Amazon.com essential recording

Post-Beatles, the virtues of deft song interpretation have been consistently devalued in favor of self-contained composer-performers, seldom more so than in the initial response to this sequel to Annie Lennox's triumphant solo debut, Diva. That album's gripping originals deserve acclaim, but the lush Scottish alto remains one of the most riveting pop singers of the past two decades, and this smartly chosen, meticulously arranged collection of cover versions boasts its own abundant charms in her selection of obscure gems and bona fide classics from Al Green, Procol Harum, Neil Young, the Clash, the Temptations, Paul Simon, Bob Marley, and the Blue Nile. The songs are the rightful stars here, and Lennox brings passion and nuance to a set that plays beautifully. From the cinematic heartbreak of "No More I Love Yous" to the faithful recreation of the Blue Nile's "Downtown Lights," this is ravishing pop. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Annie Lennox Conjures Magic With MEDUSA.......2007-03-28

Few artists have pushed the boundaries of pop music more than Annie Lennox, so when I heard she was doing an album of "covers", I must admit I was disappointed. Why would such a creative force choose to rehash hits from other performers? Then, with great trepidation, I listened to MEDUSA, and all my fears we allayed. This is not your average cover album. On the contrary, MEDUSA is pure magic! The opening cut, "No More I Love You's" sets the tone, with a carnival-like atmosphere that is so unlike anything this reviewer had ever before heard, that I was forced to play this cut over and over, even before I advanced to the next song. It was pure rapture, and I was not disappointed as the remainder of the album played on. The classic "Take Me To The River" had an entirely new feel to it, as did the sometimes tired "Whiter Shade of Pale" into which Ms. Lennox breathes new life and soul. With so many strong cuts, it is hard to choose a stand-out, yet in addition to "No More I Love You's", the other favorite is "Downtown Lights". More dramatic that simple pop, these songs act as pure theatre, with Annie Lennox as the Ring Master....and Annie Lennox is one of the few current artists brilliant enough to carry it off. When you listen to MEDUSA, you will recognize the songs, but you will also hear them in a new and exciting way that transforms them into an entirely new work, filled with excitement and a fresh new spirit. This is the perfect cover album...adding new life and dimension to old classics.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant collection of covers..........2007-03-26

I love what Annie Lennox did with the classics on this album. She reinvented these songs (as she often does with her image) as though they were her own compositions...just magical.

I love how she rearranged Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain" from a heavy-based reggae tune to a more acoustic arrangement with a soft horn section playing in the background. The two versions could co-exist side by side and most would think they were two different songs altogether. That is the consistent theme of Medusa - most songs on this album barely sound identical to their original version, with the exception of "Whiter Shade of Pale", which is such a beautiful song in its original form that Annie decided not to mess with a good thing and her take on it is just as lush and warm as the original.

Annie's rendition of Paul Simon's "Something So Right" is beautiful and adds a slightly melancholy finish to the album. Other winners include the grammy-winning hit "No More I Love You's", "Train In Vain" (this will get you dancing) and Neil Young's "Don't Let It Bring You Down". This collection of masterpieces belongs in every Annie fan's musical catalogue.

4 out of 5 stars Medusa by Annie Lennox.......2006-08-10

Annie does a great job with songs done by other performers. I especially like "Waiting in Vain", originally done by Bob Marley. I first heard her version at the end of the movie "Changing Lanes" and had to buy the CD after that. She also does a great job with "Downtown Lights" originally done by The Blue Nile. Several other great songs on the CD.

4 out of 5 stars Icecold soulfreezing musical extragavanza........2006-07-11

Annie Lennox, the voice of Eurytmics, still has the voice power to blow many of here "pop/soulsisters" of the spot. This CD doesn`t dissapoint in this area. Track 1 No more "I love you`s open with a "dubbi dutt singing choir", but when Lennox voice strikes in, it`s clear magic in a passionfull song. Track 2 Take me to the river, is an more uptempo song with somekind of a synth/blues hybrid that Lennox makes here own, and really put`s a signature on it.Track 3 A whiter shade of Pale, the old Procol Harum classic, which Lennox voice lifts it up above average, and makes it "here version" nearly up there with the "original", but how can you go wrong with a cleverliy written gem like this in every musical department. Track 4 Don`t let it bring you down, is more average . The voice is intact, but the melody has a more or less"sleepy atmosphere" that doesn`t make it all trough. Track 5 Train in vain, is more in the funk jazz department. It`s simpel and quite effective. Track 6 I can`t get next to you is a funky matter, that "matters". Effective and strong, with intelligent guitar play helps this one. Track 7 Downtown lights, is a urban pop song, slow in build up, but has lot`s of atmosphere. Track 8 Thin line between love and hate, is one of the weak spots on the CD. The voice of Lennox is mixed so much in front that it`s to much in front. She`s right there in your ear, that`s for sure. Not my cup of tea. Track 9 Waiting in vain, is a cleverly softspoken song, which has the Lennox extragavanza marked all over.
Track 10. Something so right is written by Paul Simon, that Lennox makes a good version of. Lennox
gives us "icecold soul freezing musical extragavanza" on this CD. A CD right there up in the "quality department" this one

