Once upon a time, a remix was an attempt by a producer to make a track more danceable--to pump up the bass, drop an infectious tambourine loop over the steady 4/4 rhythm, and add some echo to spark the crowd's buzz. But in the hands of the Intelligent Dance Music crowd--the style, pioneered by Warp Records, of applying dance-floor technologies to armchair music--the remix took on the in-joke mentality of a postmodern literary trickster. Tracks--not songs, tracks (if they started off as songs they inevitably got turned into tracks)--were pulled inside out, pushed through a filter that replaced beauty with noise and wrung it out to dry. The two-CD remix portion of Warp's 10th anniversary series takes this aesthetic as far as it can possibly go. This is contrariness squared. Oval applies his patented skipping-and-stripping CD methodology to Squarepusher's jittery drill and bass. Four Tet splices his disembodied reconstruction of a jazz rhythm section onto one of Aphex Twin's oddly effectless ambient works. Jim O'Rourke subjects one of Autechre's stop-start sonic mazes to his obsessively detail-oriented studio savvy. The result certainly has a hothouse quality to it, but hey, when you're not out on the dance floor, you've gotta work up a sweat somehow. --Jeff Salamon

5 out of 5 stars Certainly not for the Casual Listener but essential for fans.......2004-02-20

To Celebrate Warp Records 10 year anniversary, they issued 3 double disc albums, detailing they're discography through the 10 years of the label ("Classics", "Remixes, "Influences"). This issue (Remixes) takes existing Warp classics, and lets loose some Warp & other artists to rebuild the tracks. With the exception of a couple of tracks, virtually all the remixed tracks here are surprisingly downbeat, and wonderfully brilliant for it. "Plaid's" remix of "Autechre's - Vletrmx" is given the usual sparkling electronic melodic's we come to expect from Plaid. "Four Tet" smooth the edges off "Aphex Twin's - Untitled" track, turning it into sprawling instrumental greatness. "Stereolab's" reimaging "Boards of Canada's - Kid for today", with equally pleasing results. The only criticism that could be levelled at this release is that it's geared to Warp enthusiasts and requires extensive knowledge of the labels to get the best out of it. But as a definitive collection of remix work, this'll take some beating.

4 out of 5 stars what a tripp.......2001-06-11

This album is a wild ride, and I love every minute of it. First off lets start with the cover design. This is something I see as very crucial to a good and complete album. A good cover should in a sence bring a visual representation to what the music sounds like. In this case it does so to a T. This sounds like the cover. Hard high tech with manipulation, which makes the fammilar, alien. This is a collection of some of the Warp lebels greatest remixes. The music selection is great. It ranges from hardcore IDM, to flat out experimental, to funk..... Well anyway eclectic is cool and what Warp is all about. I reccomend this to anyone into the Warp label (which is obvious) But I also reccomend this to people that really enjoy experimental music and IDM becuase what you getting here are some heavly modulated and reconstucted songs and all are of the highest quality. The songs range from having a very mechanical sound to a very environemental texture and even having a sweet and almost innocent flavour! Despite the wild array of styles they all seem to sound like the cover looks which in my opinion is a true sign of a good album or collection.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Subtle Mix For All.......2000-07-29

I am a big fan of comp and re-mix albums and this one definetely falls into a mix of it's own. Matador Records and Warp have come together to make a fairly decent album. Mostly ambient and low down tracks but very nicely arranged for sure. There are some nice heart racing break beat tracks, but for the most part laid back and spaced out. I would definetely reccommend this to anybody that likes good beats mixed with space age rythym

4 out of 5 stars The BEST mixing the BEST.......2000-05-15

Out of the 3 box sets warp released, this is by far the one worth buying. Classics and Influences unfortunately showcased warp BEFORE they signed their good artists. But warp 10+3 doesn't dissapoint. Great remixes of great songs. Aphex, Autechre, Squarepusher, LFO, Plaid, Bogdan all remixing each others stuff. I especially like the remixes of aphex twin's and autechre's stuff, while the oval squarepusher mix fell way short. Yes the album may have some slumps, but it showcases the whole WARP crew in their full, and shows not only their capability to make the best music in the world, but the ability to adapt to others styles and make great mixes in the warp TRADITION. Favs are remix of SAWII #1, Plaid Veltmx, Bogdan mixing Autechre, among TONS of others. This isn't the best album ever, but it sure is a good buy for a two disc set. And bad vibes go out to one of the other reviewers who said warp is at its all time low. If you ask me, they are conforming perfectly with the times. The future holds some great releases.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing.... thing........2000-04-29

First, Warp is by far the greatest, most innovative record label in the world, and I applaude them for everything they have brought into the world of music. As for the 10th Anniversary collection, the Remixes CD set was my personal favorite. It put new spins on some of the greatest works out there and I never get bored of listening to it. If you love anything off of Warp, you need the entire 10th Anniversary collection. It's essential. You don't know what you're missing.

