In addition to raising public consciousness about the dangers of nuclear power, the 1979 series of star-studded anti-nuclear concerts at Madison Square Garden were a significant event both musically and historically. The shows were immortalized in a feature film and on this 2 CD set. Among those featured on the album are such '70s soft-rock icons as Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, James Taylor, Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers, and Crosby, Stills and Nash, along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Ry Cooder, and Gil Scott-Heron for a token dose of grit. Inevitably, Springsteen's "Devil with the Blue Dress Medley" steals the show, but otherwise No Nukes doubles as both a handy '70s-rock sampler and a historical keepsake. --Scott SchinderCustomer Reviews:

The geniune love, care and respect these artists had for each other and mostly the earth and it's future generations pours through on every note.
fighting fission with fusion.......2005-03-23
1979 was a strange, transitional year in music. Disco was all but dead, yet it's brief success had ushered in a retreat from the expansive progressive rock that had enshrined the late 1960's and early 1970's. Something new had to be on the horizon, even with Bruce Springsteen assuming the role of heir apparent to those who would proclaim (along with Neil Young) that "rock and roll will never die". No one could have predicted, however, that even for Neil Young, the 1980's would plunge rock and roll even deeper into an abyss of ill-employed synthesizers, and open the door for a reborn Michael Jackson and the birth of a Madonna as the dominant forces on vinyl and cassette.
So 'No Nukes' offers one last gasp for the faithful few from the golden age of rock and roll who had somehow weathered the disco storm. Virtually all of the performers are in their prime, and some, such as Nicolete Larson, Raydio, Tom Petty, and even Bonnie Raitt, are able to truck in some pretty recent hit material. The Doobie Brothers, who open and close the set presented here, are in top form as well. The Crosby, Stills and Nash tracks sound a bit dated, even though they are preceded by Springsteen's covers of four songs that pre-date anything CSN offer up. There is more crowd noise on the softer tracks than one would wish (why would anyone even want to unleash a two-fingered whistle in the middle of a song like 'You Don't Have To Cry' anyway?). But the boys do serve up an edgy 'Long Time Gone', whose lyrics settle well with the MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) theme. Some of the tracks, such as CSN's closer, 'Teach Your Children', and Jesse Colin Young's Youngblood's classic 'Get Together' are marred by the dreaded audience sing-a-long... a nice one-time experience for the audience, but torture for the owner of the recording who must listen to a mass of amateurs singing like a tone-deaf choir over and over and over...
While everyone can find something to like on 'No Nukes', it's also likely that it's wide range of artists and genre's will guarantee there is something you won't like. While most of the tracks were either hits (consider James Taylor and Carly Simon belting out a live version of 'Mockingbird') or the main attraction on studio LP's (Jackson Browne's 'Before the Deluge'), some out-of-the-mainstream material also appears, such as John Hall's 'Plutonium Is Forever', which lends a sarcastic twist of the knife into the nuclear power industry's back. Predictably some tracks that look good on paper come across uninspired, such as the James Taylor-Carly Simon-Graham Nash take on Dylan's 'The Times They Are A-Changin' and Ry Cooder's 'Little Sister', which you keep waiting to take off but just keeps circling the tarmac.
The liner notes are extensive, but oriented toward an indoctrination for the 'No Nukes' agenda rather than commentary and anecdotes surrounding these Madison Garden concerts. If this was all the information you had, you would undoubtedly conclude Jimmy Carter was a fool for not installing a line of windmills along the Continental Divide, and a massive array of solar panels covering the southwestern U.S. Oh, well, at least it gave some of these soon-to-be-out-of-work artists one last excuse to fuse their talents before they turned out the lights on the 70's (pun intended). Four stars 'cause Stephen plays some wicked guitar, but I may be straining my credibility.
Worth it for "Power" alone.......2004-01-10

The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15
But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.
The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.
Pure delight.......2003-08-02
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.
--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.
--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).
--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.
--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.
--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.
--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

If Only It Didn't Become A Budget-Buster.......2006-11-15
Van Zandt had left Springsteen to form his own band and release this Stax/Volt-influenced album in 1982. The songs were loosely based on Men Without Women, a 1927 collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway. The initial plans for the album and ensuing promotion was absolutely fantastic; an all-star cast of studio performers, a band that featured the outstanding bass player, Jean Beauvoir, and Felix Cavaliere on piano/organ, and the production of a long-form movie, with the album being the soundtrack.
But Van Zandt did not have a safety net that an established hit-maker like Springsteen could use when the project came in well over budget. Though the album received decent reviews, it could only stagger to a ranking of 118 on the Billboard 200, with the single, Forever, stopping at number 40 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The music has held up well over the ensuing 25 years and remains - depending on how one views the project - a tribute to a musician who wanted to test the bounds of innovation for his first project, or a plan closer to another Hemingway title for a short-story collection, Winner Take Nothing.

