With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

Best on the Planet!.......2006-03-24
These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.
Stilted.......2005-12-15
I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.
Walking the trail.......2005-08-07
I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!
Superb concert.......2005-08-02
I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.
Too Studied.......2005-06-22
Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.
The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)
Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

This sequel to Emile's first recording of romantic melodies, My Foolish Heart, continues the tradition of nostalgic listening pleasure. These tender melodies create a dreamy vision of love lost and found, woven by Emile's magical and sensitive talent.

This cd close to being great, very very close.......2002-11-01
First I would like to say that I have owned this cd for several years now. When I first bought it I played it a few times and decided that this cd was not for me. I put it in my non-play pile of cds and it has sit there ever since, until yesterday, when I decided to give it another chance. To my surprise I liked this cd on this go round. I think that possibly my music taste has grown over the years.
Now I would like to talk about this artist, Emile. He seems to be a very gifted interpetator of music. He plays in a very interesting style. His music is very easy to follow and his communication skills are very grand. He seems to hold the listners interest with each performance.
The repertoire offered here is just splendid. He choose all my favortie songs to perform. He basically did a good job with these songs.
The only thing that keep me from rating this cd a five star rating was the beginnings and endings of each songs. You see, Emile started each song with an imrpovision and ended each song with an improvision. This to me distracted from the song being performed. I am lucky to own the software for sound production and I was able to edit these beginnings and endings to clean up the songs.
I would like to recommend this cd.
Romantic Memories.......2000-03-05
Those of us who remember Eddie Duchin's piano techniques and the the crooners of our youth, cannot help but love this CD. I have played it for guests three times in the two weeks I have had it and they all want to order a copy. I am just ordering it again as a gift. Pandolfi plays beautifully and the songs chosen are some of the lovliest popular love songs written. It makes perfect dinner music for the senior crowd.
Simply soothing........1999-11-10
I was shopping in an antique store when I heard this music playing. I immediately thougth "I am going to buy this CD if I see it." I aparoached the store keeper to advise me on the album title andthe artist's name. The lady handed the disc to me and told me that " This is new by Emile Pandolfi" I bought it immediately and thought "Why have I not heard of this artist earlier?' Now this pianist is one of my favorite,

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23
Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Customer Reviews:
Intimate and tuneful.......2005-01-14
I'm an admirer of Previn as both classical and jazz musician, and in both categories he excels. This album has the same intimate, highly musical quality that you'll find in Keith Jarrett's The Melody at Night with You. What I appreciate about both is the fact that the pianist's invention always serves the music; it's never obtrusively artful or showy. Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get Jarrett's disc to go along with this.
Underrated Previn.......2002-01-14
Andre Previn has always been an underrated jazz pianist. Because of his astonishing variety of successes as a classical conductor, pianist and composer; a film composer; a songwriter; and a performer of romantic cocktail music, he has been eyed suspiciously by the jazz community. In fact, his Tatum-like virtuosity, and his wildly unique and often playfully humorous piano style has made him one of the most interesting, innovative, and entertaining jazz pianists around. His many trio albums on Contemporary Records in the '50s (with Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne) still hold up as some of the best of their kind. But like Rodney Dangerfield, he never gets any respect. Thus, even his most kind critics are likely to throw darts at "Ballads" as too sweet and not swinging. Nonsense! It's not Monk, but it is nevertheless a beautiful set and a loving tribute to some of the greatest songwriters in Tin Pan Alley. Previn squeezes out every harmonic nuance of each song, yet he sounds like he's playing off the cuff in his living room late at night just to amuse himself. Previn may not swing like Teddy Wilson or Oscar Peterson on this offering, but I can't imagine any serious listener being left unmoved by his version of Burton Lane's "How Are Things In Glocca Morra?" It's simply gorgeous. Previn's amazing talents and his proficiency in many musical styles all come together in this unjustly overlooked CD. Give it a chance!
What happened?.......2001-10-03
THe magic is gone. After reading the liner notes, I learned that someone at the studio asked Previn to make an album of just ballads. BIG MISTAKE. I think he was not in the mood.

Avoid this at all costs.......2004-11-10
Excruciating. Ray Brown is one of my all-time heroes but even he can't redeem this appalling travesty. Kiri Te Kanawa should be prevented from ever attempting this repertiore again by any means necessary.
If you want a good example of how great jazz with a singer can be, buy "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" or Charlie Haden "The Art of Song" instead.
"A lesson in laid back CLASS".......2004-10-14
Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!
Kiri does it again!.......2004-04-26
Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

This ain't your parents' world music........2001-08-13
GHOST is Japan's greatest psych-prog-noise-whatever band of commune dwelling hippies (I have heard rumors that there is some sort of GHOST house in Tokyo). The lyrics tend to the worst kind of Donovan-esque hippie dippy mystical drivel (all delivered in English with what seems to be a less than proficient knowledge of the English language - "spirit and spiral took a time trip eternally into the sun" - huh?) but since to my ears the vocals are mostly incomprehensible I don't hold it against them since singer Masaki Batoh has a pretty voice and English isn't his first language. I remember hearing a lot about GHOST before I actually heard them. They had a lot of hype around them before DRAG CITY started releasing their albums I think it was five or six years ago and I was into all things Japanese (yes, it involved a certain Japanese girl I was seeing at the time but let's not get into the sordid details) and listening to lots of that crazy Japanese music (HIGH RISE, GUITAR WOLF, BOREDOMS, HAINO etc). I remember being slightly disappointed when I first actually heard GHOST but they definitely grow on you. Of all of the Japanese noise bands I used to like, GHOST remains my favorite, if only because in the intervening years my tolerance for FEEDBACK/NOISE/SCREAMING has gone down in my old age (take my MERZBOW CDs please) and SECOND TIME AROUND remains my favorite GHOST CD. (note: unlike most amazon reviewers, I give five stars sparingly)

Etta James was just 22 when she made the recordings for this album in 1960 and '61, but she had already established herself as a youthful belter of spirited R&B numbers. Like Aretha Franklin in the same period, James felt pressure from recording executives to go in different directions. Chess was unsure whether to market her as an R&B singer or to press her toward mainstream adult pop and jazz. This CD presents both sides of the coin, with James doing rousing R&B numbers such as "Seven Day Fool" and the protosoul of "Don't Cry Baby," lounge tunes like "One for My Baby," the jazz-flavored ballad "Fool That I Am," and Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." It hardly matters, though, for James's emotional immediacy and potent delivery make all the material her own. --Stuart Broomer

Find this Classic Etta CD--It explodes with "Oh, Yeeeah!".......2004-04-15
It has track to track excellence! From Plum Nuts to (I'll Be Your) Seven Day Fool to two of my very favorites. Her rendition of One for My Baby (One More for the Road) and the superb, smoky, sultry Fool That I Am. That tune--Fool That I Am--is perfection! Trust me.
Etta At Her Early Best.......1999-04-25
Her "At Last" CD is REALLY GREAT but this disc is even BETTER. Better variety of songs and more complex arrangemewents with less clutter to them. For example, both albums have a pseudo jazz/r&b novelty cut on them but "Plum Nuts" doesn't have the hokey backup vocals that ruined "Tough Mary" on the "At Last" LP. In Fact, Riley Hampton's arrangements have the class of Nelson Riddle's work for Sinatra and the earthiness of Belford Hendricks' arrangements for Dinah Washington. Etta has made more famous recordings but "The Second Time Around" will always be one of her landmark achievements.
