Things in the Game Done Changed

Fans of R&B crooner Dave Hollister will notice a new positivity on his third disc, Things in the Game Done Changed. Not that Hollister's previous releases were all darkness and thunder--the Chicago native is first and foremost a romantic. But now, even songs detailing the down side of romance, like "Tell Me Why" (about a tempestuous lover) and "Love Hate Relationship" (the obvious), are thematically rooted in love, or rather, in striving for the perfect love. Hollister finds the elusive emotion elsewhere. "For You" is a tribute to the one who has faithfully stood by him; "I'm Wrong" is an apology so heartfelt, someone should give Hollister flowers; and "Baby Do Those Things" is about, um, well, you get the picture. A small army of producers ensures the mid-tempo grooves are slick and styling, but it's Hollister's creamy vibrato--honed in church and from being a longtime backing singer--that cuts to the heart like a hot knife through butter. --Kim Hughes

2 out of 5 stars Hmmm...........2006-11-17

I bought this CD because I LOVE Baby Do Those Things, but nothing else stood out to me. I've loved his voice ever since 'Before I let you go',and I looked forward to hearing him solo. Now don't get me wrong, I love how he sounds on this album, but I think that if he switched up on his writing/production team he'd have a better album. I'm not saying that I want it to sound more mainstream, because I love when artists have an album that goes against the grain; but I wasn't a fan of Things in the Game...

Let me give you some insight on this man. Listen to this man and all that he has to say on his songs. All that love and pain, it is something because we all in one point of time will go through it with someone. I am truly feeling him and his music. "Things in the Game Done Changed" only shows us how he can make us feel when we listen to different tracks. Each song gives us a different taste of his life and what he is feeling. Listen to "My Everything" and how the love of his life was there by his side. Listen to "For You" and it gives you a different vibe, but a good feeling and it is different than "My Everything". Now after you listen to those two tracks and go to "Tonite" compare all three and you will have to say wow they are different, but they make you feel good, but he shows us this great feeling of his lady in three different ways. Listen to "What Should I Say" and "Tell Me Why", those two songs let you feel the pain, but they are good too. So when you listen to all of his tracks you will like each song. When I purchased this CD when it first came out I loved it then. His "Chicago 85" was great too along with his "Ghetto Hymns". This man is very talented and he too along with a host of others do not get the credit and people want to listen to that garbage of today. I like good music and appreciate the talent that some overlook because when you are physically more appealing it sales. I think that Dave Hollister is cute, just like Gerald LeVert and some others and those are the people I want singing to me in my car or in my crib. I miss Keith Sweat who knows that he can beg, but it sounds good (he is amazing in concert too!). I miss Keith Washington, Johnny Gill and all those people who can hold a note, a beat and make people say OH. I don't have Dave's last album because it didn't get enough publicity from ads, commercials and the industry. Like Carl Thomas's last album he did not get enough play either. Some folks just be hatin' too much for me and messing up what the music really is. Cop Dave's album and I hope that this review helps people feel this man's energy.

2 out of 5 stars SWITCH TO DECAF.......2005-07-09

This was o.k. Nothing more nothing less. This album was hard to review, beacuse no songs really stick out. I mean the guy is a mediocre artist with mediocre rhymes, laced over just above mediocre beats. I have heard better Sesame Street singalongs for yappy kids in the back seat of a mini van.
I mean what does the album have that sticks out? "Saturday To Saturday"? "Bloody Horseshoe"? Or the multi- faceted "Boo, We Ain't Forgot About You" None of the above, or none on the album.

Sorry. And please, all angry people who think that this is a bad review, remember, it's a REVIEW. I can say what I want.

5 out of 5 stars Addicted to Caffeine.......2004-09-27

Excellent from the first to last track, you can't possibly regret the purchase of Things in the Game Done Changed. I bought this CD 4 years ago, and it still is one of the best I ever heard. Each song deserves at least 4 stars. Caffeine is not too agressive and far from being one of those pop rap stars. If I would have to compare him to any other artists, Tupac would be the one I choose because they both share the same ability to rhyme without having to try too hard...smooth, balanced and unique.

NORE is on it, Ride With Me is amazing, the beats are great, the verses even better, and the artist rocks the rap game! I need more Caffeine!

5 out of 5 stars hott.......2004-09-11

this CD has hott beats, this guy is hardcore and hes much better than much of the rap today and i think that if he had an album deal he would ace this business. This guy has some tight songs and his music is off da hook

5 out of 5 stars MORE THAN WORDS CAN SAY.......2004-07-24

THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM I'VE HEARD IN A LONG TIME. IT'S TRUE AND REAL. NOT ONLY CAN I RELATE BUT I UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD AND EVERY EMOTION FELT ON THIS ALBUM. THIS IS TOTALLY WORTH THE BUY. IT'S PRICELESS
