This expansion of the Gap Band's 12" Collection by two cuts adds up to the Oklahoma funk outfit's definitive statement. Excising drab ballads and pulling together lengthy but consistently exciting mixes of signature tracks such as "You Dropped a Bomb on Me," "Party Train," and "Burn Rubber (on Me)," this album points to the group's best work as some of '80s funk's most audacious and entertaining music. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars SO - You Want a TASTE of Da Funk.......2006-04-15

NO Digital Sampling/No Streaming/No Looping/ Music Created within a period of time where talent was required. You can't fake da FUNK. If you are truly seeking a toe tapping experience where a group of gentleman take syth & bass and create a block party where you can't stop feeling the beat. Then you are in for a treat. Go and pull up the kids and let them listen to where their current music has come from as no talent artist get rich off of the foundation of the funk. The GAP Band is off the Mother###### Chain.... (LIVE or In Stereo)....

5 out of 5 stars I am SO loving this CD!!.......2001-07-17

This was the STUFF when I was a partying chick! I put this in as soon as it came to the house, and I was transported back to that time-what great dance and just plain groovin music! THIS CD WILL STAY WITH ME ALWAYS!!

5 out of 5 stars great.......2000-02-23

this disc reflects the grand Grooves of the Gap Band.it adds more layers of funk.the Horns&Bass are dead square in the Pocket.and it takes nothing away from the vocals.they never lost the Groove during the Synth&drum Machine Happy 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Gap Band 12" only way to appreciate them.......1999-06-26

The Gap Band bucked the trend of syntho beat and was one of the first bands to use heavey base lines in their music. They have got one of the most wicked grooves of the era, and their rein on the dance floor ruled for 6 yrs solid. The version of Burn rubber on this cd is the only one any true funk/dance fan wants to have

4 out of 5 stars Another Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"While most Rick Astley obsessives likely own all of the material he issued during his artistic peak in the late '80s, this special collection of edits, remixes, and extended versions of some of his best-known work is ideal mainly for completists and club DJs only. Granted, lengthy workouts of the Stock, Aitken & Waterman sound are always a joy to listen to, but at 11 tracks in length the sound can get rather tiresome quickly. Rob Theakston, All Music Guide" [refers to Tombstone Records label released 3/1/2005]

4 out of 5 stars Together Forever..........2006-01-14

Folks, I had totally forgotten about Mr. Rick Astley. In my surfing Amazon for Music on the Thompson Twins 12-inch Collection, they also displayed a picture of Rick Astley's 12-inch Collection. Songs like "Together Forever," "My arms Keep Missing You" and "It Would Take a Strong, Strong Man" made an impression on me in the 80's. It's a good collection of songs that I purchased for $20/US. Save your money, and get a copy! Four stars!!

5 out of 5 stars A Sample of What 24-bit Mastering is All About - Part 1.......2007-01-10

Although I have the same version of "Possession Obsession", buying this album is still worth the price. The sound quality is excellent. Even if the Hoax Remix version of "I Can't Go For That" is quite different, I'd still consider it positively as a variation. It still deserves a rating of 5. For a Hall & Oates fan like me, this album is worth collecting for. I know I should have vol. 2 of this equally excellent album.

4 out of 5 stars 4+ stars and a great addition for hard-core fans of this duo.......2004-07-29

Although this Japanese import is not cheap by any means, it's a good addition for any hard-core mid-1980s Hall & Oates fan. Since I am a HUGE Hall & Oates fan, I had to take a chance on it. There is not a dud in the 11 song collection and that is saying a lot as remix/extended mix efforts are usually a hit or miss, usually a miss. The collection opens up with extended versions of Out of Touch and Say It Isn't So, which bring the respective bass to the front of the mix and both have instrumental interludes that are very strong and not just filler. Not very different from the originals, but quite fun and serve as documents as to what 80s mixes sounded like.