3 out of 5 stars Ditch the Drum machine..........2006-07-03

I bought the CD for rendition of "Don't Let It Bring You Down" used in the movie _American Beauty_. The rest of the songs are OK, but too much "techno" and "drum machine" fill in.

I ordered this CD for my husband for Fathers Day. It arrived in perfect condition and several days before Fathers Day. My Husband Loves it. Listens to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Glen Hughes at his best.......2007-02-05

Glen Hughes would get the most out of his vocal talents with the band, Trapeze. Medusa is probably their best effort. I say 'probably' because I haven't heard the self-titled nor anything after 'You are the music..', but a general consensus would say that my hunch is correct.

This is a hard rock trio with true, superb musicianship. Everything great about the way 70s music is recorded shows on this release. The highlight is the song 'Medusa' with it's quiet acoustic opening that leads up to the heavy metal part where Glen screams with his best vocals, 'So you saiiid you saw Medusaaa!! The one with the head of fiii-yaaa!!'

Glen Hughes would go to Deep Purple after the next album and dive deeper into the vast fields of funk and soul never to return. His Stevie Wonder influence really shows on the next album 'You are the music..' and even more so on 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer'. In my opinion, his excitement to be in Deep Purple made him get carried away with his singing (when David Coverdale wasn't) and produced some rather embarassing moments; I.E. sample any live version of the song 'Burn' and you'll see what I mean.

With Medusa, Glen had focus, finesse, and hard rock discipline; which helped to make the album a masterpiece in its own right.

5 out of 5 stars A Lost Classic .......2006-11-01

This is one of the best hard rock albums of the early seventies. Most people who were around in those days (like me) equate this album with the very best rock of the era. Only a tin ear can compare this with the much later, less interesting and somewhat formulaic Judas Priest or Whitesnake. I certainly don't, however, blame any of these musicians (Galley, Holland, or Hughes) for cashing in with the bands they eventually joined. But even Hughes' Deep Purple period (excepting the brilliant "Burn" lp) dims in comparison to this album which is the first lp of the mk II Trapeze lineup.
A little background helps: Trapeze first (self titled) album is a different and larger band with a sound much like "Hush" era Deep Purple-- only not as good.
The second album, "Medusa", is their first recording as a power trio (mk II lineup). Everything about it is excellent with great songwriting dynamics, superb rock riffs and terrific vocals from Hughes. The next album, also mk II, is "You are the Music...", and is almost as good as "Medusa".
The following 2, "Hotwire" and "Trapeze" (not to be confused with the first self-titled lp), are mk III and sans-Hughes but still quite good. As a foursome, Pete Wright replaces Hughes on bass, and Rob Kendrick is added on second guitar.
Those two cd's are now very difficult to obtain collectors items.
Finally, "Hold On" had yet another personnel shift (vocalist Goalby replacing second guitarist Kendrick), but with Stones producer Jimmy Miller at the helm, it's still a worthy swan song and readily available. All of these are good but a bit more pedestrian than the Hughes era.
In summary, anyone interested in the influential but little known band, Trapeze, should snap up a copy of their definitive album, "Medusa".
Free's "Fire and Water", and Humble Pie's "Smokin'" are other essential yet underappreciated classics in this style.

