Illuminati [EP]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Featuring one new track and five remixes, Illuminati is one of three late 2002 EPs from Fatboy Slim (along with Camber Sands and The Pimp) that are based on material from his 2000 record, Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars. After a flood of imports, bootlegs, and singles that have already been released in Halfway's wake, Illuminati distinguishes itself on the strength of its single original track, "Illuminati." Featuring Bootsy Collins on vocals, the song peels paint off walls as efficiently as Slim's "Because We Can" from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack did last year. Filling out the record are some of the more innovative remix tracks that have been done from Halfway's material, including Timo Maas's take on "Star 69" and a nocturnal, trance-based mix of "Sunset" from Darren Emerson. If you're a Fatboy completist (and God help you if you are), or if you've been unable to track down these remixes, Illuminati offers an interesting extension of Halfway's vaguely mystical themes and playfully adventurous house music. --Matthew Cooke

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

5 out of 5 stars Demons makes this a must buy.......2004-02-09

It's a shame that you can only preview the first five tracks here at Amazon.com, because for me track 6, Demons (Stanton Warrior's Mix) is my favourite track on this album. The baseline is strong and the track is a good six minutes of joy. If you can enjoy Macy Gray's voice then this mix is wonderful. There is a similar mix of this remixed by the same person on the Chamber Sands EP, but this version is more thumping. I also enjoyed the Star 69 and Sunset remixes on this EP. Illuminati is also good. The other two tracks can be skipped.

4 out of 5 stars The first part in a neat little EP trilogy!.......2003-03-21

...this is disc one in a three-EP set released by that wonderful American techno label Astralwerks. It contains one b-side plus a slew of remixes from Slim's excellent third album "Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars".

The b-side, "Illuminati", is a track Fatboy Slim has been tweaking for years now. It first surfaced as the song "Michael Jackson", a b-side to his debut album, "Better Living Through Chemistry" before appearing as a bonus track on the US version of the album. It popped up again mixed into Slim's mix CD "On the Floor at the Boutique". It made its latest appearance in the film "Tomb Raider" and onto its soundtrack. This latest incarnation is probably the best. It's still catchy as ever and Bootsy Collins' vocals replace the Michael Jackson samples (i.e. "Micheal Jackson...look what you've done!")

As for the other remixes, I just really haven't got the hang of them. Timo Maas' mix of "Star 69" is pretty good and I just love the Darren Emerson mix of "Sunset (Bird of Prey)" which throws Jim Morrison's vocals through a vocoder, but the other remixes sound kinda bland.

Still, out of the three EPs, "Illuminati" is probably the best due to its stellar b-side and two excellent remixes.

all right...i'm gonna start out by saying that i'm a fatboy slim enthusiast, and won't stop until i have all his CDs pre-ordered, burned, or the like. even though it isn't fatboy, the new ideas that the remixers have taken to these songs is incredible. in fact, i'm listening to Illuminati right now! (it's a remix of Michael Jackson from his CD Better Living Through Chemistry.) and then came Timo Maas' mix of Star 69, (originally off of Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, but also used in Live on Brighton Beach.) all I could say was "wow" when i first heard this song. this will be the more complete review...just because i want it to be. i guess this is as complete as it'll be. i've just lost all interest...sorry. the CD IS good, get it. You'll agree!

Album Description

Phil Pirrone (owner of Longhair Illuminati and singer/guitarist/bassist of Casket Salesmen) had this to say about the release, "It's Nate and I doing exactly what we want to do without being compromised even 1%. It's progressive, it's powerful, it's emotional, it's ambient, it's interesting. And to me, it feels like what the world needs right now......Forgive me for saying this about my own music. But I feel like it's out of left field enough, and linear enough to catch everyone's ear, while intriguing people enough to know this is something new and refreshing. In my opinion, popular music right now is about as bad as Glam Rock was, and this record [Sleeping Giants] is, to me, a record that can help change that.

