He's even put together soundtracks for films like Human Traffic, The Beach and 24 Hour Party People. Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold, two of the most famous DJs in the world and kings of big beat and house, respectively, are supremely showcased in this double-CD collection. The Essential Selection, Vol. 1 glorifies each mixmaster's equal, yet mutually exclusive talents in roof raising. The back-to-back discs are an enlightening example of the yin and yang of club music; Fatboy Slim's grounded, drier, giddier expressions of overlapping funk and disco juxtapose Oakenfold's spatial, entrancing continuum supplemented with buzzing, flatulent bass lines, and celestial synths. Both DJs are experts in flow, building beats seamlessly into climactic moments of frenzied, adrenaline-fueled euphoria, then swinging the vibe down again with the subtlety and patience of a free-falling feather. No doubt Fatboy Slim is known for his deliberate lack of subtlety stylistically, but when placed in this context, immediately compared to Oakenfold's ethereal grooves, it's evident that Stormin' Norman possesses copious finesse. Because of their stylistic polarity, like platinum and gold, these DJs shine with matched but multihued brilliance, and like soil and sun, are indispensable components of a diverse dance music ecology. --Beth Massa

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oakenfold's finest trance.......2006-04-24

The Oakenfold disc of this set is the epitome of trance.

Certainly Oakenfold's finest trance CD, with Tranceport in second place. The track transitions are seemless [like in Tranceport], so you can just put the CD in and go into, for lack of a better word, a trance. Soothing but with a lot of energy.

You can't call yourself a fan of trance and not hear this.

2 out of 5 stars Only half good..........2006-04-14

Fatboy just makes a lot of rhythmic noise! Very bad for your heart if you'd ask me. Oakenfield way more melodic. So definitely don't go for the new, but choose the cheaper used

5 out of 5 stars I'm sure you've heard it all...........2004-12-02

Yes yes you've heard it all about Oakenfold being a sell out and everything from A to Z.. and how most techno is all dated and there is always something wrong with mixes, and true to this also, but it's still good music, Fatboy's mix is really housey ( kindof in a Fast paced 1-2 min song Housy kinda way, not like a digweed house way ) Fatboy does tear it up though, his cd is really up beat and great for driving to, although it does leave the listener wanting more,, maybe something deeper.... oh yea there is an Oakenfold cd to.... I really didn't think to much of oakie's mix for a couple of years.. Now it's almost 2005 and i've heard tons of different mixes, and when i went back and heard his cd it really amazed me. the song selection stuck in my head and i couldn't forget the tune of the songs. it's progressive and has a different vibe than any of his other cds. Of course there are a few boring and too long songs on here, but when you listen all through, it really is worth owning. the last 4 songs on the cd are truly incredible 5/5 stars with nothing wrong there, and the first like 6 songs are probly 3-4/5 . sure you can call him what you want but this cd is good.

3 out of 5 stars This is Comical!!!.......2002-10-25

Boy, do I love this. Fatboy Slim tears it up on his CD, Oakenfold continues to put me to sleep!!! All I have to say is, if you have the extra money to drop on these CDs, buy it for Fatboy Slim's Disc. Truely one of his better...

4 out of 5 stars Two genres, two discs, two different moods.......2002-09-28

First of all, if you've never been exposed to electronic music, buy this double CD set. It is a rarity among dance mix compilations since it includes two popular but very different styles of dance mixed by two of the biggest DJs in the world. Almost all other dance mix sets contain one style exclusively, so this album is truly a 2-for-1 deal.
If you happen to be an electronica guru, this compilation may not whet your thirst for innovation. The first CD, Fatboy Slim's big beat mix, sounds dated, despite being fairly high energy. True, there are it's fine points, such as the few tracks in the middle of the mix that create an enjoyable climax, but as a whole the mix sounds old and worn. Unless you're a truly big Fatboy Slim fan, his mix probably will have you hitting the "skip" button on your CD player over and over again to escape the repetition of annoying beats.
As for the Oakenfold mix, it's the reason I gave the album 4 stars. Stand-alone, this CD is one of the best trance mixes to come out just before the trance genre began to flood with exhausted, overplayed, producer driven stagnation. Some critics have panned the Oakenfold mix claiming the song selection was second rate. I could not disagree more. Most of the songs are wonderful selections on their own right, utilizing pure emotion. The CD begins with a surrealistic soundbyte of a New York Thanksgiving day television weathercast, which quickly builds into an energetic hill with the likes of "The Spirit" and "Free". The 3 song climax is among the best I've ever heard, and one that can't be missed. Of note is Solarstone's "Seven Cities", which literally makes the listener feel as if he/she is truly on an emotional ride. The closing two songs on the mix are a wonderful cool-down, of note is "Viola" which is one of the best late night driving songs ever.
Overall I think it's a ...investment well worth the cost.

