5 out of 5 stars This album is the best I've ever heard.......2006-01-06

I was a fan of the band before I've bought Natural Selection, but since this album I can say that I'm one of the biggest fans of Fuel. Quarter and Won't Back Down are awesome rock songs, while Down Inside Of You, Falls On Me are so beautiful, when I listen to them I always think of that boy I loved so much, but unfortunately he isn't here with me.
But I can say taht their best song for me is still: Hemorrhage (In my hands).

4 out of 5 stars Good Effort.......2005-10-17

Fuel had the kind of sound that you could compare to those old grunge bands like the Smashing Pumpkins, Sound Garden or even Pearl Jam.. Brett Scallions just brings that "post-grunge" edge to the band.. However, I was pleased to find Fuel experimenting with their style on this album.. It was evident right from the radio single, "Fall On Me", a melodic hard rock song..

There is a much harder bass on this CD, and for anyone who heard "Won't Back Down" off the Daredevil Soundtrack, you can expect much of a similar sound.. No more "Shimmer", no more "Bad Day", just hard riffs and strong vocals..

Standout Songs:
"Falls On Me"
"Million Miles" (My personal favorite)
"Won't Back Down"
"Running Away"
"Most Of All"
"Getting Thru?"

Worth the money, I'd recommend it to anyone who loves hard rock or grunge

fuel have brought out three albums that have shocked me. Their rock, guitars and hard-hitting lyrics are all awesome in all three of these albums.Fuel are obviously one of the best bands today and will go on to prove it to the rest of the world.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fuel!.......2005-08-03

I have Something Like Human and think that Natural Selection is equally good, if not better. I really enjoy it. Fuel is the bomb. I got to hear them play live once. Very cool stuff. This album has about eight great songs on it. Definitely worth a purchase. If you like their style get Something Like Human also. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Straying from their previous sound..........2005-06-13

So, I thought this album was very different from their first two. Their first album (Sunburn) was very catchy and relied completely on the quality of the songs, not on the guitar effects or production of the album. Their second album (Something Like Human) took the best of their first album, the catchy hooks and heart-felt lyrics and expanded them with varied guitar effects and vocals. I believe that is their strongest album.

This album, Natural Selection, I think is right on the edge (close to falling off) of what made Fuel great. I went out and bought this CD the first day it came out. After the first listen through, I knew what was different. Carl Bell (lead guitarist & songwriter) I believe got too guitar-effects happy. He delves into much more complicated solos (which are great for rock fans, but not for melody) and Brett Scallions (vocalist) has a much mellower tone and sings in a lower key for many more songs than he ever did in the first two albums. The problem with this is that that isn't what made Fuel great. Brett's melodic high-pitched vocals and Carl's catchy tunes are what made this band great.

Having said that, I enjoy this album very much, just not to the same extent as Something Like Human. I think this album is much more cohesive than their past two albums, but the singles aren't as strong. Falls On Me I think was the wrong choice for their first single. They went the way of Staind and a few other bands trying to make Falls On Me semi-anthemic and a heavier ballad. Fuel's best slower songs have been their softer ones (Shimmer, Sunburn, Hemorrhage, Innocent). Their faster songs have been the heavier ones and have done that well. I think Quarter or Down Inside Of You should have been their first single, or perhaps Die Like This. I hope their next album is a mix of their first two, back to pure melodies and not relying on effects and production.

I think my favorite songs off this album are "Down Inside Of You", "Luck", "Running Away", and "Quarter". In conclusion, if you're a hardcore Fuel fan (as I am) then get this album. If you enjoyed their first two albums, this one is worth a try. If you only really enjoyed their singles (Shimmer, Hemorrhage, Innocent, etc.) then I think this CD is not for you, although it wouldn't hurt listening to it to make sure :)

2 out of 5 stars I can't believe it's been that long.......2006-10-05

While cleaning out the garage I come across some tapes that my sister had stored there from the 90's. Recognizing most of the names; Vanilla Ice, R.E.M., Wilson Phillips etc. etc. I then came across "Natural Selection." "What's this? I don't remember them." So I dust off and plug in an old RCA dual tape/record player to start playing side A. Not bad, so I continue to clean.
Now in the 90's I was more into birth of alternative music but perhaps for the sake of nostalgia an appreciation for the music manufactured and over played on the radio was forged. At the end of the day the garage was almost clean and the tapes quickly placed on eBay, but the songs remain stuck in my head.

2 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for..........2005-09-19

CD was scratched but guess I couldn't expect too much for under $1

4 out of 5 stars Still not bad.......2004-10-19

I'm surprised we didn't hear more of Natural Selection in the early 1990's. I was in high school when the CD came out and was drawn in by the single 'Do Anything'. 'Hearts don't think they feel' was also a single. After high school I studied piano, percussion, and composition in college and after all that, I still think this is a decent attempt at pop music and I've held onto it even though selling most of my other early 90's CD's. There is an obvious Prince influence throughought the album and the hit single had to compete with Prince's 'Cream' from the Diamonds & Pearls album. If 90's music is ever to become a 'genre' like 80's music has, I recommend Natural Selection as one of the most noteworthy, but overlooked, works of the early part of that decade. At the used prices it is worth hearing.

