I enjoy the Swingle Singers very much but sadly, in this album they are flat on about half of the tracks. When they are on key, they are very, very good. When they are flat they are awful. Recommendation: buy a different Swingle Singers CD.

A Swingle Singers Half Treasure -.......2007-03-10

If you love Bach and are a fan of the Swingle Singers, buy this CD. Fans of the Swingle Singers enjoy them for what they do to music - release it with air and bounce - and their style is perfectly suited for Bach. I couldn't enjoy it more. But the second Cd in this set is their treatment of Mozart, and, for me, it's inconsistent. This is due to the different styles of the two composers and I just think they match up better with Bach. But at this price, I shouldn't be complaining. The first CD alone is worth twice as much. Snatch it up!

Best Swingles Ever.......2006-02-16

If you know the Swingle Singers, you may expect jazzed-up Bach with a rhythm section. Now, don't get me wrong, i like that stuff, too, but that is just clean fun, while this is just Bach. No percussion, no jazzy rythym, just straight unaccompanied Bach. AND IT IS WONDERFUL.
Precise rhythm, clear vocal lines, everything you expect from the Swingles without the jazz. This is a really great album that should be bought by all Swingle lovers and all Bach lovers.
P.S. i bought this cd when it first came out,so I have never even heard the Mozart. With all due deference to fans of the worthy Wolfgang, i have always found the artful Amadeus rather a bore, so I will remain silent about that part of the album. No matter. The Bach alone is worth twice the price, so enjoy. And, hey, the Mozart is a nice bonus.

Teeming with classics.......2007-03-01

I purchased this for track #10, which I'd happened to hear on the radio...it stayed in my head until I tracked down the CD. I have a relatively basic working knowledge of classical music, so this long playing collection was an excellent and surprising introduction to several of Bach's diverse works...both well known and more obscure. Certainly a worthwhile addition to your classical collection.

Excellent Introductory CD!.......2006-06-29

This CD is an excellent introduction to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. It's certainly not exhaustive, but it's a start. It also includes pieces from Johann Michael Bach, as well as another composer (whose name escapes me at the moment) whose work was once mistakenly attributed to JSB. This entire series of CDs is perfect for those who wish to learn more about the Classical Masters. Start with this series, and then by all means, delve deeper into their respective repetoires. You won't be disappointed.

Good Introduction to Bach........2006-02-27

I don't want to repeat what has been said already but this is a great indroduction to Bach. The variety on this release is good, but like has been said numerous times before, the amount of variety fails to set a single mood. But with a low price and a great deal of variety this is a great CD for those who want to start getting into Bach. Recommended.

Bach For Dummies?.......2002-07-18

A smattering of short excerpts -- many not on their native instruments -- to introduce the great literature left to us by J.S. Bach. Some of the versions are truly inspired, a few are not.

If you like what you hear here, by all means seek out the full-length, original instrument versions!

A super introduction to Bach.......2002-03-04

For someone who knows little about Bach and wants to learn something, you couldn't do better than to give them this CD. Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra give their signature warm, plush sound to the work of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, making him sound very nearly like a Romantic rather than a baroque or classical composer. This is not a bad thing--some complain that Bach, with his mathematical leanings, leaves them cold. That isn't possible with the inviting material on this CD.

A Continuation of Part 1.......2006-09-02

A spectacular album it is what it says it is. It is simply a continuation of the first Styx greatest hits album. Including 2 never before heard songs.

1. A.D. 1928 (10/10) The intro to Rockin' The Paradise. Very creative the start of it sounds alot like The Best Of Times.

2. Rockin' The Paradise (10/10) A little Pop Rock for your taste. Off of Paradise Theatre a catchy tune. A nice guitar solo in it too a great song.

3. Light Up (15/10) Off the album Equinox another great song a kind of uptempo love song kind of like "Lorelei" makes sense seeing how they caome from the same album. The Keyboard work is spectacular in this song.

4. Sing For The Day (12/10) Off the album Pieces Of Eight written by Tommy Shaw to his daughter Hannah. A little upbeat song. Great keyboard work by DeYoung.

5. First Time (28/10) Off the album Cornerstone. In my opinion Styx's second best ballad. A beautiful love scene is painted by DeYoung. A great guitar solo in the middle the vocals by Dennis are just superb.

6. Mademoiselle (18/10) A great song off the album Crystal Ball a lot of high pitched singing kinda catchy. But another good upbeat love song.

7. Snowblind (32/10) A Styx classic. Off the album Paradise Theatre. Starts out with JY's low-pitch raspy voice then Tommy takes over with some high pitched hard rock. A sweet guitar solo and then they repeat the process to finish it off.

8. Boat On The River (16/10) Off the album Cornerstone. A very different kind of sound. Features DeYoung on Accordian and Shaw on Mandolin. Kind of almost Polka sounding.

9. Borrowed Time (19/10) Off the album Cornerstone. A lot of high pitched singing. Keyboard work is great. Really Pumps you up.

