4 out of 5 stars Sharp stuff from a talented old-timer.......2002-08-20

In the early 1960s, Generoso Jimenez was the bandleader and trumpet player for the legendary Cuban vocalist, Beny More. Decades later, Jimenez is still holding his own and banging out some tasty Cuban dance music, even at this late date. Ths is a very good record, although if I had to complain about anything on here, it would be the repetitive "Cherry Pink" -styled brass sting, which crops up all over this album, and seems a bit overused. Otherwise, this is pretty solid stuff!

5 out of 5 stars A place no man has been before..........2000-07-28

This is just another example of unique and exciting creations from the soul of this master musician. One minute he brings you into the village with traditional folk-like songs, then suddenly you are taken on a tour to some harmonically theatrical planet where you surrender to a groove that only Hermeto can create with his genius rhythms.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo,"O Bruxo" !.......2000-04-05

IT IS VERY FORTUNATE THAT ,with most of HERMETO'S work sadly out of print, this SPARKLING diamond is still avaliable! for me, this is Hermeto's most fully realized recording. The full compliment of his GENIUS is availed to the listener in this recording, from his wonderful "novo" chorinho, "Intocavel" to the beautifully arranged "Cancao da Tarde" ,Hermeto's cd overflows w/ all of the musical watercolors he controls on his "pallette"--- Baiao, Frevo, Maracatu, Jazz ,Avante-guard,.....all filtered thru Hermeto's joyfully MAD musical genius concept QUE MARAVILHA---- "In Portuguese, his nicknames translate as either "the Champion" or "the Sorcerer", one listen & you of course will understand! The world's "greatest living composer" seems destined for glory only after he passes on, let's give some to Seu Hermeto NOW! Music for the head, but "Candango" will make you DANCE too! BUY, and TELL YOUR FRIENDS! haha! Not enough "stars" avaliable to rate this ! (e nao gosto disso! ) Peppino

5 out of 5 stars IT'S EXCELLENT AS ALWAYS !.......1999-12-26

"So nao toca quem nao quer" is only the tip of the Iceberg from one of the trully greatest Genius of 20th Century, Hermeto Pascoal, a very sensitive person, a man which was born on a remote location of Brazil, in the 30s, where he hadn't even a radio, nor electricity nearby. The most part of his work were not recorded yet. He learnt the transversal flute secrets in less than a month, and learned electric bass reasonably on a few hours (He needed to play that night). He has no musical label. His music is deep, few people can understand. When a child, he used to throw a piece of iron against a rock and reproduce all it's sound on a little accordeon. I've seen the most dazzling things from him, like entire pieces where he harmonizes human voices speaking (search for the album: "Lagoa da Canoa, municipio de arapiraca" , and on TV, and listen to him playing the song "Brasileirinho" on his "mustache". He can play almost all musical instruments, and even transform kitchen tools and all things imaginable into them (He's got Perfect Pitch also) It's a pity we can't find many recordings from Hermeto. He composes every day, even for big orchestras. Search for the CD "Hermeto Pascoal in Montreux", it's excellent. The other one: "Elis Regina in montreux" where Hermeto is a guest is excelent also. I didn't meet Mozart, but, I knew Hermeto, and I doubt Mozart could be a greater Genius of music.

5 out of 5 stars Hermeto gets accessibility, keeps edge.......1999-07-08

On this album, Hermeto allows himself to be melodious, but also stays true to his quirky self. This makes a gret introduction to the Zappa of Brazil, at least the classical-jazzy side of Frank.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely incredible!!!.......1999-03-19

This guy is simply one the best instrumentist and composer I have ever heard. His music is extremely sincere, honest .This is my first Hermeto album and I just finish listening to this record. Now I can understand why guys like Pat Metheny,Lye Mays,Gil Evans and so on love his music.Even Miles have recorded two of his songs.A friend of mine have played with him and he told me that Hermeto can trully play almost every instrument very well...I hope he comes soon to Florida to perform. As a summary, BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Description

After 5 years of working their collective asses off in different parts of the world with different projects, the members of TOCA have finally returned to the studio and completed their debut album to be released by Two Tone Elephants. TOCA has already earned underground praise for their standout appearance on the 2005 Project Blowed 10 Year Anniversary Album and for their collaborations with some of LA's finest rappers including Aceyalone and Mikah 9 (Freestyle Fellowship), Abstract Rude, 2Mex (Of Mexican Descent/Visionaries), Busdriver, Awol One and many others. Outside of the studio, TOCA has earned its stripes playing dynamic, show-stopping performances on stages spanning the US from its home base in Los Angeles to New York, San Francisco, and even Hawaii. The Original TOCA sessions were conceived in 2001 by Danny "Xololanxinxo" Rodriguez (of seminal L.A. hip-hop group Of Mexican Descent). During the summer heat, Xinxo orchestrated a retreat at his California home for the top latin musicians he met while touring the world. Over wild nights of jamming and experimentation, this handpicked collective began recording an unpredictable masterpiece of jazz, punk, hip-hop and reggae. Finally, after years hidden behind closed doors, TOCA will release their debut self-titled album in May 2007.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing perfectly produced album!.......2007-07-29

This album has not let me down. A mixture of rap, hip hop, jazz, funk, punk, 311, and just about anything else you can think of this cd is entertaining and full of tallent. Musically amazing and lyrically beautiful, Toca has moved into my top five favs!

