Another Late Night [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
While the international press seems to have covered every other electronica act but them, Fila Brazillia's Steve Cobby and Dave Pork have created some of the most lasting music in their hotly hyped genre. It's their playful indulgences, not to mention their smashing good taste, that make Fila so fine. The British duo maintain their majestic muse on their first-ever mix CD, Another Late Night, dropping aromatic funk, jazz, hip-hop, dub, and weird audio snippets in one of the best left-field releases of the year.

The record opens with John Barry's luscious "Persuader's Theme" before rolling through the Infesticons' rollicking old-school rap ("post my testicles on virtual e-mail"), Prince Alla's spacey dub crooning, Mr. Scruff's spooky '30s swing, the Beta Band's yawning stoner anthems, as well as tracks from a mangled cast that includes Marvin Gaye, Brian Eno, David Holmes, Nightmares on Wax, and Fila themselves on "Nature Boy." This is late-night, lost-attitude, can't-move music, a soundtrack for summertime bliss, going bonkers, or heading off to bed. --Ken Micallef

Roaming a psychedelic no-man's land where Tom Waits and Jack Kerouac might converge, Stan Ridgway is an inimitable singer and precision essayist whose song characters wear life's grit under their fingernails. It's doubtful Ridgway ever broke the legs of a no-goodnik named Bing, but gosh darn if you're not thoroughly convinced of it by the end of "Bing Can't Walk," one of a handful of creaky, ramshackle gems gathered together on the odds-and-sods Holiday in Dirt. He may scribble outside the lines musically, but Ridgway's harp-goosed, art-rock vignettes are enormously detailed--witness the bloopy, futuristic "After the Storm," the eerily straight-faced midtempo rocker "Whatever Happened to You?" or the unlisted cover of Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors," cheekily delivered in a character that might have been crafted by Bill Murray circa Caddyshack. Admittedly an acquired taste, Ridgway repays diligence with cartwheeling, consistently unexpected, possibly true parables sucked straight out of the twilight zone that is contemporary America. If Jackson Pollack paintings had sound, they'd probably sound a lot like this. --Kim Hughes

2 out of 5 stars Obscure songs that were obscure for a reason.......2005-08-25

For people who must have everything Stan Ridgway recorded, this is another item for their collections. I only want the good stuff. Apart from Beloved Movie Star, this is material that never goes anywhere. Reviewer Lon Jones was objective about this album -- it is a mish-mash of inconsequential and incomplete work. I won't discourage people from buying the CD, however, this should be the last Stan Ridgway album on your list to purchase. First get Partyball, Anatomy, Mosquitos, then The Big Heat, Black Diamond, and Snakebite. If you're still hungry for more, then Holiday in Dirt is just the ticket for you.

5 out of 5 stars He's My Beloved Movie Star.......2004-12-18

Stan Ridgway is not for everybody, agreed. However, I have never ever grown tired of listening to any of his songs. When I heard that he had a CD of unreleased songs, I might have been a tad suspect. However, I remembered that I liked every one of his songs he ever made. So I bought this CD and I love it. Moreover, with "My Beloved Movie Star", Stan delivers one of his greatest songs to date. This guy is the Patron Saint of LA Honkey Tonk on a Casio. I can't get enough.

2 out of 5 stars Let's Cut the Holiday short.......2004-02-19

I like Stan, but this one is just a mish-mash of leftovers that didn't make it onto previous albums, usually with good reason. I was very disappointed with this CD and recommend that you give it a miss.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad, for a B-sides album.......2003-11-17

I don't mind B-sides albums, and R.E.M.'s Dead Letter Office is one of the best I've enjoyed, but parts of Holiday in Dirt seem a little underdone. Stan's goof on Bing Crosby's drunken fall into an orchestra pit, breaking both his legs, is my favorite on the album. I like Stan's sense of humor, and my favorite tracks are always the Garage Band '69's. I could do without My Beloved Movie Star though. It's an interesting montage of Stan's career, the leftovers that never made it on to the final album. All in all, a decent grab bag of Ridgway's music.

5 out of 5 stars Vintange Stan!.......2002-09-27

"Holidays in Dirt" is a remarkably cohesive album, considering that it's made up of rare and/or unreleased material. In fact, it holds up as well as any of Stan's better albums, and sounds more like an album than "Anatomy" (which to me felt more like it was cobbled together from bits and pieces).

