I forgot one entry in the list of Izora & Martha's recorded works:

1991- Luther Vandross puts out an album called - "POWER OF LOVE".
It featured a duet with Martha Wash, the old classic song
"I (Who Have Nothing)". I believe Tom Jones was the original singer of this song. Sylvester put out a disco version of it on his 1979 album
called- "STARS".

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Compilation.......2007-01-13

This is what I would call a "sampler"; just a taste of what Izora Armstead and Martha Wash had to offer as the wonderful Two Tons O' Fun. They put out 2 LP's- the first one in early 1980, called "TWO TONS O' FUN" and it went thru the roof. Thank god the people at Fantasy records paid attention to the fans reaction to the duo at Sylvester's concerts and gave them a chance to shine as a duo on vinyl. Their second LP, released in late 1980, came with a name change of The Two Tons, and this second Lp was called "BACKATCHA". However, technically their first song as a duo was on Sylvester's third LP titled "SYLVESTER" in 1977- they sang "I BEEN DOWN". They would go on to re-record this song as a trio by adding Jeanie Tracy and it appeared on the "BACKATCHA" LP. For those interested, Ace Records/Southbound record label put out a cd with both full length albums on it and it is called: "THE TWO TONS: TWO TONS O'FUN / BACKATCHA" in 1993. Ace/Southbound record label also put out 2-0n-1 Sylvester LP's
onto cd's.

Here is a list of the complete recorded works and rememberances
of these 2 women:

1. 1980- Two Tons O' Fun LP.
2. 1980- Backatcha LP.
3. 1982- The single "It's Raining Men"
Along with a new name change by Izora- The Weather Girls.
4. 1983- The PAUL JABARA & FRIENDS album featured 2 songs by the
new duo. "It's Raining Men" & "Hope". This version of "Hope"
is the original version.
5. 1983- The Weather Girls put out their third album called "SUCCESS".
The version of "HOPE" on this LP is missing the intro from
the previous version.
6. 1985- They release their fourth album called- "Big Girls Don't Cry".
7. 1988- They release their fifth album called- "The Weather Girls"
With 3 songs written by Full Force.
8. 1988- Sylvester James passes away Dec. 16th, 1988 in San Francisco.
9. 1989- Martha Wash sings lead on the song "(You're My One And Only)
True Love"- put out by the girl group SEDUCTION, and written
by Clivilles & Cole (C&C Music Factory).
10. 1990- C&C Music Factory put out an album called "GONNA MAKE YOU SWEAT"
and uses Martha's vocals. She is denied credit and the rest
is herstory.
11. 1990- Black Box puts out an album called "DREAMLAND" and Martha
sings lead on almost all the songs. Again she is denied credit
and the rest is herstory.
12. 1991- With The Weather Girls now officially over, Izora Armstead
releases her only (12") single, called- "Don't Let Love Slip
Away".
13. 1992- Martha releases her debut album called "MARTHA WASH".
14. 1993- Izora teams up with her only daughter Dynelle, moves to Germany,
and with the rights to The Weather Girls name, the two
women record their new album called - "Double Tons O' Fun".
They record their own version of "It's Raining Men".
15. 1993- The group CHOCOLATE releases their version of
"It's Raining Men" featuring the new Weather Girls.
16. 1994- C&C Music Factory releases their second album called-
"ANYTHING GOES" and uses Martha on a couple songs.
This time around she is credited.
17. 1995- The Weather Girls release their second album called-
"THINK BIG".
18. 1997- Todd Terry releases his album called- "TODD TERRY PRESENTS
READY FOR A NEW DAY". Martha sings on a few songs.
19. 1997- Lambda releases their 12" single- "HOLD ON TIGHT" which
features Martha's vocals. This is the third time she is
denied credit for her work.
20. 1998- Martha releases her greatest hits collection called-
"THE COLLECTION". It features yet another version of
"It's Raining Men"- this time it's Martha and RuPaul.
21. 1998- The Weather Girls release their third album called-
"PUTTIN' ON THE HITS". They release an oldskool song called
"Don't Look Any Further" and it features the original singer,
ex-lead of the Temptations, Dennis Edwards.
22. 1999- The Weather Girls release a single called- "BIG BROWN GIRL".
23. 2000- Small Voices Calling release a single featuring Martha,
called- "LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE".
24. 2002- The Disco Brothers release a single featuring The Weather
Girls called- "GET UP".
25. 2002- The Weather Girls release a 12" single called- "YOUR LOVE".
It is a song from their fourthcoming album.
26. 2004- Izora Armstead passes away Sept. 16th, 2004 in a California
hospital.
27. 2004- Izora's step-daughter Ingrid joins Dynelle to form what is now
the 3rd incarnation of The Weather Girls. They finish work on
an album that Izora was working on with Dynelle; it is called
"TOTALLY WILD". The second single released from this album is
called- "WILD THANG". ("YOUR LOVE" was the first single).
28. 2005- Martha Wash releases a cd maxi-single called "YOU LIFT ME UP".
In interviews, she mentions she has been working on getting a
long-awaited gospel album released.

