5 out of 5 stars Cool one.......2007-05-13

Cool cd to chill in your room, while it is ambuent sound for u to read a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent down tempo compilation.......2004-09-17

This is yet another strong and wonderful release from the Naked Music group...absolutely sexy and totally mellow. It is truly one of the best downtempo CD's I have ever heard.

Please note: this CD is actually from 1999, even though the re-release date was in 2002. And at that time, it was truly revolutionary. Even today, there is nothing quite like this particular mix.

Midnight Snack is a soulful and essential part of even a casual downtempo collection. Don't deprive yourself of this treat!

3 out of 5 stars shake out the shag pile.....again........2002-02-22

I found this album getting itself confused between whether it wanted to be a pina colada or a dry martini - My point being it starts off with a little froth and then kinda sinks into fruity Latino jazzy beats with no real substance. Out of the blue track 4 appears (make note to turn the stereo up and hit replay for this one), almost as if thrown in for good measure, this beautiful haunting piece of music is for me the best thing on 'Midnight Snack' but then again pick up any 'Chill Out' compilation in the last 6 months and you will find this on it - Yet somehow it blends with the rest of the album like a leper playing rugby. Let the conversation flow and drink up until you get to to track 9 and from then on you get a little more of the Naked Music veteran style, only slowed down and dubbed out.

CHeeeeeel is the word here and I mean that in the nicest possible sense, all in all a pleasant compilation that wears well on the stereo if you have your mates round for some apres weekend soothing - on the shag pile rug that is, Dahling.

4 out of 5 stars Tight disc...but not Naked's best.......2003-03-25

This is a quality, mid-tempo disc. Not the best for Naked's standards, but if it's on the Naked Music label, its usually good, and this is no exception. Im not quite sure what they were thinking by including Aim's "Cold Water Music", it doesn't fit the mood of the disc and isn't very good to start with. Other than that...another quality disc from the smooth producers at Naked Music.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Sampler of Soulful Downtempo Grooves........2003-03-03

"Midnight Snack" is one of the best downtempo comps I own, which is hardly surprising since it comes from the esteemed dance label Naked Music. If you just got in the house from a long day at the office or if you just returned from the club, this CD is filled with soulful cuts that offer a relaxing vibe. The grooves incorporate funk, jazz, and electronic beats perfect for after hours. Some of the tracks are instrumentals while others offer dynamic male and female vocals. I really liked the percussion-heavy "Royal Conga" by Robin Jones, the funky "Losin' You" by To-Ka Project, and Jonathan Maron's laid-back "Natural High," which features vocals that recall the suave flavor of Maxwell. What sets this apart from the rest is that it offers more grit and soul than what you'd find in other chillout albums. Naked Music clearly isn't afraid to ruffle its feathers by setting themselves apart from the other labels. This CD is a "snack" worth savoring and will be getting heavy rotation on my CD player.

4 out of 5 stars Unusually good selection of tracks, even for Naked.......2002-09-12

A great concept and execution in the dubby, downtempo realm. Naked sought to bring together the sexiest and late-nightest tracks out there into one tasty morsel of a mix, and they've done the job pretty much right-on, and with classic liner artwork to boot.

There are some truly inventive and funky tracks in this mix - and that's saying a lot, given what's being released on other labels right now - all showing solid drum programming, fat basslines, and the schooled use of multitap stereo delays. My own faves are Extended Spirit's "Propulsion," a filtery ambient instrumental with a skippy breakbeat and a touch of prog-rock synthphonics; Petalpusher's "Breakin' it Down," an epic vocal dub that moves the sould and leaves all the other versions in the dust; and Jonathan Maron's "Natural High," a silky soul number replete with wah-wah guitars, rhodes, atmospherics, fretless bass, and a Curtis Mayfield falsetto doing some serious convicing. As for the other tracks? Aim's "Cold Water Music" has me hitting the skip button sometimes, but that may be more a function of the mix than the song itself.

