Album Description

The fun songs here are timeless classics that appeal to kids of all ages. By featuring childhood favorites such as "Old McDonald" and "The Muffin Man," both sung by Ella Fitzgerald, as well as more offbeat songs ("Mumbles" by Oscar Peterson featuring Clark Terry), Jazz for Kids makes for a great way to teach youngsters about jazz and swing music as well as some of its most legendary performers.

Little ones can sing along with Lionel Hampton's "Rag Mop" and share in the hand claps on "When the Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along" performed here by Carmen McRae. Their appetites will surely be fueled by Louis Prima's "Yes! We Have No Bananas" and "Potato Chips" from Slim Gaillard and His Baker's Dozen.

The kid-tested collection (children, nieces and nephews of Verve Records' staff helped make the final selections) also includes "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five, "Chicken Rhythm" also by Slim Gaillard, and Blossom Dearie's "Doop-Doo-De-Doop (A Doodlin' Song)."

Jazz for Kids finishes with an inspiring lesson and uplifting message for both youngsters and adults alike in the form of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World."

As Jazz for Kids makes little girls and boys dance, smile, giggle and ask for more, it is finally a children's album that their parents won't mind listening to again, and again, and again, and again...

5 out of 5 stars Jazz For Kids CD Rock!.......2007-07-23

My 10 month old starts bobbing her head whenever I just point to cd player. She can't wait for the Old MacDonald song to begin. I love this CD. You will too!

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun. My children like it. I like it........2007-06-27

I probably like it more than my children do, but they have enjoyed listening as we drive around.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-11

Real Jazz artist...real kids music...perfect pairings for the parent wanting to inspire a love of music and culture in their children! The Old McDonald rendition has since turned my 18 month old son onto listening to my other Jazz alblums. SO much better than the sugar-sweet kids music that drives parents crazy. I have no problem listening to this alblum with other adults in the car.

5 out of 5 stars I wish there were more albums like this one........2007-05-13

Jazzed up versions of songs you know and new funky songs you don't. We bought this CD for our young daughter (6 months at the time). My husband and I can't help singing the "Potato Chips" song whenver we eat them for lunch and the rest of the songs whenever. This is one of our favorite CDs for Kids. Highly recommend it to anyone who wants to introduce jazz to kids (or adults) because it is so fun. You can't help but toe-tap when you hear it.

5 out of 5 stars THE best kids CD I've ever heard........2007-05-03

This CD is fabulous for kids and parents alike.

Nomadic Southern evangelist Leon Followill may take soap suds to the mouths of the kinfolk wunderkinds--his three sons and a nephew--in Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon, whose second album spins enough cuss phrases and sexual allusions to leave Dolly Parton flushed. But the peculiar 20-something longhairs also fuel up on a filthy shotgun bass and relentless guitar riffs, complementing the delightfully discordant drawl of vocalist Caleb Followill to whittle a 35-minute grab bag of garage rock, English blues, sixties psychedelia, London Calling-ska, spaced-out country waltzes and front-porch, red-state revelry. Without revising its 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood, producer Ethan Johns (The Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) steers the band down a similar mischievous road, integrating poles-apart rhythms and techniques into an energized jumble of rotating tempos and lyrical bombshells. Putting faith in earth-shakers like "Velvet Snow" and "Pistol Of Fire," the wound down and pleasing "Milk" and its yodeling cousin "Day Old Blues," the Kings ultimately escape Preacher Leon's retribution, rendering him speechless--save for a simple "amen." --Scott Holter

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-10

This ablum is great all the way around from the tempo, lyrics and instramentals to the tone and depth of each successive track. I definitely reccomend this to anyone who is a fan of The Rolling Stones, White Stripes or The Black Keys.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbroken Smiles.......2007-06-21

This is, in my opinion, the best album put out by the Kings of Leon so far. It's right in the sweet spot between their early, gritty, garage rock days and their current, polished, art rock style. The songs have a strange poetic truth to them, going between stories of growing up, breaking up, incest, and even erectile disfunciton with grace and a unique, catchy sound.

If you're interested in the Kings of Leon, but don't know which album to pick, this is the one. I recommend all of their albums, but this is far and away their most inspired record to date.

5 out of 5 stars KOL's Best.......2007-05-12

This album didn't grab me right away, but I liked it more and more as I listened to it. Now I consider it one of the rare albums that really does deserve 5 stars. For the full 5 I think every song should be good, and several of them should be great and that's the case here. I'm not all that fond of KOL's 1st or 3rd albums, but all the planets aligned for this one and they do their own unique thing just right.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album from the best new rock band.......2007-04-19

I can't believe how many reviewers are trashing this band. Open your ears to GOOD music!

