Product Description
Acknowledged as an innovator in the electronic music scene, MBM continues to stretch sonic boundaries and influence new generations of sound activists. Past production/remixing projects include Public Enemy, David Bowie, Orbital, Nine Inch Nails, David Byrne, Bush, Depeche Mode, and Tower Of Power. Supporting the group on this release are Blue Series alumni Craig Taborn on keyboards, Bad Plus skinsman Dave King, and Peter Gordon on flute. "Without MBM's groundbreaking amalgams of hip-hop and industrial dance music, modern dance music genres such as big beat and drum and bass wouldn't exist...one of Britain's most inventive practitioners of sampladelic funk"--Alternative Press.

This collection marks the fifth live Matthews collection in eight years. But while previous surveys have chronicled the band's nascent ambitions (Remember Two Things), initial fame (Live at Red Rocks), solo pretensions (Live at Luther College) and PBS-ready charms (Listener Supported), this double-disc set, recorded at the final show of their '98 tour, seems bent on formally crowning Matthews and company as arena-filling superstars--warts and all.

With a set listing culled largely from the pop-oriented Crash and more internationally experimental Before These Crowded Streets, the proceedings held some promise. But, like most arena bands before them, the DMB generally amps the nuances right out of the mix here. "The Last Stop" recalls where Led Zep's own world-music pretensions led them, while "Pantala Naga Pampa" skirts dangerously close to Kenny G. territory before finding its jazz-funk stride. Though they groove mightily and consistently throughout, the DMB's oft-criticized jam-band ethos often seems strangely burnished and studio-overdubbed to homogenous extremes here. And while legend Maceo Parker's sax further ignites the crowd-pleaser "What Would You Say," as guitarist and frequent Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds plays guest guitar god throughout, it's Matthews's own shamanic, oft-trancelike vocal excursions that barely keep this one from lapsing into DMB's McLive album. Try Budokan next time? --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not their best, but still a great live album.......2007-04-12

Live in Chicago is a great, tight live performance that displays how great DMB is live. The guests are fantastic; which includes Victor Wooten, Maceo Parker, and Tim Reynolds. I don't know why Amazon.com reviewer Jerry McCulley thinks that Pantala sounds anything close to Kenny G, it goes nowhere close. LeRoi Moore's soprano tone is much warmer and nicer than Kenny G's, that was an uncalled for comment.

Though this isn't as good a performance as say "The Gorge" or "Central Park", it still is a great one to have in your library. It is a great set and is well performed. The solo work done by Moore and Tinsley is fantastic as is the tight backings by Beauford and Lessard. Dave sings and plays great as usual. Though whenever I listen back to these older concerts, I do start to miss the great addition of Butch Taylor on keys, he certainly adds a nice new dimension and texture to the sound of the band. Still a great performance though, get it!

5 out of 5 stars Brillant live album, DMB at their height........2006-11-24

This album is so good, from beginning to start, it has that energy that is so lacking in today's DMB. This is why I would stand in line for tickets and anticipate each album release. This DMB exists no more, they have become so watered down and lifeless. If you have never listened to Dave, this is THE definitive album for them. Shortly after this album, the shows became stagnant and the albums released become more paint by numbers that the next. I remember seeing a show after this where Dave was doing solo's...unreal!

I just wish they could recapture this energy, get back with Lillywhite, and quit making elevator music.

Even if, they had to re-record Boyd Tinsley's Violin parts.

I love this live CD, it is only for hardcore fans though, with a lot of BTCS.