And that leads to my only criticism - sometimes the transitions between tracks are great, but sometimes they're not - such as their sandwiching of Robin Jones's heavyweight afro-electro monster "Royal Conga" between two incompatible tracks when a more thought-out mix would have served the track, and the whole CD, a lot better. But hey, who can complain? With such a diverse group of songs, not every mix can be perfect, and the tunes themselves are worth their weight in gold, regardless of how they're put together.

So buy the CD. Two copies. And follow the other reviewer's advice - don't loan it out to anyone. Leave it in the changer along with "Nude Dimensions Volume III" for when that special someone comes over for drinks and dessert.

4 out of 5 stars Pure, sweet, delicious ear candy for the mind........2001-07-03

Now this is great musical vibes for the soul. "Let It Go", "Breakin It Down" and "Natural High" were the only songs I've heard before picking this up. The vocals are good, production and beats are wonderful and the vibe is for any mood set. If your grooving to sounds of "Soulstice", "Mushroom Jazz Compilation" or just like dub music.......here.......take this and don't let anybody borrow it.

4 out of 5 stars Snack on this!.......2000-12-08

This is one of the best of the label's offerings, behind the legendary Nude Dimensions Vol.1 and Carte Blanche Vol.2. The best song on this by far is the Rurals' "I've Traveled the World". The cd is worth owning for that one song. All in all, a completely justifiable purchase.

5 out of 5 stars VERY FUNNY.......2001-04-17

You need to buy this album just to hear the track 'Hurricane Morris' - it's one of the funniest songs you're every likely to hear!! In fact the whole thing combines humorous lyrics with interesting jazz-rock playing, you could even put into a 'stoner rock' category, but I'd say it makes great background music - and one day you may feel inspired to carry the actions of Hurricane Morris!

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy.......2000-11-16

Though Keith Morris is only considerably known for his work in the So. Cal. punk scene with bands like Black Flag and the Cirlce Jerks, his knew group, Midget Handjob, which is backed by players from claw hammer, possum dixon, down by law, and more is quite a change. Its jazzy spoken word poetry feel is less of somthing for a punk club and more for a coffee house of a jazz bar. The energy in the music is still there, with three people doing percussion at once it would be odd for it not to be, however, there are healthy horn pieces and walking guitar lines that don't meet the aggressive sounds of power chord punk. Overall, I found the album to be excellent, though it doesn't really need Harry the Dentist, all of the other songs are pretty sweet. Their live show is also pretty cool. I saw them in a tiny bar in DC called Metro Cafe and it was hillarious. Check it out, it's definatley worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Surprise.......2000-10-20

This is not what I expected to hear from the lead singer of such seminal punk bands as Black Flag and The Circle Jerks but I suppose that's how it should be. In it's own way this record is what punk WAS all about, doing what you want and flipping the finger to any one that doesn't like it. Blues meets punk meets free jazz at it's best. Kinda like Tom Waits but not as contrived, completely original to my ears. Keith has an amazing speaking voice and his lyrics are sad, angry and life affirming all at the same time. The cd is unlike any other spoken word recording I've ever heard. Not for everybody but totally worth checking out, it seems to stay in my cd player the more I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY COOL.......2000-10-05

Midget Handjob. Aside from being probably the greatest name I've heard in a good long while, it's also got a great act to back it up. Be forewarned, however, people without a good sense of humor need not apply. The instrumentation fits Keith Morris' (ex-black flag) odd spoken word vocal stylings. If you need any kind of comparison, the nearest thing i can think of in recent times is "Nyc ghosts and flowers" off Sonic Youth's NYC GHOSTS AND FLOWERS. Best description I can give you is that this is just people having a good time and making good music. If yr. too closed- minded to accept the results.. you know where to stick it.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FEEL AND HARMONY BY THE ORIGINAL 1961 TRIO.......2004-06-02

Although only four songs on this CD, it is a pleasure to hear.
I have been a fan of this group since the early 1960's. The
voices are more mature and the arrangements more contempory, but
the soft and smooth harmony blend and strong lead vocals are
excellent. Definately worthwhile adding to my collection. For
a real eye opener, check out Ace Records compilation of their
work at Indigo Records (1960-1963). I was able to get it through