10. Lights (22/10) Off the album Cornerstone. DeYoung's vocals are great. John's drums are spectacular especially in the beginning. A great song with a message kinda reminiscent of Pieces Of Eight.

11. Queen Of Spades (25/10) Off the album Pieces Of Eight. A great song some great guitar work. If your best friend is thinking about going out with one of your ex-girlfriends and you know that it is a bad idea play this song for him.

12. Love At First Sight (10/10) Off the album Edge Of The Century. A very nice somber love song.

13. Haven't We Been Here Before (33/10) Off the album Kilroy Was Here. Tommy Shaw has never been famous for love ballads but he struck gold on this one if you are ever in a situation were you can't be with the one you love this is the song for you.

14. Superstars (14/10) Off the album The Grand Illusion. This was one of their 6 hits off of it and is definetly the weakest but it is still a great song. It was definetly meant to be played live.

15. Little Suzie (15/10) The first song with new drummer Todd Sucherman written by Tommy Shaw. A great song overall and very well done but John is truly missed and you can tell.

16. It Takes Love (30/10) This was the last original song recorded by Styx with John Panozzo before the Lady 95 version. It was recorded in 1992 with DeYoung and John's parts the others were added later. This song is very heartwrenching for any die-hard Styx fan it makes you kind of tear up beacause you know how much this song means to them.

Well there you have it my review. I think that this is a great Styx album after you get greatest hits 1. You should also add The Best Of Styx. You know their first greatest hits basically their best of wooden nickel. After you complete your findings of their hit I suggest you move to the individual albums.

Picks up where Styx's Greatest Hits Part 1 left off.......2006-01-07

Styx's second Greatest Hits album Greatest Hits Part 2 was released in June of 1996.
This compiation has the tracks left off of the first greatest hits.
The rest of the band's charting hits are included here such as the Top 40 hit Mademoiselle from 1976, the Top 100 charting Borrowed Time from 1979/80 and the Top 30 hit Love at First Sight from 1991. Plus the monster European hit Boat on the River which wasn't relesed as a single.
Plus, you also get more great album tracks like Light Up from Equinox, Superstars from The Grand Illusion, Sing for the Day and Queen of Spades from Pieces of Eight, Lights and First Time(the song which Tommy Shaw complained about quitting the band if A&M released it as a single) from Cornerstone, AD 1928/Rockin' the Paradise(a rock radio staple) and Snowblind(which was a hit on Album Rock radio in 1981) from Paradise Theater and Haven't We Been Here Before(a single which flopped) from Kilroy Was Here.
Also, there are two new songs. Tommy Shaw's rocker Little Suzie which was co-written with Dennis DeYoung and featured Todd Sucherman on drums. There's also the ballad It Takes Love which was the last song John Panozzo recorded back in 1992 with Dennis, Tommy and JY adding vocals and guitar solos in 1996.
The songs on here sound better than the original CDs and when will A&M remaster their albums.
Highly recommended!

Making Up.......2005-12-31

This does kind of make up for where part one left off, but it's not perfect. If I were you, I'd get COme Sail Away instead of the two Greatest Hits', unless you get a bundle that's even cheaper, but this is still a less than perfect first inpression for Styx.

Not necessary and the title is misleading!!!.......2004-09-27

This "greatest hits" compilation would have been better if it had been released as the second CD of the first Greatest Hits collection. Why bother to put it out as a separate album, since the songs on this album are clearly inferior to the ones on the first compiliation that was released only a year before? Answer: to make more profits for A&M records, since a 2 CD set would cost about $20 or less, while two separate CDs would cost a total of at least $30! WHAT A RIP OFF!!!!

Awesome CD!.......2006-03-04

It's not too often that a Live CD captures the energy of a band, but then again, not too many bands have the kind of energy the Randy Rogers Band has. This is no studio CD. This is live. I've seen these guys live many times (unfortunately I did miss this recording), and this CD captures their energy. The music is something that's hard to describe. You just have to listen to it. Randy's voice is just amazing. Brady's fiddle playing is unbelievable. This is just one of those "must have" cds.

Most of songs were very goood.......2006-03-22

I really like Baroque Music, especially piano. Most of the songs were good recordings. One song of special note: Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring was a very poor recording on this CD. This CD was purchased just for this one song. I was a little disappointed, but the rest of the songs turned out great. All in all, still a worthwhile CD.

Wonderful collection of Baroque music.......2006-02-27

Know who the best piano player of the 17th century was? I didn't until I read the liner notes in this collection. While all the music was written for harpsichord (since the piano wasn't invented until the 18th century) this album is a very entertaining introduction to a nice collection of Baroque masterpieces. Eminently listenable album.