5 out of 5 stars Best live album..... maybe.......2005-09-08

This is the first album that I bought. Well, second. I bought Everyday and my younger brother bought live Chicago at the same time on the way back from Myrtle Beach (traveling back to Ohio). We listened to Everyday maybe once and listened to this album almost nonstop. This was the first time that I heard DMB besides Space Between (the song that got me into the band is now one of my least favorite songs).
Last Stop is really good on this album, great energy. Don't drink the water is great, but I still think that Folsom Field has the best version of it (Folsom Field also has the best version of All Along the Watchtower - the ending is absolutly stunning, you've gotta hear it!) The song that stands out is #41. This song is my favorite upbeat DMB song, it's so smooth, and Victor Wooten guest stars and rips some phat solos on the bass. If you play bass, buy this album! This version of #41 far surpases all other version, just read the reviews. It's hot! Chrah is great, too. It's one of the better versions. Tim Reynolds play on most, if not all of the cd. So, if you play electric guitar, buy this album. It's hot!
All Along the Watchtower is a very good version, one of the best, and Too Much has so much energy. This is also the only cd where you can find the Maker.
Conclusion: This cd highlights the first 3 releases. It has less of a pop sound and more of a jazzy, bluesy, and rock sound.
If you want a cd that has a great collection of songs that include the more poppy stuff (digging a ditch, space between, big eyed fish, when the world ends, I did it, if I had it all) as well as some of the most energetic upbeat stuff (Don't Drink, Warehous, AATW, etc.) - buy the Folsom Field cd (one of the best -maybe better the Chicago, it has more catchy songs, but the good songs of Chicago outshine most every other album).
If you want the most expansive collection minus two staples (#41 and Crash) get the Central Park Concert. 20 songs, hours of music, possibly the best version of Don't Drink the Water, and the only cd with Cortez the Killer, a bluesy song that is one of the best guitar solo songs of all time (wicked 11 minute song that does't get old - Warren Haynes stars as one of the best blues guitarists of all time). This cd is in my opinion the best place for a newcomer to start, and an essential album for anyone that considers themselves even a casual fan.

5 out of 5 stars complements Live at Red Rocks perfectly.......2005-04-18

and it is at least as good, sometimes even better. Both this one and Red Rocks have a completely different song list, which covers all of the band's best songs. If you are new to the band I strongly recommend you get Red Rocks first, and if you like it, get this one (believe me, they are both very much worth the price). While Red Rocks has a lot of songs from Under the Table and Dreaming, live in chicago has a lot from Crash. I can't believe so many people don't like this live set more; it completely rocks and is definitely not only for diehard fans. anyone can appreciate the extreme beauty in the music, especially "rapunzel" and "don't drink the water." I recommend this cd to anyone who wants to branch out in their music collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Bicentennial Military Music.......2007-03-28

The music from these three US Military Bands was originally released in 1977 as single Long Playing Records to celebrate the Nation's Bicentennial Celebration. It is missing the US ARMY BAND (which I regret) but otherwise the music is GREAT and the Bands are FIRST CLASS as you might expect. Except for the different services renderings of THE NATIONAL ANTHEM, no marches are duplicated. If you enjoy good foot tapping Martial Music...this 2-CD set is worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed listener.......2006-05-13

I have been listening to military band music for years, and am rarely disappointed. However, this compendium of music by the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marine bands and associated choral groups is not to my taste. Many of the arrangements are strange, and there is much too much vocal music when what I want to hear is the bands play. I would not have bought this album hhad I known beforehand what I know now.

5 out of 5 stars Classic US Service Band Recordings!.......2005-08-10

Its nice to see these old RCA recordings brought out on CD. These were originally released on LP back in the early 1960s to help finance the Kennedy Center in DC. They were popular recordings then. Unfortunatley only three out of the original four are offered here. Missing is the US Army Band which also recorded as part of this series. The sound qaulity has been left largely as it was, which wes pretty good for early 1960s. The only problem with the original recordings was that they tended to sound poor on the inner tracks of the LP. Fortunately that problem no longer exists on CD. Due to the format there tends to be some repeat material here. How many times do we have to hear the national anthem played by each band! Still, there are some good selections played when these bands were in their prime and larger than they are today. Its good to see recordings being re-issued on US service bands other than Altissimo! which tends to use just in-the-can material from band libraries. Here we have the original stuff played in a manner which is no longer done today. For those seeking vintage recordings of US service bands you can't go wrong here.

