Anyone who's ever prepared a bubbly drink for a patio party while listening to Esquivel (or one of the endless series of Ultra Lounge comps from the mid-'90s) will know precisely where Tipsy's coming from. This playful modern group uses all the sonic cues of classic lounge and exotica music--popping-popcorn rhythms, string arrangements set on "tickle," tiki-surf guitars, and interjections of "Zow!" that sound as if they were sung by people in well-tailored suits. But Tipsy are keenly aware that this music's kitsch factor went out of hipster fashion about five years ago--the same time that their great debut, "Trip Tease," got lost in the ironic-lounge avalanche. So here they move beyond the (squeeze) cheese factor and craft infectiously upbeat songs that stand just fine on their own, from the sunnily propulsive "Papaya Highway" to the spy-themed "Swallowtail." And in a nod to today's electronica mayhem makers and yesterday's psychedelic popsters, they insert disorienting sound effects at every other turn. (See the blender-collaged "Hey!") Forget the retro-revival factor; Uh-Oh is a perkily distracting good time in any era. --Lisa Gidley

Cowboy Mouth is really all things to all people. Their brainy, sweaty mix of novelty songs, delicate psychedelia, glam, classic rock, and roots gets better and better over time. It's rare in a band that has had such a long run to maintain such brash energy and enthusiasm. While the New Orleans-based band hasn't settled down into a single groove or genre, the musicianship has been tightened up as the players tame some of their former manic energy into a more coherent musical statement. "Trouble" sounds like a missing Kiss track and is a damn sight more interesting than what the painted warriors are turning out lately. The muscular guitar licks, rather misogynist sentiments, chugging bass, and bombastic drumming is a throwback to the days when dinosaurs still roamed the earth, and that is a good thing. "Bad Girl" is a hoot, if only for the aside: "Who cares if Michael Stipe is straight or gay." Cowboy Mouth has finally captured the breathless fun of their incendiary live shows. --Jaan Uhelszki

2 out of 5 stars Umm...ok..........2004-12-23

OK, there are indeed a few good songs on this cd, such as "Disconnected," "So Much the Better," and the lead single and best track, "Better." However, this does not mean the rest of the album follows suit. I really do not know what they were thinking on this one. Well, I do, and you can't really fault anyone for trying something new and trying to branch out a little bit. Unfortunately, though, this is one scenario when such an attempt is not necessarily for the the better.

Some of these songs could have possibly been decent tracks, if it were not for over-production and the throwing in of unnecessary electronic equipment (hear "Tomorrow Never Knows," which I am honestly still trying to figure out). One other thing which brings this album is the lyrics in some songs. I realize that Cowboy Mouth has never taken themselves too seriously, which is one reason why they have always been such an attraction for so many people, but do we really need to be reminded of the travesty that occurred a few years ago known as the "Nookie"? I had to read the booklet before I could believe they actually used the term "nookie" in a song.

This album is by no means a total loss though. As I said at the beginning there are a few very good songs, and the experimentation does seem to pay off in a few spots, including "Trouble," "Bad Girl," and even the title track "Uh-Oh" is fairly decent. The bottom line on this one is that some people may dig the new effects and whatnot, but if you're a fan of the old, laid-back Mouth, you might want to give these songs a listen before picking this one up.

In a world of commercial sell outs, this band is different. I dare you to try to classify this. I can! REAL GOOD MUSIC. This CD is unlike anything you've ever heard...I went back and bought all their CDs after hearing this. I now look forward to seeing them live. THIS BAND KICKS BUTT!! TRY IT...YOU WON'T BE LET DOWN!

5 out of 5 stars Only thing better would be LIVE!.......2003-09-23

Cowboy Mouth is a band with extreme energy and enthusiasm. The new CD "Uh-Oh" lets a lot of that wild, take no prisoners energy through. That being said, if you are new Cowboy Mouth fan, or are just trying to find a new band to listen to, do not make up your mind about Cowboy Mouth until you have seen a live show. While their music can stand on it's own, the complete immersion of a Cowboy Mouth show is the stuff that new fans are made from. Do not miss them if they tour anywhere near you. It is an event like no other.

3 out of 5 stars A Devoted Fan of the Mouth.......2003-09-15

My friend from Louisiana got me hooked on Cowboy Mouth two or three years ago. Since then, I have compulsively bought every single CD that they have made, including all of their EPs, Fred LeBlanc's solo album, as well as Paul Sanchez's solo album. Over their year, I think their sound has changed a lot. Their newest CD, "Uh Oh", is by far their furtherest departure from their original sound, and this time, I think they might have strayed a little too far.