On the surface, bandleader, songwriter, clarinetist, comedian, and (most of all) entertainer Mickey Katz is a sort of Jewish-style Spike Jones. Schmaltzy comedy and frenetic klezmer riffs combine to create humorous skits that were part borscht belt, part vaudeville. But listen here to Katz's one "straight" album--the legendary Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs and Brisses, recorded in the early '50s for Capitol--and you find a true musician who could swing with jazz's best, a guy with faultless timing and a great sense of humor. On "Frailach Jamboree," he takes the upbeat traditional klezmer pattern (the frailach) and proves he and his band have impeccable timing; the next tune takes klezmer the way of Raymond Scott, the cartoon-music pioneer; on "Simcha Time," he rounds up the whole circus--bride, groom, and family (this is music for weddings, after all)--and happily informs you that the show is going to begin. Whether he's writing cancans or covering "Sunrise, Sunset," you can't help but admire Katz's musical, and comedic, genius. Don Byron achieved acclaim for his album of Katz interpretations, Plays the Music of Mickey Katz, but this is the original thing. And what a gorgeous shtick it was, now--thankfully--reissued entirely on CD with bonus cuts from Hello, Solly, his Broadway musical, and five previously unreleased tunes. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
For eight years now, Bobby Wratten of Trembling Blue Stars has been composing startlingly intimate, deeply emotional love songs that deal with infatuation and obsession, longing and lust, rapture and regret. In spirit, his work recalls the youthful candor of seventies singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and Joni Mitchell as well as the melancholic romanticism of Nick Drake. In sound, however, his material is far more up to the minute, artfully incorporating elements of electronic dance music and computer-generated ambient touches.TBS songs are often heartbreakingly specific. A girl stands poised before a jukebox, intently contemplating the ten plays she'll get for a dollar. A man at an airport terminal window turns his back on a departing plane, unable to watch his lover leave and, perhaps, a relationship end. A couple takes a respite from their troubles and the din of the city by dozing off side by side in the pastoral oasis of London's Kensington Gardens. While there is a brooding tone to the album, the overall mood is brighter and more hopeful than on prior discs - -a hint of the dawn that all the late-night darkness had promised at its end. The arrangements are simple but almost cinematically stirring, with bedroom instrumentation yielding big-screen effects.
Customer Reviews:
some outstanding songs.......2006-09-22
It's the case of all the TBS albums I know; about half is great, half I could live without(usually not bad, just kinda plain).
Great voice, nice arrangments, incredible guitars, beautiful melodies make this band a favorite of mine. Robert Wratten is somewhat of a genius.
On this CD I love Helen Reddy(rocks), beginning of a kind, moonlight on snow, Kensington garden and last port of call, all four have melodies and arrangments I find beautiful.
I also like a lot open skies(despite the simple drum machine beat and casio sound) and hurry home through the crowd.
I'd give 5 stars if the songs I find weak weren't there.
Personally, I'm glad the bonus songs are there, some of which I praised above.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like TBS don't miss this CD.
If you like this type of music, check Mojave3, starting with out of tune, their second and(to me) most accomplished album. Neil Halstead's also a melody genius with a golden voice. Worth knowing...I got a lot of listening pleasure from most of their songs(though I don't care for puzzles like you, their new CD at this time, I find it commercial, "bubble gum").
Trembling? Not so much........2005-02-27
Bobby Wratten got the name for his London-based band, Trembling Blue Stars, from a line in "The Story of O", librarian Pauline Reage's classic novel of S&M erotica. The similarities end there. "The Seven Autumn Flowers" is about as dangerously erotic as a handshake with your grandmother. Most of the songs on the album are the kind of melancholic romantic thing you hear in the last couple minutes of a teen television drama. You know, the slow, steady strum of an acoustic guitar, the soft, sensitive male vocals, and all the characters feeling bad, hugging, taking walks by the water, etc. Just imagine Matt Pond PA's "New Hampshire" being played on "The OC" (which actually happened recently).
Don't take this the wrong way; "Autumn Flowers" is a pretty good listen. There are some real gems to discover on this heartbreaking album. "The Rhythm Of Your Breathing" features a nice click-clack rhythm and a lovely chord progression that will keep you listening. The beautiful "One Prayer Answered" is simple and sweet, featuring a very romantic violin filling in the background in places. Backup vocalist Beth Arzy adds her brilliance to "Helen Reddy" and "Further to Fall." On the pensive, paralyzed "All I'm Doing Is Losing," Wratten sings, "I waited at the airport gate/ until your plane started to move." It's an effective, emotional song with a story, like so many songs on this album.
"Kensington Gardens," is a wonderful closer. Unfortunately, the American release of "Autumn Flowers" features four bonus tracks that actually detract from the overall product. However, the extra tracks aren't a complete loss, with "Hurry Home Through the Crowds" perhaps the best song on the whole album.
Running at sixteen songs and seventy-five minutes, "Autumn Flowers" can get a little old. You pretty much have to be in the same sorrowful mood as the lead singer to really enjoy it.

Southside has done some good work since this but he has never concentrated so mush good work in one album. It's a very upbeat set of songs.