5 out of 5 stars The King ain't dead............2007-04-16

How good is this album????

I heard Youth and Young Manhood at my local coffee shop a few years ago and went out and bought it straight away. I liked it, but this is better...way better. I love listening to a band that perfectly mixes lyrics, music and attitude.

To the reviewers who gave this 1 star because Caleb's voice is crap....get a life....if you place that as one of your criteria go and listen to Mariah Carey....his vocals and the raw guitar sound are one of the best musical matches I have heard in a long time and more power to these guys for keeping it real...

Now the tracks....Slow Night So Long, Taper Jean Girl, Milk, King of the Rodeo are all fantasic songs but pound for pound "The Bucket" is their best song recorded to date. The rattling drum beat in the chorus makes this one of my fav tracks.

Really there are no weak songs, it is just one of those rare albums that hits the mark in so many ways. My only regret is that I missed seeing them when the toured last year especially considering they held an impromptu gig at my local.....Oh well next time around...

Amazon.com essential recording

Few young bands have embraced classic rock as fully as the Black Crowes. Their debut album features a bar-band stomp rooted in the back catalogs of the Rolling Stones, Free, the Faces, any number of early-'70s hard rockers. The secret of their success has been singer Chris Robinson's lanky rock-star poses matched with a voice as raw as whisky and as inviting as velvet. Add a healthy rhythm section accentuated by producer (and Rick Rubin protégé) George Drakoulias and you've got the dynamic shuffle of their hits ("Jealous Again" and the title track). While the band clearly likes to party, they're even more convincing as the Sunday-morning comedown of "She Talks to Angels." --Rob O'Connor

If you are a fan of blues based rock, this CD is for you. If you are learning about the BLACK CROWES for the first time, this CD is for you. 5 out of 5 stars THE BLACK CROWES $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER WITH THEIR DEBUT ALBUM........2007-02-06

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary debut album entitled "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of America's favorite sons. I give you one of Georgia's pride and joy's, THE BLACK CROWES. This legendary album was originally released in 1990 on Compact Disc on the Def American Recordings Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary debut album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE BLACK CROWES have always fascinated me. Like GUNS N' ROSES, THE BLACK CROWES seemed to be on the right track of emulating great legendary bands such as THE ROLLING STONES and AEROSMITH. For a while, it even seemed possible that a band like THE BLACK CROWES could even sound better than THE STONES and AEROSMITH. When brothers Chris Robinson on lead vocals and Rich Robinson on lead guitar met up and joined forces with Jeff Cease on rhythm guitar, Steve Gorman on drums and Johnny Colt on bass, THE BLACK CROWES were born and Rock n' Roll was in for a treat and a big surprise. THE BLACK CROWES frontman and lead singer Chris Robinson would attempt in becoming Rock's next big sex symbol on stage and give you dance moves that would rival and compare to that of Jagger and Tyler. As time went by, Robinson has successfully achieved and accomplished this difficult task. To add more, Robinson sings and belts his songs with such extreme power and emotion, that he gives the music an additional kick and climatic power that makes you feel like you are listening to real Rock n' Roll. THE BLACK CROWES style of music brings back the legendary Rock n' Roll music of its glorious past. THE CROWES love to jam to the Blues sound and the music of their southern rock roots. When THE BLACK CROWES recorded their debut album, it was history repeating itself only this time, the music was a more "in your face" type style and far more improved. In my opinion, "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" is a well made album.

