Music for the Maases

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Kinetic Records presents a career retrospective of Timo Maas, mixed by the tranceman-of-the-moment himself. While a comprehensive collection of works by such a prodigious producer and remixer would be nearly impossible, this two-disc set is a pretty sensational trip through Maas's catalog, the only major omission being his dance-floor wonder "Ubik" (guess we'll have to just be satisfied with its placement on every single other compilation from 2000). The first CD is the real winner here, beginning with what a signature tune for Maas, his mix of Azzido Da Bass's "Doom's Night" and seguing into the loose, rubbery funk of Muse and Mad Dogs. Jan Driver's "Drive By," a definite grower with its crisp and nimble breaks, paves the way for a solid block of the DJ's own tunes, trance numbers lean enough to really showcase whatever shapes Maas throws on top. The first disc ends with Green Velvet's "Flash", in which Maas makes the Kool Keith of techno even more spookily unnerving than he already is. The second disc takes a bit longer to warm up, but eventually it finds its footing with an unreleased vocal track from Lustral. Things get a tad more emotional and epic with O and Poseidon before Maas finally closes with an amusingly disoriented Orinoko track that's so chill it's as if he's heard the call of "Back to mine!" and followed you off of the dance floor and into your living room for the comedown. --Bob Michaels

3 out of 5 stars Has a few good songs.......2007-05-10

This CD has a few great hits on it, but the rest is rubbish. Not really worth spending money on, as there are much better albums out there, especially as electronic music enters a golden age.

2 out of 5 stars weak........2006-06-19

Too fluffy for trance, too thumpy for pop. Remixes should -add something- to the underlying track but I can't tell that any of these are superior to the source material in any way.

Goes to show that every artist can be hit-and-miss, because I thought _Pictures_ was GREAT.

5 out of 5 stars IMPRESSED... VERY IMPRESSED!!!!.......2005-05-08

I must say my fellow Electro heads... and if your one of them, then you know who I'm speaking of... Anyways, I've never really picked up one of Mass's CD's just because??? dont ask.. but once I picked this one up it was like ::jaw just dropped; Zombie look on my face::... I was in AWE... this is a ridiculous 'Set'... I've always heard that Timo was, how can I say this, OFF THE HoOk, and a great DJ/Producer, but you know what? This CD alone, may just inspire me to purchase more of his upcoming, not to mention earlier, CD Projects !!!...

To sum it up, IM JUST IMPRESSED!!! Plain and Simple, IMPRESSED.. Just like when I first heard DJ IIZAE spinning in this small club in New Jersey, I was like 'wow!' and drawn in by his flawless handling of records and the way he builds up a set and gets you on your feet and dancing... Isnt that what its all about?... Dancing?..

Well like I said... I'm I-M-P-R-E-S-S-E-D!!! Impressed w/ Timo on this ONE!!! IM OUT!! Gotta get back to this CD!! Peace!!

3 out of 5 stars He plays other people's records.......2004-04-21

Timo Maas in a German DJ most known for his work with Placebo. Usually I am bored by most DJ mix CDs. But this one sounds like an original album. Maas remixes tracks by Garbage, Moloko, Moby, and of course, Placebo. Garbage's "Breaking UP The Girl" sounds like an electro track. Moloko's "Familiar Feelings" sounds like a calypso funk track. Maas takes a more trance treatment to Fatboy Slim and BT. Moby's "We Are All Made Of Stars" sounds like Joey Beltram. Placebo's "Special K" is another four to the floor stomper. Timo Maas moves in the interstices between trance techno and electro. He seems to adjust his aesthetic to meet to needs of American and British groups and DJs.