3 out of 5 stars Nice song selection but MONO only........2007-03-20

This is another example of neglect in regard to remastering. The people at Universal Music/Spectrum in the UK chose to include in this collection the MONO singles only. There are no stereo songs on this CD. If Motown or whomever is putting this stuff out, they should print the mono/stereo information on the cover so that the buyer can know what he/she is buying.

5 out of 5 stars Too Raw And Wild For Motown - Thank Goodness!.......2005-05-10

I saw The Contours when they appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand (not to date myself...) and couldn't believe them. They had a really wild stage act, swinging guitars at each other, rubberleg dancing, you name it. And with Do You Love Me, they followed a pattern long established in American music: black group records hit, gets a little money, white group(s) cover hit and make REAL money, black group tries again. In this case it was the Dave Clark Five, but The Meatles had done the same before (and after) them, see Twist And Shout as an example. The other chapter in this book is "black group tries to stay in the game with novelty/dance records until they find another hit" by the way.

This is a disc of PARTY MUSIC. If it weren't for the fact that they mention different dates it sounds like they could have laid all these tracks down in just a few sessions. "Dance" songs(Shake Sherry, Can You Do It, Can You Jerk Like Me, Move Mr. Man), love gone wrong songs (Baby Hit And Run, It's So Hard Being A Loser, Your Love Grows More Precious Every Day)and even a Smokey Robinson tune (Berry Gordy call somebody, guys?), Determination. All performed in a rollicking, almost garage-band style with harmonies, whoops, hollers and everything you need for a good listening time. Put it on and really listen to it - these guys weren't given much to work with at Motown but used what they had to full effect. Think of them as a second generation Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (talented but hard to pigeonhole) and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Original version of Do you love me.......2005-03-14

While so many other Motown stars of the sixties remain popular today, the Contours are largely forgotten. This is a pity but not really surprising as their biggest hit by far (Do you love me) became an even bigger hit when covered by others.

Originally featuring Billy Gordon (lead singer), Billy Hoggs, Joe Billingslea and Sylvester Potts, they were soon joined by Hubert Johnson, a cousin of Jackie Wilson. Jackie helped them to get a recording contract with Motown.

After a few unsuccessful singles, they hit big with Do you love me. It topped the R+B charts and made the top three in the American pop charts. In Britain, both the Dave Clark Five and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes covered the song. Brian's version topped the British charts (it was the high point of Brian's career, although his backing group eventually had greater success without him) while Dave's version topped the American pop charts.

Meanwhile, the Contours continued to record great music but they didn't quite fit in with Motown's image - they weren't as slick as the other acts. Nevertheless, they had some success in America with Shake Sherrie, Don't let her be your baby, Can you do it, Can you jerk like me, First I look at the purse, Just a little misunderstanding and It's so hard being a loser - this last track being their last new hit in 1967. They had just one (minor) British hit - Just a little misunderstanding, which briefly charted in 1970, four years after its original release in America.

During the sixties, the Contours underwent many line-up changes. Joe Stubbs (cousin of Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops) and Dennis Edwards (later of the Temptations) were the most notable names to join the group. The group continued for many years as a live act, performing on the oldies circuit at least until the nineties. Joe Billingslea and Sylvester Potts, two of the original members, appear to have stayed with the group through all the changes. Hubert Johnson committed suicide in 1981.

