5 out of 5 stars THESE ARE MY BOYS!!!.......2007-05-16

I have to be honest and say that Men Of Standards worst album (which was not that bad) was their first one, which was on a different label. I love these guys, because they can really sing, every last one of them can sing lead and that's pretty rare these days. They have had different producers, but they still produce a quality product. The only problem I had with this album is it's too dawg gone short. I recommend this album and all of the ones before it, even the first (so you can appreciate the evolution of these guys).

5 out of 5 stars Men of Standard.......2007-05-08

It has been a while since they have come out with a new project. This is well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the time to listen to cd in its entirety........2007-03-29

There is a different message with each song and each song has a different beat.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-03-07

Loved it! Wish there were more songs on the album though. Great Job!

3 out of 5 stars It's been ten years since their debut.......2007-02-13

It's been ten years since their debut and, for this fifth album, followers of Men Of Standard will notice that they are now a trio, with Michael Bacon's amicable parting from the set-up. Both Men Of Standard and their fans will hope that there will be no obvious gaps in Surrounded. Multi-tracking can assist of course - more importantly, has this reliable outfit re-grouped sufficiently and defined themselves enough to continue in a viable way. Though not to mention help from technology Kirk Franklin, Heavy D and the up-and-coming Tye Tribbett make appearances here, helping further to fill things out.

Men Of Standard start things off with four straightforward floor stompers; `I Will', the pulsing `Power' and `Everybody' are pretty much par for the course and there's a 1980's reggae cut `Alright' (hmm... fair enough but juts out like a sore thumb). Then they take things down in places with strong live efforts; the beautiful `Cover Me', the title track `Surrounded', the prayerful `Latter Rain' and the driving `I'm Yours'. Slow jams such as `Last Time' and `I Need You' also feature.

But I do sense a `business as usual' approach here, and the boat is not pushed out as far as it could be. Lyrics and vocal deliveries are powerful, heartfelt and genuine - however the production stays well within musical boundaries we are well-acquainted with the gospel genre. Overall Surrounded plays well but little of it jumps out at you.

Album Description

After parting ways with the Sugarcubes, the Icelandic band and alt-pop/rock phenomenon she fronted to stardom, Bjork launched a spectacularly successful solo career in 1993. Her aptly titled first album Debut was a smash in the U.K., where it was NME's Album of the Year and won her the Newcomer and International Female Solo Artist categories at that year's BRIT Awards. In the U.S., the disc was a gold album and a #1 Billboard Heatseeker, announcing her arrival as a major new talent. This distinctive singer-songwriter's artistry continued to evolve through an acclaimed string of adventurous albums that still sound fresh and exciting. The many sounds of Bjork's truly distinctive dance-flavored, spirited, arty, and elegantly conceived electronic pop are a revelation on Rhino's new DualDisc releases of seven of her classic titles.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bjork's (__Surrounded).......2007-05-08

So it is no question that Bjork is not your typical mainstream artist. She is unlike anything else. She has the voice, the mind, the need, and the power to create and design, beautiful art, whether it is musically, or visually.

In Bjork's new (__Surrounded) you will find everything from the "Debut" in '93 until her latest "Medulla" in '04. Every record on the collection has been re-mastered on the DVD side. They each, except for Selmasongs and Drawing Restraint 9, include their accompanied videos. Those beautifully made videos that can only come from the master mind that Bjork is.

It is no doubt that Bjork grows with time, and this collections shows it. The videos, the music, the arrangements, it all changes, into the world called Bjork. The collection is definitely worth the buy, worth the money and worth the try. Even if you are the biggest fan, or most importantly, have all the CD's, (__Surrounded) is the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Great Box Set.......2007-04-28

I love what they did with it!! Too bad they couldn't fit Screaming Masterpiece in there! It would have made a nice addition.

