    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fabulous!!.......2007-07-23

I've always like Mel B when she was in the Spice Girls, i think she's the one who can really sing (also emma), this album is really really nice! Just because they didn't have much promotion on it, but it's really good!
This album is sooo much better than her first solo album, Hot. Loads of great tracks in there, a perfect CD for getting ready for night out.
I especially like the song "Hold On", "Today" and "Say Say Say"... !!
It might be a bit crazy to spend $37.99 on a CD, but i think it's totally worth it!!

4 out of 5 stars Better than most solo projects.......2007-06-23

Melanie Brown's second attempt at a Solo Album was a sucess. I LOVED every single song on this album. You'd be thick not to buy this.

3 out of 5 stars Not good, not bad........2007-03-27

I must say that after listening the progress of Mel C, Emma, Geri, even Victoria in a few tracks I heard on the internet of her never released album, I think Mel B shows less progress doing an album like this.

LA State of Mind has both good and bad, but is not as good as many Spice albums. It has great songs such as Beautiful Girl, which I think is the best and it could have been better as a single than Today. Other great songs are Stay in bed days, LA State of Mind and Hold on. But Sweet pleasure... I hate that song as the same as Forever's "Time goes by" and Hot's "Hell no". I consider Music of the Night a copy of Geri's Mi Chico Latino because of the style (and is not as good as Geri's).

I'm going to say, this album is OK, but only for Spice Girls's fans, specially Mel B's fans.

    4 out of 5 stars Think "L.A.!".......2006-11-20

My how time changes things. Back in 1998, whilst touring America with former bandmates the Spice Girls, Melanie B declared that New York should've been her home. "Urban". "Raw". "Real". Adjectives she used to describe New York, while adjectives such as "tacky" & "false" described Los Angeles.

But motherhood & exposure to the nature of British celebrity must have changed Melanie's mind. Melanie now does indeed live in L.A. Though, after the madcap adventures of the Spice Girls, a divorce, a misdirected debut record, a bestseller book,& a daughter mellowed the "scary" in this spice.

"L.A. State of Mind" finds Melanie not discussing the Hollywood nature of L.A., but celebrating the warm & inviting calm it brought her. After her debut, Melanie took time between that record & this one. The sound here is radically different from "Hot", rightfully & thankfully so. Melanie was much more involved in this indie affair.

The eclecticism Melanie was known for, comes through on inspirational opener "Today", a number that is so positive, one can't help but smile. Even the subject of bad days is tackled with a Sheryl Crow affirmation feel on the bouncy "Stay In Bed Days". "If I Had My Life Again" & "In Too Deep" give the record a sturdy center, as they frankly address life & love, & celebrate them in all their confusing glory.

She's never sounded better, if at times she reaches too much, on "Beautiful Girl" & "Hold On". Hell, she smoulders on the spoken, sexy "Sweet Pleasure".

Overall, while this was not at all a commercial or critical darling in her native Britain or anywhere else for that matter, those that have heard it have come away with positive words about it. Melanie seems content & it comes across here. Honestly, with humor,& a little "spice". Forgive the pun, highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars When people look up the word "flop" in the dictionary..........2006-07-09

...they should find Melanie Brown's picture next to the definition. Is there such a thing as the post-Spice Girls curse? Apparently so, since neither Sporty, Baby, Ginger or Posh have managed to keep their musical careers afloat after the band split up. And our beloved Scary is no exception. Apart from the singles Word Up, found on the "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" soundtrack, and I Want You Back, which featured Missy Elliott, all of Mel's songs failed to inspire any kind of interest. Her debut album Hot was a flop... and LA State of Mind was an even bigger one, selling an appallingly poor 4500 copies worldwide. Why is that? Well, maybe it's because it's a very bad album? With laughable songs and really low production values? In fact, I think that this is exactly what Melanie has been missing : a good producer. I Want You Back was awesome, but only because Missy Elliott produced it. I mean, think about it: the Spice Girls were a manufactured band that worked only because their Svengali Simon Fuller is a marketing genius. As a team, they were great, but individually, they all suck, because none of them has the talent to make it on her own. Except maybe for Mel C, but I digress. I read somewhere that Melanie Brown has retired from the music business. Maybe it's just as well, because it seems that nobody wants her there anyway.