As of todays date- Jan. 12th, 2007 it is still not released.

With the sad passing of Izora Armstead, this CD reminds us all what a wonderful talent she was. With the fabulous Martha Wash they sang together as backing for Sylvester and then went on to greater things as Two Tons O Fun. Eventually they became the Weather Girls and probably the best ever ladies duo in the world. Martha's high range and Izora's gritty deep voices mix and match superbly. All the songs on this CD are top class including the very famous It's Raining Men. They are all so good I can't decide my favourite track. I just wish that all their albums were available for purchase on CD. Come on Fantasy and CBS get your acts together and lets have more of the Weather Girls.

5 out of 5 stars Thank God It Is Available At Last!!.......2001-06-15

This CD is a compilation of the first two albums by Two Tons (Martha & Izora) plus the perennial favorite "It's Raining Men" when they changed their name to the Weather Girls (why?!) In any event, this project is a gem because it captures some of their best performances on record. As a matter of fact, a fitting addtion would have been their work on Sylvester's live album "Living Proof" recorded at the San Francisco Opera House. (most notbly a searing cover of the Beatles tune "Blackbyrds" and the glorious "Sharing Something Perfect".

As a duo, Martha and Izora were unparalleled and the same fervor, musicianship, and excitement they displayed on record was equally impressive in person. If you have not had a chance to hear Martha, who in my humble opinion, ranks with the absolute best of the female singers like Aretha, Chaka, and Whitney to name a few, please do not miss the opportunity should it arise. I was lucky enough to have just moved to San Francisco when they started and this album was so popular. I also had the wonderful experience of hearing these two divas in person and they left absolutely NOTHING to be desired. Unfortunately, I haven't heard much from Izora these days, but Martha has amassed a solid following and built a solid foundation as a premiere vocalist who many artists would profit from having on their projects. I am excited to say the least and can assure you that you will thoroughly enjoy this CD and come back to it time and time again.

*(11-19-2004) - Would like to take this time to comemorate the recent passing of Izora Rhodes. She will definitely be missed.

Oh my Goodness, I was down in ATL. when I heard this CD when I tell you this lady has a powerhouse voice like no other. With some of her notes she runs circles around Mariah Carey. I love this CD, if you really want to hear a real voice sing and not some of this B/S on the radio. Get this CD you will see it