3 out of 5 stars A Classic Perhaps but I'm not Giddy with Excitement.......2006-09-03

Interested in hearing Glenn Hughes' first band recording efforts, I checked out the reviews on Amazon and decided that Medusa should be my first venture into the sound of Trapeze. Expecting something a little funkier like Deep Purple Mk III, or a little more rock and roll, I am finding it hard to get into this album. My overall impression is that it is as if Free decided to mutate into early Judas Priest and this is the album that came out of the mutation process. With only three musicians - Hughes on bass and lead vocals, Mel Galley on guitar and vocals, and Dave Holland (later to play with Judas Priest!) on drums - the sound of the music is simple without lots of overdubs. What you get are the three instruments and two vocals, and there's nothing wrong with that. The problem for me is that some of the tracks are rather long (over six minutes) and don't get too exciting. Often the same chord progression is repeated for a little too long. The album still has its moments, like when the title track and "Jury" get going there's a definite heavy rock sound that resembles Priest's first album "Rocka Rolla". And my favourite "Makes You Wanna Cry" has some cool bass and guitar work. "Black Cloud" and "Your Love is Alright" really sound like material from Free's "Fire and Water" album. And on one track Hughes even sounds a little like Ozzy from his early Sabbath days.

The album is alright in my opinion but I can't get as excited as the reviewers above. Just a matter of opinion really. If you like a guitar rock album circa 1970 then this may appeal to you. If you are looking for something more energetic then this one may disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest of its time... and even now.......2007-04-18

For readers who did not grow up in the 80's but like this genre of music, this is the prototype ... or at least should have been , for darkwave/goth of the 80's and beyond. No other band has been able to match the songcrafting of this cd and the prior release. This was their greatest period (from 1985-1987). I was lucky to see them live once and the music still held up live. "Back Door" and "Louise" are the standouts, with the former song being almost orchestral in its layers of sound and arrangement. Dont let the eyeliner and pancake makeup fool you, this is true art.

5 out of 5 stars Xymox's greatest work.......2006-10-16

I bought this album on vinyl the day it came out in the fall of 1986 (along with PURITY by THE ESSENCE!) and from the moment I put it on, I was enchanted. I had their first album and NO HUMAN CAN DROWN was blasting through my cassette walkman every day but this album supassed everything else I had heard from any other band and still does! The 84-89 lineup of Xymox were very talented individuals. Ronny Moorings(the only origianl member left today and the singer/ guitarist), Pieter Nooten-keys, and Anke Wolbert-bass blended big strings, eerie choir, synths, guitar and drum machine in a way that cannot be matched. BTW, if you like the ambient side of Xymox, PLEASE check out the Pieter Nooten/Michael Brook album SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES. There are a few Xymox songs on it and it is very close in mood to Medusa, almost like an instrumental expansion and an excellent soundscape fore a rainy or dark and cold day. Back to Medusa.

1. Theme I-Very good instrumental opening wchich sets the mood for the rest of the album

2. Medusa-Oh man! Very cool dreamy bridge in the middle, very cool drum programming

3. Michelle-A bit on the dancy side and maybe a little psychedelic influence. Nice acousitc rhythn.

4. Theme II-Animal sounds, a woman yelling and orchestral strings?? Instrumental.

5. Louise-Fans agree, one of the best Xymox songs ever. Beautiful string intro, use of choir and acoustic guitar. Also, a very cool line "My heart use to beat, now it only weeps." Ahh Ronny...

6. Lorretine-The third and last instrumental. Very ambient. A little closer to some of Ronny's newer Xymox instrumentals.

7. Agonised by Love-The title says it all. Very grey with another very cool bridge with the drum machine.

8. Masquerade-Anke sings on this one. (My second fave! on Medusa) This song primarily consists of vocals, strings, drum machine and bass. The bridge and ending have some very beautiful synth worked into it.

9. After the Call-A Piter Nooten tune all the way plus he sings on it. Almost kind of New Agey with big strings and choir and timpany and snare. The SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES version is almost as cool

10. Back Door-A darwave classic. When I think of classic Xymox sound with all three members, this is one of the top ones. Cool guitar, excellent bass and amazing strings and choir again!! Very cool ending to an amazing timeless album

There were no singles for Medusa and for a teenage darksider, I needed more. Well, finally in 87, Medusa re-recorded Muccoviet Musquito which appeared on the Lonely Is An Eyesore. very much in the same mood as Medusa. Then in 88, they released the Blind Hearts 12" which is included on the newer versions of Medusa.

11. Blind Hearts [*]-I was very dissapointed with the female backup vocals on Blind Hearts but it's stilla cool tune.

12. Million Things [*]- I love A Million things and this version has a long cool string intro that isn't on the TWIST OF SHADOWS release. This song is probably the bridge between the two albums soundwise..