On a sidenote, I purchased this version, which comes with a 30-minute mini-documentary on Melanie & this record. If you are a Spice Girl fan who has fallen out of step & wishes to get reaquainted? This is perfect way to do so. For the Spice Heads? This just shows why we love Melanie. She comes across as down to earth & humorous, plus learning the behind-the-scenes of this LP is nice!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly One Of The BEST..........2006-04-02

Melanie wanted to make a feel good album and this one is what it is. every song is good. this is one of the cd's that i can put in and listen to the whole thing. and the dvd is awesome, its like 40 minutes long, and it is neat to see her house and how she lives life in l.a. she truley did a wonderful job. it has a vary of styles from, rock, r & b, dance (80's style), & latin. a great buy, nice to listen to on a relaxing but hot summer day.

4 out of 5 stars "That's Not Hot" Means Good..........2005-10-19

Melanie Brown has made a musical accomplishment over her first album, "Hot", but not a popularity accomplishment... Hot's highest chart position was in the 20's... not good for a spice... but then you look at "L.A. State of Mind"... A better album (without a doubt), but #453 is terrible. Amber Cafe, Melanie Brown, and the other spicers should be grimacing at this number. Terrible promotion and management.

Now the DVD is something else... It's a half hour of your life you'll never get back... thirty minutes of Melanie Brown explaining that she lives in L.A. and not U.K. Boring. I needed a bit more background info behind the tracks... especially songs like "Stay In Bed Days", "Hold On", "L.A. State of Mind", and "If I Had My Life Again"...

    01. Today - (4/5) - The worst selling single of the spices (Thank Amber Cafe's poor promotion for that) at #41, this song deserves better but I thought that "Stay In Bed Days" or the album title track would have made a better single for this album... It's a great song for those early mornings for work where you get up and are feeling disheveled, yet when you boost the stereo volume in your car, you are suddenly enlightened.

    02. Stay In Bed Days - (5/5) - Could have been a top 10 single in my opinion (under the right promotion of course), this song has extreme potential with the theme everyone can relate to: Days you just want to shut everything out... is life worth living outside your home? "Is This Me? Is this what I'm really like?" and "Am I a misery? Have I lost it in L.A.?" are understandable questions. Musically, this song is uptempo and something you wanna sing out loud with the top down on the lonely or traffic road on the way to your next destination.

    03. Beautiful Girl - (4/5) - This song has a beginning to it that sounds like an enhanced version of the motifs of India.Arie's "Voyage To India" tracks (Growth, Healing, Gratitude) and is probably directed towards Phoenix. A formidable song, but not my favorite.

    04. Music of the Night - (4/5) - A lively beat. Four of five stars for the sole reason that Melanie Brown did not triumph over Emma's "Crickets Sing For Anamaria" in the Latin/Samba/Salsa category, but however, did overpower Geri's "Mi Chico Latino" (which to my opinion is a horrendous tune) and so it deserves its rating.

    05. If I Had My Life Again - (5/5) - Last night, I had a dream. I dreamed my friends in choir and I all sang with my chorus teacher who sang lead vocal for this song and at the end said he had no regrets in quitting. This song's lyrics are incredible and to me, they're about Melanie Brown's accomplishments in the Spice world, her life with Jim, her daughter Phoenix, and her first solo album which tanked in the charts... It's a great piece.

    06. In Too Deep - (4/5) - An airy piece which I rate for out of five stars for her creative cut off on "STOP." This song shows that she has grown as an artist and has conquered her life's problems. Pop as this track can sound, it beats some of Emma and Geri's pop songs.

    07. Sweet Pleasure - (1/5) - An eleven track album has a weak link in this case... L.A. State of Mind would be #353 instead of one hundred lower in my eyes if this song were wiped from the planet. It's hardly worth one star... such a "Hot" sound...

    08. L.A. State of Mind - (5/5) - I got this CD for the $26.99 in LA at tower records... West Hollywood/LA is the real State of Mind... (Gay baby shower at the nicest hotel got me this... praise my mother) Its beat is superior to Spice's "Holler" and is a laid back rhythm and blues that could be turned into a top 10 single... who doesn't want to hear of my beautiful city?

    09. Say Say Say - (4/5) - This pop track holds its own with describing the qualities a man should have without sounding too much like "Hot" or "Sweet Pleasure".