5 out of 5 stars Diva Elite.......2007-01-24

Martha Wash has come a long way since 1977 when she paired up with Izora Armstead (then Rhodes), and became known as Two Tons O' Fun, singing backup for disco singer Sylvester. The duo sang their first duet called "I BEEN DOWN" on Sylvester's 1977 LP titled "SYLVESTER" (his 3rd album). They continued to record and tour with Sylvester into 1978 and appear on his 4th LP- "STEP II". They also appear on the self-titled disco album by "PARADISE EXPRESS" (Fantasy record label), with Izora belting out "REVEREND LEE" and Martha shining on "STAR IN MY LIFE". By 1979 Martha & Izora had built quite a fan base, as evident on Sylvester's 1979 album "LIVING PROOF", that the duo was offered their own recording contract. 1980 saw the release of their debut album "TWO TONS O' FUN", which sold so well they rushed out a second album and changed their name to The Two Tons, the second album was called "BACKATCHA". Both of these full length albums are on one cd, put out in 1993 by South Bound/ACE Records (out of London), and it is called: "THE TWO TONS: TWO TONS O'FUN/BACKATCHA". Also in 1993, Fantasy records released a compilation cd with selected tracks from the first two LP's, called: "TWO TONS: MARTHA WASH & IZORA ARMSTEAD - GET THE FEELING". The Fantasy version has 3 tracks that feature the full length 12" single versions of- "I GOT THE FEELING" (Patrick Cowley Megamix), "DO YOU WANNA BOOGIE, HUNH?" (Buddy Brundo remix), and "EARTH CAN BE JUST LIKE HEAVEN" (Robbie Leslie remix). In 1982 they needed a new direction. Disco was dead, although technically it was simply renamed "dance music", but with a stronger beat and a high energy feel (Hi-NRG). The two girls moved to Columbia Records in 1982 and Paul Jabara and Paul Shaffer (David Letterman Show) presented the girls with a new song called "IT'S RAINING MEN" they recorded it as a 12" single- Izora came up with a new name, The Weather Girls. The song was an instant hit. In 1983 it appeared on the Paul Jabara album called "PAUL JABARA & FRIENDS", and was immediately followed by a full-length album by the girls called "SUCCESS". 1985 saw the release of their 4th LP- "BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY" and their old label Fantasy Records cashed in on their renewed fame and released "MEGATONAGE: THE BEST OF THE TWO TONS (AKA THE WEATHER GIRLS)". It featured 7 selected tracks from their 2 LP's on Fantasy as well as an 8th song, their hit "IT'S RAINING MEN". They also sang backup vocals on Bob Seger's 1985 hit "LIKE A ROCK". 1988's "The Weather Girls" (their 6th and last album together), featured 3 songs by Full Force. After 1988, musically, the two women went their seperate ways. In 1989 Martha worked with Clivilles & Cole (C&C Music Factory) and provided lead vocal on the song "(YOU'RE MY ONE AND ONLY) TRUE LOVE" for the girl group Seduction- for which she is not credited. Martha would go on to do more vocal work, again uncredited, with C&C Music Factory, for their 1990 debut album "GONNA MAKE YOU SWEAT", and uncredited work for the group Blackbox on their 1990 debut album "DREAMLAND". In 1991, Martha recorded a duet with Luther Vandross called "I (WHO HAVE NOTHING)" (which was an old 1970 hit for Tom Jones, as well as a 1979 disco hit for Sylvester- in which Martha sang backup on). Also in 1991, Izora Armstead released her only solo recording on a 12" called "DON'T LET LOVE SLIP AWAY" (on the In'd Label)- it has 3 tracks: Radio Edit/Club Vocal/Instrumental Version. After battling legal troubles over her uncredited work, Martha came back stronger to release her own debut album in 1992. The cd included 2 solo versions of The Two Tons song "JUST US"- an obvious nod to her legion of fans. In 1994 Martha contributed a remake song "MR. BIG STUFF" to the "D2:THE MIGHTY DUCKS" Soundtrack, and Martha worked with C&C Music Factory again and was credited for her work this time on their album "ANYTHING GOES!". In 1996 Martha contributed an Elton John remake song "I'M STILL STANDING" to the "FIRST WIVES CLUB" Soundtrack. In 1997, Martha contributed a song called "MAGIC CHARMS" to the "KISS ME GUIDO" Soundtrack, as well as recording vocals for the song "HOLD ON TIGHT" by the group Lambda, but was denied credit by Lambda. (The following year, in 1998, Jason Nivens re-released this song as a cd single with remixes, and this time Martha was credited). Also in 1997, Todd Terry released his debut album "TODD TERRY PRESENTS READY FOR A NEW DAY", and Martha provided lead vocals on a few songs. 1998 saw the release of her greatest hits, called "The Collection", it featured a new version of "IT'S RAINING MEN". This time it was a duet with RU Paul. In 2000 Martha provided lead vocal for the song "LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE" for the Small Voices Calling project. In 2004 Martha appeared on the television special "GET DOWN TONIGHT: THE DISCO EXPLOSION LIVE"- it was released onto dvd and cd and contains her solo version of "IT'S RAINING MEN". In 2005 Martha released a cd single called "YOU LIFT ME UP"- a dance club, gospel-flavored song. She mentioned in interviews at that time that she is trying to get a gospel album recorded/released (but as of today's date- 7/29/07, it has not been released). In 2006 Martha appeared on Rev. Yvette Flunder's gospel cd "WE WON'T BE SILENT ANYMORE". Martha sings a solo on the song "LORD, KEEP ME DAY BY DAY". As for 2007, all I could find was a club song she sings called "KEEP YOUR BODY WORKIN'" which is on the Tony Moran 2-cd set called "THE EVENT" ("KEEP YOUR BODY WORKIN'" is a remake of the 1979 song by the disco group Kleeer).
Now, back to the review of this debut album. It covers a wide range of song styles and proves what all of her fans already know- that she is one of the best singers we have today. I personally place her right up there with Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan & Whitney Houston- as a member of the Diva Elite. So what became of Izora Armstead? Well, in 1993 she moved to Germany with her daughter Dynelle and became the new Weather Girls (Izora owned the rights to the name), and released the following cd's in Germany: 1993-"DOUBLE TONS O' FUN", 1995-"THINK BIG", and 1998-"PUTTIN' ON THE HITS". In 2002 Izora & Dynelle began work on their 4th album. They released the single "YOUR LOVE" with Wackside. Izora experienced health problems and work was not completed on their forthcoming album. Izora passed away Sept. 16th, 2004. That same year Dynelle paired up with her step-sister Ingrid and they became the latest version of the Weather Girls and finished the recordings of the album and released a cd single called "WILD THING", followed by the full length album "TOTALLY WILD!" at the end of 2004. So there you go. For those who always wanted to know and for those who may be doing research on Martha Wash, I offer this information. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Martha Wash takes center stage in an outstanding compilation.......2000-04-10

