Classic Italian Hits from the 70s.
Most appear to be re-recorded in the 1990s as is the case for all of these ZYZ 2-CD collections under the heading The World of Italian Hits. The songs in this collection lack the charm of those found in the 50s and 60s Collections. In those collections, there are greats songs, well sung and tastefully arranged, that sound like they are straight out of the Italian-language section of a fakebook of any band that has played at an Italian-American wedding in the past 40 years. And for that reason, there is a lot of charm.
Much the 70s stuff has a certain cheesy element, as was typical of much US disco music of that same period. The nadir of this collection is a very sad 90s era re-recording of L'Arca di Noe by the legendary Sergio Endrigo, one of the all time songwriter/singers of Italian popular music. Apparently, this great artist was in poor health when he recorded this song, one of his many masterpieces. Here, his intonation and tone are very bad. What a pity! ZYX should have left that cut out. If you want to hear Endrigo at the height of his powers, buy is Giri 45 double-CD collection or even better, get the L'Arca di Noe of his 1970 concert in Milano. A classic!
I would have given the collection three stars but am registering my disapproval with this lower rating.