I will list and briefly review all of the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Twice As Hard," (This is a very enjoyable song. This song has a mixture of the Blues and Southern Rock music. I love the way Rich and Jeff play their guitars in this one. They make their guitars scream and harmonize beautifully together like the way guitars were meant to sound like, breathtaking. Chris sings this song with such raw power and energy that he shakes this song to its very foundations and bares its roots.) (2.) "Jealous Again," (This is another well recorded Rocker that has some feel of life to it and a good beat that will give you tingles and goose bumps all over your body and make you want to dance.) (3.) "Sister Luck," (This is another well recorded slow Rocker. In my opinion, this song sounds alot like a ROLLING STONES song. Rich and Jeff do not play their guitars hard in the beginning, but they do make up for it by stepping it up and take the music into the next level or phase by daring to grind their guitars in your face with their blistering playing. This song sounds beautiful. Chris sings and belts this song out like a blues singer.) (4.) "Could I've Been So Blind," (This is another powerful Rocker that dares to Rock in your face. Rich and Jeff play guitars so well together that its like a perfect Rock n' Roll marriage made in heaven. Chris sings this Rocker with such power and emotion that he gives this Rocker alot of additional raw energy resulting in making this Rocker a whole lot better.) (5.) "Seeing Things," (This is a well recorded slow Rocker which shows the raw power and blistering lead vocals of Chris Robinson. Chris belts out this slow Rocker like he is singing the Blues. Chris actually makes you feel this slow Rocker along with him. Chris dares to bare the roots of this slow Rocker to its knees before your very eyes. This slow Rocker will leave you breathless and begging for more.) (6.) "Hard To handle," (Ah yes, this song track is quite simply, my most favorite Rocker on this whole album. This Rocker definitely kicks a*s. This is REAL Rock n' Roll the way it was meant to sound. You have to hear this one to believe it. Rich and Jeff let their guitars run loose for this Rocker. Chris sings and belts this Rocker the way a frontman is supposed to rule a Rocker.) (7.) "Thick n' Thin," (This is another well recorded Southern Rocker that kicks a*s. Rich and Jeff play their guitars like they are daring to push the limits of their playing. Chris sings this song like he is willing to help push Rich and Jeff beyond their limits.) (8.) "She Talks To Angels," (This is a beautiful acoustic turned slow Rocker. Rich and Jeff play their acoustic guitars like a warm summer breeze. Their acoustic sound is so magical and heavenly that it sounds and feels like a soft warm wind in the countryside where the hills and mountains echo its whining lifeforce.) (9.) "Struttin' Blues," (This is another well recorded Blues Rocker that kicks a*s. Chris sings this song with such raw power and emotion that he can make his blistering lead vocals ricochet and echo off of Rich's and Jeff's guitars. With this in mind, Rich and Jeff make their guitars whine and screech like there is no tomorrow.) (10.) "Stare It Cold" (Again, this is another well recorded Blues Rocker that kicks a*s. Rich and Jeff NEVER let up in this Blues Rocker. I bet that their guitars were tired and screaming for rest after this album was finished. Chris' microphone must be filled with enough electricity due to the raw energy that ran through it.) and (11.) "Unidentified song." (This acoustic Blues number clocks in about one minute and seven seconds. This acoustic Blues song sounds pretty good but it was probably an aftermath or epilogue following the completion of this dynamic album.) Overall, "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" is a well recorded album that kicks a*s.

I would like to highly recommend that everyone purchase this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of their own personal music collection. This legendary debut album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, THE BLACK CROWES have performed with their idols such as THE ROLLING STONES, AEROSMITH and JIMMY PAGE. However, THE BLACK CROWES have had their shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their whole career. THE BLACK CROWES broke up temporarily in the new millennium following the get together of JIMMY PAGE & THE BLACK CROWES. It appears that the Robinson brothers have been fighting and duking it out for many years like that of the Davies brothers of THE KINKS. However, The Robinson brothers would settle down. Chris Robinson's well publicized marriage and divorce to actress Kate Hudson would bring the Robinson brothers back together again and THE BLACK CROWES are in the process of releasing their first new studio album in five years. This new album should be out sometime in 2007. I really do hope that THE BLACK CROWES will stay together permanently this time. Rock n' Roll needs a great band like THE BLACK CROWES to remind Rock n' Roll of it glorious roots in order for Rock n' Roll to breathe and survive. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? So here's to you Chris, Rich, Jeff, Steve and Johnny. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-02-05

This is a rare time that I've heard a complete album since the days of the early Van Halen albums. Every track on here is GOOD.

What makes The Black Crowes so great to me is that they combine my three favorite genres of rock, soul, and some blues and they do it well...

You got southern rock songs like Twice As Hard, Sister Luck, Thick n Thin... You got a great balld in She Talks to Angels... Hard rockers in Stare It Cold and Jealous Again... And you got possibly the most catchy song the 90's and that is the cover of Hard to Handle.

If you're a rock, soul and blues fan I suggest picking this album up... It might not be from a classic time period, but it sure is a classic album from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Shake that money maker...........2006-01-15

The debut album by the Crowes, from 1990, has always been my favorite release by the Georgia rock band. They've had very good stuff since then, but to me, the first album just hasn't been topped.

It opens with "Twice as Hard", stating a message right from the beginning. This was a new band (then) that was here to show they knew how to rock and roll. In an age where hair bands hadn't died out yet, and grunge still had yet to hit the mainstream, the Crowes used their down to basics, Rolling Stones meet Skynyrd sound to hook fans everywhere of good, of fashioned blues rock.

The next song, "Jealous Again" was another hit, this one being the first single released. It is what set the tone and opened the way for the Crowes to build an instant fan base, that while isn't as strong today as it was in the early days, still remains.

Other hits are here, including "Hard to Handle", a revamped and kick ass version of the old Otis Redding song. Also found here is the ultimate ballad by the band, "She Talks To Angels". in an age where the power ballads were all over the airwaves, it was good to hear a true rock and roll force kick back and show the boys with makeup just how a blues tinged emotional rock and roll ballad is supposed to sound.