HID has everything that has endured me to SR over the years. Losers and hard luck cases and guys named Pete whose lives didn't turn out quite the way they planned. Moments of joy and moments of desperation and moments of unbearable angst. Atmosphere pieces that make you check in the closets and under the bed.

Great stuff.

This addition to the Another Late Night series follows hot on the heels of Zero 7's popular 2001 debut, Simple Things, which fit in nicely with the current staying-in-is-the-new-going-out trend in dance music. What better way to reward fans of all things downtempo and chilled out than to lend their record boxes to one of the genre's most potent and respected series? As a look into the influences behind Simple Things, it's illuminating; every song sounds like it could have been playing on a corner jukebox while they were making the album. From the DJ Shadow-esque "Channel Suite 1" by the Cinematic Orchestra to the Stylistics' trippy nursery version of "People Make the World Go Round," this is music to simultaneously open your heart and nod your head to. --Ruby Tuesday

2 out of 5 stars Mixed mixes.......2005-04-17

Zero 7 has mixed results in their "favorites" compulation, a part of the "Another Late Night" series. Compiled here are several excellent trip-hop tunes, and several similarly good hip-hop tunes. Unfortunately, the two are mashed together in a none-too-pleasant manner.

It starts off on a suitably mellow note with Yesterday's New Quintet, and all seems to be going well for a short time. Then the Quasimoto "Real Eyes" comes in. Don't get me wrong -- it's a wonderful song, and an excellent musical choice. But placed directly after the laid-back trippiness of Quintet's "Sunrays," it comes across as surreally harsh.

After that comes a stretch of more gritty hip-hop, followed by some tripped-out jazz and mellow Joy Zippers, and... more hip-hop, sprinkled with electronica here and there. It ends on a softer note with a trippy cover by the Stylistics, and a song by Zero 7 themselves.

Unlike bands like Snow Patrol and the Flaming Lips, don't expect Zero 7's mix CD to be full of music that shaped their sound. Because there's very little resemblance between, say, Quasimoto and Zero 7's sounds. Both are enjoyable, but there's literally no resemblance at all.

But the problem with Zero 7's "Another Late Night" is not so much the songs selected, but the way they are presented. It seems like Zero 7 simply chose a bunch of songs they liked, and tossed them onto a CD willy-nilly. As a result, they lurch from one musical style to another, and none of the songs flatter one another.

Had the assorted songs been rearranged, Zero 7's entry in the "Another Late Night" series could have been excellent listening. As it is, it's an uncomfortable tangle of different musical styles.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-04-05

Ok, listen up....If you are a fan of the DJ Kicks series...GET THIS CD!!!! This CD has a little more variety than some of my favorite DJ Kicks CDs....ie..Thievery Corporation, Kid Loco, and Kruder & Dorfmeister. This CD has far more of an old school flavor than those...think...AIM....if you like AIM, you will LOVE this CD. I delayed purchasing this one due to bad reviews, mistake!!! I also listened to the samples provided, which I dont feel are quite good enough to give you a feel for this disc. In summary this cd is a perfect blend of acid jazz,hip-hop,old school R&B, and trip-hop. A must for the collection!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jeez, how dim are you lot?.......2004-09-22

Yes, it's a compilation album of tracks that inspired the compiler, just like all the other 'Another Late Night' CDs. Seemingly a lot of folks here instantly dismissed it on that basis. Besides which, the tracks included are very Zero-7ish in vibe:
Cinematic Orchestra's string-drenched Channel 1 Suite, a dub workout of Roots Manuva's Witness, Madlib's helium-voiced alias Quasimoto and winds down with Herbert's mighty remix of Serge Gainsbourg.
Check it out, unless you strictly sit on the Groove Armada/Fatboy Slim fence there'll be plenty of new albums worth investigating on the strength of it.

4 out of 5 stars WARNING, not Zero 7.......2004-08-26

I read the last several reviews here and I wanted to let those folks know out there that this is not a studio album of Zero 7. This is an album of their favorite songs which they have remixed. If you are new to Zero 7, you probably dont want to buy this album, but buy one of their studio albums like "When it falls." If you know Zero 7's work, you may enjoy the odd and downtimepo remixes.

2 out of 5 stars mr. tegu.......2004-07-04

While the music in itself is fine, it is not what I was expecting. As has been suggested, fans of zero 7 should not blindly drop their hard-earned cash down for this one. It is NOTHING like their first and third albums. If you're a fan of hip-hop, you may really enjoy this album. However, I am disappointed that I did not listen to the samples. I would've realized that this album was not for me.