    Album Description

In the fall of 2002, the prestigious John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington, D.C.) opened an intimate venue, The KC Jazz Club, on the roof level of its facility. The Club celebrated its opening with two weekends of selected MAXJAZZ artists. The highly acclaimed pianist, Mulgrew Miller, and his trio featuring Derrick Hodge (b) and Rodney Green (d) were the featured performers on the Club's opening night, Thursday, September 5, 2002. MAXJAZZ is proud to present the second of two sets from that magical evening recorded by the late David Baker.

Volume Two begins with Miller's intro on his composition Song For Darnell, written for his son. It doesn't take long for the trio to pick up where they left off in the first set. The trio moves through the composition with great energy highlighted by the sparkle of Miller's playing and Hodge's impressive solo. Grew's Tune by Miller is a hard-swinging song that contains intricate runs by Miller squeezed in between some robust chords and phrases that have his signature stamp. Green's steady ride keeps the group moving forward with great drive. Miller's intro on his composition Farewell To Dogma slows the pace. He and Hodge then offer compelling solos on this intricate piece. The standard Old Folks by Hill and Robison showcases a wonderful intro by Miller on this exquisite version of the classic ballad. The evening comes to a close with Miller's composition Eleventh Hour. The first five minutes feature Miller playing a soulful blues solo before the trio joins in and burns to an exciting finish.

"Many guitarists dabble in slide guitar, but the number of modern masters can probably be counted on one hand- Roy Rogers is surely one of them..."- Guitar Player Magazine. This Roy Rogers' first ever live CD. Drawing on inspiration and material from a career that spans decades of performing, Roy Rogers is considered one of the world1s leading parishioners of modern slide guitar. This is a Bandlink Enhanced CD which enables you to access new and exclusive Roy Rogers content- instant tour dates, news alerts, bonus music tracks, live video footage and direct chats with the Roy. Nominated for 8 Grammy1s for his production and performing work in the recording industry, Rogers1 has been immersed in the blues and roots scene and performing professionally since the ripe age of 13. This longtime Northern California resident picked up a nomination for the prestigious W.C. Handy Award in the Best Instrumentalist Guitar category last year for his release "Slideways" which hit #3 on the Blues Billboard chart. In addition, Rogers' recently co-wrote the song 3G1Nawin on It1 (on 'Silver Lining') with Bonnie Raitt which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category. Rogers is currently being featured on OSierra Center Stage1, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company-sponsored television series which seeks to bring exposure to underexposed American Roots and World musicians. The CD includes special guest performances by pianist Phil Aaberg, harmonica wizard Norton Buffalo, vocalist Shana Morrison and fiddler Tom Rigney. "I am first and foremost a performer and I have been playing with these players for a long time. It's great to lay it down and not have to bother with the added textures of studio polish- but keep it as gritty and fresh as possible. I also wanted to capture the band at this moment in time and I think we did that," adds Rogers.

5 out of 5 stars Ripping Slide Guitar Blues.......2006-02-14

I've always been an admirer of Roy Rogers - and I love slide guitar blues - a few of the current best purveyors being Johnny Winter, Sonny Landreth, Rory Block, John Mooney, Dave Hole, and Robert Randolph (pedal steel). Previously, some of Rogers' studio work has been a bit sterile, and sometimes his vocals can be wearing. However, in this case, Roy Rogers has set the standard in the warm, live setting of the Sierra Nevada Brewery "Big Room". All of the interaction with his longtime partner, Norton Buffalo, and the Delta Rhythm Kings, and the audience getting into it, make for an exciting listen. His slide guitar really shimmers and shakes, and all of the cuts (except for one), which were previously recorded on his other albums, really benefit from this live presentation. The recording quality itself is excellent. If you see this album - Get It!

5 out of 5 stars This is where you should be.........2007-03-09

Jazz doesn't get better than this, and I don't say this lightly. Mulgrew Miller moves you through his piano like the smooth, strong force of an ocean wind, unmatched in his talent and ability. This is truly a virtuoso perfomance of a master pianist and a master jazz musician, and I would recommend this disk to anyone. Really is where it's at.