Being an avid Martha Wash fan, this compilation is a must for me. I was fortunate enough to be present at a Martha Wash appearance where she sang "Listen to the People" in public for the very first time, and I knew then that it was a smash! She is one of the very few artist I know of that sounds equally impressive and powerful in person as she does on a recording. If you love the way Ms. Wash can belt out a powerful and meaningful tune, you'll love her contribution to Sounds of a Better World. Buy it, love it, and tell all your friends about it!

5 out of 5 stars Listen To The People NAJM (No Attitude Just Music) Review.......2000-04-06

Every now and then a collaborative work of art passes in front of you to remind us that we're all in it together and when we combine our diverse talents.. great things can happen! In this case its the "Sounds of a Better World" project that is a collection of songs conceived by composer Jim Papoulis, that focuses on the dawning of a new millennium through the eyes of children.

Both the sales of the recordings and the benefit concert earlier this year at Carnegie Hall in New York, will support The Foundation For Small Voices, which plans to bring both awareness and funding to programs focusing on the importance of child development as a key to our global future. Such charities include "Side By Side", a NY based organization designed to cultivate leadership skills and foster social awareness; "Tomorrow's Children", a NJ based organization that provides programs and services to children with cancer; and "St. Christopher's, Inc." whose goals are to provide family reunification for foster children.

