This is Adult.'s Thrill Jockey debut, though it does not signal an end to their own Ersatz Audio label. Adult. decided to devote all their time to the band as opposed to the label, which they have run for over seven years. "D.U.M.E." contains six songs, all exclusive to this EP. While the band have been unfairly championed as part of the electro-clash movement, their music knows no class distinction. Fans of electronic, dance, indie, pop, and punk will enjoy these sounds.

Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

This Truly Is "Bel Canto"!.......2005-07-06

Beverly Sills is justifiably famous for her performances and recordings of the three Donizetti "Mad Queen" operas--"Anna Bolena", "Roberto Devereux", and this one, "Maria Stuarda". All three recordings are wonderful examples of quintessential bel canto operas performed by excellent casts, but this recording of "Maria Stuarda" must stand out. While other sopranos may be considered to have richer voices, Sills' technical mastery, incredible musicanship and acting skills make her one of the finest performers of bel canto opera in the second half of the 20th century.
And unlike in her recording of "I Puritani", here Sills is ably supported by her fellow cast members. Stuart Burrows is an elegant and refined Mozartean tenor--very different in style from Sills' fierce and somewhat "over the top" portrayal of Mary Stuart--but it works very well for his role as the ineffectual Leicester. And one of the joys of this recording is the chance to hear the sadly under-recorded American dramatic soprano Eileen Farrell in one of the very few (if not the only) full length opera roles she recorded. Her rich and powerful soprano is a joy to hear, and her duets with Sills are musically stunning--one of the major highlights of this opera. If you like bel canto opera, you'll love this recording.

An essential Maria Stuarda...the only one, in fact.......2005-05-01

One might argue that Mary Stuart (bloody Mary) should never have been represented as a heroine, but here in the opera she is regally presented as a vulnerable, innocent woman. And who would be better to represent this queen that America's queen of opera, Beverly Sills? I've heard several renditions of Mary Stuart, from Montserrat Caballe to Leyla Gencer and even Edita Gruberova, but Beverly Sills outsings them all as Elizabeth's rival to the throne. She had all the notes in her throat, plus drama in her veins that makes her in every right of the word a queen. No other recording of Maria Stuarda has caught my attention as this, and I believe it should be a part of your collection. Eileen Farrell, who sings Elizabeth in this recording, is an amazing singer who not only sang Wagnerian roles well, but also bel canto roles. Listen to her duets with Sills...simply amazing. Highly recommended recording!

Glorious Maria Stuarda - The best on records.......2005-02-03

Beverly Sills is famous for her recordings of Donizetti's Tudor-Queens, and this recordings proves how right her fans are. Her Mary has it all that some lack: Fire, dignity, vocal brilliance, touching drama, delirious passion and Bel Canto abilities that haven't been equalled since she and Montserrat Caballe sang these roles. Just listen to Maria's prayer... It'll take your breath away. Mary Queen of Scots may not have been such a heroine in real history but this recording certainly is nothing short of a miracle with an equally brilliant cast.

Remembrance of Things Past.......2004-05-30

In this recording, I am pleasantly reminded of my early exposure to opera; and still hear much to validate my early impressions of the bel canto genre. Beautifully sung and played, this performance still stands out just for its pure flowing continuity; but no less admirable are the more dramatic moments, especially featuring the late Eileen Farrell. A pity she didn't sing more in complete opera performances, both onstage and recordings. Truly, a great dramatic soprano. Beverly Sills is, as always, a delight to hear. Such gorgeous tone and floating pianissimi. Also a notable range. Perhaps not the most depth of any voice in opera, still, always a pleasure. Just plain beautiful. Textually complete, particularly in comparison to the Sutherland version. This is opera as theatre, at least as close as one can get in bel canto. I only wish I had witnessed a performance onstage of this work featuring Sills. But, alas,I was a kid at the time, and it was never brought to my city, in spite of all my hopes. So, this recording on cd is a real treat for me, especially in view of the fact that the original lp pressings on audio treasury were a bit substandard. Also quite good are Stuart Burrows, and, to a lesser degree, Louis Quilico. If only his son had been singing professionally then. Recommended for anyone that appreciates beautiful singing.

Right back at you, damn basher! If you won't leave Callas alone (You've done her enough harm!) we'll retaliate! We warned you! Sills has a thin, screechy voice and is miscast in this dramatic role! Go for Sutherland instead!

They haven't lost it.......2005-07-09

Adult.'s previous albums "Resuscitation" and "Anxiety Always" are two of my favorite recordings ever - but the "D.U.M.E." EP is a big departure in the band's sound, moving from the sterile, dark electro of their previous work to a series of muddy, noisy, enthusiastically lo-fi rock songs.