13. Scum [*]- Another reviewer said it was dancy. I guess it is. Not quite my sound of music.

There really is not another album like this out there. Twist of Shadows is a great album but Medusa jsut has 'that' sound. It's not only the mood but the musicianship is far above average. I have not heard anyone play bass like Anke, something to listen for and areal treat. If you like Medusa, please check out what The Cocteau Twins, X-Mal Deutschland, Dead Can Dance, what other 4AD labelmates were doing around that time, Tess Records (my band AUTUMN was on Tess for a short period with Xymox!) and Project Records.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2006-01-30

An excellent album, and a great novilty in 1986. its a great mix of very mellow, atmospheric tracks, and more upbeat electronica ones (what the sisters would like to have done but didn't). For me Michelle and Back Door are the best tracks. It is also just worth a listen for the slightly bizarre track Theme II with the woman screaming (or shrieking it's hard to describe), but completely in tune. Very strange.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Escape.......2005-09-02

I can honestly say that I have never heard more beautiful and sensual music. I feel like I am on another planet when I listen to Xymox, especially to their album 'Medusa'. You must at least take time to listen to any music samples! You'll be hooked fast!

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2004-10-19

For their second 4 AD album, Dutch band Clan of Xymox have taken the most effective and attractive elements
of their mosaic of sound (as witnessed at intervals on their debut long player) and produced a work which, at times, achieves the beauty and ambience of label mates like The Cocteau Twins or DCD.The playing here glistens and shimmers, especially on the opener 'Theme 1'. 'Michelle' on side one, is a good example of the new approach, powerful and melodic, harnessing the aggression and momentum that would once have pulled the song into a brutal climax.
Medusa is a vibrant soundscape that really saw Clan of Xymox reaching a larger and more appreciative audience.
Medusa is, quite simply, beautiful listening and of course a classic in many books and so it is in mine.
Louise is just a track I will never ever get tired of.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Medusa Live in Central Park.......2005-11-28

In a word...tremendous! A must have is you're a Annie Lennox fan.

4 out of 5 stars Medusa/Live in Central Park...better than original Medusa CD.......2002-06-15

I like Medusa/Live in Central Park because of Annie's choice of tracks and updated styles. All tracks are so different to the originals except for A Whiter Shade of Pale. This track is almost kept in its pristine manner. Whether the Harpsichord is real, or synthesized through a keyboard, it is a touching choice of instrument voice for the song. Speaking of instruments, Annie's vocal workouts on the inspirational Train in Vain are no less than amazing. Never before have I heard such a moving tune done by her.

While waiting for Medusa to be released, before I bought the original 1 disc version, I thought anything would be good from Annie. I wasn't wrong, but slightly disappointed because there was nothing new and original to her name. But, because of No more I love you's, I decided I just had to get the cd/s.

Now about the Live part.
Two things come to mind when writing this review. One is that when I bought the cd, I had already seen the concert from which the live selections (disc 2) come from. The concert was excellent, and the background sound and accoustics are and were pretty nice. I appreciate having at least the live version of Little Bird on cd, even if the original video never made it to Annie's Totally Diva DVD. I haven't been too fond of the live Eurythmics selections, but You've placed a chill in my heart is an exception too! Good improvisations. Annie knows exactly where and when to kick in with her emotional and moving song extensions in her live performances.

The interior photo is nice, with Annie in her plaid outfit. It's so like her! I like the duet version of Something so Right. Fits right in considering it was Paul Simon who originally wrote the song. Waiting in Vain is so pretty too, with all it's layering of vocals and soulful tones.

Compared to the original release of Medusa, Medusa/Live in Central Park is pretty with the pale blue cd booklet and back sleeve. It's much nicer than the way too simple original.
Most of the songs on Medusa I've never heard of. That's why when I noticed that the cd was entirely made up of cover tunes, it surprised me at just how modernized I was. I needed a little bit of the older great rock and pop classics in my head.

Where did Annie get the idea of putting letter type all over her face? Is it actually real, or is it put on using photoshop? I wonder. Whatever it is, it's a bit tacky and really not very pretty compared to the Diva album cover image. I found Annie too simple in the Medusa images. What my expectations were, were that she wear makeup like on Diva, but maybe less voluptuous.

Despite my small complaints, I am really happy to have found this marvelous 2 cd set. Shows that some songs are meant to be timeless. So are the songs on Medusa.