5 out of 5 stars Just worth the investment.......2007-03-28

And it is much to say. This beautiful box is expensive, but is awesome. Full Bjork's concept, one of the great artist in the modern music's history. The sound is splendid, not DVD Audio but the DTS 96.24 works pefect.
Don't hesitate to buy this one. It's perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Bjork Binge!.......2007-03-18

This is an excellent collection for Bjork lovers. This was what I was looking for, all her English language studio albums and videos. Now if you could get me the singles, b-sides, and remixes into one box set, I'd be golden. Next purchase for me will be her live box set, but one step at a time! Expensive, but worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Not remastered on the CD Side!.......2006-12-24

Yes, the DVD-remastered 5.1 mix sounds terrific, especially when paired with all the right equipment. However, Bjork did not give the stereo originals a sonic upgrade, and her 90s output certainly could've benefited from a digital remastering. If you already own all of Bjork's albums and do not need the 5.1 DVD-Audio, then give this pricey box-set a miss! Otherwise, head for the Greatest Hits, which feature all tracks digitally remastered!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful Native American flute.......2006-07-09

I heard this when I was getting a massage and it was the most relaxing music I had heard. The tranquil flute music with the various birds, water ,etc in the background blend to make a wonderful peaceful sound. I just received it and I listen to it every night before going to sleep. It is very peaceful and relaxing. I would recomend this to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Nature Surrounds Me.......2005-09-06

Marina Raye's music is almost, or perhaps is, a religious experience. Her music can speak to the empty spaces within, filling them up with energy and peace. While Snow Falling On Silence is my favorite Marina Raye CD, Liquid Silk is the CD that first introduced me to Marina Raye and encouraged me to purchase more or her work. Definitely a worthwhile CD.

5 out of 5 stars Liquid Silk.......2005-01-31

I recently purchased the Liquid Silk CD by Marina Raye and would highly recommend it for anyone who is seeking a quick and sure means of relieving stress. The soothing sounds of falling water and nature sounds, coupled with the haunting melodies of Marina's flute, is truly a gift for the soul. Her Native American influence is evident in her music, and is so stirring that you can almost imagine the sun shining thourgh the trees of an ancient forest, as you lounge in its shady nooks. In addition to Liquid Silk, I would also recommend another CD from Marina, titled Snow Falling On Silence. This collection offers peacefull harp sounds that fluidly compliment Marina's flute. If you are seeking to create a tranquil environment to ease you through a hectic day, or looking for music to enrich your sense of well being, then I most readily recommned Marina Raye's compositions.

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful & Refreshing.......2004-09-02

I grew up in a suburb of Clevland at a time when Native Americans were still referred to as "Indians" and that Yahoo fella on the Cleveland Indians baseball team was the most "Indian" I ever saw. At that time there were still countless acres of virgin forest in the area, some of which I hiked, and being an avid reader of indian literature as a child, I developed a deep respect for those who walked that land before me. The walks in the forest became journeys into a peaceful spiritual place that left me relaxed and refreshed. I learned to "walk like an indian" and experience my place in the natural order rather than assume myself to be the centerpiece. Leaving my stressful world and entering into that realm of spiritual peace and refreshment helped me get back to center, so to speak.

When I first heard Marina's music, I was reminded of my forest meditations as a child. Restful, yet so refreshing and invigorating. It is music that doesn't put you to sleep, but relaxes you, releasing stress and letting your energy surface. One of the more practical uses I have for my Marina CDs is to keep me at peace when doing a chore I typically do not like to do. The anger, irritation, or whatever it is, just does not surface, and I am at peace and just feel great. The peace some people find in meditation, I find in my forest walks, and in Marina's music! I can leave my stressful world and enter into that realm of spiritual peace and refreshment.

5 out of 5 stars Liquid Silk.......2004-04-21

This was my first Marina Raye CD, and I love it. I can't
wait to purchase more of her music. Her songs uplift my soul
and inspire me.

4 out of 5 stars If you don't know what you're talking about, shut the h*ll up!.......2006-02-14

First of all, if you have even ONE Green Day song in your collection, even by accident, (I'm looking at you "IJ" from Puerto Rico) you are beyond help and have zero credibility when it comes to reviewing a metal album, or any album for that matter. Secondly, if you don't know what a death metal growl sounds like, please don't use the term, mmkay? Are the vocals sludgy? Yes. Is it death metal? No way.
This album will punch you in the face and make you love it. Pop it in, turn it up and watch it suplex you through your coffee table. This album has actually murdered other inferior albums in my collection - it's just that hardcore.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2005-07-06

this album is so heavy sick and dense. the musicianship is top notch and i go as far to say this album will be considered a classic in time, albeit an overlooked classic. So you know, check it out RIFFS AHOY! ps, im aware of the lack of punctuation.