Give the Warp folks some credit for modesty: where most labels would see an anniversary box as an opportunity to advertise their uniqueness, this Sheffield, England-based company has devoted two CDs of their six-CD anniversary set to the people who first inspired them. Disc 1 makes clear that they don't forget the Motor City. This is the American disc, heavy on the Detroit sounds of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, with some tracks from the New York and Chicago scenes thrown in as well. Disc 2 is, by and large, the British response to this American ferment, starting with the "The Theme," by the Unique 3 (the first group Warp tried, and failed, to sign) and moving on to the more renowned 808 State and A Guy Called Gerald. This is a strong, historically informative set that moves from the lush, romantic sounds of the early Detroit school to the protobrutality of the first acid-house track (Phuture's "Acid Tracks") to the tribal sounds of the Brits. If there's one caveat, it's that there's nothing here that distinguishes this as a purely Warp set of influences. Influences is a standard selection of the tracks that rocked the English music scene circa 1989, and they've clearly had an effect on anyone who's made music with computers since. But there's nothing that hints at the strange twists and turns that have made the name "Warp" so apt for the label's output. --Jeff Salamon

Double CD Set of Early House and Techno

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Vital Document of the late 80's House / Techno genre...........2004-09-02

This album, being a three part essay celebrating 10 years of the warp label. Focusing squarely on the period in dance music, around the mid to late 80's. It mines the area of forward thinking producers that were experimenting with the limits of Acid-House & Techno. Compiling classics from that era that influenced the label ("Warp"), and it's own list of artists. Balancing the work between the prominent Chicago, Detroit & British artists, this gives a comprehensive guide to the fledging early Techno & house genre.

For anyone that was there the first time around, to hear these tracks....(and to be fair, this compilation is aimed squarely at you). There is an abundance of tracks that probably haven't been heard in 10 years or so. and going back and listening to all of these tracks with such a long gap, feels surprisingly memorable & deservedly nostalgic, and more surprising, with virtually every track sound as hypnotic and euphoric as you remember them. What also surprises is the very "Afro-Centric" rhythmic dance/Techno fusion sound, that seemingly inhabits a lot of the tracks here. Possibly setting the template for years later for artists such as "Ashley Beedle", and his seminal 1997 "Black Jazz Chronicles" albums, and it seems very likely that he took some of the early forms of tribal-disco rhythms exhibited here, and fleshed them out with more contemporary production, in comparison to some of the simplistic grooves here.

For example "Unique Three's - The Theme [Original Chill Mix]" is a track that is so simplistically produced, that it's infectiousness is made all the more surprising, by being one of those tracks that impresses by having an incredibly keen ear for a musical hook, and building a track around it. short low-budget keyboard chords and the clatter of sampled kick drums dominate here, with the influential compositions still sounding, if not innovative or new, still remarkably listenable after all these years. And it'll take a truly hardened individual to not have a nostalgic tear in their eye, which recalls the heady days of Acid-House raves, and harking back to a day, when Clubbing was a largely free-spirited affair.

"A Guy Called Gerald" should need no introdcution here, as his seminal "Voodoo Ray" , is likely to be the most instantly recognisable track here. And most likely the track people generally single out first, in regards to his work. Even some 12 years on it still as remarkable as it has always been, with the Echoed Drums and all superb female chanting, with the legendary "Voodoo Ray" sample sparadically shouted. It's a truly glorious moment, for a tremendous double Cd loaded with Classic Club/Dance tracks, but this track (for me) encapsulates the whole 80-90's rave/house scene. hedonistic, exuberant & vibrant, I'd don't usually like to single out particular tracks on albums (I prefer to focus on the album as a whole), but this would have to undoubtedly be the highlight for me.

"Plez" bring the acid house of "Can't Stop [Acid Rain Forest Mix]", a vaguely upbeat, tight & shouty house track, with a strong electronic feel. Like a lot of the tracks here, this was fantastically ahead of its time, and influenced many producers with its mix of early Electronica & Acid-House. And it's still a truly remarkable track now, and shows how some records truly do stand the test of time, whilst others evoke feelings of embarrassment.

If your looking for a important document into the history of Warp Records (which will appeal to some, as 'Warp Records' tends to be a collector driven label), or if indeed (like me) you were listening to these records the first time around on there release, this album is a essential purchase. Sure, there will be some that would agree that things have moved on since them, and they'd be right. Going back and hearing the production of these late 80's tracks sound 'Tinny', and a little rough around the edges in comparsion to the overly-produced tracks that we're used to hearing now.