5 out of 5 stars A Promising Debut.......2007-04-03

I signed onto my Myspace page one day, and found yet another band requesting an add. Usually, I'm severely unimpressed by bands on Myspace, but I usually at least check out a song or two. When I went to the page of these so-called "Casket Salesmen", I was expecting some sort of unintelligible metal band, although their album cover looked pretty cool, so that was a plus. I started listening to the first song on the list, "I'll Buy That For a Dollar", and it instantly struck me as the type of music I haven't been hearing enough of lately. I scrolled down to see their influences, and just about every band on the list was also part of my own collection. Some influences are obvious; the driving riffs and subdued vocals are very reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age, the chunkier guitar riffs occasionally echo Tool, as do the tribal beats that pop up during interludes and segues. Sometimes you can even hear melodies that bring you back to the Beatles, such as the line in Anaheimlich Maneuver, "And know he's going to a better place".

Although the influences can easily be picked out, that's not saying that Casket Salesmen are retreading music from the past. To be honest, the album isn't loaded with innovation and new musical ideas, but the band (Phil Pirrone, bass and vocals, and Nate Lindeman, guitars) shows incredible talent and songwriting ability at their young ages. They are set to push the envelope of music with future releases, and even if they don't, the music they make will still be entertaining at the least.

The band is essentially two members, both ex-members of the screamo band A Static Lullaby. I haven't listened their previous band, but if you liked them and are thinking about checking out Casket Salesmen, don't expect any similarities. The reason Phil and Nate left their old band was because Phil believes that screamo is "one of the worst styles of music to come out since Rap-Rock." This band is obviously out to separate itself from the Static Lullaby name, which was also left with a core of two main members. Phil also implies that this music is fairly mellow by saying, "I will make heavy music again, but it will be nothing like ASL." So going into this album without any knowledge of A Static Lullaby is no different than knowing about them, although ASL fans may have a distaste for the less energetic sounds featured on "Sleeping Giants".

The album starts off with the same three songs as their Dr. Jesus EP released earlier in the year, with an ambient segue thrown in between the second and third song. The three songs have been re-recorded, and are among the best of the 10 on the album. Starting with "I'll Buy That For a Dollar", the band shows the direction of the album right away; driving riffs with a progressive edge, and a chorus catchy enough to sing along to by the end of your first listen. As the song fades into "Dr. Jesus", the melodies are less catchy, but the focus of the song is the guitar breakdown in the middle, which erupts into a wall of noise before pulling back into the song. "Dr. Jesus" leads into the tuneless "Shanghai Sally", a short break before the unexpected acoustic intro of "The Anaheimlich Maneuver". This song is my favorite song on the album, due to its catchy melody and the sheer volume of song styles that are crammed into its five minutes. As I said before, a line of the song evokes the melodies of The Beatles, and soon turns into a jazz break, complete with saxophone. Phil brings the song back to where it was with his powerful line, "Move on, there's no way of knowing, so move one", before Nate solos his way out of the rest of the song.

Another segue, "Forked Tongues" melds seamlessly with "Peace Monger", which is driven by its strong drum beat. The whole song pulses with a constant energy, which is carried through the ever-important chorus. At this point, however, you may start to feel like you've heard this before, since it sounds similar to the main three songs before it. The song itself is very good on its own, but it is probably the least compelling on the album. "Peace Monger" is followed by "Art Sandwich", which seems to be the most praised by critics. At seven minutes, it's the longest song on the CD, although it doesn't drag at all. The guitars are constantly shifting, the unusual chord shape moves up and down the neck almost serpentine in nature, leading to a very hypnotic introduction. The chorus is, as is expected, once again very powerful, with Phil singing, "It's soulless, we all crave blood sometimes, and we won't last without it." The song stops progressing at about five minutes in, and then just revels in itself for the last two, with punchy guitar fills and wordless vocals.

