece. "Roses of Picardy," is a thousand times better than the jazzed-up version of it Frankie Layne did. who was he kidding? This is a slow, tender ballad, and Tynan brings it off with spectacular flair. There's none like him--and where would we put one if there was?

5 out of 5 stars "The Definitive Recording".......2004-04-02

Having finally listened to the Original Broadway Cast Recording of this masterpiece, my verdict's in and clear: the London Cast Recording is the definitive version.

The voices of the London Cast are, to a man (and woman) far superior -- this is most obvious when listening to the Quartet who open the show, and act as the chorus. The American artists, while excellent, simply can't compare to the power, range and tone of the Brits.

The arrangements are gorgeous, the choral work astounding, and the version of "The Miller's Son" found here will floor you. Not only the best recording of this particular show, but possibly the best recording of any Sondheim show available on CD -- Sweeney Todd is the only other contender, for my money.

The Orginal Cast Recording is great for a historical value. The British Cast is what you listen to when you want to hear the best show you'll never have the privilege of seeing. It's ruined me. But I'm not complaining.

    3 out of 5 stars Sondheim's Greatest.......2003-07-10

I'm of the mind that A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (and SWEENEY TODD) are Sondheim's two greatest works. Why? Because they drip with intelligence and exist entirely within the world of the music. NIGHT MUSIC is propelled by the steady pulse of 3/4, creating the impression that none of the characters would ever come to the realization that they are merely parts being acted and presented on stage--it happens in its own little universe. It's so yummy...

Having said that, I conclude that the perfect cast album could only be completed with the physical presences of Desiree Armfelt and Fredrik Egerman and the rest of the gang. It seems that, when approaching these personalities, actors and actresses treat the music as the music and not as a phase of the dialogue--they don't attack the parts with the brand of boldness and self-importance that each of these characters possesses. The London cast album suffers from such problems. None of the performers have the arrogant voices needed (unfortunately, only a couple have achieved voices somewhat-worthy of the score). Henrik cannot hit the high notes (he goes into falsetto); Charlotte is too shaky to be sufficiently biting; Fredrik seems too feminine; the Count--goofy instead of condescending--seems molded from Sesame Street. The quintet features voices too uneducated and careful. Still, Anne is cutely bubbly (even in voice), Petra is a fine belter, and Hermione Gingold as Mme. Armfelt really makes the listener savor every consonant in her speech. It is an excellent archive of Sondheim's greatest. I would recommend this over the New York cast simply because Jean Simmons creates the closest Desiree I could ever imagine.

2 out of 5 stars Not comparable to the broadway recording.......2002-09-03

The performances are adequate, in some cases skillful, but from the opening note of the show (which the chorus member, in a misguided attempt at humor, aborts in order to insert a racous throat-clearing), this recording lacks the taste and dignity of its Broadway counterpart. I do not recommend this recording.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful CD release.......2002-02-15

I, ofcourse like so many other reviewers of the same cd, own both the London and original Broadway cast albums, and frankly the London recording does laps around the original. First- I will admit Jean Simmons is not the ideal Desiree, but what she lacks in beauty and glamour makes up for Glyniss Jhon's creaking melodies. There is no song on this recording that is worse then the original, and very few actors ( ofcourse, who could top the original Fredrick, definately including this one). Anne is supurb. Her voice is extremely beautiful, and makes up for the corny fluffieness of the original Anne, and her expression in such songs as " A Weekend In The Country" is simply hillariously funny. This Charlotte is also devistatingly wonderful, with her delicious voice, although you can't realy balance the two Charlottes out (the other from the original), as they play the charector with much difference. This Petra is also stunning, especially in "The Miller's Son," which is recomended in all of these reviews. And what a great operetta Quintet, along with Hermoine gingold's wonderful aged performance. All the male parts are also met to the very top, especially Henrick.
A few of my favorite songs on this album is the wonderfully light and fast paced, elegant little romp of "A Weekend In The Country," and "The Glamorous Life" (which has always been my favorite song from the production, with a much better Fredricka then the origianl).
In conclusion, this recording should certainly be bought by "A Little Night Music" fans, and especially Stephen Sondheim,in the words of another reviewer, who's lyrics are the real star,

    5 out of 5 stars a beautiful recording.......2001-12-19

After proving to producers that she could handle performing the role of Desiree on the National Tour, Jean Simmons was asked to come to London to debut with the show at the Adelphi Theatre. Running for a little over 400 performances the show also featured Hermione Gingold reprising her role of Madame Armfeldt.

Ms Simmons is quite affecting as the flighty and insecure Desiree who feels she is ready to pursue romance after years of broken promises and false hopes.

Gingold, now qute comfortable and honed in her role; performs the comical and contemplative "Liasons" wonderfully.