5 out of 5 stars TOCA's Brilliant first release.......2007-06-20

Between the sweet sounds of "Not Too Many People Like You," the jazz riffs of "Hearts of Gold,"the Reggae inspired "Nice Try," the humor and insight of "Nothing Remains The Same," and the rapid rap refrains of Daniel Rodriguez, there are brilliant lyrics and spontaneous musicianship all through TOCA's first CD. There is joy and high energy throughout. This CD is so good, it is impossible to limit it to a particular music genre. Each track is a brilliant invention and gets better with each listen.

TOCA is a remarkable assemblage of brilliant, inventive, harmonious musicians. They have made one of those rare CD's that announces the beginning of an new, important sound in American culture.

5 out of 5 stars Toca : A great mix of high quality, original music.......2007-06-01

Although it's often listed under the hip-hop monicker, Toca is really much more. These are true musicians ----- East Coast joins West Coast, Puerto Ricans join with Chicanos, Spanish joins English --- who create great harmonies together. It is a project that took many years to complete, but now the band members could be proud of the great work they've accomplished.
Don't just listen to one song, since no two songs are alike. Listen to it all, and be thoroughly entertained!

    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!.......2005-02-05

Upbeat, fun, danceable, refreshing, and with smooth vocals.

Nice flow to the entire CD, and it is NOT filled with a repetitive sound.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit commercial.......2001-07-31

This is a good album and has some very nice and pleasant trance, dance tunes but the only thing that prevents me from giving it a 5 star is that it is a bit commercial. The best tracks on the album are "Toca Me", "Every Time You Need Me", "Everybody Knows" and the UK No.1 "Toca's Miracle". It's a good dance party album but it's not trance apart from one or two tracks on the album. If you're new to this genre then it's a good beginner's guide to the world of Trance/Dance scene...Welcome!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Trance CD.......2001-07-13

5 out of 5 stars Great Work for Daddy Yankee!!.......2006-04-23

I haven't bought this cd, but after hearing samples of it, I will admit that this album has some catchy tunes that are enjoyable and you can listen to over and over without getting tired of it. I love the hits "Latigazo, Puerto Rico te Dedico, and Brugal" just to name a few. I also strongly recommend the Barrio Fino albums if you don't have those yet. I also can't wait till his new album "El Cartel: The Album" comes out. Daddy Yankee is indeed the King of Reggaeton with his past album releases. Get "Ahora le toca al Cangri Live!, Barrio Fino, Barrio Fino en Directo, and his new album when it comes out!!

          4 out of 5 stars best songs.......2005-09-07

This cd is the best cd especially if you liek to listen to reggaeton it has really good songs to dance along with.

The debut set from German dance act Fragma, is a sparkling collection of cutting-edge Euro-trance anthems. Right from the start, the album takes off into a galaxy of infectious club beats, ear-pleasing synths, and heavenly female vocals. The opener "Toca's Miracle", one of the hottest singles in years, is simply gorgeous. The soul-tinged vocals courtesy of Coco fit perfectly with the irresistible bass twang, topped off by an addictive chorus. Other standouts include the glittering trance-pop of "Everytime You Need Me", sung by Maria Rubia, the guitar-licked "Magic", sung by Linda M., and the seductive epic "Take My Hand", performed by Damae (who became Fragma's principal vocalist after the release of this album). What makes Toca most enjoyable is its obvious appeal to mainstream listeners, while maintaining a sophisticated and edgy style that will also delight more hardcore dance music fans. An excellent album, to say the very least.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful VOCAL TRANCE/TECHNO/POP album from Germany.......2002-08-24

This is a nice Vocal Trance/Techno album. It has 2 or 3 instrumentals on it, but the tracks that I liked the most were the ones that had POWERFUL FEMALE Vocals that perfectly accentuated the BEAUTIFUL MELODIES.

This album is similar, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS, DJ ENCORE (Intuition) and IAN VAN DAHL (Ace) albums. Actually, It is more similar to the second one.

This is a VERY Enjoyable album to listen to, and would be a Great Addition to a Good CD collection.
          Enjoy.

          4 out of 5 stars Decent CD.......2002-03-01

This CD is great, it's full of catchy beats, but not overly repetitive, like some techno can be. The girls who sing for Fragma are decent, they aren't amazing, but they aren't annoying by any stretch. Chances are that if you loved Darude's CD, or Sylver, or even Madison Avenue, you'll enjoy this CD. But if you're a deep down disco fan, or you don't really like techno, just don't bother with this CD, because this is the definition of a typical good techno CD.

          2 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2002-01-06

I had no idea that Real McCoy just had a new CD out! Oh wait, the cheesy European guy isn't rapping over the dance beats. And the songs aren't as catchy as "Another Night", etc. I guess the first few tracks are okay, but it goes really downhill from there. And did it really need not one but 2 versions of "Toca's Miracle" which sound almost exactly the same?

          2 out of 5 stars Disco Mess.......2002-01-01

This can't be a serious recording. The thing starts out OK if you're not put off by something that screams techno-disco and shoves every old disco stereotype right in your face. But after about the first third of the album, the whole thing goes right into the toilet. To give you some idea of the last two-thirds of the thing: Imagine a music camp for 10-12 year old boys who have never had any music experience. Then after one week (and only one week) of camp the boys are turned loose on an assortment of synthesizers and drum machines. The result would be a fairly accurate representation of the last two-thirds of this album. The girls who do the so-called singing here try to salvage it by throwing in what are supposed to be (I guess)...little squeaks and grunts, but the whole thing is beyond saving. I am fairly sure the band showed up at the studio, recorded the first few songs, the somebody told them that really need more than that for an album...