"Uh Oh" is certainly catchy. The songs are very hummable, and it makes great background music. But to me, this CD sounds over produced. They obviously had a lot of fun with the mixing machines, and other sound effects in the studio, which I think detracts from the truly excellent singing that this group does. I have seen them live four times, and these guys do not need sythesizing to sound good.

Also disappointing is the overwhelming number of Fred songs on this CD. It seems like there are fewer tuns fronted by the other band member on this CD, as opposed to the other CDs. I was especially surprised the Fred was the one fronting the song "Invincible", as that is one of Paul Sanchez's songs from his solo album.

All of that being said, there are some redeeming elements. We finally have a studio version of Trouble, a song that has been a hit in concert for the last couple of years. The last track on the CD, "Bad Girl" is also really excellent.

If you love the Mouth as I do, you should pick up this CD. Because - let's be honest - any CD by Cowboy Mouth is worth listening to. If you are just getting started with Cowboy Mouth, I would recommend Are You With Me or Easy before purchasing this album.

4 out of 5 stars Cowboy Mouth releases another great disc!.......2003-08-20

This is a great album! However, if you're looking for any sensitive, introspective songs from Fred (who wrote the songs for most of the album), you'll have to listen to some of their older albums.

Griff's "Can't Stay Here" rocks my socks and has a killer bassline. Paul's "Invincible" is awesome, but it's not as great as the version from Hurricane Party. Fred singing on "Senseless" was a bit of surprise, too.

But, heck, I can point out all the faults I want till I'm blue in the face and every time I listen to Uh Oh I fall in love with it again. (Uh-oh! I'm falling in love again! Sorry...I couldn't resist.)

Over all, if you're checking out Cowboy Mouth for the first time, I'd be reluctant to recommend this to you because their other albums are much better, but it's still darn good.

If you're a long time fan of the Mouth, then you should definitely add this to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Still Sounds Good.......2007-07-07

As far as a pop album goes, this is a very well produced album. I'll admit I am biased as I was subjected to this at a good time in my life. However, I think you'll find some excellent production quality and musicianship. Such songs as "Monkey Man" display very good composition and choice of sound. If you enjoyed Talking Heads catchy tunes, I think you'll like this. Regardless of ego or reasons for the fallout of TH, Byrne has chosen professional musicians to execute his dream. All around a very good play.

5 out of 5 stars Forever praise the crude cartoon dog!.......2007-01-22

Pop stars rarely outgrow their first success. Type-cast Medusa fashion into rigid icons, they struggle against loyal worshippers who seek their own immortality by freeze-drying the symbols of their melting youth in an ageless wax museum. Elvis' fans sought this kind of preservation. They didn't really want him to grow up. But his expanding girth and failing health reminded his followers that their time too would arrive. So a mourning generation youthified and resurrected him in a pantheon of impersonators more numerous than Hindu Gods. Mummified in stage lights, the King still lives unchanged.

Few pop culture icons avoid this suspended animation of perpetual youth. The remaining Beatles appear far more as the 1960s loveable mop tops than the old men they have become. Images of the young Diana Ross outnumber recent photos of her by an enormous margin. Obituaries of celebrities from bygone eras always sport a historic photo (see Lillian Gish, Janet Leigh, Sandra Dee; the media does allow men to age somewhat, but not most women). All of this suggests that change and age remain anathema in the realm of entertainment. Enter facial surgery, various bodily implants, and the incessant emphasis on a star's single most successful hit song, movie, or persona.

Somehow David Byrne evaded most of this mess. His polymorphic career has embraced change, experimentation, and intelligence. Even his previous band, Talking Heads, morphed from release to release. Some have called the transition from the albums "Fear of Music" to "Remain in Light" the most radical transformation ever accomplished by a rock band. Once Byrne went solo in 1989, he continued his incessant exploration. "Rei Momo," expanding on the Talking Heads' final album "Naked," plunged head first into Latin music styles. Some reveled in the blaring horns and hip gyrating rhythms. Others, maybe inspired by cultural freeze-drying, bemoaned that the quirky king of rock's fringe had abdicated. In 1992, those same querulous types welcomed Byrne's second solo album, "Uh-Oh," with wide open limbs. Why? Because "Uh-Oh" sported music more akin to Talking Heads than "Rei Momo."