5 out of 5 stars Piano Trio Par Excellence.......2007-02-07

This group and their leader is setting the standard for the current crop of piano trios. Simply recorded and mastered to the hignest standards. Don't miss this album!
I would strongly suggest that the music being recorded and issued by MaxJazz, this small St. Louis based label, be explored by the lovers of jazz. The piano series and singer series are the greatest!

    5 out of 5 stars Intimista.......2007-01-10

Mulgrew Miller nos muestra una vez más su lado intimista en la ejecución en vivo. Un veterano joven que continúa abriendo espacios para la difusión del jazz. Sin duda alguna, Miller se muestra con gran pasión.

5 out of 5 stars Nadja and Anne-Marie in concert.......2006-07-31

I have been privileged to see Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg perform live four times, the last two in chamber music situations with her current piano partner, Anne-Marie McDermott. So this, for me, is a rare instance of my buying a recording as a souvenir of seeing someone fantastic in person, rather than the other way round. (Other examples, for me, were tenor Jon Vickers and conductor Klaus Tennstedt.)

For me, personally, Anne-Marie McDermott is one of the world's greatest pianists and certainly the greatest living woman pianist. She imbues all of her playing with both a respect for the musical text and a passion for the musical drama. She is incapable of playing a dull phrase or an uninteresting movement of anything; in fact, she would be my candidate for the next great complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle.

When paired with Nadja, their playing as a team transcends what each of them can do individually. To say that this program "strikes sparks" would be an understatement. Every note, every phrase of the larger works is filled with an inner tension and complete commitment to excellence not often encountered in today's homogenized "classics lite" world, and the Kreisler "fillip" is played with exactly the right amount of schmaltz and humor.

To say more would be redundant; these performances speak for themselves. Buy, and enjoy.

      5 out of 5 stars Nadja live.......2006-05-28

Any recording of Nadja is great, but a live recording of her, is extra special. I have seen her live six times within the last three years, and have traveled out of state, four of those six times.

Nadja has another live recording, also on her own private label, which is simply fantastic, with the great Tchaikovsky violin concerto, and a beautiful new composition, by Clarice Assad.

Live recording on highest acoustic level at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Features song material ranging from Brazil and Bill Evans to Carmen McRae and Peggy Lee. 5 out of 5 stars In Praise of the Keepers of the Tradition.......2006-06-20

There is a group of jazz singers which, on the one hand, is select, but on the other, is far too large. I'm thinking of singers such as Helen Merrill, Madeleine Eastman, Kitty Margolis, Nancy King, Rebecca Kilgore, Barbara Sfraga and Kendra Shank. Singers who stay in the jazz tradition. Singers who will not bend to the latest fad or trend. Singers who don't make a lot of money, and keep on plugging, anyway.

Roseanna Vitro is most certainly in this group. And that's what this album, recorded live at the Kennedy Center in September of 2005, is all about. This is an album, not of Great American Songbook standards (except for one, the set-opener, "Like Someone in Love"), but of songs written or made famous by such jazz persona as Betty Carter, Bill Evans, Carmen McRae and Peggy Lee.

Highlights: Ms. Vitro's scatting on "Please Do Something" and "Worried Over You", which sounds like Trane-like "inside and outside"; her cover of Donny Hathaway's "Tryin' Times", which sounds like an early-'70's jazz protest song reminiscent of Gil Scott-Heron or Eugene McDaniel; and her rendition of the very difficult-to-sing "Twelve Tone Tune."

Through it all, Ms. Vitro performs with an exuberance confined to the music itself. Yet, as she demonstrates with her husband, Paul Wickliffe's "Commitment", it's not always as easy as it sounds.