Lovely piano music!!!.......2005-05-17

I absolutely love this classical piano CD. It consists of various classical pieces performed solely by a piano. You have the usual--Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring and The Harmonious Blacksmith-- and numerous sonatas all mixed together. The songs are expressed so beautifully with a full range of dynamics and speeds. This is one of the VERY few cds that I like all the songs

Great Songs.......2006-11-06

I've alays dug me some Hall&Oats. the harmonys, tight Programmed Beats&there trademark riffs along with there songwriting is timeless to me. they were always soulful when they presented there songs. they are Better than that corny Neo-Soul that came from alot of Philidephia acts over the past decade. those acts need to sit down&learn about making soulful music like what Hall&Oats did. 'Sarah Smile" still hits hard. "Kiss on My List", Man Eater"(Timberland&His Beat-maker are using elements of Hall&oats on production for both Nelly Fuertido&Justin Timberlake) One on One,Wait for Me,Rich Girl,I can't go for that(No Can do) are all Jams. Darryl Hall Can Sing/SANG. Darryl Hall always gets a Honorary Pass. John Oats got skills as well.

Experience pleasant and enjoyable a capella realizations of Bach preludes, fugues, chorale and instrumental numbers. The Swingle Singers render some as vocal transcriptions of Bach's original, instrumental music, and others as jazz arrangements. Their hymn-like rendition of Ein Feiste Burg (A Mighty Fortress) bounces into a light and jazzy scatting of "Organ Fugue from Fantasia and Fugue." They perform 21 excerpts from Bach, none of which are too obtrusive for background music, yet all are excellent enough to listen to while doing nothing but enjoying the music.

Bach was a technical genius, and the Swingle Singers have the talent and creativity to bring his music alive, translating it into new idioms successfully. Worth every chord of five stars.

Swingle again.......2001-06-03

In the late 60's the Swingle Singers used to be a new advent. An inovative exercise on J.S.Bach. Now, revisited, there's a great pleasure to rear again the famous Badinerie and many other inspiring tunes like the Air on G string and the rarelly recorded Luther "Ein Feste Burg". The singers are much "Swingle" and the late harmonies comes alive. The arrangements are quite fresh although a bit diferent on the bass. At the end we find oursefs "swinging and marking". A recording to be listened on and on.

An original and charming interpretation of Bach.......1999-07-31

The Swingle Singers have been around for a while, but I think they are just hitting their stride with this release. They do an incredible job of interpreting Bach, and not just the pieces written for voice! This is a fresh, charming and, sometimes amusing, interpretation of Bach's work. I particularly enjoyed "Air on a G string" and "Little Organ Fugue."

The Bach cd impressed me so much, I've just ordered their Mozart offering..."Acapella Amadeus."

I Like music from the 70's and early 80's and this is the most Da Bomb collection of E.L.O. that I've ever heard before although my classmates would probably disagree.

Enjoyable live tour through ELO's hits.......1999-04-02

The Electric Light Orchestra Part Two took a major step for legitimacy with this live release featuring the return of Kelly Groucutt, Mik Kaminski, and Hugh McDowell to the ELO fold, joining drummer Bev Bevan and keyboardist/vocalist Eric Troyer, as well as the soon-to-be-departed Neil Lockwood and Pete Haycock. Kelly's vocals are superb throughout, and the strings swing, thanks to Kaminski, McDowell, and the conducting/arranging of Louis Clark. The "Overture/Turn to Stone" kickoff is very effective. The performance of "Evil Woman" is marred somewhat by tinny keyboards and preening vocals by Neil Lockwood. Pete Haycock does a better job on "Showdown," though again the keyboard sound is a little thin, and the screechy guitars are a bit overdone. Groucutt and Kaminski shine on "Livin' Thing." The background vocals are somewhat weak, however. The arrangement on this particular album for "Hold On Tight" has been controversial among ELO fans...it has a real rockabilly feel here. Personally, I love it, and Kelly sounds invigorated vocally. Troyer's harmony vocals click very well on this cut. Then, Troyer takes a turn with his own "Thousand Eyes," an excellent cut on the studio album that loses none of its effectiveness live. (One major beef I have is that Troyer's superb "Honest Men" was not included in this live collection.) "Eldorado Overture/Can't Get it Out of My Head" sounds great live, as Bev Bevan intones the spoken intro with proper solemnity. Troyer does a very nice job on the lead vocal, and the orchestra sounds rich and full. "Telephone Line" is a tough song to pull off live, but Troyer and Groucutt pull it off with aplomb. The arrangement is very nice, not coming off as an exact carbon copy of the studio recording. Then, the album closes literally with a bang on the kicking version of "Roll Over Beethoven." Here, Jeff Glixman's production really shines, as none of the complex orchestral details are lost in what is a very complex mix. Lockwood's rugged vocals work on this cut, along with Troyer and Groucutt. The Bev Bevan stomp n' swing is in full force here. Instrumentally, this cut cooks. This album is another reminder of how integral Kelly Groucutt was to the original Electric Light Orchestra. Obviously, Jeff Lynne's presence is sorely missed...his genius and spark can never be doubted. But on this album, his former bandmates prove that ELO was not just a one man band. If you're not smiling and jumping just a little bit by the final cannon blast of "Beethoven," better check your pulse.

Bringing it to life.......1999-01-10

If your an E L O fan or not this live cd will make you enjoy and respect this band a whole lot more . The way they mix the classical beats with their own up beat style makes this music one of a kind ! Highly recomended.