2 out of 5 stars Uh-oh.......2005-03-18

I seen these guys live, not a kid, just too lazy to create an account. The guitar, bass and drums were rumbling like a freight-train. I was ready for the singer to start howling like so many of the other great stoner/sludge bands but then it happened. The vocalists opened his mouth and all I heard was grrr-rooooraoora-grrrr. Come on man the death metal thing has died. It's plenty heavy, the music is great but the singing kills it. I'll go listen to Orange Goblin, Fu Manchu, Nebula, I may find a use for High on Fire but it will probably be when I am pushing some weights. Outside of that it is too grrrro oorrrror arrra for any other use.

2 out of 5 stars UNA PORQUERIA, IN ENGLISH THAT MEANS...........2005-02-03

Well, I read a few reviews, listened to the samples here on Amazon, and bought the cd. My God! Awful isnt word enough to describe this. Ok, the songs alone are ok, but when you listen to the whole cd, is when you realize that those guys doesnt know many chords, and that all the songs sound the same (a few variations), and that the vocals ARE all the same, well, you have a patetic album. Very weak, very boring, nothing new. They could do better, the lyrics are ok, but they need help, like, music lessons, even better, composition lessons. Is really bad when all the songs in your album are identical. My fellow metalheads, rockers, whatever name you want, DO NOT buy this, get a friend to loan it to you, then if you still want it, well, is your $$. But if you want real music, get Death, or Rush, hey, even Green Day is better option. In the end, High on Fire should be left for begginers in the metal world of music.

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Tonnage.......2004-12-03

Warning: this album may cause sterility, or, may undue it depending on your problem. Imagine laying in the middle of the road and having someone drop 3000 pound anvils on your face from 6 stories up. You don't die, you just keep feeling the relentless crushing of your skull. It's a wonderful joyous thing. Indulge.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SURROUND SOUNDS!!!.......2005-12-13

"Surrounded" is a wonderful array of chill out and ambient music that has depth and maturity. It shows that Dave Tipper really knows how to put together some damn good music! Not at all bland or recycled, Tipper produces music fit for that perfect wintery soundtrack, not to mention for the bedroom as well. Beats don't meander or bore you like on most ambient CDs, instead they captivate you at first play and draw you into a world of mysticism and at times danger. Comparisons to Boards of Canada, Mouse on Mars and Telephon Tel Aviv would be appropriate, and rightfully so--Tipper's music gives you that same warm, sensual feeling--just a little more tolerable.

5 out of 5 stars No need to categorize this music: it's extremely original art, pure and simple........2005-11-15

The various tracks that adorn this disk comprise a heart felt story from start to finish. If you appreciate artistic expression for the originality it can express, then there is absolutely no need to compare this to Boards of Canada, Willy Nelson, or J.S. Bach. This is high art.

5 out of 5 stars I'm a bit suprised. .......2005-04-19

So, I expected a breaks album. I like breaks, and someone told me this album was good, so I picked it up.

This is ambient; it reminds me of Boards of Canada. It's amazing. Really, really good stuff. I listen to it in the car, and it makes excellent driving music, almost thematic driving between different neighborhoods with this on.

Phenomenal. Hopefully a ton of people buy this, so Tipper has cash on hand to sit around and produce more amazing stuff.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!.......2005-03-16

i've never really been a fan of down tempo or electronic music. I listened to some here and there but nothing really captivated me as much as this cd did! I recieved this cd from a friend and I must say it is my world now! I love it! It's great for any emotion. I luv how it tells a story and California Rolls--great! There are some tracks that seems nicely eroticlike!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most finely tuned albums I've heard........2004-04-06

I am a new fan of Tipper, I have yet to hear his more dance oriented music, but Surrounded is one of the most amazing albums I have heard--on a production stand-point and a musical stand-point. The high end of this album especially is wonderful, with constant panning of tiny blips and nu-skooly sounds. One of the most dimensional albums I have heard as well. I recommend this to anyone who appreciates any good electronic music--it will blow your mind.