This compilation contains all their hits and several other great tracks. If Motown had had more faith in them, perhaps the Contours would have been more successful. Nevertheless, their music is well worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Tong.......2000-08-04

Pete Tong is probably the best House DJs out there. "Essential Selection Spring 1999" is exactly that--a collection of songs that were essential in Spring of 1999. Long a force in UK dance music, this BBC Radio 1 personality has been putting out "Essential Selections" since 1997, and they've sold almost a combined $1 million.

"E.S. 1999" captures the soul-house revival of 1999 perfectly through songs like "Flowerz," "Can't Get Enough," and (well, of course!) "Big Love." Opening with the erotic "History of Disco" (seriously, the most sonically sensual house tune since "French Kiss"), disc one is a real stormer. Disc two is more progressive, trancey, and features 1998-1999 classics like "3 Drives." If you like house...get this CD. Pete Tong has an ear for good tunes.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS SET.......2000-01-06

This cd set is one of the most stylistically diverse I have EVER seen. CD 1 is fantastic Euro dance music that'll make you wanna shake your arse. CD 2 will take you on a trance-hypnotic journey to rival Oaky and PVD. The flow is a perfect mesh of peaks and valleys that will have you doing the raver kick step for hours. CD 3 is a bonus cd by Graeme Park (hadn't heard of him) and he has a unique style of mixing Euro dance that is unlike anyone else I've heard.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Quality.......1999-12-10

The first CD has to be one of my all time favourites. All of the songs blend together perfectly with outstanding tracks being Big Love and (You got me) Burning up. Although the first CD is superior from a complete CD perspective the second CD although not having the same fluency still contains some great songs. Greece 2000 and Crazy simply jump out at you and scream for the stereo to be turned up. The addition of the bonus CD should sway any undecided minds and you should get out there and buy this NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Out and out, the best CD I've heard in a long time.......1999-10-27

I'm fifty years old and the cuts make my old bones shake. I love any thing put out by Pete Tong. He's simply the best.

5 out of 5 stars i've never danced so deeply!.......1999-10-15

put it this way, my roomates and I have listened to it so much in the last 4 months, that there is now a temporary moratorium on this cd! it rules!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Essential indeed!.......2000-09-05

Pete Tong, along with Paul Oakenfold and Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim), is among the top DJ's from the UK dance music scene.

This double CD "Essential Selection Spring 2000" is the latest in an ongoing series of Essential Selection recordings. This set is absolutely turntable-ready. It is subtitled "the soundtrack to your weekend", and this is quite appropriate. Just pop it in and hit the nearest dance floor. Considering it contains more than two and a half hours of music (about the length of a typical disc jockey's set), and includes just about every white-hot name in dance music, it is well worth the money.

The Chemical Brothers' "Music Response", Artful Dodger's "Woman Trouble", Moloko's "Time is Now" and "Pure Shores" by All Saint's are just a few of the gem/jams on Disc One. "Koochy", by Armand Van Helden (also included) opens with a loop of Gary Numan's "Cars") - but behind it, of course, is a standard big beat drum sample, which makes it infectiously danceable. Also, a version of the Bob Marley vs. Funkstar De Luxe smash hit "Rainbow Country" makes an appearance here.

Standout selections from Disc 2: "Don't Give Up" by Chicane; "Cry", System F; "Tell Me Why (the Riddle) ", Paul Van Dyk and Ondar's "Tuva Groove". This last one is interesting in that Tuva is a Siberian vocalist whose style (Tuvan Throat Music) is extremely unique and something from the past. Think the late Wolfman Jack or Tom Waits on a humming bender backed by a fierce dance feel.

The booklet has a photomontage of young partiers, looking beautiful primping, laughing and flirting, and probably feeling beautiful. The pictures are accompanied by a stream of consciousness narration of the evening's events. ("Bars, dancing, snogging, drinking, dropping. Get to club, huge queue's ...")

1 out of 5 stars What a hack!.......2000-08-29

Being a Pete Tong Hater is not always easy, but it always enjoyable. It is like people that hate the BackStreet Boys, or Brittany Spears. We hate them becasue of what they represent. They are the hacks that tap into the highest peaks of cultural popularity and try to make it their own. On 2000, Tong has struck again.