"Feeling Ten Feet Tall, Pt. 1" is a three minute instrumental, the guitars are more relaxing than on the rest of the album, the driving force behind the other songs doesn't seem to be behind this one. Although the other songs have the segues between them, they are still fairly haunting, and this song is really the only place to relax from the otherwise urgent mood of the CD. However, by the end of the song, the uncomfortable urgency creeps back in, and leads into the almost punky riffs in "Feeling Ten Feet Tall, Pt. 2". This is probably the most straight-up rock that the album ventures into, although the chorus steps back into Queens of the Stone Age territory. A very solid track.

The album ends with "Goodnight Jugdish", a slow, acoustic based burnout with almost middle-eastern musical touches. In a risky move, the song ends with a quote from the late comedian Bill Hicks, which will either enrage or impress the Tool fan who gives this a listen. I personally think it was an unnecessary decision, but it fits well with the mood of the song.

This is one album that I can listen to over and over, it's one of the few modern music releases that has really captured my attention. This is a band to look out for, but I'm afraid that their audience might be limited. I've seen just as many people scratch their heads at the sound as I've seen people embrace it, but to be safe, check their influences with your own tastes. If you don't like Queens of the Stone Age, then I doubt you'll like Casket Salesmen, and even fans of their influences may not enjoy it. But if you're one of the people who hears the first minute of "I'll Buy That For a Dollar" and knows that it's something you'd like, then you'll find a lot more to like within the rest of the album. At any rate, give them a chance, I'm glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best Grateful Dead tributes.......2006-07-18

A good tribute pays homage to the parent while simultaneously making a fresh interpretation. Along these lines, the "Blues for Allah Project" is one of the most accomplished and ambitious Grateful Dead tributes. This is a jazz version of the classic Grateful Dead album. Recorded at the famous Knitting Factory, this tribute effectively captured the energy and enthusiasm of the live show while delivering studio sound quality. Given the subject matter, the mood ranges from jubilation to dark mysticism. This recording has a surprising amount of integrity; this is no stoner effort, Joe Gallant assembled a serious, world class band. In the other reviews, the singing has been criticized. I found the singing excellent; the female vocalist's style is similar to Billie Holiday. When a listener is accustomed to rock singing, hearing the voice of somebody who's formally trained can initially be confounding. Furthermore, there is no lounge or fusion music here. While the singers may add a tad of croonerism, Joe's band plays straight jazz -with the exception of the twenty minute title track when the band goes avant-garde. If the listener doesn't appreciate real jazz, this disc will probably never get more than a single listen; such Deadheads should stick with the more accessible "Swingin' to the Dead." Those who have a place in their hearts for both jazz and the Dead will cherish the "Blues for Allah Project" as one of the best Grateful Dead tributes.

3 out of 5 stars Great musical moments wasted with those annoying singers!.......2003-04-07

Beautiful instrumental parts (my favorite- "Sage and Spirit") but like other JOE GALLANT "projects" the whole thing falls short with inferior singers. I know the GRATEFUL DEAD were no beauties in the singing department either, but the whiney, irritating singing really hurt the overall effect of these recordings (more damage done than any DEAD recording during their thirty year history). Example- "Blues For Allah" has some interesting musical passages with obviously talented artists UNTIL the singing unfortunately kills the mood. Worth a listen, but don't say I didn't warn you about the singers.

This CD is a must for any Grateful Dead fan who thinks they have it all

5 out of 5 stars Review by Jim Grandinetti.......1999-08-10

The Blues For Allah Project by Joe Gallant & Illuminati provides Deadheads an alternative style of music to hear one of the Dead's most intricate albums. A fusion of jazz & louge-music (for lack of a better genre), Gallant and his supporting cast perform live from New York City, and infuse the lyrics of Garcia & Hunter into the mystical music of Blues For Allah. The Help/Slip/Franklin that opens sets the tone for the entire project with an amazing vocal range, and excellent backing horns. A must-hear for Deadheads.