There isn't really a weak spot on the album, even once you get past the hits. "Sister Luck" has a bluesy, slow moving pulse....the kind that makes you wanna kick back and just savor your beer. "Struttin' Blues", "Could i Have Been So Blind", and "Seeing Things" all keep the album moving without letting up. "Thick and Thin" raises the decible level a little more, carrying on the pace set by "Hard to Handle", and right before they slow down into "She Talks to Angels". Finally, they top the disc off with "Stare it Cold", letting us all see that the Crowes weren't done yet.

All in all, if you like blues rock with an upbeat tone, or just good old time rock and roll, check this out. The Crowes use old formulas, but give them a fresh new flavor, and in the decade plus since the original release, have given rock fans a good alternative to the rest of the music scene.

This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves Chicken Little.......2007-04-05

My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great kids cd!!.......2007-03-24

My daughter absolutely loves this cd. I could not find it anywhere until i looked on amazon, so thank you amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the children, especially if they liked the movie!.......2007-03-14

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

5 out of 5 stars Her favorite gift..........2006-12-23

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

From Bob James and David Sanborn's Grammy-winning Double Vision to George Benson and Earl Klugh's Collaboration, Warner Bros. Records has released some of the greatest duo projects in smooth jazz. With Rick Braun and Boney James's Shake It Up, the label's tandem projects have hit a new plateau, pairing Braun's jazzy trumpet sensibilities with James's ultra-funk saxophone dynamics. The album title reflects the way the two bounce off and drive each other to artistic heights beyond either's typical solo work. The two horns dance over a shuffle beat and simmering blues keyboard textures on the opening track, "RSVP," first soaring in perfect unison, then breaking for back-and-forth conversation between James's lower smoky tone and Braun's higher-pitched crackling. Their musical chatter builds slowly, culminating in a powerful end chorus. Similarly celebratory are two versions (one vocal) of the jubilant horn hit "Grazin' in the Grass," which features the two swaying as one over jumpy retro guitar and keyboard parts, then blasting off into percussive improvisations. The disc's gentler moments are equally remarkable, notably the silky "More Than You Know" (in which Braun introduces a tender thought and waits for James to complete it) and a smoky, gently grooving cover of Horace Silver's "Song for My Father." --Jonathan Widran

The combo for Boney's Sax folowed up with Rick's Horn is truly wondefull. 1+1 = 2 Man! check it out

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yea.......2004-05-03

I heard this whole CD playin non-stop on some radio station in Dallas and just had to find it. I'm usually more into regular jazz as opposed to smooth jazz, but Rick Braun(trumpet) and Boney James(sax) working together like they do in this album is great. I especially enjoy the remakes of the Freind Of Distinction's Grazin in the grass. Cool, Cool stuff. May God bless us all.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best.......2004-02-20

Let me get right to it: this is one of the five greatest smooth jazz albums of all time. There, I said it. Why should you get this record?

First off, even though it is "smooth" or "contemporary jazz" and is played at a very high level, this music is surprisingly accessible. Simply great hooks, fattt beats, and a collaborative vibe that is infectious.

Moreover, the cover art and liner notes are tastefully done, as is the clever title.

Very much a genre benchmark.

5 out of 5 stars Boney James + RIck Braun = EXCELLENT.......2004-01-02

This is the best smooth jazz collaboration CD I have ever heard. On this disc you get Rick Braun, who himself is a great trumpet player along side Boney James. Boney himself is as smooth of a sax player as you can get. This 2000 realese is very well produced. The two often times take on a song together and never do a song alone. Although there are quite a few a slow songs, the tempo is always raised when a fast one comes on. Key tracks include "R.S.V.P.", "Shakin' It Up", and "Grand Central."