"Listen To The People - The Remix Collection" provides us with a huge array of talented individuals, who together push this project over the top. The first track is the "Chris Panaghi Main Klub Mix" (7:53) which is a full on house number where Martha soars above to give us a heart felt distinctive vocal performance. The second track "Chris Panaghi Dub" (6:29) is the vocal dub version of track #1. The third track "Pablo Rosa's Sound of Inspiration Vocal Dub" (7:30) brings us yet another dub track, but this one's completely different with its hard house almost techno approach. There is a syncopated piano section that just screams for strobes! Track #4 "Pablo La Rosa's Trancey Boy Dub" (6:59) is more or less a tranced up version of #3, less Martha's vocals. Track #5 "Mike Cruz's Krash Vocal Mix" (6:28) delivers us a completely different musical incarnation that starts out tribal but smoothes into a clean base for Martha's vocals to launch. Track #6 "The Cruz Mental Mix Dub" (6:32) is more or less a vocaless version of #5. Track #7 "Earl Pleasure's Main Crobar Vocal Mix" (7:26) has all the underground New York sound you'd ever want from Martha. Her vocals are a bit dryer on this mix, which has already been picked up by several NY Club DJ's. Track #8 "Earl Pleasure's Tribal Beat Down" (5:28) is slightly faster than #7 and serves as that tracks dub counterpoint. Track #9 "Kung pow Club Mix" (7:23) is it's own thing. Heavy house undertones are complimented with a slice of techno on the side, and provides an excellent vehicle for Martha to do her thing. The last track of the set is the "Haarmeyer Anthem Mix" (9:27) and is the longest of the set. Keith Haarmeyer's Anthem Mix will certainly stand the test of time with its lush production. The track is perfectly structured for slamming into your next full house.

Overall, the song is spectacular and Martha's delivery is legendary. Each remixer truly brings his own wares to the set. For all you DJ's that complain about dub tracks not fitting with their vocal tracks, you will be happy to find all of these dubs fit perfectly synced into their respective vocal tracks.

You get ten gorgeous tracks with Martha Wash's star power and vocal excellence. Combine that with the inspirational writing and production, "Listen To The People" is what hits are made of. Package all of that with the fact that several children's charities are supported through the sales of the single and album, everyone wins.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to Miss Wash.......2000-03-11

I am giving this CD five stars mainly because it is a new release from Martha Wash in a couple of years (since The Collection). I love Martha Wash, but I wish she would do a new studio album. Her last album was 1992's "Martha Wash", and at this point ANYTHING new is better than nothing. Her voice is a national treasure in my opinion. I only wished that it were recorded more often!

When it comes to the domain of disco divas, Martha Wash reigns supreme, with a phenomenal, gospel-trained voice. The Martha Wash Collection samples her career from her pre-Weather Girls period--both "Taking Away Your Space" and "It's True I Do" are credited to Two Tons of Fun--up to her work with hit-machine C&C Music Factory, though "Strike It Up" is the only Black Box-era track represented here. Wash's vocals always embody the emotion of every song she blesses with her talent, from the warmth and passion of her lower registers to the high energy of her disco-siren wails. With the range and drama of the human experience Wash is able to evoke--and invoke--with her music, it's better to drop the limiting "disco" from the "disco diva" title. Just crown her diva. Period. Purists might want to know that the version of the classic "It's Raining Men" that's included here has RuPaul standing in for Izora Armstead. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars Martha Is A Diva Due Her Title.......2007-01-14

There'll never be another Martha Wash. It's a shame that record companies don't wise up and create a bidding war for her next album. With horrible singers out there making records, you'd think record companies would step back and ask themselves... why don't we find a real singer with real chart potential? Everything Martha touches turns to gold. Many artists have benefited greatly from using her voice- Sylvester, Paradise Express, C&C Music Factory, Blackbox, Lambda, Small Voices Calling, etc. In recent interviews she has mentioned how she is struggling to get a gospel album recorded/released- even going so far as to release a single "YOU LIFT ME UP" to show that interest is strong out there for more Martha material. Until this woman is given the respect she is due, you'll have to satisfy yourself with this offering- a collection of her best material. Yes, there should be many other titles added to this collection, but I believe it was put together to show the range and ability she has to cover various styles. I hope her dream of releasing a gospel album comes true soon, because if anyone deserves to release one, it would be Martha. On my list of Divas, she is number one. Followed by Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Barbra Streisand and Maureen McGovern. Yes, Maureen McGovern- listen to her cd NAUGHTY BABY and tell me she is not a Diva. Keep working Martha, you have a huge following and we love you.