5 out of 5 stars ILLUMINATE THE FLYING INNER EYEBALL WITH LIGHTNING BOLTS ~~~~~ Vol. 2.......2007-01-12

(cover) Joe cites Francis Bacon from a 1625 essay: "The first creature of God in the works of the days was the light of the sense, the last was the light of the reason, and his Sabbath work ever since is the illumination of his spirit". On Joe's journey so far, he has had good fortune in connecting as a musician with the wonderful music of the Grateful Dead (and the Beatles represented here by She's So Heavy), and collaborating with a couple dozen other fine musicians on this live release, they tear it down free jazz style. A little reminiscent of Miles, Coltrane, Mahavishnu, Corea, Ray Charles and even Zappa (among others). Joe Gallant's loose arrangements allow all of the fine guest musicians room to flow and express their feeling toward the great melodies and motifs in these cool songs. Make note that this is a bit avante garde in style (crazy and cacophonous at times, but fun), so don't expect elevator jazz renditions - YOU WILL BE CHALLENGED with 71+ minutes of shifting approaches (meant to draw in the outer reaches of the originals, many are extended jams like live Dead in a way). Fun to practice to or space out with ... bang your bongos, get out the jazz bass, sax, vibes or crank up the strat (or whatever you have available), this is a fine journey of improv while it lasts (great musicianship throughout), I would have fun in this band. What a deal! I rushed to put this review up since it is selling at a very low price (and no one else has) - It is unique and energetic fun for Dead fans who also are into jazz (Jazz Is Dead is great too, although a little more fusion/guitar oriented, less big band).

This is volume two of a two volume set so they have a similar sound, the only difference being which set of Dead songs you want to spend time with (and Zeppeilin chaser or Beatles). They are both great and I will try to update these reviews later with more thoughts on the songs special qualities or oddities if it will help. Not quite 5 stars but close, bumped up for its special focus. These are kind of spooky and strange, listening alone might make the shadows in the wall jump. So, enjoy during the full moon in the darkness of deepest winter.

5 out of 5 stars Along with Priestess and Danko Jones, the best rawk from Canada you'll hear!.......2006-08-09

The first time I heard the Illuminati, was as the opening act for Andrew WK. Along with everyone else in the audience, I was blown away. It provided an opening dialogue between the rest of the crowd as we shook our heads in shock or tried to find out more about the band. Their music was a cross-breed of the Dixie Dregs, Black Sabbath, Jet, the White Stripes and Thin Lizzy. Again when I saw them a year later opening for Alice Cooper, they pulled the same magic trick and blew away the audience within the first two tracks. People in the process of buying beer rushed back in to watch the band.

Needless to say when I saw an album had been released I was curious to hear if their sonic prowess translated to a disc. Currently, I've thrown my Wolfmother cds off the changer and will keep the Illuminati on permanent rotation. A Powerful and bright production, the disc almost feels like it was recorded live. Like the early Vanhalen albums, there's a rough quality to each song that retains the incredible feeling of their stage show - just perfectly recorded.

Easily one of the best cds of this year, 2006. Standout favs are Goin' Down and On Borrowed Time and Jericho Mile. The incuded video sums up the band perfectly. File it under RAWK.

On its own, the Pastels' music has never amounted to anything that inspiring. Apart from the occasional wide-screen melody, the British indie band has remained reliably as safe--and bland--as milk. Here, however, it's a different story. With such enticing names as Stereolab, Mouse On Mars, and Tortoise's John McEntire behind the mixing board, the songs are transformed into dizzying and infectious pop gems. Standout moments arrive courtesy of My Bloody Valentine's makeover of "Cycle" and Cornelius's ambient reading of "Windy Hill." One of the most worthwhile and consistently excellent remix albums in recent memory. --Aidin Vaziri

Cycle, remixed by My Bloody Valentine, is one of the loveliest songs I've ever heard and abides forever dear to my heart. I both love and mourn that it is obscure, that this album full of shimmering sweet music goes largely unnoticed, even though it is an homage of deepest authenticity and affection. Rather than rate it 5 stars, I'd prefer to rate it Pearl of Great Price. Simply beautiful.