4 out of 5 stars Solid songs carry this not too extensive CD.......2006-10-14

Almost every Cars CD contained songs with infectuous hooks, simple but fabulous guitar work, and songs driven by powerful rhythm and catchy lyrics. "Shake It Up" is no exception. Not unlike other artists of their time, however, the Cars also weren't exempt from tossing in a muligan or two to fill out their albums and/or contract obligation. Despite that fact, the first 6 songs on this CD are strong enough to outweigh the remaining fluff. "Since You're Gone" is my favorite Cars song for so many reasons. One of the best heartbreak/love songs ever written is an unrelenting, powerful, impossible not to sing along with tune, even if you can't relate to the simple but brilliant lyrics penned by Ric Ocasek (his solo effort, "Emotion in Motion" in my opinion, would provide the next best Cars' related love song). "Shake It Up" was the other radio darling from this CD. But you can't emphasize those 2 simply for that fact. "Victim of Love" and "A Dream Away" are 2 of the most unheralded songs by the Cars, certainly by radio play standards. Though "A Dream Away" didn't escape the astute ears of the deep AOR stations who know great music when they hear it. Talk about your infectuous songs. I challenge anyone to listen to this song cranked on a quality sound system and try to sit still. "Victim of Love" too has typical Cars hooks and is another Ocasek sung empathetic dity to the love lorn that is also one of my favorite Cars songs. "Cruiser" and "I'm Not The One" round off the best six songs for other reasons and make this CD worth buying, particularly at the bargain prices it can be found at. The last three songs are throwaways, but that doesn't make any difference as far as how I rate this CD. My last edition of this CD, though not remastered had very good sound quality. It was bought several years after the intial release of this CD (I bought the album my first copy) so it may have benefited from a quality production by that time. The point being you needn't wait for remastering to enjoy a solid Cars CD.

4 out of 5 stars More New Wave than Rock.......2006-08-10

The first four Cars albums, all produced by Roy Thomas Baker and released in the space of four years, are a really solid body of work. Each one is not quite as good as the one that came before it, but this was a great band, so even this fourth one, "Shake It Up," is still a four-star album in my book. It's probably not the one to start with, but if you own a couple others and you're still curious about the Cars, give it a try.

"Shake It Up" is more commercial than the previous album, "Panorama," but at the same time, it has a warmer, more intimate sound, more along the lines of "Candy-O." The biggest difference is that "Shake It Up" is not as guitar-oriented as any previous Cars album (nor any of the later ones, for that matter). After delivering great solos on the first two songs, Elliot Easton only gets one more solo, on "Victim of Love," though he does play some really nice, raunchy fills at the end of "Cruiser." There is not a single solo on the entire second half of the album, as the keyboards carry the melodies and the guitar is relegated to a complementary role.

Still, this album sticks in my mind just as much as the first three. Ric Ocasek was still wrting good tunes, and even the weaker material toward the end is so cleverly arranged that it jumps right out of the speakers and into your head. "Think It Over" and "Maybe Baby" would've been dumb songs in the hands of lesser musicians, but the Cars make them come alive. "Maybe Baby" is the only song where David Robinson has a chance to cut loose on drums, and he attacks them with all the ferocity of a guy who has spent the entire album up till then playing with a drum machine.

There are two first-rate keyboard-driven slow songs on this album, "I'm Not the One" and "A Dream Away." "Since You're Gone" is one of the funniest, most fatalistic songs Ocasek ever wrote, and "Cruiser" is a great crunching rocker in the tradition of "Candy-0." Some people hate the title song, but I've always loved it.

Yes, the Cars were less of a "rock" band here, but being a "rock" band was never the point anyway. They always walked both sides of the line between rock and new wave. They just chose to be more of a new wave band with this album. And it worked out just fine, as far as I'm concerned.

4 out of 5 stars Check out the words.......2005-01-24

A long time ago, I bought this record, not the CD. The Cars were a group that I considered popular. I know some of the songs were on the radio and eventually I saw a great music video of "You Might Think" that seemed as witty as anything that was on TV that week, but I was mainly buying records that appealed to me in a weird way, and The Cars always seemed to be weird enough for me. By the time "Shake It Up" came out in 1981, I might have read that their experimental efforts had flopped and The Cars were sticking with a simple format that worked for them in the past; so the title "Shake It Up" was meant in a mild way. The words tended to seem hypothetical, particularly in the song "This Could Be Love" :

. . . more than you want me to

till i met you in the dark
i was chasing little sparks
when you think you're going to sink
comes someone you wouldn't think
is this the kill
is this the thrill
i'll wait until you say
this could be love

Which is followed by a song called "Think It Over." The poetry is magically evasive, totally eschewing concrete images, calling a song "Maybe Baby." The tragic element is destiny for the victim of love :

framed by the night touched by the glove
you're the victim victim of love.

There might be a greatest hits CD with a lot more Cars songs that radio listeners would recognize, but this collection of nine songs in 1981 was the set I could even buy a book of music for and try to play and sing in simple beginner fashion. The sounds on the record were never as simple as what was in the book, but the music worked well at that level. Actually learning these songs was much better than just hearing them on the radio, and we all ought to be grateful that Ric Ocasek came up with so many songs that fans of popular culture could enjoy, even if our understanding was a bit vague.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't this disc need RE-MASTERING?!?.......2004-08-15

I appreciate the content-based reviews, but some of us are long-time Cars fans who made their minds up about the songs many years ago. The question is, is this compact-disc everything it could be in terms of SOUND REPRODUCTION?