Surrounded By Silence should have been re-titled Bedroom Producer Gone Wild. What's not to adore about laptop sound alchemist Prefuse 73 (Scott Herren), who, like RJD2 and Diplo, crafts rare soundscapes that Bjork fans, backpack rap dukes and Pluto natives adore. But what happens when such sonic experiments go slightly awry? Unlike Vocal Studies, where there appeared to be some cohesive links between tracks, Prefuse goes a bit collabo crazy here, with over a dozen multi-genre guest vocalists and emcee's, with mixed results. When the unlikely duo of Ghostface and El P jump on "Hideyaface", they sound unfocused over Herrens audio clutter, as does the Masta Killa and GZA fuelled "Just The Thought". Was Surrounded Herren's license to indulge his inner RZA or Def Jux (Aesop Rock and Beans also guest)? Perhaps. But when Herren sticks to what he does best, that is, building brilliant found sound collages, and digitizing any thing he can get his hands on, the results are gorgeous; "Expressing Views Is Obviously Illegal" carries that distinctly Prefuse-esque boom bip, as does "Pagina Dos" with it's seductive banjo playing parts. When he teams his beats up with New York electro indie rock scenesters Claudia and Alejandra Deheza from On!Air!Library! on "Pastel Assasins" or Blonde Redhead's Kazu in "We Go Our Own Way", the tracks breathe much better. An uneven yet stimulating listen.-- Dalton Higgins

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant.......2006-10-17

I've owned this album for a long time and listen to it very, very often. I love it. The various songs on this album have changed the way I listen to music. A must-have.

2 out of 5 stars Not remotely on par with his last 2 albums........2006-01-11

It sounds like he's poorly imitating himself on this one. If you want to hear some excellent slice and dice hip-hop glitch instrumentals go with Vocal Studies & Uprock Narratives or One Word Extinguisher.

5 out of 5 stars miraculous anus butter but beware the barber.......2005-12-26

I can barely comment because my ears are bleeding with the glory of this newly picked up CD of the dopest beats I've heard in the past eon. I've been out of new music for quite some time now, sticking to my ol' rack of electro, experimental, underground hip-hop, and barfing noises that i completely, wholly forgot what amazing new music sounds like. It sounds like this.

Mostly instrumentals with bad ass bass, clicks, and pops. Your head bops. Then so does the one sitting atop your neck. Feel your gas. It's so good my mouth waters for you.

This is emotional, digital turntablism at its finest. Conducted was an experiment involving three biphoton interferometry tests in which I was pre-fused with the intentional states of my future self in a galaxy called quartenonia-xr4.3, the last galaxy bordering the external edge of the interdimensional hyperspace manifold. My mouth watered for her gas. Her farts were exceptional, my bleeding eyes extended perpendicular to her vortex. We touched, though there was no part of her continguous with me, and she wasn't even. She wasn't.

I haven't yet returned.

2 out of 5 stars BE FOREWARNED.......2005-12-25

A lot of the people reviewing this album, both on Amazon and elsewhere, don't realize the deceit behind this release. Warp Records and Prefuse 73 try to pass it off as a "new album", but quite a few of the tracks have been previously released. Many of them are remixes Prefuse has done for other artists, simply re-appearing here as "collaborations" with new titles, but are actually completely re-hashed. (He did this at least once on his previous album too). Other tracks here marked as "featuring" someone (such as The Books) are actually just Prefuse raiding the artists' back catalog and sampling it, clearly without any input from the original artist.

To top it off, this album as a whole just isn't that great, and certainly not up to the standard's of Prefuse's previous albums. He tries to cram too many ideas into one song, and it sounds watered down, as if he's on "auto pilot" mode. If you want original, sincere, or challenging music, look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Igloo Magazine's REVIEW.......2005-12-03

Review by: Paul LLoyd at igloomag.com
(04.24.05) With Scott Herren (a.k.a. Prefuse 73) providing the musical backdrop and a whole host of collaborators providing vocal accompaniment, Surrounded By Silence covers a wide range of musical styles from hip-hop, contemporary, R&B, country, funky jazz and orchestral. Amongst the vocalists providing assistance include Ghostface & EL-P, The Books, Kazu from Blonde Redhead, Aesop Rock, Masta Killa, GZA, Claudia & Alejandra Dehaza and more.

What provides the common thread to tie these diverse styles together is Herren's experimental treatment of each musical style represented, cutting it up, reinventing it, adding bassy breaks and samples to completely rewrite musical boundaries. Throwing in hip-hop samples throughout, Surrounded By Silence presents an initially bewildering array of musical styles patched together in a frantic collage of sound. "We Go Our Own Way" featuring Kamu (Blonde Redhead) is particularly memorable for her silky seductive and quite unique vocal delivery along with tense, vaguely ethnic, jazzy breaks. Although representing a completely different genre, "Sabbatical With Options" featuring hip-hop talent Aesop Rock is equally good with Rock's rant about needing to get out of the city set to slick hip-hop beats and an acoustic guitar backing. With "Just the Thought," jabbing breaks and computer game blips sit alongside hip-hop verses from Masta Killa and GZA. On the other end of the scale is "Pastel Assassins" featuring the ethereal vocal talents of Claudia & Alejandra Dehaza providing a dreamy contemporary approach over Herren's low-key jittery backing. Then there is "Pagina Dos" that manages to successfully pull off a fusion of hip-hop, breaks and country banjo. Although very eclectic in influence Surrounded By Silence has a consistent hip-hop theme throughout that provides some cohesion and brings the album together nicely.