5 stars for anyone who can survive in this mode of music into the early 21st century with the elan and panache of Roseanna Vitro. RC

This daring disc recorded from a live Kennedy Center concert vividly captures one of the most musical and expressive voices in jazz today accompanied by an equally impressive trio. Opening with the swinging "Like Someone in Love", Vitro and her trio find humor in the tart "Please Do Something", lament in the bluesy "Tryin' Times", and find their samba in the energetic "Serrado". The real gems in this concert are the arrangements of two Bill Evans numbers with newly added vocals. Here Kenny Werner shines on piano as he effortlessly negotiates unusual and striking changes and rhythms, with both the bassist Dean Johnson and drummer Tim Horner providing tight back-up and solid support. Vitro also rises to the challenge with her vocal dexterity and sensitivity, as much an instrumentalist with her voice as the musicians in her trio. This disc delights on many levels, and for listeners new to Vitro, will be a welcome and much-loved find.

      4 out of 5 stars Ain't bad but............2004-08-22

Blessedly, I live in Oakland, walking distance from Yoshis and I get to attend way too many shows there. This was one show that I reallly looked forward to since I'm a huge Vinnie fan and also a Robben and the Blueline fan. I went two nights in a row and saw a total of four sets and enjoyed them all but there seems to be so much more potential for these three guys. Robben's tone is, as always, just perfect, Jimmy is solid and Vinnie is, well Vinnie but the band just never seems to climax. As one reviewer put it, the band just seems hemmed in. I kept waiting for Vinnie to tear it up but it just never happened. Maybe I'm just getting spoiled but I think Robben's other band was more entertaining. Still, this is good disc and I would recommend it to anyone who likes blues/fusion.

4 out of 5 stars Live is better zen studio.......2004-01-30

JING CHI LIVE AT YOSHI'S finds the original Jing-Chi trio in a live setting with a couple of guests. The guests definitely help.
Overall the band still delivers blues/rock with Jazz flavorings. Like the studio version the disc is mostly instrumental but there are 2 vocal tunes. If Blues/rock is your thing then you'll be loving this. Robben Ford is still the featured player on this disc; However, unlike the studio release, I was expecting it. Ford, once again, delivers with his blues/jazz/rock style. No shred, just pure feeling and his tone smokes. His style is still a blend of Hendrix/SRV/Johnson/Beck, which places him in esteemed company. He just might be the best living Blues/Rock guitarist out there. One of the many highlights for him is 'Stan Key'. Jimmy Haslip still is in the background but is solid. Vinnie is given more room to show his stuff and he delivers on songs like 'The Hong Kong Incident'. I have heard better Vinnie, but this should make fans happy.
The two guests are Marc Russo and Otmaro Ruiz. Russo is only on one song, 'Blues MD', but he adds a new sound to the mix and the band definitely sounds better when they add more people to the trio. This is especailly true for Otmaro Ruiz. Ruiz was a member of John Mclaughlin's "Heart of Things" band and he contributes to practically every song. His keyboard sound and style are a perfect fit. He doesn't overplay but adds to every song that he is heard on.
The disc has 8 songs on it and half of them are on the studio version. So, if you want new material then you've got it. Among the new songs are a Bob Dillon cover "Cold Irons bound" and a piece added by Ruiz, 'What Goes Around". I hope this means that he'll be on any future recordings. The studio songs are given more depth live because the trio stretches and Ruiz makes me wish that he was on the first disc. Even a vocal tune like "Going Nowhere" sounds good on this effort. If you liked the first disc then you'll like this one as well. I found the first disc to be mediocre but this one is very good. Jazz/Fusion is taken to new heights when it is performed live and JING CHI is a testament to this.

      3 out of 5 stars I wanted more..........2003-12-03

This band has so much potential! Although there are strong performances on this cd it just hints at what it might have been. Robin Ford is great throughout. He is tasteful and blistering when he needs to be. Vinnie is well, Vinnie but very reserved and kind of hemmed in. Haslip is as solid as they come and he and Vinnie are truly what a solid rythm section is about. Yet its not all there. I was at these shows and the tracks here are not the most exciting performances from those nights. I wanted more from this cd. Perhaps next time.