Their collaboration with the Dirtbombs has perhaps seen its fruition here, as loud guitar sequences sneak into these songs in places. But mostly what we have here is a sort of treated electro that's much more aggressive and confrontational than anything else they've done before. Somehow this EP lacks the menace of "Anxiety Always", but it's still worthwhile for fans.

Adult. is one of my favorite bands. It's been two years since their last release. Their last tour was a big success and the gained many fans by their enthusiastic performances. Many collaborations have taken place in the meantime. Ones with The Dirtbombs and Death In Vegas stand out. Adult. never seem to stay doing one thing for very long. This record is starker and more aggressive than anything they have done. Some of the song titles "Hold Your Breathe" and "Get Me Out" reveal familiar themes. But the sounds are a shock. "Get Me Out" reminds me of the first Siouxsie and The Banshees record. "The End" has some guitar on it, and sounds like post-punk bands of 1979-82. The music is very violent and anti-social. Only the song "Don't Talk" sounds like their previous work. Adult. Has moved on. This band has become unique, iconic, and capable of doing no wrong. Definitely an interesting record. They have created their own studio and their own label. They have created the environment for their music to exist in. Most of these songs were played live first. Adult. has been around for seven years and are better than all these fashionable movements that many associate them with.

Adult. is one of my favorite bands of recent years. This is a great e.p. Not as electronic as the past but awesome and has the Adult. feel to it. D.U.M.E. Rocks the house and my car down to the pavement! Nonstop listening since I bought it 3 weeks ago. Dancable ,Loud, Sexy, Angry, Chic, Hot, Spooky & PURFECT!!!
They are great live and am excited to see them in their hometown! They are flawless period. I'm glad they're not "huge" and they play small venues. They are the coolest of cool, and the hipest of hip. I'm glad they make music which makes my life better! They prove that not all current music sucks like most radio friendly crap! LONG LIVE ADULT. period. :-)

String quartet versions exelled such beautiful performance! After reviewing Tupac Shakur's original albums, I decided to check out the string quartet. To be honest, Tupac's work shows such strong, beautiful meanings of his life while the string version plays the beauty of many instruments dedicating to Tupac's work and his music. For those who love rap and a side of classical listening, this is one collection you can't pass up to!

Pot Porri of Marches.......2005-04-22

The only problem with this series is that all the recordings that comprise it are no longer in print. Bandleader released entire LPs and CDs of all the bands highlighted here. Now I guess they are all out of print and all you can get is the pot Porri here. I prefer hearing the original recordings and have never been a fan of great selections stuff. That being said, if you are new to military music this is probably the only opportunity you will get to hear many of these fine British regimental bands as most are gone now, and more perhaps shall join them soon.

Most of the bands are well known, and for the benefit of the listener above, the band of the Hussars and Light Dragoons heard here is one of the new bands formed from the 13th/18th Hussars; 15th/19th Hussars; The Royal Hussars, and the Queens Royal Hussars, among others, all combined sadly into one in 1994 upon the demise of the regimental band structure. This band may soon be gone with current reductions in the works as well. Enjoy while you can!

Very good, as far as it goes.......2002-01-11

On this, the ninth of ten volumes of "The Great Marches", the military style of march seems to be the only one considered "great", even more so than on some of the previous CDs in this series. Not that these selectons aren't deserving, but more variety would have been nice.

Also, the liner notes were a bit sketchy, although giving some information about the composers and their compositions, and written in a uniquely British style ("The inclusion of Foot Guards favourites never go amiss", for example.) And it would be nice to know what the initials are after the band directors' names, and what the function of some of the units are, such as "Hussars and Light Dragoons", that are unfamiliar on this side of the Atlantic.

This being said, there is at least quite a bit of variety shown within the military type of march on this album, as performed by sixteen different British military bands. About one third are written in the traditional military style, most in the traditional slow tempo of British marches (and also those of continental Europe). These are marches that are meant to be marched to, as opposed to faster-paced American marches which are played in a circus or on the concert stage. One example of this is the British military "Tattoo", which consists of massed military bands, with music and drill on a parade ground or stadium. Other types of miliary music presented on this album include three American marches (one written for a movie, "Midway March", and two in the American traditional military style, "Semper Paratus" and "The Official West Point March"), three "Irish" marches, including one complete with bagpipes ("Killaloe"), two classical marches, four written in the "modern" style, and four that include popular or traditional songs, as opposed to original themes.

The playing of the pieces is, of course, really excellent, as is expected of British military bands, which are some of the best around. As for the "best" combination of a march and the band which plays it, my vote would go to "Flying Review", by The Central Band of the Royal Air Force, with Machine Gun Guards and The Mareth Line close behind.

If you are looking for a band CD with a balanced program, this might not be for you. However, if military marches are your thing, and you are looking for something other than strictly American style, this might be right up your alley!