DJ Dan's follow-up to 1999's Funk the System doesn't have the jagged vibes of that record, employing a lighter touch and an ear toward trance techno's particular sense of flow. But unlike the crystal-clear music of trance gods like John Digweed or Chistopher Lawrence, DJ Dan's mix has a dirty urbanity about it that gives it an appealing street smarts. It's a fine line to walk, since too much down-and-dirtiness will turn off those who like their trance to soar in the clouds, while not enough will alienate subterranean club dwellers with a soft spot for the old school. Still, Dan manages it, especially working with slam-dunk material like Carl Cox's "Dr. Funk" and influential progressive house from Eddie Amador, whose approach typifies the uncommonly funky blends found on the Yoshitoshi label. As smooth and sumptuous as trance music can be, it's a pleasantly jolting slap upside the head to hear a DJ with a velvety touch for dance-floor vibe mix in a rougher, house-flavored edge to the proceedings. --Matthew Cooke

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The CD that grows on you.......2004-11-29

Where to start... DJ Dan comes back with a new type of progressive house and Im not sure if I like it!

Till now DJ Dan has been all about funky make you dance all night music. This CD I assume was DJ Dans way of trying something new.

Now Im not saying that the CD is bad, its just not the DJ Dan that we have come to know and love. So if your thinking of purchasing this CD because you want to hear good old dan spin his funk house, then you may want to think about the purchase again. This CD however has grown on me the more times I listen to it.

1 out of 5 stars The repetition never ends.......2004-01-07

This may be one of the worst Cd's i have ever purchased. The everconstant beats, and the agonizing repetition of the tracks just does nothing for me. There is nothing. A revolving nightmare of latin sounding noise.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, just not impressed.......2003-08-31

I got this CD a while ago. I have never been able to listen to it for more than a few minutes. I just don't like the CD. Maybe it's my tastes. If you want to hear some deep, heavy, dark dance beats, don't get this. This has a happier feel than I like, but mostly the songs are just so blah. They are more than blah. I can almost hear my CD player begging me to remove it every time I try to give the CD one more chance. :(

5 out of 5 stars Dan is the Man!!.......2003-01-12

If you know anything about House music, then you know that Dan is one of the best! This cd has all the right elements for the hard house lovers' tastes! No, its not just like Beats or Funk the System, but it is hot hot hot and I highly recommend it to people who can discern between mega hard house and trance...haha! thats so funny that someone would actually label Dan as trance....anyway! Buy it!

1 out of 5 stars Pales in comparison to other DJ Dan work.......2001-02-11

This CD is terrible. I think it is lags far behind DJ Dan's other CDs such as "Funk the System" and "Beats4Freaks". I was disppointed in this CD. Instead, I would recommend DJ Micro "Tech-Mix 2000".

4 out of 5 stars Misunderstood.......2006-10-07

I have to agree with one of the previous reviewers, who said that the first people who reviewed this album didn't seem to appreciate what went into it. Few DJs can put together such a diverse collection of electronic music--techno, house, trance, dance, ambient--and pull it off as well as FC Kahuna.

The blending of tracks here is really good. As someone else already mentioned, Kahuna's ability to make the songs blend so smoothly is truly something to be appreciated--especially from those of us who have worked as DJs and know what a tricky art this is.

The album's strength, however, might also be its fault in the minds of some. Moving across so many different styles might not be the type of sound everyone is looking for in an electronic album. Still, I believe credit should be given where credit is due. It's not perfect, but I think it was an ambitious and stellar effort just the same.

5 out of 5 stars GIVE THE MAN A BREAK, FOLKS!!!!.......2005-11-08

FC Kahuna has done a masterful job of putting songs together for any late night party occasion!!! Hell, you try DJing a party and making all the songs flow without dead silence! FC Kahuna mixes without you even being aware that a track has changed! Just think, this could be another dance mix CD full of material you've heard a million times before--and do we really need another one of those??? HELL, NO!!!!

4 out of 5 stars BANG UP JOB.......2005-05-31

This album isn't for everyone. I didn't like it when i first heard it, and i put it on the shelf, but after giving it a listen a few times it grew on me, and i'd say it's one of my favorites now. Only if they could keep this series going. I'd love to see the Chem bros do ANOTHER FINE MESS! over all its a wacky album especailly sea shells what a wacky track!! but Blurs 'Music is my radar' top's it all. FINE WORK FC KAHUNA, check out MACHINE SAYS YES if you like this

4 out of 5 stars Oh..........2004-07-16

I don't think the other reviews are accurate in the sense that they all knock this as not being a FC Kahuna album...but one look @ the tracklisting and you can see it's not.