A diverse sonic collage based on an experimental hip-hop theme that remains an interesting experiment in the fusion of vastly different musical genres. By no means a novelty album or exploitation of bootleg mix culture but an original exploration in sound manipulation that withstands multiple listens. Surrounded By Silence is out now on Warp.

      4 out of 5 stars great piano work-singing so-so.......2006-04-02

This album was done late in Short's life and it shows in his strained singing.Fortunately, his piano work is still fine, and his fellow jazz artists are fine. The album is worth getting for Short's great piano work.A sad farewell to a fine artist,Bobby Short. He sings only on a few numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Short - We Miss You.......2006-01-31

Specific songs forever attach to special performers. Certainly with Bobby Short -a happy upbeat atmosphere, an intimate surrounding with an intent, yet relaxed gathering. This CD answers all that. The lyrics crystal-clear, so younger generations might just stumble onto them and want more.

5 out of 5 stars Now this is what I call great cabaret and lounge music..........2003-12-01

I love to drink a martini and smoke my Cuban cigars to this, and thsi alone... This is one of my most treasured lounge cd's, it's a throwback to those classic lp's recorded in the 50's, you know an old fashion make out record. A sophistocated album to amoke and srink, and converse about exotic places far away that you've traveled to. a great coktail party cd, and Bobby is also an exellent jazz musician, probably one of the jazziest of all the cabareters...

      5 out of 5 stars Bobby's Best!.......2003-02-08

This is Bobby Short like you've never heard him before. The tracks are more instrumental and the collaborative playing of the entire band sparkles. He gives us new interpretations of some classics in his repertoire, and songs I don't believe he has recorded previously. Bobby Short is not sitting still in the 21st Century, he keeps swinging down a brand new avenue.

3 out of 5 stars This cd offers a good selection of standards.......2001-12-26

First I would like to thank Mr. Short for the great songs that he performs on this cd. I have never heard some of these songs sound so good.

For this cd Bobby recorded most of the tunes instrumentaly and threw in a couple vocals for good measure, which is fine with me.
Bobby and his band did a wonderful job of reviving these old work horses. These songs were really played well.

I would like to see Bobby record some more cds along this line. I would be the first in line to buy them.

Recommendation: If you like smooth jazz this cd is for you.

1 out of 5 stars More of the Same, Nashville "Worship" Music........2005-03-29

I've seen Kim Hill live. She can belt out a song with passion and persona. Her interpretations of classics are interesting and inspiring. Too bad you won't find any of this on Surrounded by Mercy.

When corporations want to promote a no-talent cutie-pie, they stick her in a high-tech studio with an overzealous engineer. Somewhere in a sea of overdubs, pitch correction, reverb and cranked up background music, a new pop idol emerges. Apparently, somebody tried to do the same thing with Kim Hill on Surrounded by Mercy, which begs the question, "Why?".

Kim is a genuine talent and doesn't need all that over-production. The CD also featured faux audience interaction to simulate the feel of live worship. This falls into the category of "flawed concept" and has "management decision" written all over it.

Many of the songs start out pretty good. Then the all the production kicks in and Kim Hill gets lost in a downward spiral of too many instruments, too much processing and too many background singers. Yawn.

Kim, take your Gibson and a mini disc recorder to your basement. Play the songs you want to play and sing them the way you want to sing them. Release it on a CD and I'll buy it and play it over and over again. I'm sure tens of thousands of other people will as well.

5 out of 5 stars Best Christian CD EVER!.......2003-11-19

If you only buy one Christian CD, make it THIS ONE! Kim Hill is an inspiration. I wake up singing these songs!

      5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-09-12

This CD was over and above all that I expected. I have several of Kim's CD's and absolutley love her love for Jesus which is so evident in her music. This CD captured my heart with the lyrics and music of true praise, love, and worship of our precious Savior.
      Awesome!!!
