After the Playboy Mansion

Dimitri from Paris has the touch, and everybody wants to feel it. Testimony can be found in the 200,000 copies of his debut Sacrebleu and the millions of 2001's A Night at the Playboy Mansion that have found their way out into the world. For his aptly titled follow-up, After the Playboy Mansion, Dimitri has divided the double CD into the yin and yang of his DJ approach, giving each disc its own name: "Uplifting" and "Laidback." But in DJ terms, things are not always as they seem. "Uplifting" and "Laidback" are both all over the map, and some tracks could easily fit onto either disc. Larry Levan's remix of Gwen Guthrie's "Peanut Butter" on "Laidback" could also work on "Uplifting," as could Danny Tenaglia's glowing remix of Grace Jones's "Feet Up." Most of "Uplifting" intimates disco and mixes in some breezy Brazilian house. French producer Llorca offers subtle samba/jazz on "Indigo Blues," then the groove changes to the Tower of Power-styled funk of "Best Friends Around," which segues into the '80s sound of De La Soul's "(It Ain't) All Good." Lil' Louis (of "French Kiss" fame) introduces "Laidback" with his mindless "Nyce and Slo," remixed by Tony Humphries. Combining old-school tunes with contemporary downtempo, Dimitri adds a shuffling track by Les Nubians, chilled breakbeat by Beautiful People, and a rumbling Latin noir thriller by Norwegians Ralf Myerz and the Jack Herron Band. Blaze closes "Laidback" with "Seasons of Love," a summery Afrobeat groover. --Ken Micallef

2 out of 5 stars not terrible music, but not the same class as .. at the mansion.......2005-10-07

not nearly as good as I was hoping. i'm not sure i would even define the music as part of the same genre as "night at the playboy mansion". much more drum and trance feel...

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2003-01-13

I coudn't find a better word to characterize this CD/Set. Amazing! It gives the best of House, non-comercial but with funky drums and a lot of vocals, for those who like it! Besides, Dimitri from Paris is one of the best DJ's in the world, so this CD goes in count of that!

Have fun listening!

3 out of 5 stars Too much chaff for complete satisfaction.......2002-06-29

...The Playboy Mansion made Dimitri on of my "Immediate Buy" artists and as soon as I saw that the "Return" was out, I bought it. It's been a disappointment because there are quite a lot of duff tracks on there. "Return..." contains some tracks that are old but don't sound fresh (So good so right, Nyce and Slow), some tracks that are on many other dance compilation cds (It's Yours, Never Enough) and some great new finds (Candidate for Love, Fran Mig Til Dig). It's worth buying for those new ones that I would never have found anywhere else.

2 out of 5 stars Listen before you buy!.......2002-05-05

I don't know if I could ever stress this more strongly for a DJ set. No matter what you read here, no matter if you think you're just like the people that love these discs, do yourself a favor and give this a listen first. Based on some opinions here I thought I'd be into it, instead I couldn't even sit through the length of either CD. That's just my tastes though...

5 out of 5 stars Return to the Mansion.......2002-04-17

This album picks up where 2000's A NIGHT AT THE PLAYBOY MANSION left off from. This generous offering of 2 cds filled with great songs, is divided up by the type of music. The first cd is a more down/mid tempo kind of groove, filled with some goodies such as "Nyce & Slo" by Lil Louis, "So Good, So Right" by Imagination, "Get It Up For Love" by Tata Vega, "Peanut Butter" by Gwen Guthrie, and my personal favorite of the disc, "Seasons of Love" by Blaze. The second disc is a collection of uptempo disco/funk songs, most honorably "Candidate for Love" by TS Monk, "That's The Way Love Is" by Ten City, "Changin" by Linda Clifford, and "Don't Leave Me This way" by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. This 25 song collection is sure to please any fans of house and disco. This is a generous offering and perfect for when you want to chill out or when you just want to get funky and dance. Dimitri From Paris does not disapoint on this collection. Give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars F.A.N.T.A.S.T.I.C.!.......2006-02-02

I've got the original music (including v2 and v3), the books (the best is Heitland's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Book; still in print);
the 22 VHS tapes issued in the early 1990's (a haphazard collection issued in no particular order of episodes that boasted famous guest stars). Can I please get the whole series on DVD? I have not seen Mother Fear toying with Illya (The Children's Day Affair) in over 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars At LAST the complete series ORIGINAL soundtrack, the wait is over!.......2005-07-12

Many of us have always thought The Man From UNCLE had the best music for a TV series ever, and this three double CD release confirms this. Wow! I'd be just happy with one CD, but having SIX (three double CDs packages) is absolutely out of this world, I mean, a lifetime wait come true.

Indeed, this is an unbelievable collection of three double CDs packages with the complete series soundtrack, and I mean the complete music, not a tune is missing.

And this is the ORIGINAL Man From Uncle music. Let me stress the point: this is the four years ORIGINAL soundtrack with the original recordings as they were heard throughout the series, not a no-name orchestra doing personal versions of the stuff. The audio transfer is very, very good, the music from late episodes is even in stereo.

Each individual CD carries over 70 minutes of music. All in all there you have the four TV seasons main titles and all, absolutely all of TMFU unforgetable music.

This is not a chronological release, meaning, all CDs have a mix of music from all four TV seasons. Volume 1 is heavier on early TV seasons stuff, fans of Jerry Goldsmith will love it. Those of us who prefer what Gerald Fried and later Richard Shores did with TMFU music, then volume 2 is mandatory. If you are a fan, you can't miss any of these six CDs. However if buying all three double packages is too much for you, you must go with Volume 2, no questions asked. Volume three is the weakest of them as it brings "suites" and a whole CD with "The Girl From Uncle" soundtrack, but you have a bonus "Open Channel D" beeper.

Each package is gorgeous, each with a glossy color booklet with extensive liner notes with details on how each tune was written to a specific TV series episode and how it was used onwards. You have bios on the composers, on how the recordings were made, even an overview on how many instruments were available in each of the years the music was recorded.

So, throw away your Hugo Montenegro Man From Uncle CD, this is the REAL thing.