From the pulsating discotheque sounds that launch the album, it becomes clear that "Uh-Oh" is no "Rei Momo II." "Now I'm Your Mom" celebrates sex change as a natural and even a beautiful human act. "I was your dad," Byrne sings, then rockets his voice into squeaky falsetto for the line "Now I'm your mom!" The song's infectious grooves will even have hardcore conservatives caroling about the joys of transsexuality. "Girls On My Mind" delves into the straight man's psyche via a demented honky tonk beat. Byrne sent the ominous "Something Ain't Right" to the brilliant Tom Zé for arranging. Zé's contributions include the whistles, groans, tweets, and flutters that pervade the song. In the song's angry climax, Byrne shouts to the sky "come on down you old fart let's see if you've got a heart!" "She's Mad," the closest Byrne has come to a solo hit, received ample airplay on alternative stations. The song's video featured then shockingly novel digital morphing effects. Byrne becomes a house, a sheep, a bunny, amongst other things. "Hanging Upside Down" explores the ups and downs, but mostly the downs, of mall culture. "Tiny Town" revisits the theme Byrne expounded in "The Big Country." It still doesn't sound like he'd live there if you paid him.

The album's not so subtle cover depicts a horde of angels praising a rather crude Snoopy-esque cartoon dog on a throne. Uh-Oh, indeed.

"Uh-Oh" remains one of Byrne's most enjoyable solo efforts. It covers new ground while incorporating African and Latin American styles. The album also carried on his tradition of transformation. "Uh-Oh" sounds different than any of his other releases. Nonetheless, his career has had a strange consistency to it and "Uh-Oh" fits right in. Square peg square hole. Byrne somehow seems exempt from the mainstream mantra of sameness. His subsequent releases, four to date, exemplify this. Who could freeze-dry this guy? Impossible. Plus, Byrne has allowed age to catch up. He now sports a head full of spiky gray mad scientist hair. He lives on, changed, and, like everyone, forever changing.

5 out of 5 stars David's Best Solo Album.......2006-01-24

I am surprised this album doesn't get more praise. It was glanced over. A shame because songs like "Something Ain't Right" and "Twistin In The Wind" are the best he's ever written. Maybe it is because side two only contains two immediate standout winners. The rest does grow on you though and overall this is a masterpiece. If you buy one David Byrne record this is an easy choice.

5 out of 5 stars This album is amazing.......2005-08-12

This is the greatest piece of music I have ever heard. Out of my 300 cds, I listen to it the most. It is great to work out to, to drive to, to do anything to. I've been listening to it for 12 years and still find sneaky little percussion nuances that I didn't realize were there. Everything else by Talking Heads and byrne solo, while still brilliant, is not on the same plane. Hilarious lyrics, irresistable grooves, totally original songwriting, white hot rhythm, a masterpiece. When was the last time a song made you feel angst ridden and ecstatic at the same time? "Something ain't right" does.

5 out of 5 stars Heads....We Don't Need No Stinkin' Heads.......2005-04-29

This is by far my favourite David Byrne album. And as mentioned above, there was little traditional promotion for this album. However, the videos are all gems. (Too bad - my VHS copy of a Muchmusic spotlight which ran them all is faded and finally wore out. DVD pretty please.) She's Mad got a lot of airplay and a nomination at the MTV video awards. But Girls on my Mind and Hanging Upside Down are classic vids as well.
This is an album that dispite its varied influences and mixing of music styles flows from beginning to end so well that you could have it on repeat and not get tired of it. And I dare not to sing to it when no one is around.(Hey , Look at Us now. hey look at us now. Look at us n-n-n-now . Hey Hey hey!)

4 out of 5 stars New to this genre..........2004-05-17

...and I like what I hear. I picked up both Tipsy CD's, Uh-Oh and Trip Tease and I love them both. I usually listen to all sorts of progressive rock and other neighboring genre's of music. I look at music this way; if it is inventive, rich, moody, atmospheric, complex, quirky, mindbending to name a few adjectives, I will like it if it is done well. In any event I heard a song from Tipsy on a live365 channel named "psychic vibebot radio". I looked up Tipsy on Amazon.com and listened to the rest of the samples and liked the atmosphere the music conveys. I was immediately sold. This happens occasionally with me when I hear something interesting coming from the speakers and I knew right away that I wanted to have this type of music in my collection. I think Triptease is slightly better but I love Uh-Oh just the same.

4 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Lounge on a Forbidden Planet!.......2004-02-16

This is one of the quirkiest CD's I have ever purchased. It is difficult to describe the sound exactly but if a combo of Lounge/Bad European 60's movies/Electronica/Go-Go is your bag, then this is for you.

Some exceptional tracks are:

"Reverse Cowgirl" which sounds like Beck meets Cibo Matto meets Hank Williams meets the Jetsons...figure that one out?

"Hard Petting" which is right out of a late 60's Euro-trash movie or maybe one of those goofy "Our Man Flynt" movies...kinda kitsch spy and Italian/French movie where they are driving around in a convertible down on the coast..you know what I mean, the slide whistle really adds a powerful kick.