Like the old Ronco Greatest hits that we used to buy at Kmart when we were kids (remember all the best songs, no hidden gems) Tong does the exact same here, taking the life away from some great songs. His track listing is a Greatist Techno Hits (as he has always done) and peices them together for our listening enjoyment. To make matters even worse his mixing is not the least bit inspiring.

Such current house hits like (well every track) Koochy, Time is Now, Tell me Why are throw together just so Pete can make a quick buck. Do yourself a favor, just say no, and find some techno that will challenge you, but also move you...unless N'sync really are your hero's.

5 out of 5 stars Slammin' house.......2000-06-29

I find it hard to take disc one of this set off my cd player. I had never heard of this dj before and I must say I am impressed. It's a rave party in a box.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh Sounding Dance Collection.......2000-06-21

Pete Tong's new Essential 2000 collection is one of the best releases this year. The selections on this double CD colection consistantly surprise and delight it's listener. In fact, I'm finding it difficult to get through each side because I find mylelf endlessly repeating each selection. Pete Tong's interest seem as eclectic as Moby's as he samples 80's new wave sounds like the into to the song "Cars", or other samples by none other than Steely Dan, seamlessly mixing genre's which one would not expect to work together. And surprisingly, they not only work, but you find yourself jumping up and down and smiling from ear to ear his beats takes you on a house journey that doesn't stop until you are out of breath and wanting more. He sure knows how to pick a good tune and a good vocal because the voices from Barry White type smoothness to House Diva Ladies to Bob Marley, to More "Amber" type vocals follow each other but never seem to fight the mood or seem out of place. He gets Acid Jazzy, and Chicane like smoothness and not once do you feel like he is trying too hard to pack in too many different styles, just because he can. Yes he can, and he does, and it works and it works and it works again, just fine. And there is a consistancy that I find rare when it comes to DJ compilations. Often there is a feeling of stopping and starting, stopping and starting, which frankly, gets on my nerves. To consider what Tong has done in this collection, one would think that it would be close to impossible to mix such varied types of sounds without getting that sticatto movement, but what he does achieve is an endlessly listenable, breathlessly exciting, constantly entertaining collection of songs. Trust me on this. I own many, many of the collections made by world reknowned DJ's, and some of these are very good. My tastes are also quite eclectic and I appreciate what is good in all types of music. But when I find myself unable and unwilling to change discs from my player for as long as I have now with Tong's recent collection, that is a rare thing indeed. I believe that in the world of DJ collections, Pete Tong has created one of the great classics of our time. If you love house music, if you love dance music, if you love great vocals, dance diva's, beautiful sounds, catchy samples, if you like to be surprised each and every time you hear the same set of songs, you must pick up this collection. You will not be sorry. In fact, it will become the gift you bring to all your friends over the next year. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars NOT an "Essential Selection".......2001-06-23

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a genius, there is no doubt about that. But he had his share of low points, and Rick Glanvill did a good job of putting most of them on one CD. I bought this album because it had one of my favorite qawwalis on it, "Man Atkeya...". This is the highest point of the CD... BUT it has been cut short to 9 minutes, leaving out the last 5-6 orgasmic minutes.

The second track is why I felt Nusrat needed to stick to his traditional roots. By adding an annoying female chorus and an even more annoying drum machine, he has turned what could have been a wonderfully spiritual qawwali to a quasi-pop disaster.

"Sanson ki Mala..." is one of Nusrat's better experiments. Once you get past the awful acoustic guitar intro (sounds like 25 seconds from a 60s desi masala flick), it is a song beautiful enough to move a grown man to tears.

"Tumhein Dillagi Bhool Jaani Parre Gi" is one of Nusrat's better qawwalis, but for once I'm glad that it has been cut short on this CD. I always felt it lacked the character and driving force that normally makes a 15 minute qawwali interesting till the very end, in my opinion it could have been cut shorter than the 10 minutes on this album. However, it is much better than the NEXT 10 minutes on the album...

"Dam Dam Karo Fareed" is qawwali's answer to bubble-gum pop. This is 10 minutes of dragging praise that you'd be better off skipping.

"Ghunghat Chuk le Sajna" ... well, I'm indifferent to that song. It completely lacks the spiritual undertones typical in a qawwal's portrayal of romance. This is more of a folk song converted to qawwali format - bearable, depending on what mood you're in while listening to it.