My favorite remix here might be Possession Obsession as it is given new life with additional bells and whistles and a strong sax addition that makes the song even sexier than in its original form. Family Man and Private Eyes are not too different from the originals (maybe a stronger echo on the former and a voice isolation in the latter) so even though I like the songs, they lacks 12 inch treatment as per the title of the CD. Dance On Your Knees just rocks and I am so glad that they made a full song out of it as I always hated it when Out Of Touch was played without this killer intro. The remix screams 1980s but somehow sounds perfectly even today. Note that the extended Dance On Your Knees is almost entirely an instrumental, as you try and weigh out whether this purchase is for you. One on One has never sounded sexier, but the extended treatment does not help as it repeats a chorus that was perfect in shorter form.

Everything Your Heart Desires is an underrated song from the duo's 1988 Ooh Yeah. A great song is made even better by incorporating some cool echos and whistles (literally), and then permuting into a harder edge 1980s dub. Something Are Better Left Unsaid is great and digs deeper into its rock than any other song in the CD.

The gospel-infused remix of Daryl Hall's Everytime You Go Away is worth the price of admission. Daryl's voice is so crisp and alive. It's has been stripped of externals except an organ and a killer guitar accompaniment worthy of Stevie Ray Vaughn. This song is one to listen to over and over again. I Can't Go For That (No Can Do) has been given a an 1990s house treatment that does not quite do it for me as it's repetitive and strips the songs of the magic of this duo's melody.

All in all, a great addition for any hard-core fan but not essential for the casual fan. The 24-bit remastering makes it sound great. Two songs out of the set are amazing and hard-core fans will love the differences, eight others are at least almost as good as the originals, with the only let down being the HOAX remix (not making the title up) of I Can't Go For That (No Can Do). This volume easily earns 4+ stars and I am off to buy volume 2 and will tell you all about it as you guys here at Amazon really are the best. Thanks for helping me and I hope that this helps you.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! The First Volume of Hall & Oates Remixes on CD.......2003-12-20

Here are the tracks, the music speaks for itself.

"Out of Touch" (Extended)

"Say It Isn't So" (Extended)

"Family Man" (UK Extended Mix)

"Private Eyes" (UK Mix)

"Dance On Your Knees" (Extended Remix)

"One On One" (Extended Club Mix)

"Everything Your Heart Desires" (54th Street Remix - also available with other versions on a CD single).

"Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" (A genuine new mix here. The original vinyl 12" single was identical to the album).

"Every Time You Go Away" (Remix)

"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" (Hoax Remix)

The only disappointment here is the Hoax Remix of "I Can't Go For That" (The original extended mix is on "12-Inch Collection Volume II" which I also recommend).

The sound is superb with 24-bit remastering.

4 out of 5 stars Charlie Shine.......2003-09-12

Excellent compilation. However, where is the Extended Remix of 'Method of Modern of Love' by Arthur Baker and 'Adult Education' by John 'Jellybean' Benitez ?. Unfortunately, both are missing on this album...but definitely a great album. BMG please don't do it again.

5 out of 5 stars More Like "Fantastic" 12" Collection".......2003-06-13

After a year of waiting, the "12" Collection" is finally available. I must say it was worth the wait as all the songs were 24-bit remastered. Now I don't know a lot about the 24-bit process but my ears tell me it's a huge improvement over 'normal' compact discs. I directly compared some songs by playing the same song from another disc simultaneously on another player and there is a lot more detail and prescence on this disc.

I was skeptical about "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid" because when the vinyl 12" single of this "New Mix" came out in 1985, it turned out to be identical to the LP version. Here, there is (only) a slight difference in Daryl Hall's vocals in the first minute of the song.

All the remixes are very well done except for the Hoax Mix of "I Can't Go For That" which I would gladly trade for the "Don't Change" remix, or "I Don't Wanna Lose You" or....

Make sure you play "Dance on Your Knees" backwards to hear Daryl singing "Swept Away" (use a DVD player).

The next logical step would be a COMPLETE collection of Hall & Oates' remixes (not to mention videos, but that's another story).

5 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT PIECE FOR RICK FANATICS+a great listen to boot!!!.......2005-04-24

All I say is FINALLY that this is out, but the price is a tad high...yet, this is an important piece to every SERIOUS Rick fan...due to the price, casual fans stay away.

This is important, as it has EVERY 80's era 12" vinyl single version, and B-sides from these 12"'s on CD for the first time, all in one place. Also, it does 1 better than that 2003/2004 RCA/BMG Heritage Rick compilation with the 3 rarities ("Celebrate Youth" 12", "Souls" (Live) and "The Language Of Love"): all 3 are included here, along with 9 more tracks!!