Stephen Sondheim's most complex and multi-faceted score is given a grand treatment here. Almost certainly this is Sondheim's most interesting and most beguiling score which runs the entire gamut of emotions.

A must for all true musical theater fans.

The premier stage composer of his time, Stephen Sondheim has also contributed a substantial body of work to the big and small screens, explored in this 65-minute collection by the Varèse Sarabande stable of artists. The best known is Warren Beatty's 1990 live-action cartoon Dick Tracy, which won Sondheim an Oscar for "Sooner or Later" (covered here by Ally McBeal's Jane Krakowski). This CD includes "Back in Business" as well as the three songs also released on Madonna's movie tie-in album. Other rarities include "Dawn" and "Sand" from the unproduced film project Living Out Loud, the revised version of "The Glamorous Life" written for the 1978 feature film, and "It Takes All Kinds" from The Bird Cage. Orchestral selections include three suites taken from the film score of Stavisky and the gorgeous ballad "Goodbye for Now" from Reds. The major piece here is five songs written for the 1967 television drama Evening Primrose and covered by golden-voiced Liz Callaway and Gary Beach. The recording may not have the star power of an earlier recording by Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, but it's simply and effectively performed here. --David Horiuchi

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What can you lose?.......2000-01-29

Sondheim's little-known work for the big and small screen get presented in this enjoyable compilation. Fans of Sondheim's stage work might be extremely surprised to find the master trying his hand at several pop-flavored tunes. Gary Beach and Liz Callaway do a magnificent job with the four songs from "Evening Primrose" (and is my preference over Mandy Patinkin's over-hysterical rendition with Bernadette Peters), with particular beauty found in the stunning duet "When?"

Sondheim even tries the cheesy disco thing, with "It Takes All Kinds", cut from "The Birdcage". A more thrilling piece of ear candy has never been heard. Although the movie version of "Glamorous Life" can be heard on one or two other compilations and the movie soundtrack, this is one of the best.

I wish the album was truly comprehensive (tracks which have gotten more exposure, such as "Sooner or Later" "Can That Boy Foxtrot" and "Water Under the Bridge" are omitted), but the gems it contains more than compensates. An important album in any Sondheim fan's collection

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant overall, with some invaluable rarities.......1999-05-07

The best moments from this umpteenth collection of music by Broadway supercomposer Stephen Sondheim are the (remarkably dissimilar) selections from 1990's "Dick Tracy" and the obscure 1960's TV musical "Evening Primrose," some of which have never before been recorded. Other items are less memorable, including some regrettable disco/80's pop pastiches from "Singing Out Loud" and "The Birdcage." The selections from "A Little Night Music" and "Stavisky" received sharper performances in the original soundtrack recordings ("The Glamorous Life" can be found appended to the newly remastered Sony/Columbia recording of "Night Music"s original cast; the complete soundtrack to "Stavisky" is available packaged with the must-have 1985 concert recording of "Follies."). This CD should be invaluable to avid Sondheim collectors for the "Primrose" numbers, dynamically sung by Gary Beach and Liz Callaway. Those less fanatic will probably find this a pleasant and workmanlike, but not particularly outstanding recording.

Terry Trotter abandons his usual jazz trio for this solo piano exploration of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. It thus has more of a classical feel, an appropriate treatment for Sondheim's operetta-like original score. Trotter's arrangements range from the rollicking "Night Waltz" and the funky "Remember" to the hypnotic patterns of "Later" and the piano arpeggios (the stage character was practicing piano) of "The Glamorous Life (Stage Version)." Most notable, however, are the ballads, and Trotter brings out all the lyric beauty of "Night Waltz II," the movie version of "The Glamorous Life," and the inevitable "Send in the Clowns." A gem. --David Horiuchi

    4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......1999-11-08

A lovely CD...personally, I thought the tempos were just a little slow for superbness. Very interesting arrangements into jazzy Night Music songs. I found it to be pleasing, but not absolutely THE best.

4 out of 5 stars New York Dolls - 'The Glamorous Life: Live' (Big Ear Music).......2007-07-11

This thirteen track compilation is actually a collection of cuts from two other compilation releases, 'Seven Day Weekend' and 'Red Patent Leather'. Some are live, some are good sounding demos. Tunes here I dug the most were "Jet Boy", "Who Are The Mystery Girls?", "Trash", the "Ain't Got No Home / Dizzy Miss Lizzy" medley and "Pills". Would be a nice addition to either a newcomers or even a long time fan's stack of CD's. Good choice.

2 out of 5 stars recorded with a pocket tape recorder.......1999-07-20

The sound quality of the first 4 songs or so is tolerable, after that the sound quality goes right down the tubes, it should be a crime for someone to release a product of this quality.