But what it's important not to forget, is that this isn't really targeted for that weren't familiar with this first time around. As most will realise that back then....'Pro-Tools' and easily available music/software tools, weren't just an internet download away. And beneath the lack of audio fidelity, is a collection of imaginative producers making tracks that would go on to largely influence & shape the Detroit/Chicago scene some several years later. this is substantial on two levels. Firstly it's a tremendously well complied document of the early Techno/Acid/House scene on both sides of the Alantic. And secondly containing some of the most timeless (and hard to find) singles in dance music's relatively short history.

2 out of 5 stars 2 stars for the few good ones........2003-06-30

Many of the tracks here get quite old after repeated listens.

Even so-called classics such as "Theme", "No Way Back", "Let's Get Brutal" and the extremely irritating "Acid Trax" are worn out and tired. "Acid Trax" has long been cited as the first record to pervert the Roland TB-303 for an acid sound but it wasn't, it was the just the first house record to do so. And 12 minutes of an insipid, extremely repetitive, pounding beat and the same acid line get old after about 4 minutes or repeated listens. So do many of the other tracks, which I'm sure in their day were great, and may still sound great in a club, but very few people can stand most of these simplistic boring tracks at home.

Credit for 'influencing' current techno and such should go to the Brits and Germans who were doing far more interesting and progressive things with electronics earlier in the 1980's that sounded even closer to current techno than the tracks on this compilation. (See groups like Liasons Dangereuses, Croox, D.A.F., Heaven 17, Human League, Section 25 for the first real "techno records", not Model 500 or Rhythim Is Rhythim.)

That's not to say tracks like "Let Yourself Go", "In A Vision", and "I Can't Stop" aren't great, and fun to listen to, because they are, but much of this double disc set is simply a simple, surface, superficial, and stereoptypical "history lesson" in the most boring techno and house. Plus, most of these songs weren't really all that important in the evolution of machines being used to make music when it comes down to it.

Chicago and Detroit circa 1988 have nothing on Berlin or London circa 1982, and these tracks never did either.

Buy it to be cool and to appear in-the-know, but to those who truly are in-the-know, this compilation will for the most part bore, and feel played-out. But to your raver and club-kid friends, playing this in your car may make you seem intelligent to them. But really, save your money for something interesting.

5 out of 5 stars chicago, detroit, and beyond..........2003-01-18

what else can be said of a compilation containing the likes of larry heard, derrick may, and juan atkins? CLASSIC ... this is indeed techno in its purest form... "those of us who were there" know techno started in detroit). skip straight to "nude photo": giggling bleeps bouncing playfully around a tight-lipped 4/4 beat. so serious it's funny, or is it the other way around? candy for ears and feet.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to remember older techno/house.......2001-07-16

For those who are convinced, as so many are, that techno was invented in the mid-90s in Britain, this is the effective rebuttal. There is nothing "newer" here than 1990, and a lot of it dating back to 1986 in Detroit and Chicago. To put it another way: when some of these tracks were being released, I was 2 years old.

However, this is far from just a nostalgic look back at time gone by. Heck, I was 6-7 years old when the album's most recent tracks were being released, so I have no nostalgic feelings towards this album, and it's excellent. It wouldn't be mistaken for a newer compilation, but all the songs are uniformly excellent. Moreover, a lot of them still exhibit that "what the heck is that?" quality that marks good techno - still sounding like nothing else on the planet.

Whether you're a scene veteran who wants to recollect some classics, or a young'un who wants a history lesson of some "oldies but goodies", this is a great comp. I'd highly recommend picking it up.

5 out of 5 stars Great for any techno fan.......2000-10-12

When I first saw this CD, it was "Oh no, another House retrospective with the same old songs." But this is the best damn retro compilation I've ever heard. Hard to think that most of this music was recorded when the average "raver" was still in diapers. There's lots of stuff here that I'd never heard before, some truly classic stuff showing the whole range of dark -> happy acid tracks, stuff that most of us either no longer have on vinyl and would never manage to find again. Given the technological limitations of the time, a lot of these artists had to rely a lot more on raw groove and melody as opposed to studio trickery - some of this stuff might have been done only with an 808 and a 303, but you find yourself listening to it again... and again...

This cd is excellent. You can't listen to the samples for this cd because it's an import, but you can get a taste of this set by listening to their cuts on the other cds available on amazon. These guys really rock- and it will give your subs a run for their money- but be careful, you could hurt yourself with this one. No 90Hz sine waves here.

The music does make you want to move, and although there are some goofy refrains because of the translation factor from German, it make for a fun listening experience. As a tribute to the Australian tour, they do a version of AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" which is enjoyable, but hits very hard in the sub range... Enjoy.