This cd is a collection of late night dance songs compiled by the memebers of FC Kahuna. I'll agree that it's not for everyone, but for the most part I love it. From the opening Jolly Music track "K-Fun" to the awesome closing song by The Polyphonic Spree I don't think this cd dissapoints @ all...

I love it...in fact if I could have it's children I would...

...oh.

2 out of 5 stars take it for what it is.......2004-02-15

this is just a compilation album put together by fc kahuna. kinda sorta alright if you like this kind of music and are interested in hearing their influences/peers. personally, i don't usually like this kind of music and fc kahuna is just an exception, so, this is album is pretty, you know, meh...

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic and Effective Mix CD.......2005-12-27

Interesting collection of musical styles, from ambient to dance to funk to rap. Despite the diversity of sounds, the cycle is mixed together beautifully. I didn't know any of the artists going in except the Beta Band, and I still loved it. The liner notes say it best; good mood stuff, great as a background selection after the clubs. "God bless the Infesticons, f*** the Majesticons!" Ya gotta love it.

4 out of 5 stars Devious Downtempo.......2005-02-04

This CD is always in my car, and tracks 10 thru 15 (the funky, jazzy, mellow portion of the CD) help me fly thru 2am traffic the best. The only track i always seem to skip over is the Hero theme - of all the choices, why this? - and the Prelude & Fugue in C Minor. I'd rather this CD had gone out in a blaze of funk than that brain-drooling, wishy-washy note.

I bought this one quite sometime ago. I have a lot of respect for Fila Brazillia as their name speaks for itself. Well, at first it was a bit hard to fully get. There is so much on this disc that it is a bit overwhelming. After three years I catch myself still going ga ga over it. What a great choice of selections. I love the Brian Eno track. Not to mention the crucial reggae track they drop, wound up getting the whole record of that, I believe it was Prince Alla. Mr. Scruff is great. And I am not a real big rap fan or anything ( track 3) but I even like that track, it is entertaining and it isnt all in your face tough guy stuff which is all cliche these days. I like the whole record in its entirety. It is great for travelling, going for a long drive or walk or a trip in your own living room. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2002-09-25

For the most part, I thought this was a good CD. I agree with whatisname in the review above that the track 3 rap is hideous, and there are occasionally goofy parts. The only necesary-skip-button-exertion track is that 3rd one, though. The Brian Eno track with Lebanese vocals is very cool, as well as the Persuaders theme and Mr. Scruff. It is a pretty interesting variety of tracks, really.

3 out of 5 stars fila brasilliyaaaawn.......2002-06-02

I usually love their (Fila's) work, but as mixers on this compilation, they sort of put me to sleep. Since, I tend to listen and focus into the music, this proved a little frustrating as I passed it off as background ambience. Maybe this what they were going for???

2 out of 5 stars Really disappointing.......2001-12-04

To me, a great mix CD should do one of two things: showcase an artist's reinterpretations of songs (like Kruder and Dorfmiester did with the K&D Sessions) or compile songs and mix them together seamlessly. Another Late Night doesn't manage to do either. Instead, it's a lazy compilation with a minimum of apparent involvement from Fila Brazilia. Obviously, their name is on the album as a selling point and not as an indication of their artistic input. This is why I do not trust so-called DJ mixes. Half the time the brand-name DJ or DJs in question show up, select some tunes they like, and link them together in a manner more befitting a junior high school kid operating a pair of Fisher-Price turntables. My advice is to go out and buy the actual albums by many of the artists on this CD, such as Prince Alla or Mr. Scruff. You'll get the same versions, and without the annoying transitions. This gets one star for the execution, three stars for the music, so it's a two star joint.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2001-07-26

This is a good album, but I prefer Lazy Dog and Everything But The Girl's Back to Mine. These guys assisted Greg Dulli with Twilight Singers, so I'd recommend that one as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection!.......2001-07-23

Another great work of the masters of the eclectic sounds. They always bringing an entyrely unique sound to mix. Travel around the currents of downbeat, jazz, soundtrack, chill out and the excellent instrumental version of Marvin's "Plays it cool" and navigate with the two-step sound of Keli's "Suspended". This is a soundtrack without a movie or maybe the soundtrack of your own life.