"Papaya Freeway" is like Martin Denny on a far out trip, if you can imagine that one, like tropics meet forbidden planet.

"Sweet Cinnamon Punch" reminds me of some off the wall 60's movie where you are prety sure something naughty is going on but all the bizzarre swooping camera angles make it a bit unlcear, on the other hand I can see Barbarella floating around to this as well.

Overall, I really give this 4 1/2 stars, it is spectacular background music for your oh so hip cocktail party!

5 out of 5 stars Tipsy improves on perfection!.......2003-02-07

Tipsy's first release, "Trip Tease", revitalized my interest in the world of music. Through them I discovered somewhat similar bands such as Lemon Jelly, though no one quite came close to Tipsy's mix of electronica, eclectica, and lounge. With their second album, they seem to have grown up a bit. But fear not, this is still the same fun-loving music presented on "Trip Tease".

Musically, I find this album to be a little darker than the first one. It is still great music to clean house by, but at the same time if it is playing and you are doing nothing else, it can start making you think before you realize it. Rather than the bubble-like gems of the first album, these songs are more like uncut opals--attractive any way you look at them, but truly sparkling under close scrutiny over time. "Fur Teacup", for example, is on the surface a typical Tipsy composition, fun and engaging. But upon closer listening it shows the influences of many types of music, such as using Middle Eastern flutes, and suddenly you realize you're actually listening to a very profound piece.

"Uh-Oh" is not so much an improvement on the first album as it is simply an evolution of that sound. The first CD makes a great pool-party CD, but what "Uh-Oh" accomplishes is a little more tricky: it is not only a great party album, but one that can make you have the profoundest revelations if you listen to it in the dark, alone. Bravo Tipsy!

4 out of 5 stars Big Bill's #31 of 2001.......2002-01-03

Here's some weird stuff. Sounds as if the people who do the music at the kiddie land in the amusement park has been spending all their money on ..., ..., and good old fashioned .... This is the kind of music that would be the ideal soundtrack for a movie about a carnival where the clowns, cute and funny, start offing people left and right with an axe in the funhouse, and the audience laughs their asses off in the theater. There's no way to describe this music. No influences, maybe if Walt Disney hired ... to conduct an orchestra about some drug dealer mouse that sells narcotics to flying penguins. In a world all on it's own. Just try it. Be brave.

2 out of 5 stars When spontaneity becomes predictable........2001-11-21

Unlike some of the high-quality Asphodel offerings, Tipsy's Uh-Oh is Ho-Hum. "What?!" you say. "I thought Tipsy was playful and spontaneous." Well, yes and no. Track 2 whips off the starting line with camp, retro sounds, arpeggiating harps, and cute vocal samples. It is like a caricature of a 60's TV commercial or theme song and, standing alone, it is pretty cool. But the listener soon realizes that the wacky samples and sound effects are part of a formula, and by track 3 or 4, the joke isn't funny, or even toe-tapping anymore, just tiresome. As an example, one of the later tracks starts with an excellent quarter-speed sample of some guitar music with a nice bass line, but sure enough it breaks into a playful trot (with a lame Theremin whistling the melody, or maybe it's an organ, but you get the idea) totally breaking the spell. The problem is the lack of ideas. When a theme has gone through about 16 bars of repetition, it rear-ends another theme that goes on to rear-end another. These aren't mixes, they're histologically incompatible grafts. They aren't songs, they're "what do I do next? I can't think of anything so I guess I'll close my eyes, reach into the hat, and splice the next 16 bars on."

Wow, this review seems excessively harsh, but Uh-Oh is frustrating because: 1) it is an Asphodel release, and they have done right in the past and 2) there are a few good tracks on this CD (LP) that undoubtedly took some effort, like tracks 1 and 2, and some of the darker tracks that other reviewers have bellyached about. These tracks tell me that Tipsy is capable of better stuff and that Uh-Oh isn't worth your money. If Tipsy is reading this review then sorry, guys, for being so mean. No, wait, I'm not going to apologise; I really don't like this record. Oh, hell, OK, I'm sorry. But I'm not going to buy another Tipsy. I'll save my money for We's next release.

I dont get the name of the band or the album... Its good tho. Sounds like the best of Smashing Pumpkins, but with more variety. Pretty mellow and "cool", the kind of CD I'd play for other people to hear. Listen to the samples, and if they sound like your style, go for it.

