4 out of 5 stars The Best of Warren's First Four Global Underground Releases.......2007-05-09

Global Underground 011: Budapest is Nick Warren's third release for the series. I am not a big fan of Warren's first four GU releases, but out of the quartet, this is definitely my favorite. Most of this has to do with track selection. Hard techno is one of my least favorite electronica genres (i.e. like all the tracks found on both discs of GU008:Brazil).

This album is definitely on the racier and harder side. No question. However, the tracks have much more depth to them than the majority of the tracks featured on the other 3 albums. More trance and progressive trance rifts help to break up the monotoney nicely.

I heavily favor Warren's later releases, but I will still listen to this one once in awhile.

Both discs get 4/5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars This came AFTER Brazil? Weird........2006-05-18

Very good trance CD. What makes it stand out is the consistency of the quality of the tracks, which is amazing. The drawback being there is no one track that stands out, but on the other hand they're all pretty good.

One thing I must say though -- Never, ever, EVER sample porn soundtracks. "I Want You" on the second disk is by FAR the worst trance track ever. EVER.

4 out of 5 stars Fast paced .. Party music?.......2004-10-11

Wow, this cd sure does have a lot of great ratings. You might go hmmm i wonder why. maybe i'll get that album. Not a bad choice because it is great, although..... this cd is very face paced, and a little repetetive. it does not go on any particular journey into deep trance, which maybe it wasn't trying to, maybe it was just trying to be fast hard beats. Now im not trying to critisize this album because it is great, but if you do buy it you may get bored because you'll want it to go deeper. You just know that Nick Warren can produce something more mind boggling than this. It's okay though. There is no cheese involved here and you may love it, but instead of buying it, if you can borrow it or download it, then you might see what it's like and not waste money if you don't like it.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Global Underground Classic.......2004-05-14

I'm not usually one to review CDs, but I felt that putting a blurb about this one would be worthwhile... As a owner of well over 200 electronic music CDs (and having heard plenty more that I feel aren't worth owning), this compilation is clearly one of the best in my collection.

I was recently doing some yearly collection cleaning, and when I popped both of these discs in, I was truly blown away. This stuff is approaching 4 years in age now, and it still absolutely slams by todays standards. Both discs just offer up great track after great track, and keep going. You will not regret getting your hands on this one...

5 out of 5 stars Nick Warren Storms The Capital of Hungary With This GU Mix.......2003-01-30

I own all the GU series releases and I've listened to all of them many times over BUT this is MAGIC from one of the GREATEST DJ's in the world. Nick Warren means business here. It is an absolute instant classic. One which never sounds out of date and one which withstands the test of time. CD1 features classics such as Mara's "The One", Timo Maas Vs Ian Wilkie's "Twin Town" which Nick has mixed brilliantly and Armin's "Virgo". CD1 builds up very fast and continues its fast pace into CD2, which in my opinion becomes even better, including LSG's "Shecan", Z2's brilliant and aweosome "I Want You", Life On Mars' "Life In Minds" and Purple Haze's "Genetic" which sets the pace of CD2.

Nick warren is going round the PLANET OF PROGRESSIVE TRANCE/HOUSE here and invites you to join the ride with him. I've taken the ride many times over and everytime I listen to this beautifully mixed compilation, I find myself with the PERFECT LANDING into the heart of Trance. Simply The Best and head and shoulders Above The Rest.

Skillfully integrating house and trance styles, this latest Global Underground set is compulsory for all who want the club in their living room. Never one to let the pace let up, British DJ Nick Warren keeps firing seamless beats in this continuous, carefree ascent to total mental freedom. Superbly captured from a night in front of 2,000 wild Hungarian clubbers, Warren seems to have drawn off Eastern Europe's continuing social turmoil to offer a set that gives total escape from life's daily conundrums: try dancing nonstop to this and wake up surrounded by nurses, but Warren offers the challenge for all those daring enough to try. Arcadium's "Fade Instinct" is pure driving at 100 mph, while deeper in, Tilt's "Whats This?" is 4 a.m. with the trancelike high peaking. Whether in Budapest or Birmingham, Warren's Global set will invigorate the soul and inspire you to perspire. --Steffan Chirazi

2 out of 5 stars Selected Well, Mixed Dismally.......2000-06-25

I eagerly awaited my shiny new double CD set in the mail; the Global Underground series had never let me down. Unfortunately, the GU series took an unfortunate turn with this release. Though some of the tracks stand out (I Want You, Flutterby, Twin Town), many repeat too much, and don't build toward anything. The CDs have no feeling of momentum, they build neither to an emotional peak, nor an energetic one.

The mixes, too, fail the series. He brings up the songs too late and too abruptly. They aren't subtle enough to suit his progressive/tech style.

Describing his style is difficult. It varies from tek-house grooves to uplifting progressive trance, to muted and subtle West-Coast trance conventions. All around, these are well selected tracks, but he places them in a seemingly arbitrary order, not paying attention to whether they mix well or if they build towards a peak.

Don't buy this CD. Rather, I recommend you take a look at Dave Seaman's CDs instead. He's made excellent releases on GU and Renaissance.

2 out of 5 stars NOT WORTH IT!.......2000-05-12

I was vey exited on gettin this CD; however i have to say i was extremely dessapointed when i got it. It is just a little bit too repetitive, especially the 1st cd which abslotely sucks. The 2nd Cd is not bad, especially songs 5-6-7, which are the only reason for what i steal listen to this cd every now and then. So just dont waist the money cause there are more than 30 cds better than this one out there

4 out of 5 stars I expected more.......2000-05-09

The second CD is very good. The first one, on the other hand, leaves a lot to be desired. Tracks 6-10 just don't seem to be melodic enough; in fact, they are really boring. In all fairness, it is possible that those tracks work very well in a club environment but at home on my discman they just sound monotonous. The rest of CD1 is fine but nothing to write home about. All in all, I find Dave Seaman's track selections to be much better; just check out Seaman's Renaissance CDs and his GU012. To sum up, this compilation is not particularly memorable but it is definitely worth having.

5 out of 5 stars The most innovative DJ in Trance.......2000-04-11

If you listen to the top trance releases of 1999/2000 (Oaky, Digweed, Sasha, Dave Ralph) these discs blur to the point they are diffucult to tell apart. This is partly from track selection (These guys are playing alot of the same tracks), and partly from a very similar style of trance. On the other hand if you play Nick Warren's 3 GU releases back-to-back it seems as if you are listening to 3 completely different DJ's with only one thing in common: that they are all trying to push the envelope of Trance and electronic music as far as they can, but in different directions. This time Nick Warren has decided to spin two full discs of RELENTLESS progressive trance. In my opinion the best Nick Warren and GU release to date. This CD can simultanousely appease trance fans hungry for an emotional/musical voyage, and house-techno fans looking for intense beats. If that is hard for you to imagine, well, you just have to hear it for yourself! Extremely good and original track selection, amazing consistency (not a sinlge lame song on both discs), and of course world class mixing, courtesy of Mr. Nick Warren.

Being such a hard-core Nick Warren fan, when i first heard this cd full of mind weaving up and downs rythmically creating trans orgasms which a raver could only dream about. I knew this cd was awesome and beyond, Warren is a true trance master with music that echoes in your head for days it's so great. If you enjoy Warren as much as I do, then I recommend this cd for you, for it tops Warren's other cd's.