Now, there's nothing here from "Working Class Dog", or SDAA, or his 70s work. None of these songs were top 10 hits. It seems that RCA only released 12"'s for 5 singles in the 80s: "Human Touch" (1983, a #18 pop hit), "Bop Till You Drop" (1984, a #20 pop hit), "Celebrate Youth" (1985, a #26 pop hit), "State Of The Heart" (1985, a #22 pop hit), and "Rock Of Life" (1988, a #22 pop hit), as these were the hits with more of a dance beat than usual, and RCA probably thought, HEY, why not try and break Rick into the clubs?? I'm not sure how much of these tactics worked, BUT these 12" singles became somewhat collectible among Rick fans and those of the cool, extended 12" singles of 80s new wave acts like New Order, Bronski Beat, Erasure and Depeche Mode. What I recalled was how well these versions worked, arrangement-wise, and how cool they sound now, with all these new new wave bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Killers being in vogue these days.

Soooo, this Japanese import compilation is important and valuable because it puts these increasingly rare 12" versions and their B-sides on CD for the first time, rescuing them in fact, and all in one place for safe keeping. What's also great are the 2 B-sides: "The Language Of Love" (one of Rick's best-ever songs, surprised it's so obscure), and a killer live version of "Souls", one of my fave Rick tunes and a #23 pop hit from 1983.

As this collection is only 12 cuts, it proves that the amount of material ACTUALLY released on 12" vinyl was very limited, but it's great that it fits all on 1 hour-long CD. Also, the fact that it has the B-side instrumental version of "Human Touch", I can now both marvel at the powerpop/dance music hybrid arrangement of the song, how well-crafted it is, and how well it works as an instrumental, but maybe I can figure it out and learn it, and/or do my OWN vocal performance of it, karaoke style!!

        Rick's the best!!

5 out of 5 stars A Sample of What 24-bit Mastering is All About - Part 2.......2007-01-10

This volume is as equally excellent as the first. The thing that initially puzzled me are the two versions of the "Jingle Bell Rock." But I'm optimistic that I could have both versions in one album, so what more could I ask for? So far, I have vols. 1 & 2 but I'm still eager to see if there will be more volumes to come. I'm so happy about these albums.

4 out of 5 stars always dug there Mixes.......2004-11-22

this is a cool collection of Hall&Oats Material being re-mixed. "Your Imagination" was always my jam as is the Re-Mix for " i Can't go for that(no can do" I dig the mixes as they add another light to already tight Jams. Hall&Oats were tight back in the day.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS ALBUM.......2004-01-01

If you are in your mid 30's like me or a little older and you are a Hall & Oates fan you most likely have all of their 33 1/3 long play extended versions of their big hit songs of the 80's. Of course a few years later, CD singles became popular and we all wish some of our long play records would be available on CD. Well today is your lucky day because here they are (along with volume one).
Whether you are a long time H/O fan or a new fan you will love this album that includes a very rare and rarely heard extended version of MANEATER. to be honest, I have heard the original version of this song so many times over the years that I was kind of sick of it, but hearing this new version of the song is like hearing and appreciating MANEATER all over again.

There is also a new and never released before dance version of KISS ON MY LIST !!!

My favorite though is the BEN LIEBRAND REMIX version of I CANT GO FOR THAT which could be re released today and shoot up the dance charts. The original extended version of I CANT GO FOR THAT is also included in this collection.

Hopefully there will be a volume 3 but in the meantime buy volumes 1 & 2

5 out of 5 stars More Hall & Oates Remixes Debut on CD.......2003-12-20

In Volume II of the "12-Inch Collection", we're treated to the following:

        "Maneater", a new extended version.
"I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" (1981 extended mix)
"Kiss On My List" (A previously unreleased mix)
        "Adult Education" (7-minute France remix)
"Your Imagination" The 1982 remix finally on CD.
"Method of Modern Love" (Extended mix)
"Out of Touch" (The dub version here.... don't ask me why)
        "Missed Opportunity" (Unlimited Mix)
"Downtown Life (Downtown Remix) (I like the Radio Version better)
"I Can't Go For That" (The UK mix by Ben Liebrand from 1990)
        "Jingle Bell Rock" (From Daryl)
        "Jingle Bell Rock" (From John)