    5 out of 5 stars Great collection!.......2003-12-03

This is a great collection of Martha's many popular hits with some new songs included too. I love this album! The only songs I think should've been left out would be "Everybody Dance Now," "Come," and "It's Raining Men." I 'm really not too fond of those songs, and I usually skip them. Songs like "Leave A Light On," "I Found Love (C+C Club Mix)," "Gonna Love You Over," "So What'cha Gonna Do" and "Just Us" should have also been included in this collection, so why weren't they?? I don't understand. Nonetheless, it's still a pretty good collection. My personal favorites are "God Bless The Road (That Leads Me Home)," "Takin' Over (Feel The Groove)," "Catch The Light," and "Keep On Jumpin'." They're great songs and really show off Martha's talented singing ability. She's one hell of a singer and can definately belt it out. This is a must have for any music lover or true fan of dance music. Don't hesitate to get this great collection!

    4 out of 5 stars Huge Talent!.......2003-01-03

Ever happened you were listening to the radio and you went: "hey this voice is familiar...?" and then the dj says the name of a band that is different from the one you were thinking of?
Well, then - most probably - you were listening to a dance group featuring the lady in question.
Martha has always been high up on the wish list of lots of dance groups in need of a vocalist with experience, skills and a GREAT voice.
See: Two Tons of Fun, C&C Music Factory or Black Box...just to name a few...
This Cd by Martha is a compilation that most easily includes 20 years of dance anthems.
I like the feeling i get whenever i hear her voice.
She is so talented, it hurt so bad when she was not given the due exposure because of her looks that apparently did not fit the marketing people.
So..what do we get here? A # 1 US smash with GONNA MAKE YOU SWEAT with C&C, a couple of Top Ten hits (STRIKE IT UP with Black Box - remixed version here - and her own GIVE IT TO YOU), two great duets (KEEP ON JUMPING, sung with another dancefloor heavyweight such as Jocelyn Brown and produced by Todd Terry, and the cover of Two Tons of Fun's IT'S RAINING MEN - a gay anthem in its own right....in duet with Ru-Paul...a winner!).
And then lots of good tracks, both to be enjoyed by listening or dancing as you please..
Do yourself a favour, good music is about music..not looks only.
Martha is waiting there for you to prove me right.

4 out of 5 stars Her second album and already a greatest hits!!.......2002-04-02

I think this release was so cool and it's kinda bad that I got it too late but it was worth it. I love both mixes of "Catch The Light" I only wish I could get the cd single. Some songs I had already heard before but the new ones were a delight because you get to heard Martha belting it out in the early years. I think the remakes of "It's Raining Men" and "Strick It Up" don't even match up to the originals. RuPaul doesn't even sing but just yells around and says "I THOUGHT YOU KNEW GIRL" I mean i thought He knew he couldn't compete with the Diva of Dance. but i give him credit for trying. I also love the "God Bless The Road" song it gets me lifted everytime I hear it. I alos noticed that her new songs had a theme to them. That God is real and we should try to "COME" into the light of his love. Also try to "CATCH THE LIGHT" of his love. I thought that was pretty cool to hear her singing about the Lord in such a dancy way. Much love to this underated artist.

4 out of 5 stars Incomplete, but wonderful collection of true vocal talent.......2000-10-02

I have to agree that "The Collection" is an incomplete compilation of the works of one of the most talented vocal artists of this or any generation. Martha has the talent and range to go from soft ballad delivery to a belting club phenomenon in the blink of an eye. It's true, there are many great songs that are not represented here, but one that is, and my personal favorite is "God Bless the Road". This song will truly set you free. It lets you in easy with ballad-style vocals, and steadily increases till you find yourself engulfed in a movement worthy of any chorale concert. What's true of all songs on "The Collection" is that Martha delivers each one like nobody else would ever attempt to. Buy it, and despite it's shortcomings (which have nothing to do with her talent) you'll still love it.

Her second solo single from self-titled "Martha Wash" is fabulous!!! Gorgeous vocals over the piano driven, bass heavy House track. It rocketed straight to #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play. Highly recommended.