It's odd that the one qawwali included in it's entirety is the slowest one of them all, and is not an actual qawwali at all. "Un ka Andaz-e-Karam" is actually a ghazal performed in qawwali-style. The words are poignant, as most Urdu ghazals are, but it would have been much better left in ghazal format. Of course, Nusrat's version is not bad at all... it just requires patient listening and an understanding of the language. Not something I would recommend to people looking to experience the euphoria normally induced by a true qawwali.

This selection does not capture the true essence of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's genius, and lacks many of his works that would truly make this an "Essential Selection".

5 out of 5 stars best of the bunch.......2001-06-20

this was the first NFAK album I ever got, and remains perhaps my favorite. the selections in this CD were put together with an attention to detail that shines through everywhere, making the act of compilation itself complimentary to NFAK's skills. track four remains my favorite nusrat song ever, probably. in terms of bringing together both traditional and polished(mastered) tracks, this remains one of the most interesting NFAK albums in release.

4 out of 5 stars Love of both worlds.......2000-07-26

This collection is yet another masterpiece from the legend who masterminded this form of music on the international scene. Whats best about this collection is that it gives a taste of all the flavours of the music in the armour of this genius artist. And every track gives the universal message of love, from divine love to human love. The first track (Man Atkiya bay-Purwa dai Naal) is a beauty. It is pure qawwali about a careless beloved. It brings out the true feelings of love even if you dont understand a word of the lyrics. The music is so powerful, it is an amazing experience. The next track (Sab Vird karo) reverts to the pop style of Khan (not his true forte) but yet is a beautiful glorification of divine love and the excellent lyrics are too good to be understood. Track 3 (Saanson ki Maala) is a beauty from the start till the end. If u start listening to it, u will never wish it to end. Again pure qawwali but in a different dialect. The music is mystifying. The lyrics are rich. It is immersed in feelings for the beloved. The next track (Tumhain dillagi) is traditional qawwali stuff & is a must listen. The crests & troughs are a wonderful experience. Again it is an invitation towards true love & the sufferings faced in that love. Track 5 (Dam Dam Karo Fareed) is a qawwali in praise of a Soofi saint and his devotion for truth. It is this form of music that qawwali has its actual roots in. The second last track (Ghunghat Chuk) is to be understood to be enjoyed. It is a pure Punjabi qawwali that invites the beloved to break away all the barriers in love. The last track (Un kay Andaz-e-karam) is a qawwali which is not only lyrically rich(which is always true) but the music is also equally rich. Describing the flip of heart on the beloved, it is a perfect ending to this collection. I am sure Nusrat would have loved listening to this collection himself as well!

    5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2000-07-06

The music on this album will transport you to another realm. I had never heard of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan before trying this album, but I was glad I got it! I found the best song was "Sab Vird Karo Allah Allah", but all of them were excellent and had a near-magical quality about them. I am not a Muslim, but in these beautiful Sufi tunes I can almost feel the beauty that the dervishes speak of. Personally I preferred the Urdu tunes (not suprisising considering that NFAK is a Pakistani), but all of the songs are wonderful.

    3 out of 5 stars Good tunes...mediocre compilation........2000-10-13

The other reviewer here is referring to the 1999 Essential Spring Collection...I think that one is better.

Tong comes up short here. The tunes are great ("Woman Trouble," "Koochy," "Must Be the Music"....) but it's like he's trying to cover too much ground. So many styles to capture...garage, trance, house...Following tradition, Disc One is house, and disc two is more trancey.

Pete Tong's always been more of a cultural mover/shaker than a DJ. The man's got skills, but his compilations don't always show it. Check out the 1999 Essential Spring Collection - it follows more of a groove with the soul-house-thing going on.

Tongey just played a show here in Seattle as well...will club culture ever catch on in America? Only time will tell.

5 out of 5 stars The History of Disco, part 2.......2000-07-12

Perhaps the most genious House mix ever released, Pete Tong mixes together three beautiful disks of music, beginning with the throbbing History of Disco, to the beautiful Flowerz/I'm Lonely, evolving into two more mellow and beautiful disks. If you're looking for an introduction to London Vocal House, start right here!