5 out of 5 stars Jing Chi Live!.......2003-05-02

Great live fusion with extended jams featuring a great power trio--guitarist extraordinaire Robben Ford, drummer's drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and Yellowjacket's bassist Jimmy Haslip--assisted ably by Otmaro Ruiz on keyboards and Marc Russo on sax. This disc contains 4 tracks from the studio-recorded version of Jing Chi (Going Nowhere, The Hong Kong Incident, Stan Key, and Crazy House), and 4 new tracks (That Road, What Goes Around, Cold Irons Bound, and Blues MD). Overall the cd has a little more bluesy and not quite as "hard" a feel to it as the studio version. As you'd expect with such a cast of characters, this is great stuff.

Past production/remixing projects include Public Enemy, David Bowie, Orbital, Nine Inch Nails, David Byrne, Bush, Depeche Mode, and Tower Of Power. Supporting the group on this release are Blue Series alumni Craig Taborn on keyboards, Bad Plus skinsman Dave King, and Peter Gordon on flute. 5 out of 5 stars MBM Keeps Moving The Music.......2006-04-07

This, like all MBM albums, pushes the lines into a new area. It is heavily Jazz influenced. If you do not like Jazz this album is probably not for you. Personally I find it great to put on while working. My personal favorites have to be the Want Ads One and Want Ads Two. Something intriguing about them. One thing I've noticed about being a MBM fan is every album is way different than the other. This is not Storm The Studio or Satyricon or Subliminal Sandwich. MBM keeps reinventing the wheel. Going into this album trying to compare it to the others does this album injustice.

      5 out of 5 stars I like MBM's new direction.......2006-01-12

It is a credit to Jack Dangers that he has been able to experiment with so many different styles over his career and still retain a trademark sound that is instantly identifiable as Meat Beat Manifesto, and this album is no different. Here he orchestrates an unexpected collision of jazzy flutes and rhythms with dubby basslines and a smattering of drum'n'bass. In lesser hands the mix would be a regrettable mess, but Dangers is able to make the combination sound effortless, natural, and thoroughly accessible (much more accessible than his recent RUOK and In Dub discs, IMHO.) Everything is grounded in that unmistakable MBM bass and the album flows remarkably smoothly and coherently from track 1 right through to the end, every track being a variation on the same general concept. It is the MBM album I always wished they would make, but never knew I wanted it.

      4 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise.......2005-07-03

Much as Techno and HipHop have played tugofwar with MBM, that touch of Jazz was always there, lounging on the centerflag.

And It has finally arrived to embrace us all.

"At the Center" is one of the finest 'beginning to end' albums I've heard in some time. Granted, my heart of hearts was holding out hope for another "Actual Sounds and Voices". Yet once we stop looking for the next 'asbestosleadasbestos' or 'acid again' we find a group of sincere artists emanating a constant mellow groove with no need to skip about.

We find something good for professional movers and wallflowers alike, ready to wink back at anyone willing to listen.

If word of the flute's constant presence made you apprehensive, you're not alone. It's hardly my favorite instrument, but after a few weeks of play I can't imagine this work without it. Of course, I'll always want more, and I know they could have worked in more variety, or at least given us more time before having to start it up again.

I know I'll keep it in for house parties, house cleanings, communities and chambers alike.

      Btw:

Don't worry about the live show being too mellow, they mix it up and crank it up with the best of them.

      5 out of 5 stars Wicked cool!.......2005-06-24

Wow. Let me say that I really dig this album, even though I've only heard the samples from meat beat's web site! I first saw MBM back in... '99 I think... opening for The Prodigy. Liked their stuff, but I guess I didn't pay it much attention being super-stoked to see the prodigy...

Fast forward to 2005. My musical tastes have changed somewhat. Seeing that MBM is coming to my home town next week, I decided to see if they had a recent release (which they do) and try and download some song samples (which I did).

I love it all! Any fan of Thievery Corporation or the Verve Remix albums will really love this MBM album as I do. What the other reviews say are true, jazzy in spots, but real cool beats. I love jazz though.

I think you will enjoy this!