Regrettably not. The Cars albums were initially "dumped" to CD back in the early 90s, and it took a long time for the first three albums to be decently re-mastered. (Sadly, ART and LYRIC reproduction still has not been handled properly! Each new CD version looks exactly like the older, worse version!) As far as I can tell, Shake It Up and Heartbeat City have never been properly transferred. In other words -- they sound terrible.

Seems the problem is, Elektra's out of business. Certaintly, it's not a question of The Cars being able to sell records, since they ALWAYS DID, FROM DAY ONE. It's just not fair.

Somebody, please, obtain the rights and do The Cars right! Don't these pioneers of 80s sound quality deserve modern reproduction?

5 out of 5 stars Shake It Up.......2004-08-13

A little more light-hearted this time around, a year after the darker textures of Panorama. Shake It Up is a wonderful album that's sometimes forgotten, stuck between their "commercial disappointment album" and their "commercial smash album". It all starts out with one of the band's most memorable tunes, 'Since You're Gone', with Ric Ocasek's charming rhymes and Elliot Easton's faux E-Bow solo. A true classic. The title track is also a true classic, featuring a neo-doo-wop groove that remains the Cars' most danceable tune. 'I'm Not The One' is a simply incredible ballad, one of their best. It wasn't released as a single until 1986, as a remixed version from the Greatest Hits album. The original is better, with yet another wonderful synth solo by the band's secret weapon, Greg Hawkes. It sounds downright gothic. 'Victim Of Love' is a more light-hearted ditty. I love Hawkes' giddy synth touches on this one. 'Cruiser' is an awesome rocker, a perfect cruising song, naturally. I haven't owned this album for very long, and 'Cruiser' has already become one of my favorite Cars songs, along with the next song, 'A Dream Away'. This song is astounding; a great mood created by a driving synth line and synthesized drums, coupled with Ric's moody voice and lyrics. Probably my favorite song on the album. 'This Could Be Love' is another moody ballad, and a great one at that. Could've made a good single, too. 'Think It Over' has a bit different sound for the Cars. Despite the synths, it feels a little more rockabilly than usual. Ben Orr's vocal, as usual, make this song jump from good to great. "Everytime you run around, it makes me wanna pop". Also would've made a great single. 'Maybe Baby' is a driving Ric Ocasek rocker with some pretty slick percussion. And that's the end of this short but sweet Cars album, their one and only album cut at their own custom studio, Syncro Sound in Boston. I wonder whatever happened to that place? Anyway, Shake It Up remains one of the Cars' more light, enjoyable albums and I never tire of it.

Album Description

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists' latest album "Shake The Sheets" is a triumph on nearly every level. Produced by Chris Shaw (Dashboard Confessional, Bob Dylan, Public Enemy) in New York City during the spring of 2004, it is informed by almost every political and cultural conversation happening in our world today, but presents the conversation with a message of hope and humility.

Ted is a special artist whose most recent full length, 2003's Hearts Of Oak, dominated critics' lists for the year, garnering glowing features and positve reviews in SPIN (9 out of 10), Rolling Stone (3 Stars), Alternative Press (5 out of 5), The New Yorker and Entertainment Weekly as well as tremendous support from the punk press and online music sites. His nearly incessant touring over the last three years has won him legions of fans around the world that are hotly anticipating his newest album. At College Radio, "Hearts Of Oak" peaked at # 7 on CMJ Top 200; # 8 on CMJ Core and was #2 most added. Oak also enjoyed 7 weeks of impressive commercial specialty radio play including specialty chart peaks of #1 on the FMQB Magazine Chart, #3 on the R&R Magazine Chart. The video for "Where Have All The Rudeboys Gone?" got numerous plays on MTV2 and Fuse and Ted Leo hosted an episode of MTV2's Subterranean. Ted Leo And The Pharmacists even performed on a 2003 episode of Late Night With Conan O'Brien.

With a fantastic producer and great studio (James Iha's Stratosphere in Manhattan), Ted was finally able to achieve the cleanest, biggest sound he has ever had. "Shake The Sheets" is his greatest work to date and surely the album to push him through to even bigger success.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't listen to this album, your life is incomplete.......2007-05-14

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists round out anyone's music collection with catchy dancable tunes and angsty anthems. It's pop, rock, and soulful. "Me and Mia" and "Counting Down the Hours" are definitely the catchiest songs on this album--fast and singable it's great 'driving while you're angry' music.