    10. Bad Bad Girl - (2/5) - Melanie Brown claims on the DVD that she loves this song because it goes rock... I hate this song because it goes nowhere... what is it REALLY about? The chorus is what's holding up 2 stars... that's it.

    11. Hold On - (5/5) - Beautiful. (What? No paragraph on this track because it is impeccably wonderful?) Simply beautiful.

Overall, this album triumphs musically, but I don't think Melanie Brown will be allowed to produce a third album. She can thank "Hot" and "Amber Cafe" for this... Mel, take this sound to Virgin/EMI, and they JUST MIGHT TAKE YOU BACK! You can be as great as Emma, Geri, MELANIE C!!!

5 out of 5 stars Scary (Mel B) is back!.......2005-08-23

Ok, I am gonna start this review with the song overviews:

    1. Today (5/5) - This is a very good opening song to this album because this is a feel good album. This song just makes you feel good and its got quite a catchy beginning.

    2. Stay In Bed Days (4.5/5) - Oh this song is just as good as Today. Its just another feel good song. I only didn't give it 5 out of 5 because its got a bit of a country twist in it.

    3. Beautiful Girl (5/5) - This song is about her daughter, Phoenix. It is a very nice song and the 2nd best slow one on the album.

    4. Music Of The Night (Perdido) (4/5) - Wow! I didn't expect a latin song from Mel B. Geri and Emma did it and I knew they would but not Mel B I didn't think. It is a dance tune and you just can't help but like it but it does get annoying after a while.

    5. If I Had My Life Again (2.5/5) - I don't like this song very much, it sounds like I Believe from Hot but I like the part in the middle where it gets faster.

    6. In Too Deep (4.5/5) - Another song that makes you feel good. I love this song!

    7. Sweet Pleasure (0.5/5) - I don't like this song at all. I just think its dumb, it was just like Feel Me Now from Hot.

    8. L. A. State Of Mind (5/5) - This song cheers me up everytime I listen to it. Another feel good song. The beginning is funny and its just a good song!

    9. Say Say Say (5/5) - The best slow song (and song overall in my opinion) on the album. This song is just amazing and the perfect slow song for anything!

    10. Bad Bad Girl (5/5) - Ok, I will warn you, this song is totally 80's but that doesn't mean its bad. It also has to grow on you. I didn't like it when I first heard it but now I LOVE it. It's awesome.

    11. Hold On (5/5) - What a great close to the album. This song just tells you to believe in yourself and its really good.

Ok, now Mel B (Scary) was my least fav spice girl and still is but I really like this album. Hot was not the best but this is way better. I like Geri Halliwell the most (as most spice girl fans did). I still listen to the spice girls of course and I really like that they all did and are still doing solo works!

This is a great album and its worth the money, trust me!

5 out of 5 stars Melanie Brown - In her own state of mind.......2005-08-22

Well all the British reviews that are negative on the Artist-Formerly-Known-As-Scary (and still to most of us) come from reviewers who "haven't" heard the album for its value, but assumed it was a "Spice Girl's attemt" at a phenomenal solo effort. Every effort in its own way is "phenomenal" to say the least, but Melanie Brown is a grown woman and isn't singing about childish dreams, yet goes onto her life as a diary entry and her feelings as a mother, singer, actress having done it all and having finally found a place to call "home". From songs such as "Music of the Night (Perdido)" to "Today" Melanie refreshes and enlightens us with what happens when you get into your own groove and and face the challenge of a new day, every day.
Whether you're driving, on the go or even at home cranking the volume on this great album, it's something to dance and hum to as you're showering, cooking, eating or even relaxing on the sofa. All I have to say is "go Mel" and keep up the good work, because you still have fans dedicated to you and your great music! Please keep up the good work and release more albums that suit your taste, not the industry's!

I don't buy a lot of jazz, but I saw Raul Midon on TV. He played just two songs and I was amazed. I bought this CD and I was impressed even more. I was impressed enough to buy this CD again and send it to a friend who does buy a lot of jazz. She was also impressed. She says this is good driving music. I say its good music to have playing all day in the background as you work. It'll put you in a good groove. It's now at the top of the list of our jazz playlists. I wish I could see the guy perform in person.
