OM Lounge, Vol. 3

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Tranquil, jazzy atmospherics rule on Om Lounge 3. Funk, bossa nova, reggae, and other rhythms can be found here, but all of the grooves are about keeping it mellow. Wordless female vocalizing, warm keyboard tones, and Latin percussion appear again and again on this seamless compilation. The disc, which has its ups and downs, is sometimes marred by truly bland mood music and trite world-music ornaments. On the other hand, the Verbrilli Sound's "Cansada," with its nice synth purr and sweet, funky bass line, is just one standout. Fila Brazillia's "Airlock Homes" surprises with its clarinet and flute textures, and Andy Caldwell's "Tropicalis" updates Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band's elegant savoir-faire. The CD closes with another highlight, John Howard's "Spacewalk," in which moody strings and melismatic vocals glide over a dense rhythmic thicket to create an intriguing funkscape. --Fred Cisterna

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Groove Flows On!.......2007-04-24

The numero 3 release of the now famous OM LOUNGE series. Again this O.L. release is chock full low bpm, full-a-funk, grooves and exceptional musical delights. Again the producers have taken inspiration from every corner of the planet to offer the listener a very satisfing musical journey. Sitars from India are juxtapozed seemlesly into an Afro-Caribbean rhythm...Bhuddist chanting draped over a throbbing beat of the conga drum...European violins soaring over South African souka and more. The experience is quite uplifting and refreshing. I highly recommend the entire series of; Om Lounge. You can't go wrong with these. Bon Appetit.

4 out of 5 stars it's pretty hip.......2005-12-15

It's got a handful of good tunes, otherwise it's forgetable background music. There's definitely better lounge out there elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars I Still Love This Volume.......2004-07-31

After all this time, I still find myself listening to this. If I'm in a grey, chilled out sort of mood, I'll pop it in. Especially in the dog days of winter if I'm in town or simply at home having a drink with a friend. It's perfect for the grind, the cold, the atmosphere to me.

This is the third of the Om Lounge series which spans at least 8 volumes. I never got into the entire series - I was woefully disappointed with the last one. But this one... I still love it. There are some beats on here that hook me. I can understand how others might not rate this as highly - its not necessarily the most original of releases from the time frame it came out (2000). But as I type this, I'm listening to Kevin Yost's "Drums Delicious" and immediately think of that winter when I "discovered" this cd while downtown visiting friends. The beat in it is consistent and has a sort of soulful sample in the background. Other key tracks were King kooba's Kobesq which may seem like a cliche'd sound by todays style, and Fila Brazillia's rather basic "Airlock Homes". But not to be outdone is Soulstice (not to be confused with bossa maestros Soulstance) with "Tenderly". Chaser's cut seems puts the sight of a NY breakdancer in your head when that beat comes on... pretty fresh! My favorite track is People under the Stairs with "Schooled in the Trade", a cut tailor made to have lyrics freestyled over.

All in all, if you're just getting into Om Lounge, this is a great place to start. But of course this is about 4 years old, and there have been many many many more lounge cd's made, and the sound has changed - and to be honest, this is more of a beats styled cd than lounge, in my honest opinion. Check out "Get into the Martini Mood vol 1" for some lounge cuts, and if you dig this, you might like the rest of the Om Lounge series.

4 out of 5 stars Ulti-Vibe.......2004-02-06

I have 4 of the 7+ "OM Lounge" series and this is my personal favorite. Lotsa rhythymic grooves that float away to neverland!!
OM is an excellent label , putting out plenty o' top-notch house, hip-hop and electro-lounge...

5 out of 5 stars Hot. The best series in music right now........2002-08-16
