Gilles Peterson, Radio One
"the man behind a million great tunes" – Gilles Peterson, Radio 1 Worldwide

Product Description
01 MASINA’S WORLD
This one came together totally spontaneously when I was jamming on the Rhodes with Chris on drums – we’d just finished all the parts I wanted him to lace the album with so I thought we’d kick back and just PLAY!! Back at the other studio I built up the bass, more keys, got Lain to drop some twisted harmonies and at the end of the crazy climax, I recorded my boy’s heartbeat two hours before he was born. Masina’s World. For real!

02 SLIDE
Slide’s about as close as I’ve gotten to a house track on this record. It’s housey, but it’s not house… to me, it’s straight up cosmic p-funk. It’s all about the dance floor on this one, so I got the MPC bouncing on the 2-bar and made this one a posse track with Abdul, Bembé and Lyric L on vocal vibe. Can’t understand the lyrics? Listen closer!!

03 TRAVELING
Capitol A and I had been talking about hooking up on a track for a long time, and it finally fell into place with this one. He’s one of my favorite MC’s – ever since hearing him dropping rhymes on The Roots’ Organix LP way back. Pino came with the bass, Bembé on the chorus, and we had the jam done. Capitol A really lays out the mission statement – spreading the positive vibes and reminding us to keep it real and keep it moving forward.

04 STATE OF THE MENTAL
Bembé is one of the most talented singers I’ve ever come across – she’s totally mutli-dimensional and that’s what I really dig and relate to. Whether it’s jazz, soul, Afrobeat, twisted dance floor or abstract odd-time signatures, she brings a totally unique vibe to all of it. "…Mental" started life as just the beat and the b-line… Bembé brought the vocal pressure and I took the chance to throw down a twisted moog solo and freak the tune out some more. I had some fun flipping the MPC beats as well. "…Mental" always reminds me of Co-op club in London… it all makes total sense when you hear a tune like this there. Never stop the process!!

05 QUINTESSENTIAL
Quintessential is the first time Abdul and I have done something properly on the downbeat tip together. The first time we collaborated we made ‘Relax…Unwind’ and we knew it was time to try some different flexes. Abdul’s like a new school Omar or something. Heavy and truly unique. Kaidi Tatham dropped by and killed it with the moog bass on this one, and we ended up with one vibey soulful head-nod. 06 SYNDROME Syndrome began life as a banging beat just on the MPC and ended up a crazy new school space funk joint – Bembé and Lain on the vocals asking if you’ve got what you came here for – Have you ? We’re only just warming up! I’m a sucker for vintage moog keys so I got busy on this one, riding under, over and in between Bembé and Lain and Joel’s guitars. Joel’s one of NZ’s best kept secrets. My favorite guitarist anywhere! Period.

07 PINO + MASHI
I love those old school records which fade out just when the shit is cooking and leave you wondering, "what the hell happened next ?!!" .. Similar in a way to Masina’s World, this interlude was a jam Pino and I had after we’d done the main bass tracks for the album. I had a break I’d cut up that morning and we just hit a vibe on it. P’s the greatest player on the planet. No argument. Playing with him is like magic.

08 TIDE’S ARISING
Abdul and I wanted to come with a sequel to the vibe we hit with ‘Relax…Unwind’ but something different at the same time. A classic MPC broken soul groove how I like to do them, with waves of space keys coming and going the whole way. Cosmic Afrobeat meats twisted interplanetary soul! Tide’s Arising – a change is coming, out with the old and in with the new. It’s a crazy time in our world, but keep the faith and it’ll be cool – we’ll reach the other side…

09 SILA’S THEME
This one came together part way through making State of the Mental. We were taking a break from trying to crack the code that would eventually become "…Mental" and I pulled up this 7/4 drum break I’d been messing round with, threw dow

5 out of 5 stars Groovy, funky, out of control good!!!!.......2006-01-20

I purchased this album after hearing "slide" on download.com. That song is so slick that I assumed the rest of the cd must be good. I was right!!! Kind of reminds me of Vikter Duplaix meets Van Hunt. Got some r&b grooves, some dance/funky house. Some uncategorizable tracks as well but it is all nicely done.

5 out of 5 stars In a word: WOW!.......2005-05-18

Along with co-conspirators Bugz in the Attic, 4Hero, Restless Soul and few others, Mark de Clive-Lowe is forging the sound of the future. His second album, "Tide's Arising," brims with ambition as the classically-trained pianist, producer, remixer and DJ ably bounds across Broken Beat, Nu Jazz, Deep House, Electro Funk and styles that haven't even been named yet. This will easily rank among the best electronic music albums of the year.

5 out of 5 stars BANGIN' Beats.......2005-04-09

Where to start? Or where to carry on since Mark's put some of his own notes on here? But this cd for me is one of the best pick-ups of 2005. Mark De Clive-Lowe's no stranger to the sound or the genre and the musical connections. The dj's he's worked with is staggering; whether it be house, hip-hop, R&B to DJ's in Japan and throughout Europe. I first really got into his sound off of Rainer Truby's "Glucklich" series where the pumped up electro samba 'El Dia Perfecto' kicked in before 'What's Baby Singin' and have followed since... and am glad that they're available state-side!

This cd is amazing. It's got a little of everything in it. Blissful beats, psychodelic trip, smooth & soulful vocals and that "thing" that loops you back for more... maybe it's just 'quality'. The CD starts out with the perfect intro "Misina's World". Percussion and a sort of slight jazzed-up affair take you right into "Slide", a track where when you think you've gotten the gist of the beat and vibe, it slides a little something extra at the end of the verses... right with the keys. "Travelling" follows it up, featuring Bembe Segue and Capital A (Antoine Green, I believe... from "Serve it Up"). It's a free flowing rap - albeit a little short! But the cut that really blew me away followed it: "State of the Mental". This is the type of cut where you really can feel the beat, and get into Bembe's vocals and the genius of the track design. It's bliss! You close your eyes and get taken to another world. I could rave on about all the cuts but heck... just pick this up and see it for yourself. "Pino + Mash", "Tide's Arising", "Heaven" and "4.Y.V." were a cut above too. Oh yeah, and don't hit 'stop' after track 13.

This is slammin'. It's broken beat heaven with some smokin' soul jammed in, crazy fun to spin. You can tell that they had fun making the album and let creativity take control. Just look at some of the artists that were included - Nathan Haines, Bugz in the Attic, Bembe Segue, and loads more. Cuts on this will most definitely be on several playlists for some time to come. But the real question is... when will the feature remix project come?? Imagine how the Bugz, Gilles Peterson, Kyoto Jazz Massive, Rainer Truby, Phil Asher, Jazzanova, 4 Hero and several others will remake some of these tunes. And if you dig this, by all means check out work by those DJ's, or just go by labels... Ubiquity, Compost/Sonar Kollectiv, etc. This is a bit different from his last release, far more funky. But it's still a great cd - and if possible you might want to check the vinyl.