What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, or prepared piano, and Livingston's pleasant speaking voice can be heard on more than one, but it's always his confident and skillful piano that's at center stage. Some are hysterical, like the piece by Ketzel Cotel, who turns out to be a cat belonging to a New York City composer, and some are quite serious and demanding. But best of all, if you don't like something, wait a minute, and some else will replace it!
A great album to have going in the background -- if you don't mind having your mind and your attention twisted around periodically -- or to listen to while you stare at nothing.

The British label Warp calls these tracks classics, and in one sense of the word it's tough for Americans to know if that's right: damn few of us remember sharing our first kiss while Forgemaster's "Track with No Name" blared on the car radio or dancing cheek too cheek with a prom date while the cover band played Tuff Little Unit's "Join the Future." But in another sense, there's no doubt these 18 tracks are timeless originals. The 7 to 10 years that have elapsed since each of them came out (an eon in the fast-changing world of techno) have done no damage to the music. Dated, yes--you wouldn't mistake these tunes for anything anyone's putting together in 1999 (not counting those cheeky nostalgia buffs who are trying to recreate the sound of '89)--but damaged, no. There's an innocence to these tunes, a naive belief that those thin drum timbres and unadorned breakbeats are enough to keep a dance-floor crowd happy. The blippy analog textures of LFO's "Probe" or Sweet Exorcist's "Testone" are pretty thin, too, and it's tough to imagine how trippy they must have sounded back in the day. But trippy they were: not a few of today's innovators were inspired by what they heard here, and the fact that our ears are now too jaded to make it out lends this collection an undeniable poignancy. Where most techno wants to transport you into the future, these tracks lull you back into a just-passed golden age. --Jeff Salamon

Well if you there then you would know that these tunes were only played in generally illegal underground house parties, before house music ventured into the world of the nightclub.
Imagine a disused house filled with speakers like totems blaring the sound of a world we had only dreamt of, where all was possible, black and white united under one roof.
No class system just people dancing. no judgements, just house.
    Bringing all together as one.
    Unheard of at that time.
Respect to the true spirit of House...

    5 out of 5 stars this is a steal..........2000-06-26

i bought this simply because it had "lfo" by lfo on it and like the other reviews said, good luck finding these tracks anywhere else. "aftermath" is probably my 2nd favorite on this cd. deep bass, simple song structure, spacy synths.... why cant somebody revive the blip?

    5 out of 5 stars A valuable CD.......2000-03-03

This anthology does two things nicely: first, puts on a single metallic plate a lot of good tracks that are still relevant to contemporary electronic music. And then, it makes available a few songs that are very hard to find, even on tape or in some digital format. Except for Nightmares on Wax, all the other musicians are unavailable this side of the ocean.

This CD is a good remainder of what electronic sounds used to be: simple and intense. Uncluttered by layers of beeps and zaps, each song is about repetition and rythm. Most of the 80s music has aged like lava lamps: a kitch piece of forniture that has been rescued because of its pathetic ugliness. Not so for this music. Its roots are in the detroit sound, but also in the early Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. This could be dance music, but it really dares to stretch its boundaries.

Warp 10+2 is also a good album, with a twist similar to this one (vintage techno). The third of the series is made of entirely original music, with dense, fast remixes. It's a good counterpoint to the first two albums.

5 out of 5 stars Full of hard-to-find near classics.......1999-12-25

Matador does an excellent job here of capturing a specific era of hypnotic, blippy, bleepy house. It took me back to the early west coast rave scene, when the "house is a feeling" motto thoroughly embraced cold, robotic textures and turned them into hot dancefloor anthems. The songs by LFO, Tricky Disco, Nightmares on Wax and Coco Steel make this album well worth its price.

    5 out of 5 stars A collectors dream.......1999-10-24

This is a most awesome compilation containing so many of the early techno classics that are hard to get on cd, 12", or any other format. All the tracks are so good it;s hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to it would be Testone and Clonk by Sweet Exorcist. Most of the tehcno here is old bleep house, some has some acidic textures, and soem too is just old house techno. If you like this, or like acid house and classic house more you shold check out Waro 10=2 Influences. I cna't stop listenin!

      5 out of 5 stars Hardcore Perfection.......2003-05-24

This CD is excellent with nearly every track being pure musical perfection. The second bonus CD is continuously mixed and shows how the Warp Brothers have truly mastered the hardcore mix from their first attempt found on Vol. 6 of the 'Tranzworld' mix series.

The only downside to this double CD is that while very similar, the first CD is missing three tracks from the original 'Warp Factor' CD. I actually had to buy both 'Warp 10' and 'Warp Factor' and I'm glad I did, two of the missing tracks are absolutely wonderful! In any case, the Warp Brothers are masters of hardcore and have rapidly become my favorite techno artist over Mauro Picotto and Voodoo & Serano.
