Product Description
Perhaps one of the most interesting musical trends of the past couple of years is the number of fine acts coming out of Norway. Think Kings of Convenience, Royksopp and the criminally ignored Magnet. Now you can add to that list Annie, perhaps best described as the Scandinavian Kylie. With the release of the first single, 'Chewing Gum', the NME was quick to name it Pop Single of the Year. For that track, Annie has recruited the help of producer Richard X (Sugababes' 'Freak Like Me'), who brings his trademark squidgy basslines and synths to the proceedings. It is indeed perfect pop. That said, 'Heartbeat', 'No Easy Love' and the Madonna-sampling 'Greatest Hit' (which actually dates back to 1999) are better vehicles for Annie's voice. These songs are more classy, less trashy, due in part to lighter production-the good clean air and fjords are almost tangible in her vocal tones. 679 Recordings. 2005.

Norwegian singer/songwriter Annie (Anne Lilia Berge Strand) makes her full-length debut with what must surely be the year's sunniest album. Not since the days of The Tom Tom Club, Bananarama, and "Lucky Star"-era Madonna, has dance-pop been this fun, this bouncy, this unabashedly optimistic (1999 single "Greatest Hit" even samples the latter's "Everybody"). So don't say you haven't been warned: Anniemal is a pretension-free zone. With its "Oh no, oh no / You've got it all wrong / You think you're chocolate / But you're chewing gum" refrain, 2004's insanely addictive single "Chewing Gum" is the jewel in this sparkling crown. The R2D2-like bloops and bleeps and Annie's sweet "ah-ah-ahs" and "la-la-las" just make it shine all the brighter. Hippie-disco extravaganza "Come Together," which tops the seven-minute mark, is another standout, while the sentimental "My Best Friend" is, arguably, the only clunker on one of 2005's most notable releases. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Album Description

Annie's Norwegian blend of spiky pop and electro has quickly made her one of the most hotly tipped new artists across the globe. Already embraced as a musical force to be reckoned with, she is being championed be the likes of Mylo, DFA, LCD Soundsystem, Rob Da Bank and Scissor Sisters.

5 out of 5 stars "Keep it comin', baby, can you dig it?".......2007-03-07

From the airy, ethereal opening of the "Intro", to the frenetically chirping keyboards of the title track, to the melancholy fade out of "My Best Friend", this is a thoroughly enjoyable record. (This record will forever be linked in my mind to the summer of 2006, when I discovered, and continued to play, the heck out of it.) Her sampling of Madonna's "Everybody" on "The Greatest Hit" is genius, and Annie's take genuinely adds something special to the original as she makes it her own. Other favorites on this record include "No Easy Love", and "Heartbeat", the perfect song to listen to right before you leave the house on a Friday night to meet up with your friends to go dancing. I can't wait for the next album (which I read somewhere should be coming out by the end of 2007... I'm sure will be worth the wait).

I love this CD. It's one incredible piece of sweet, sweet Electropop!

Why isn't this woman on the top of the charts yet? Or at least the dance charts?

Buy this CD and support Annie!

5 out of 5 stars I think this is one of the best albums I've heard this year........2005-10-01

Ten out of 11 excellent tracks makes for an excellent album. I wish we had pop music like this in our charts rather than all of the disposable music that our public eats up. What a waste! But not this album as it's amazing. Having been able to catch Annie live at Mighty in San Franciso was also a great thing. She performed all the tracks off the album and she was great. My favorite tracks are Heartbeat, Anniemal, The Greatest Hit, Chewing Gum, and Alway's Too Late. Like I said though the whole disc is amazing. Forget your Britney Spears and other talentless pop stars and get this album as it will blow the talentless artists music away!

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Very TOM TOM CLUB! GREAT FUN!.......2005-09-04

This is the perfect example of GREAT POP music - interesting but most especially FUN! I defy anyone to put this on and not bounce around the room or down the street! Typically, American radio ignored it in favor of this hip hop garbage they seem to be pushing these days, which is a shame. This is a great sunny summer recording - and it brings to mind immediately the heyday of TOM TOM CLUB's first album with "Genius Of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood". This will ALWAYS sound good because it is timeless, beautiful fun. It will be interesting to see what this Annie does in the future. If you are reading reviews and wondering if you should by this - by all means - ADD TO CART!

5 out of 5 stars Camp, Kitsch, & Smart too!.......2006-11-13

Hailing from Norway, not far from pop capital of the world Sweden (ABBA, Ace of Base, et al.), Annie's debut record "Anniemal" is a sweeping, dizzying, & sexy trip. It seemed though that this record was more of a critical darling than a commercial one, which is a shame, since this was one of the better pop records I've heard in recent memory.

Annie sets up shop as the charming Euro-girl next door, placing herself in unique, tried & true (yet never stale) pop arrangements. Richard X produces some of the record, as well as her deceased boyfriend Erot, amongst others. The sounds literally "pop" ("Me Plus One"), chug charmingly along ("No Easy Love", "Always Too Late") or simply just charm with a dilly sense of humor ("Anniemal").

Annie's voice evokes latter-day "Fever" era Kylie Minogue, with early trashy/sensual Madonna undertones on two of best cuts: "Chewing Gum" & "The Greatest Hit". The first, lyrically is rather clever, as she uses the analogy of gum to describe men who are merely stops along the way, & not the mainstay "chocolate" she is looking for. Annie's posturing bravado, yet unassuming sounding voice (cue Kylie reference I made earlier) makes this song a surefire winner. It comes off as intelligent & camp, not moronic unlike another obnoxious "pop" singer (Fergie). The latter, "The Greatest Hit" brings in the Madonna not just in tone vocally, but musically. This cut samples Madonna's first single "Everybody" to great effect. Sly, sensual, & with a wink of smuttiness politely tucked away underneath the lyrics, this is probably the best song on the record. Did I mention how she uses handclaps & tongue clicking together on this cut, you have to hear it to believe it.

Lastly, Annie brings some late 1970's disco-toned pop on "Heartbeat" & "Come Together" respectively, the latter winning the price for bringing this across in it's epic scope.

Overall, Annie brings the fun & the coyness, without sounding stupid, or tired. One can only hope for an IMMEDIATE follow-up that has the same similar quality, but with the added push of promotion to show these other pop-wannabe-tarts how to do it right. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very, Very High Quality Pop Album.......2006-10-18

Really well done by Annie! All the songs are extremely catchy and unique in their way. No way at all repetitive, but doesn't take away from the fact that all the songs are absolutely great.

Can't wait for the next album!!

    5 out of 5 stars Happy pop.......2006-09-09

Even the songs about bad relationships make me happy. Oddly enough this is an album I work out to...

    5 out of 5 stars Annie rocks.......2006-05-12

this cd is super tight, if you like any kind of electronic dance music, this cd is for you..reminds me goldfrapp and the knife and kylie minogue..awesome cd from start to finsh, extremely catchy and fun music. Annie Rocks!.

5 out of 5 stars Floods Pleasure Centers Like Chocolate-Flavored Morphine.......2006-03-31

Anniemal is an unqualified masterpiece that fell into my i-Pod due to a brief review in Mojo magazine. Once it's been inside your head and left, a dull ache spreads from the brainstem downward to every extremity, until your finger taps "replay." This is the kind of LP you listen to 100 times in the first three days, and then 150 times each day beyond that, until you finally melt back into your armchair and grow embittered over having to wait for her next album to fall like manna from the clouds. I am 38 years old, but I wrote her a letter of thanks after hearing "Heartbeat." Buy this, borrow it, or steal it.