Although I bought this in January, I'd have to classify it as a summer album. I don't know to much about the Pastels. I do know that they're from Britain, and there are a lot of big names here from the indie world that make this cd look very enticing. Jim O'rourke, Stereolab, Cornelius, John McEntire, etc. I was let down just a bit after hearing the first couple tracks, and even after listening to the whole album, I still felt like it was missing something. I listened to it a few more times during the next week, and the songs slowly started to wrap their arms around me and whisper in my ears. Windy Hill, Leaving This Island, and The Viaduct (Bill Wells) really made me start to appreciate this album. Most of the songs, including the three aforementioned ones, are mellifluous, drifting along at their own pace. If you like breezy reading music that's not to heavy on the ears, but has enough substance to have you humming the tunes, try this.

The Pastels meet Stereolab meet Kruder and Dorfmeister. Just listening to the Remote Star Climb Remix by John Mc Entire is a trip of its own. It starts like a poor man DJ Kicks session, The multifaceted songs wander far from their Homeland, then hurry back home. Could this be the best Pastels product since "Up for a Bit" or "Suck on This", probably no says the purist, but let me rewind Song #2 (which can be found on Kid Loco DJ Kicks album) and Play Remote Stars Climb until we all fall asleep on the couch. California 2001, or California 1964 ?

4 out of 5 stars Varied, eclectic mix.......2000-11-19

Illuminati is a collection of remixes from the eclectic band the Pastels. The remixes are extremely varied from the soothing sounds of Ian Carmichael to the funky vibes of Stereolab. Featuring much of the band's best work, Illuminati will surely please all of the Pastels fans out there, but given the great artists who take the Pastels songs and re-shape them and turn them into cool trip-hop/lounge style tracks this is a great album for fans of electronic music. One note: the Kid Loco remix of the Viaduct (which is also remixed spectacularly by Ian Carmichael) is an instrumental mix, whereas on Kid Loco's brilliant "Jesus Life..." album the remix contains the vocals. For any fan of Viaduct you know that the lyrics and the enticing singing make it the beautiful song that it is. The Loco track is still creative and cool, but his other one is better. Good, soothing, laidback, music for any occasion.

This is it. This is the future of Heavy Metal. Agent Steel has now become one of the major contenders in Heavy Metal today, and with "Orders Of The Illuminati" there is no denying their staying power. Incredible!!!

I love this CD, it's a wonderful mixture of old-school Metal, and old school Thrash. Bands like Forbidden, and Iron Maiden quickly come to mind when listening to this masterpiece. It's incredible, and should be considered one of the best Metal releases in 2003. I'm very happy I took a chance on this band. They opened my ears, and brought me back to the great days of Metal when it ruled the music scene....

Don't hesitate on purchacing this. It's old school through and through. It's one of the best purchaces I've made in a long time.

If you don't like this album, you are NOT a metalhead, never will be, and doomed to live your life as a F#$% poser.

This is the truest metal album I've heared in a very long time. Agent Steel's last album was cool, but, in comparison to this album, it's second rate. 'forever black' is simply a f#$#'ing amazing tune, can we say CLASSIC? Track 4 'enslaved' is another standout, the intro is also classic Agent Steel along with Bruce Hall on vocals, dare I say better than the original? I DARE! 'ten fists of nations' is very good as well...hell, just buy it a ROCK!

Regardless of your feelings about the Grateful Dead, there is much to enjoy on this amusing, sprawling effort. Led by bassist Joe Gallant, Terrapin seeks to recreate the Dead's most "difficult" album, Terrapin Station. In Gallant's hands, however, Terrapin is rendered as a reeling big band adventure, complete with vocalists from basketballer Bill Walton to jazz diva Patricia Barber to former Zappa vocalist Ike Willis. Musically, the recording is a whirling affair, slipping from straight-up big band to soul to more experimental passages with grace and humor. --S. Duda