These songs are all 24-bit remastered and the sound is perfect. The only criticism I can think of is that they leave the drum sound out at the end of "Jingle Bell Rock" and I think it's unnessecary to have the dub version of "Out of Touch" here (The vocal extended mix is on "12-Inch Collection" (Vol. I - but it doesn't say "Volume I" in the title). I think the next volume should have the remixes of "Don't Change", "I Don't Wanna Lose
You", "Talking All Night" (All versions) and some of Daryl's solo remixes from "Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine".

Make sure you pick up volume one also.

5 out of 5 stars Two Japanese collections have almost all of RCA 12" singles.......2003-12-11

The two Japanese Hall & Oates CD's "12 Inch Collection" & "12 Inch Collection Vol.2" get nearly all of the duo's original RCA U.S.A. & UK 12" singles onto CD.Having these recordings on CD has been a long-standing wish for many of the duo's fans. The only RCA 12" tracks not included are "Method of Modern Love(dub)","Say It Isn't So(Dub)" & the extended & dub versions of "Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid".The sound quality on these two collections is outstanding.A few of the duo's later Arista 12" tracks are also included. These vintage RCA & Arista extended & dub versions were created the old style way:by extending the duo's original vocal & instrumental performances.Vol.1 has 1 newly created mix & Vol.2 has several. These extended versions were created by using contemporary digital sampling techniques, and generally use only the vocals from the original Hall & Oates recordings.Fan opinion will be divided about these mixes.Middle-aged original fans won't like them. However,in general, these collections succeed in what they set out to do.Too bad that RCA/BMG couldn't have released them in the U.S.A.,and spared us the expense of buying Japanese imports.

        4 out of 5 stars Samantha Fox.........2006-01-14

Samantha Fox was one of those artists that I had forgotten about from the 80's. I bought this 12-inch collection to refamiliarize myself with her. This is a good collection of her songs - as they are mixes we are treated to extended run times. I paid $20/US for my copy.

Just to let you know, I also bought the 12-inch Collection of Rick Astley and the Thompson Twins (Hold Me Now - 9:45 long - Hooray!!) at the same time!! I paid $60/US for the three CD's, and consider it money well spent (for once) and have not regretted it! Save your cash and get your copies!! Four stars!!

        5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2005-10-11

This is a nice collection of the 80ies Samantha.
Sadly some maxi versions are not released on cd till today.
Touch me (extended version-not the blue mix)
I'm all you need (extended). This was a chance to include this mixes. But...nevertheless its a must have for any Foxy Fan.
The cover is not that good. The lovely Ms Fox is hardly recognised in this picture. Surely there are nicer photos of her.

5 out of 5 stars Finally on CD.......2005-08-09

Samantha Fox was one of the best pop singer of the 80's along with of course Madonna, Kim Wilde, Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Sandra, Belinda Carlisle... the list is huge. Anyway, this CD is packed with original extended of her best hits. In addition, this CD is worth buying just for "Touch Me [Blue Mix]" which is by far better than the original version and was never released on CD before! If you're 80's fan, buy it now even if it's a bit expensive. Check out Thompson Twins, Rick Springfield and Rick Astley in the same series all in digital remaster for higher sound quality. Note that "Hold Me Now" on Thompson Twins is the original 9 minutes 45 seconds that was never released in full on CD...

5 out of 5 stars Hold me now..........2006-01-14

There were these songs that I always liked in the 80's. It wasn't until Christmas 2005 that I found out that the songs (In the Name of Love, Doctor! Doctor! Lies) were performed by the Thompson Twins. So, I bought one of their "Greatest Hits" collections and re-discovered them, for myself.

Now, the reason for my purchase of the 12-inch Collection. Normally, I try my best to avoid buying an album for "one song." However, I've always longed for an extended version of "Hold Me Now." Clocking in at 9:45, the song, in my opinion, is pure gold! So, do I regret spending $20/US for this disc? In a word, NO! Save up some cash, and purchase this collection! You will NOT BE SORRY!! Five stars!