Man am I brad is the debut record of Champaign, IL rockers, Everybody Uh-Oh. This band is on a champaign record label Arborvitae
which also has some solid bands on it including Utah! and Volta do Mar. On Man am I brad the listener is confronted with 10 tracks each
presenting a seperate treat. One is quite apparent of a billy corgan influence here throughout the album, but sometimes the band breaks
away from their influences and actaully shines on their own. I think on track 2 'Serious Mode' the band's melodic content is at its prime.
typical crowd pleaser and last song when playing live, track 6, 'Keeping up With the Joneses' is a solid rocker defintiely showing homage
to their god, the smashing pumpkins. Overall the production work done by 20 year old producer Matt Mehlan at the TIMARA studios at
Oberlin was quite impressive, and shows promise as a young talent. This album "man am i brad" is a good starting point from the band,
its shows they have potential, and much room for improvement as they tone their sound from the cornfields of champaign urbana.

4 out of 5 stars An instant hit!.......2003-06-27

We first borrowed this CD from the library--but then had to buy our own copy! My 4-yr-old son and 2-yr-old daughters love it--the title song really makes them giggle. Definitely worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Rosenshontz is amazing!.......2000-10-09

All of Rosenshontz's music is amazing. The songs are hysterical and adults love them just as much as kids do. These songs will stay with your kids their whole lives, and they will still be able to sing them to you twenty years from now.

Peter's songs are always fun to hear and helpful to children. He's got a talent for getting into a kid's head and singing about it in a way they can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Best CD In My Radio.......2005-05-20

I've known the artists of Justus Boyz for ever(i wasnt even born when my parents knew them) and i've never ever listened to any of their Cd's. but one day i decided to steal this Cd From my dad and listen to it. and ive liked it ever since! i listen to it everyday at home. i even took pictures with them so when everybody has their cd's i can be like "hey i knew them first" and then all my friends would be jelous but then i can introduce them and be nice about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Retro-flavoured Gold Mine.......2005-02-14

Wow! I'm a 80's music fanatic... so, boy was I thrilled to stumble upon Justus Boyz. If an act that sounds like a cross between Erasure and The Cars is your thing, then you will no doubt fall in love this album. My two favourite key tracks are Uh Oh and Forever Man....but there is so much more here to enjoy as well. Great great hooks (and beats) laced throughout the enire disc. I'm always bopping my head everytime I play it. If you like retro flavoured 80s music, Justus Boyz will definitely leave you smiling ear to ear.
Lots of ear candy. My friends love it too. Retro, yet fresh.
Radio should be this exciting. Thank god for internet radio. That's where I discovered them.
Judging by the pics on their album, they're not too hard to look at either.
    Can't wait to hear more!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars GUILTY PLEASURE.......2004-11-25

    Justus for All

FOT (that's Friends of Towleroad) Justus Boyz, have their song "Uh Oh" posted on one of my favorite mp3 blogs, Fluxblog. Matthew Perpetua writes "This may end up being your guilty pleasure, but I am unashamed, and neither are the Justus Boyz. It takes some real courage and conviction to make music like this, and your target demo doesn't even know who you are because you don't have Girls Aloud or Justin Timberlake's promotional budget. This CD includes the same recording that is featured on the limited edition CD "Live And Well In Hell"---but features totally different artwork! Get it while you can! When it is gone---that's it! The music was recorded live at the D'Anza Theater in Riverside in March of 1984.

      Product Description

"Fritz" is none other than Fritz "Da Fritz" Hasenpusch, a major creative figure in Hawaii's proto-rock scene in the '80s as a member of Shnazz and the Heebee Jeebee Bros. Both were cutting edge; the Heebs' single, "Merry Merry Christmas Baby," was one of the best written Christmas songs of the Reagan-Bush era. Hasenpusch hasn't lost his edge as a musician or writer. He has a talented partner in John "Bobo" Newman. Think Zappa or Dead Milkman or Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper -- that's where they're coming from. Strong undercurrents of comic irony flow through the power-rock opener, "Candyapple Metalflake Pinstriped Buddah," and a tongue-in-cheek love song, "Trailer Park Princess." Other songs address the "My god is better than your god" syndrome or explore comic horror/sci-fi themes.

5 out of 5 stars Tales of Life as observed and decoded from other frequencies.......2007-05-28

"Oh Oh" is an irreverant but certainly relevant multi-dimensional look at the life we all lead today....whether we realize it or not. Extremely well crafted and performed with great precision, style and energy, Fritz and BoBo
really have created something different here. Each tune is an adventure unto itself. Listen to the lyrics carefully to get the full dosage of the potent medicine you will find here. Just buy it and see. This is nothing like the other CDs in your collection and this is the one you'll be putting on for your friends to experience....