    Album Description

1999 outing, a must for Deadheads everywhere as it's a rearranging of the Grateful Dead's studio apex album from 1977, 'Terrapin Station'. An astounding reworking of the original record that blends jazz, jam rock, gospel noir, big band swagger, timeless vocals & searing electronics together, this is the second time Gallant has been commissioned by the Dead's Phil Lesh to rework one of their albums, having turned their 1975 outing 'Blues For Allah' into a contemporary masterpiece in 1996. 15 tracks.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "Terrapin" collapses in on itself.......2006-08-02

Joe Gallant's "Terrapin" is a jazz interpretation of the Grateful Dead's "Terrapin Station" (1977). This remake has two issues. First, the album is too processed and overly cluttered. "Terrapin" sounds like Gallant was too ambitious and wanted this project to be all things at once. For example, the techno sounding big beats and digital weirdness contribute nothing. Had Gallant stripped this down into something simpler, it would have been more compelling. Second, while the style of jazz here ranges from Swing to Dixieland, the primary vehicle is Avant-garde. Avant-garde never met the success of other jazz forms because it's intentionally inaccessible. Likewise, much of this music is 'rough on the ears' as the arrangements get lost in mazes of cacophony. Avant-garde aside, "Terrapin" features many musical passages of beauty. The swingin' 'Estimated Prophet' is a highlight along with some remarkable moments in the Terrapin Station Suite. Furthermore, Joe Gallant and his group get high points for integrity and effort. The exertion behind "Terrapin" must have been epic given the ambitious and extremely complex result. Indeed, this project employed a symphony orchestra, full brass section, rock band, assortment of ethnic instruments and a digital arsenal. If the listener is looking for a great jazz interpretation of the Dead or Gallant's best work, go with the "Blues for Allah Project." "Terrapin" has some highlights but it is so large that it ultimately collapses in on itself.

1 out of 5 stars this is not a good album.......2000-08-10

As great as Gallant's earlier Blues For Allah Project is, that's how horrible this album is. I am a deadhead and a long time jazz fan. So my objection is not that these tracks don't sound like the originals. My objection is that they are too self consciously arty and over produced. They are almost entirely unlistenable. The execptions are the tracks, like Estimated Prophet, on which Gallant does what he is great at, wonderful big band charts that let the beauty and verasatility of the music become a playground for an excellent group of players swing.

Too much strings, too much sampling, why is Bill Walton singing (rapping), regardless of how big a deadhead he is?

Illuminati is a great live band. skip this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning interpretations of Dead songs.......2000-07-05

This album is pretty mind-blowing in both its soul and eclecticism. There's touches of big band, jazz, blues, gospel, bluegrass, psychedelia, soul, modern classical....and it all, amazingly, hangs together. The soulfulness of the Dead's music is really brought out- check out the frenetic Dancin in the Streets and the Donna Godchaux song Sunrise, re-invented as a sort of cross-pollination of Peggy Lee and Ute Lemper! While I enjoy Jazz is Dead, this album is on another level entirely.

    3 out of 5 stars Non essential.......2000-06-23

First of all, this is a CD for Grateful Dead fans. If you're a fan of the Grateful Dead, you may absolutely love this CD. Alternately, you may vehemently hate it. I'm kinda dancing on the line between love and hate. Let me explain: This CD is Joe Gallant and some huge jazz orchestra performing all the songs from the dead's Terrapin Station album in vastly different styles than the original. Sometimes, it sounds great and energetic, with all the instruments getting their improvisory space as in "Dancin' in the Streets' and "Estimated Prophet'(The best moment of the CD is when the latter (sung by Ike Willis) rises from the ashes of the former in a cool segue.) Other times, the need to fill the John Zorn style of quick style shifts makes the actual "Suite", for instance, sound too trying-to-be-experimental , it just sounds stupid, especially with too much pseudo DJ blah blah blah. I listen to the first "side" a lot, but the actual Terrapin Suite is too much to listen to all the way through. On the whole, I give it a 3 for attempting to expand listeners' consciousnesses. If you want to find a really amazing experimental-popular hero who is also into the dead, look up Henry Kaiser.