        5 out of 5 stars two corrections.......2005-03-15

I wanted to make two corrections to eLeMeNOhPeaQ's extensive and extremely helpful review.

Track 7 IS the original UK Extended Version of "Lay Your Hands On Me," however it is missing 5 seconds from the very beginning (which should be a solo piano chord). The true full-length version of this remix is on the 2003 UK compilation called "The Greatest Hits."

Track 10 is NOT the UK 12" Extended Version of "Revolution." (Nor is it the UK 12" Remix verion.) In fact it IS the US Extended Remix that appeared as the b-side to the US "Nothing In Common" 12" single.

That said, this is a great collection. It contains a lot of remixes formerly unavailable on CD. Personally, I'm thankful to have the Railroad Mix of "In The Name Of Love."

        Thanks!

        5 out of 5 stars All my favourite records...okay, a few.......2005-01-27

First off, the correct title of the CD is: THOMPSON TWINS 12 inch collection. Second, this CD is part of a series for GROOVES 12 inches of the '80s that are made in Japan and released via BMG/ARISTA.

The printed tracklisting and additional notes follow...

001 In The Name Of Love (12" Version) [5:39] This is better known as the 12" DANCE EXTENSION from 1982.

002 Hold Me Now (12" Version) [9:45] This is the true 12" VERSION which made an appearance on the LONG GOODBYE CD single.

003 Doctor! Doctor!(Long Version) [7:53] This version is also known as DOCTOR! DOCTOR! 12", and appears on the second side of Extended Mixes from the INTO THE GAP cassette.

004 Lies (Bigger And Better) [6:33] This has been available on many other Twins compilations before.

005 Beach Culture (Long) [6:43] Known as LONG BEACH CULTURE, this was the second track on the second side of Extended Mixes from the QUICK STEP & SIDE KICK cassette. It's about time this was put on CD in it's Long form!

006 Nothing In Common (Club Mix) [7:40] This is the first time this CLUB MIX has seen the light of day on CD.

007 Lay Your Hands On Me (12" Version) [5:59] There are many versions of this song, this is the UK Version...untouched by Nile Rogers.

008 Take Me Up (12" Version) [8:28] YOU TAKE ME UP, actually. I am familiar with this mix, however the first 3 seconds of the song are very different than the version found on THE BEST OF THOMPSON TWINS GREATEST MIXES, known as the HIGH PLAINS MIXER. The first three beats of the bass drum go down in pitch with each beat, as if someone touched the turntable while playing the record.

009 We Are Detective (Long Version) [5:44] This is the MORE CLUES mix from the 12" vinyl single and on the current U.S. Remaster [2004] of QS&SK.

010 Revolution (Extended) [6:26] This is the EXTENDED REMIX from the 12" vinyl single of NOTHING IN COMMON, not the extended mix from the 12" vinyl single of Revolution.

011 In The Name Of Love '88 (Railroad Mix) [6:44] The only other showing on CD for this mix was found on the CD single of the '88 mixes.

Overall, I think the song and remix selection is good. However, I would have included NO TALKIN' instead of the version of Lies on this disc; and since We Are Detective (More Clues) is currently on disc, I would have opted for LUCKY DAY (SPACE MIX).

The artwork leaves you desiring more. There are no pictures of Tom, Alannah or Joe other than the small pic on the OBI Strip. There are liner notes and lyrics printed in Japanese, and lame translated lyrics in English. What did they do?...listen to each song and write down what they thought the lyrics sounded like to them? This is a frequent problem with Japanese Imports.

I still rate this CD as 5 Stars, since I can't get enough of Twins songs that appear on CD for the first time. I will hope for a follow-up...maybe with these 11 tracks: LOVE LIES FIERCE, NO TALKIN', FROZEN IN TIME, YOU TAKE ME UP-MACHINES TAKE ME OVER-DOWN TOOLS (full mix), PANIC STATION, FUNERAL DANCE, COMPASS POINTS, SISTER OF MERCY (EXTENDED VERSION), DON'T MESS WITH DOCTOR DREAM (SMACKATTACK!), DESERT DANCERS and OUT OF THE GAP (Medley); all from the BMG/ARISTA era.