4 out of 5 stars Sporadic insanity set to guitar.......2007-03-16

I was lucky enough to buy this album for $1 at Dr. Strange. It's one of the better albums I've ever bought; listenable, even a bit thought provoking. So far, I highly recommend the songs Me and Mia (which is a slew of eating disorder lyrics which sets itself to an outrageously infectious and upbeat tune) and Counting Down the Hours (which at the beginning reminds me of Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and then it floors it into drum raddled early Green Day sounds; quite fantastic). Better Dead Than Lead is bass and drum based, with cool guitar flourishes, and then when it hits the chorus, Ted goes falsetto before going back down. Bleeding Powers is great, a little more falsetto that kind of reminds me of Christmas carols along with the guitar and drum already mentioned. This album is definately worth it, even with a couple of more filler-ish songs.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic album.......2007-01-24

I don't know if it's just me, but do Ted Leo & the Pharmacists sound like the Police meets Frank Black? Well, even if I'm way off base, this is one infectious pop rock album. The band is TIGHT, and Leo's lyrics/voice are honest and soulful...some things sorely lacking in today's run-of-the-mill radio rock.
I can't really recommend this album enough. If you like the single Me and Mia (and who doesn't?) you will love the entire album. Catchy as all hell, wonderfully produced, and teeming with hooks, Shake the Sheets reminds me of Frank Black's masterpiece "Teenager of the Year." This may well do it one better, as album of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty great.......2006-04-21

So basically, what you heard is true. This is a great band and this is a great album. Exciting, upbeat, fun are three words I would use to describe their sound.

But it's really unique in the way that the issues they address in the songs aren't trifling, and even though it sounds like some mindless punk guitar riffing, it's really much deeper than that... What other band makes a punk song about self image and the mentality behind eating disorders?

Get this album, if only for the music, but listen to the lyrics if you ever so happen to have the time.

1 out of 5 stars Great music.......2005-10-08

Honestly, nothing cheers me up like some Ted Leo in the morning. "Counting Down The Hours" is a classic song, just classic.

Amazon.com's Best of 2000

Powered by producer Jim Dickinson's sons Luther and Cody, this trio brings the hard-driving Mississippi hill-country style of blues-boogie to the jam-band generation. What's amazing is how they are able to stay true to the spirit of the blues perfected by idols (and neighbors) such as Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside while advancing the style in fresh and thrilling ways. --Marc Greilsamer

Amazon.com

What is the sound of one blues exploding? It is the North Mississippi Allstars, one of the most exciting bands to emerge from the South in a long, long time. This is Black Flag if its members were Fred McDowell, R. L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Otha Turner. Guest stars would include Duane Allman, Captain Beefheart, and Howlin' Wolf. Luther Dickinson plays guitar like an octogenarian bluesman on his first amphetamine rush; his brother Cody drums hard, like a Keith Moon born and bred in Mississippi (their dad is famed producer/musician Jim Dickinson). Linking the two is Chris Chew, who spits out bass fat and heavy. Their music rockets from the rural backwoods to the laser CD player like a jack on a jenny. Songs that evolved through the last century are given new life, ensuring their relevance to another generation. World Boogie is upon us. --Robert Gordon

If you ever have a chance to see the North Missippi AllStars live, you won't regret it. They have a style unlike any. The cd does not do their talent justice. It's something that must be seen.

3 out of 5 stars sorry. It is not the real thing........2005-12-02

It is obvious these guys love the blues and are committed to playing it. But it is not enough. All one has to do is listen to Mcdowell's Shake'em on Down after listening to the version in this album. Or listen to Otha Turner's great music... Playing fast and loud is not a substitute to the real emotional and rhythmic depth that existed in the original recordings. It is a nice album to play in a party - but for me, at least - it is not real blues. Real blues "is a feeling" like Otis span said. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Upgraded blues..........2004-12-14

This is a hot album. It's blues for today. I would describe their sound as a blend of Led Zep, Allmans, ZZ Top, Little Feat, Howling Wolf molded with any of today's jam bands. Everytime I would think I had their sound figured out they would throw me a curveball. Very cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing dance disc set.......2007-05-02

I don't usually buy DJ or dance mixes, but after hearing much of Freemasons stuff online and in the clubs, I thought I'd give this one a try. I tried looking at downloading it from iTunes, but they don't have the whole album and the mixes I wanted. Suffice it to say, I've been listening to these discs for the last 4 days straight, over and over, and the tracks, while addictive at first, just get better and better. If you are a fan of dance music, then this is the album for you!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Import Dance CD!.......2007-04-28

This is bar none one of the best dance compilations I have ever heard. As another reviewer put it so succinctly, it's the "bomb" and never lets up on the Hi-NRG until the last cut on the second cd which is a slowed down version of Siedah Garrett's "Rain Down Love" (After Hours Mix).