3 out of 5 stars Natual Selection.......2003-04-22

Not bad... Standout song of course is the hit single featuring Niki Harris (famous for being Madonna's backup singer & releasing 3 of her own albums:see nikiharris.com) but this cd lacks in some areas...with mostly filler music sounding like scraps from Prince, they still pull it off because scraps from Prince is still good music! Neither here nor there.

3 out of 5 stars Another controversial album!!.......2006-12-21

Sorry for my low rating, but this time - in comparison to the impact of their best Studio
album "Progressivity", I'm a bit perplexed about it!! Don't get me wrong, the product is good,
the music well mixed and performed in a remarkable way (epecially regarding of their
exploration concerning the sound of their synths), but the style is radically changed, as it
looks like a kind of psichedelic genre, which sounds a bit strange for my ears... apart from
this feature, sometimes their music is odd and very busy, but often resembling some
passages of another similar band - Brand X - in their most meditative moments, and for me
such important elements could be enough to make this album worth checking out at least!!
This is "alternative music" and "relaxed fusion jazz" in the same time, which is very interesting at
the end, so after burning this cd one more time I could give the product another half
star...make your own choice anyway!!

5 out of 5 stars LET'S GO TO OUTER SPACE.........................2006-05-22

I can't really say that this band has really brought much NEW to the table in comparing this cd to their past efforts, but this sound they have carved out is SO mind-boggling and unique unto itself, that it doesn't seem to bother me. Even with owning all their other cds, I still HAVE to have this one as well. They have found their zone and they are straight GOIN" FOR IT! I love this project so much because I love Brand X, but always wish I could here a fresh, crisp version of that stuff as far as modern production goes. Sometimes I almost feel trapped in that '70's sound when I listen to Brand X even though the work is amazing! If you are into mind-expanding music that is VERY BUSY and NATURALLY ODD and does not sound like everything you have ever heard, You will very likely love this album as I do. Though filed under Jazz, THIS is the type of stuff I would TRULY consider "Alternative" music, a label that seemed to just be loosely applied to any and all "rock" music in the early '90's???! This stuff actually is "alternative" to the music you typically here! "jazz fusion" works too, I guess...

There's no real problems with the album, and each song is distinct, so it's overall a good mixtape. However, no songs really stand out as incredible, none you find yourself singing along to in the car. If you want some unique and good rap to listen ot in the background, this is it, as it beats 90% other albums out there.

1 out of 5 stars Who stole my group???.......2003-09-24

After making myself listen to this CD a few times, some of the tracks have definitely grown on me. I am still overall disappointed in this release. My suggestion: Consider listening to Natural Selection before buying it. I loved the other two SFTG CD's and immediately purchased Natural Selection the day it was released. Upon listening to it, all I could think of was that maybe the SFTG label was printed on someone else's CD. The female vocals on most of the tracks were a complete surprise to the legion of SFTG fans. It would be a fine CD if I thought it was another group's release. As it stands, I still find it sad to feel like I have lost a group who's music I loved.

3 out of 5 stars I prefer the earlier instrumental focused material........2003-07-14

SFTG are awesome UK performers and you have to give them credit for always stretching, in terms of what they are doing musically, but to me this album is too vocal/pop oriented. It's probably partly because they wanted to reach a bigger audience but my taste lies with their more musically panoramic first two earlier releases, "Kin" and "Terra Firma." Both are brilliant and deserve to be added to your music collection!

5 out of 5 stars Atypical, but excellent nonetheless........2003-05-08

If you're a fan of Sounds from the Ground, take note that this sounds pretty much nothing like what they've done before. The biggest difference is the addition of the lazy-pop style vocals. At first listen, this sounds uninteresting and commonplace. Keep listening..... Yeah, that's it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, great CD !.......2003-05-04

Can you wear out a CD??? I have been playing this non-stop!!

I loved Kin and Terra Firma ( wore those out too)..but this one feels more polished. It's spare in a really lush way, and more trippy than the others. More female vocals then the last, some remind me of Porteshead, some sorta Cocteau Twins, I even felt a little Madonna in there in a soft Massive Attack kind of way (track # 3).

Even with all these resemblances...the music is still fresh and original. I like every track...how many Cd's can you say that about?

The lyrics are actually meaningful, even uplifting, with out being sappy in the slightest. This music makes you feel good!

      Very cool. It's great!

This CD is progressive, modern, trance, triphop, chill, groove and happening in a BIG WAY!

Unlike the tightly woven tale presented by "Alterno-Daze: Origin of the Species 2000 B.C. - ???", "Natural Selection - 90's" is sloppy and unrepresentitive of the era. While attempting to hone in more on the alternative scene that inspired the title halfway through the CD, the music gets unpleasant, boring, or irrelavant. Stick with the original.