4 out of 5 stars Slumming, maybe, but still chilling..........2001-05-30

Annie Lennox may sing about a 'chill placed in her heart', but she's one of the few female vocalists still alive who can actually move me to tears, without exxageration.

"Medusa" probably sounded like a good idea on paper, but I tend to favour her compositions instead of listening to Annie do Karioke. "Waiting in Vain" and "No More 'I Love You's" sound decent; most of the covers do. But the real gem in this set is the live disc.

It's only LP length, but it's amazing to find that her voice is no less affecting in a live situation. A mix of acoustic Eurythmics covers, and hits from her first (and only) solo album, culminating in a killer version of "Why" that brings down the house.

Is it worth the extra cost? Absolutely.

      Album Description

The full-cast soundtrack of the hit musical for families. The Greek myth of Perseus set in the chaotic world of post-Civil War Louisiana. To save the Bayou and his Maman, Percy must journey into the dark heart of the swamp to find the snake-headed Medusa and defeat the evil Polydectes. A classic tale of supernatural adventures, romance and heroic deeds. Cajun music plus lots of alligators. C'est bien!

5 out of 5 stars Play it again, Dad.......2004-03-30

Our boys really enjoy listening to this CD and request it over and over for long car trips. They like the fact that it offers both a good story and songs they can sing along with (now that they've memorized them all). We like the way it teaches them a great classic Greek myth in a very accessible way. Definitely a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars An Original, exciting, entertaining telling of an old tale.......2003-02-23

This is an terrific CD of an incredible show! A musically inspired re-telling of the Greek myth of Perseus and theMedusa. Except it takes place in post Civil War South - La. This play is half spoken and half sung. The dialogue is clever and funny. David Maddox's score is GREAT - Disney should jump on this and Mr. Maddox ASAP, they need some good, original music to match their animation, else you get more Emperor's New Groove. My kids 7 and 3,love the music.

5 out of 5 stars A tuneful introduction to Greek mythology.......2002-05-22

Perseus Bayou is the tale of a young man coming of age in the Louisian Bayou country. The music is charfming and the stgaging of the original musical was superb. True family fare and a neat introduction to Greek mythology.

      5 out of 5 stars Perseus Bayou C'est Bien!.......2002-05-08

C'est Bien!!! This is a terrific CD of a wonderful show! Fun listening for the entire family. The story is a re-telling of the Greek myth of Perseus (the half-god who slew the snake-haired Medusa). However, this version has a twist - it takes place in post Civil War Louisiana. The story is easy to follow because the characters themselves narrate their thoughts and actions. This makes it very simple to stage the entire play in your mind as you listen along. The play is half spoken and half sung. The dialogue is engaging, clever and funny. The characters are colorful and endearing. The score by David Maddox is terrific! You will find yourself singing along after just a couple of spins. The music really captures the Cajun flavor of the region. The actors are excellent and have fine singing voices. My two girls (ages 5 and 2) simply love this CD. They sit in front of the stereo and don't move until the last note is played. Sometimes they replay their favorite songs 2 or 3 times before moving on to the next scene. My only complaint is that we can't go and see the actual show -- does anyone know if it is playing anywhere? I bought this CD because 2 years ago I had the opportunity of taking my family to see "Sing Down the Moon" - another show by Maddox and Surface - and we loved it (that CD is also excellent)! I highly recommend Perseus Bayou -- whether you have children or not.

5 out of 5 stars PERSEUS BAYOU is a "Classic " American Story.......2002-05-06

The Perseus story is one of the world's oldest hero stories and is most fun when given an exotic, creepy feel. PERSEUS BAYOU does exactly that by setting the adventures in a far-away swamp full of dangerous, half-human creatures. And "questing" stories are always the most exciting kind -- stories like Jason seeking the golden fleece or King Arthur searching for the holy grail. The main difference in PERSEUS BAYOU from the original Greek myth is that Andromeda, the girl Perseus rescues, has a bigger and more active part. And I loved the cajun music.

      Album Description

Featuring members of seminal Syracuse, New York bands The Path Of Resistance, Godbelow, and Another Victim, Unholy plays hardcore influenced metal with no regard for the latest trends and fashions. There is no singing, no blast beats, and no lyrics about love lost. This is modern metal/hardcore with plenty of acerbic vocals, meaty guitar riffs, and double bass from five men who have paid their dues.