Freemasons have an incredible talent in melding some of the best of the 70's, 80's and 90's dance sounds with new r & b and pop songs that create mixes which sound totally fresh and contemporary. For the most part the vocals are very strong and the result is a blend that's very danceable, but still melodic which makes this an enjoyable listening experience as well. The flow and transition between cuts is seamless and I believe this is due to the fact that all of the songs have either been produced or remixed by the same production team, so the "vision" is consistent throughout.

The extra dollars for this import are well worth it as you will find some of the biggest hits from the dance floor over the last couple of years all in one place here including Beyonce's "Deja Vu", Luther Vandross' "Shine" and Freemason's "Love On My Mind" with vocals by Amanda Wilson, an excellent reworking of Jackie Moore's classic "This Time Baby" among many, many others. Just check out the track listing.

I recommend this release very highly. Put it on at your next party and everyone will be up on the dance floor asking what you're playing.

5 out of 5 stars Easily the album of the year..........2007-03-23

I am a long-time fan of dance music, but had not heard of the Freemasons until tuning into XM radio 2 years ago. Their tracks and remixes are frequently played on the dance stations, and I liked every single one of them, so I decided to purchase their entire CD (a rare occurance for me).

Despite some very minor dissapointments, I could not have been happier with my purchase. Every single track on these two discs is a fantastic, heart-pumping catchy wonderfully-mixed piece of music.

As with all artists there are similarities between tracks - but in the case of the Freemasons, this is a great thing. Each track blends wonderfully with the previous one, making sure you never miss a beat.

I am partial to their remixes, but the original tracks are just as fantastic. My absolute favorite tracks include:

*Atlantic+Pacific (A brilliantly arranged instrumental - Not sure why these are split into two tracks, they're essentially one long song)
*Mesmirized (A remix of a rather boring Faith Evans song, which turns it into an anything-but-boring dance anthem)
*Nothing But a Heartache (A Freemasons original - the catchy hook gets stuck in your head for days)
*I Wasn't Kidding (A remix of which I've never heard the original, but after hearing this version, I don't think I'd care to hear any other version. The funky guitar riff makes this one to listen to over and over again)
*Love on My Mind (Another Freemasons original - One of the most-played tracks on dance radio, with good reason)
*Boy Meets Girl (I'm not sure if this is the Freemasons or not, the disc does not specify...It lists the artist as Walken. Nonetheless, it's a great "Freemasons-esque" track that will be sure to get you dancing)

Only criticisms:
*The mix of Shine by Luther Vandross (one of my favorites) they included here is too fast for my tastes. It really takes away from an otherwise brilliant remix
*Ring the Alarm by Beyoncè is not included. If you can purchase it separately I suggest you do so...It (like Mesmirized) takes a rather bland R&B song and injects new life into it. It really is a top-notch track that is sadly missing from this collection
*Rain Down Love, while decent, is not as strong a track as the others. There are two versions included on this CD - neither one particullarly shines. If you can find the mix that blends it with Boy Meets Girl, snatch it up.

All-in-all, if you have ANY interest whatsoever in dance music, do not hesitate for a second and purchase Shake Down by the Freemasons. You won't be dissapointed....don't let the price scare you away, it's worth it and thensome.

5 out of 5 stars Charge $[...] for it, I'll buy it for that price too!.......2007-02-10

Okay, keeping at $[..] would be better of course... :)

I'm glad that legal download iStore place hawks only the crippled version of this 2 disc set (it contains none of the remixed songs, only the Freemasons' original scores, which alone are formidable...). But I digressed. The iStore compelled me to find the FULL album, and here it is on trusty reliable amazon.com!!

These Freemasons cats know how to do electronic music. Their original scores re-invigorate and renew a music genre that has become dull over the years. With aplomb, may I add.

And their remixes of R&B songs do them real justice. The original R&B songs have merit and they choose artists with phenomenal voices (I dig R&B too), but the remixes add a new, totally different, and energetic (Red Bull-worthy? :-D ) dimension that makes the purchase of this CD set worth every penny, if not twice as much as far as I'm concerned. How one can successfully turn a smooth, suave R&B song into a beat-driven rave-worthy dance track is beyond me, but they've done it... (their remix of Faith Evans' "Mesmerized" is an all-time fave...)

It's all truly great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Bomb!!!.......2007-02-03

2 discs of absolutely peek time, floor destroying, anthems. 28 tracks flawlessly mixed over 2 CDs. Featuring Freemason's best of the best remix's & self produced tracks. Remixing some huge names in both R&B & Dance Music such as Beyonce, Fatboy Slim, Faith Evans, Blaze & Luthor Vandross to name only a few. I was a little skeptical at first that this would be a bunch of cheez'd up Diva house, & while there are plenty of vocal tracks here, nothing could be further from the truth. Anyone looking for a pumpin' house album this is it, although a little spendy with a $30 price tag this CD is absolutely worth every penny.