2 out of 5 stars Tired.......2004-01-30

This mix sounds very tired. And even though it has a definite sound of mystic-boogie grooves with fascinating effects, fantastic sounds that work together to form a very lively organism, even though the mixing reflects Maas in all of his glory as both an artist and a skilled DJ, even though acid never left his music, and it still has a definite feeling to it, this album has a quality 'surface' sound and this music just wont get certain crowds to dance.
The scene has entered a very technical era where there is a ton of attention being put to the technical qualities of the music. Although the depth of the general sound was getting a little smaller, other qualities have been showing through: minimalism, freshness, out of this world sound.
Timo maas has really been floating on top for a while just picking a much more 'general audience' sound...the fruits of this approach really show through on Music for the Maases 2, Garbage, Fatboy Slim, Moby... I personaly feel that this is a very careless way of treating this music, especcially during these times when its fate depends greatly on the elite group of DJs and the Residents.
One AMAZING track off of here though: Moloko- Familiar Feelings "Timo maas remix" < < < < < < Everybody, start listening to AGORIA

3 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, lacked smooth transition.......2004-05-24

Yet another example of a two disc DJ album where disc 1 leaves you hanging and disc 2 attempts to kiss and make up with you to make the save. Disc 1 moved too quickly from sound to sound. It lacked the smooth transition through sounds that make the greats. There's no feeling in most of disc 1. It brings somewhat of a tacky sound at times. Discs 2 comes back strong to take you for the ride. Yet, not enough to totally rebound from the poor opening act. Peace

5 out of 5 stars Suprising.......2001-07-13

When I first saw this cd I didn't think it would be good but upon taking the advice of a reviewer i decided i would take a chance and buy it. I can't say how happy i am that i bought it it is one of my favorite cd's. he has his own unique and individual style. A great Cd.

3 out of 5 stars Eh...not bad, not good either.......2001-06-03

I had to see what the fuss was being made about Timo Maas, I must say that I am still scratching my head figuring out why people are making much ado about nothing with this guy. Never in my life have I heard anything more repetitive than this cd. One of the reasons why I don't often buy dj mix cds is because I fear that the music will come up a few cards short of a full deck and will be left disappointed. Disc one is definitely disposable and is considered useless to me. Disc two gets somewhat better but not by much. Definitely not one of my better purchases I've made this year.

4 out of 5 stars May not be a great technical mix, but it sure makes you move.......2001-05-26

While Timo Maas has been criticized for creating DJ mix CDs that aren't on the same level as the best in the business, he still manages to create soundscapes that get your head bobbing, toes tapping, and body moving. By the time you get to Timo Maas's own "Schieber 1" on disc 2, if you're not moving, you're either sleeping or dead. I've heard the same things said from multiple reviewers about Paul Van Dyk and Paul Oakenfold (great producers, bad DJs), but there's very little denying that PvD's "Vorsprung Dyk Technik" (disc 1) or Oakenfold's "Resident" have set off that all-important dance response in people that hear them. And if there's anyone who have been lucky enough to hear PvD's live mixes at Homelands or Berlin (or LA for New Years Eve 2000), they know what "producer" guys like this are capable of.

Getting back to Timo Maas, however, there are some transitions that will make you go, "Huh?" (one of them occurs between tracks 5 and 6 on disc 2, which simply don't want to blend with each other at all), but for the most part, this is a solid showcase for Maas' own work, his remixes, and other assorted vinyl that he likes to spin. Solid.

5 out of 5 stars Twisted !!!!.......2001-05-20

When i bought the CD i did not know much about the so called Timo Maas. I knew he remixed Dooms Nite(which is on the CD)nut that was about i At the time i didn't that i was in for a Cd that messes with your head in a sublime dirty twisted manner. Disc one comprises of a multi-genre feeling wher ehte only way to describe it is Maasism as it is his own unique texture. The highlight is the last tarck with the haunting voice with the phrase "Cameras readly prepare to flash" CD 2 is much more slower and progressive and the highlight is the exclusive remix of Lustrals Eveytime with the mysterious vocal effect. If you want a Cd that is twicted and extremly different then purchase this as it is ... up!!

5 out of 5 stars Timo the Maaster.......2003-05-20

This album carries the signature of Timo's unique sound, along with his very original twisted vibe. It's an excellent new sound from track to track, especially the mixing in the vocal tracks. I think it's very fresh. - Great job. Plus the DVD is pretty wild.. This album is an essential!!

White the content is great the fact that all the tracks are combined into one single track on the CD is a real pain as you need to fast forward to whatever track you are wanting.

As for the music itself this is some great stuff, signature Maas and the remixing of broadly recognizable artists is appriciated. The Garbage track remix captures the feeling of the original with a new trance sound.
