This album however does nothing to advance him as a songwriter.
Many of the tracks here, while played with blistering passion, lack hooks or grooves and so seem to meld into each other with none really standing out. Yes, there are the trademark harmonic squeals, blazing solo's and bone crunching riffs, but the songs themselves lack any sort of hook that would keep me listening. Unlike Zakk's superb craftsmanship on his collaboration with Ozzy's songs, this album just "Bored me to Death"

The Blessed Hellride finds former Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist and Black Label Society frontman Zakk Wylde playing all instruments bar the drums, yet retaining an intensity that Osbourne has sadly lacked for some years. Combining the bludgeoning heaviness of Black Sabbath, the Southern flavor of the Allman Brothers, and the flashy pyrotechnics of Eddie Van Halen, Wylde delivers crushing riffs and head-spinning solos throughout such highlights as the grand "Blackened Waters," the stomping "Suffering Overdue," and "Stillborn," a pained lament for dead love that features Osbourne. Wylde owes such a debut to Black Sabbath that his voice is nearly indistinguishable from Ozzy's, and he lacks subtlety, as evinced by the clattering percussion that invades the otherwise melancholic closer "Dead Meadow". Even so, this is a cut above the heavy-rock norm. --Dominic WillsAlbum Description
The premier rock guitarist of our generation and his Black Label Society cohorts have raised the bar once again with The Blessed Hellride, a triumphant album of uncompromising vision and undeniable virtuosity that brings a much needed dose of guitar fueled mastery to the national stage. 11 tracks featuring 'Stillborn' (w/special guest vocalist Ozzy Osbourne) & 'We Live No More'. Big brother style CD encryption? Check........2007-05-30
My problem is with the CD itself and the encryption used on it. When I plugged it into my Windows machine and attempted to play it using WinAmp, there were no files detected on the CD. Curious, I chose to explore the CD to see what was the matter. And I found a grand total of 3 files. I tried disabling AutoPlay, and still have this issue. The CD will play if I use Windows Media Player, but I find that that particular player cuts out partway through songs, won't play the disk from start to finish, and it uses up too much resource to leave it running in the background.
I find this extremely distasteful and have grown quite upset with the CD itself. I won't be purchasing anything more from this band if this is how they're going to encrypt their products, despite how good their music is.

Don't take the "Hard Road" pick this up with the bonus tracks!.......2007-06-27
"The Book of Taliesyn" brought Deep Purple closer to the appearance of the famed and great "Mark II" line-up. Ian Gillan and Roger Glover would raise the bar even higher. Before they become part of the fold, there is the tremendous second album and the self-titled third.
"Listen, Learn, Read On" leads off the second Purple release. Possibly, by design the record starts with the shortest tune and ends with their epic cover of a Motown classic. "Listen, Learn, Read On" Features a terrific and varied vocal by Rod Evans along with a perfect guitar solo by Blackmore. Ritchie already is finding his way and it isn't only the ability to excel with his leads and fills but the perfect tone to coincide with the song.
"Hard Road" also known as "Wring That Neck" is the perfect instrumental. Blackmore is tasty with a timeless riff supported by Ian Paice's drumming and Jon Lord's in your face but not over the top keyboards.
"Kentucky Woman" is a wonderful cover to the Neil Diamond hit. Purple does a well-rounded interpretation and deserves credit for not only pulling off a well-respected interpretation but also being open-minded in their selection of non-group recordings.
"Exposition"/"We Can Work It Out" gives us two for the price of one. Starting with their own composition of high energy- merging into a slower cover of the Beatles legendary song. This is the second Beatles selection ("Help" was recorded on the first LP) they pulled off well.
"The Shield" one of the best efforts from the Purple "Mark I" line-up is also contains a superlative singing job by Rod Evans. The lyrics are intense and the clarity and conviction only further engrave them in your mind.
"Anthem" with a mid-evil keyboard sound and a Blackmore guitar that enhances the dark mood is the most overlooked composition on the record but not any lesser.
"River Deep Mountain High" has been interpreted by performers from all musical avenues. The tune partially written by record producer Phil Spector has been enjoyed not only by Motown fans (Four Tops, Supremes, and Ike & Tina Turner) but also by those having purchased records by the Animals, Harry Nilsson, and Bob Seger. Deep Purple's ten minute journey is the most adventurous of all the renditions. It could have been easily too long if they were anything less. With the Blackmore/Lord combination, it takes on a life of its own. Never is there a passage you call superfluous. A climatic ending to a great production.
Make sure to please get the remastered version with the five bonus tracks lead by "Playground." Between Blackmore's aggression, Lord's perfect keyboard, and some terrific nuances by Ian Paice it is a must listen!
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Deep Purples Second Album.......2006-12-02
It still sounds dated and i guess it's fun to listen to while tripping.
But the songs and sound come together better.
Unless your a real fan, i'd by-pass this and move on to there Ian Gillan (Mark 2) phase.
But i think it's worth a listen to.
Wring that neck, We can work it out (Beatles) sound really good.
Kentucky Woman, The hit from the record is OK and i feel it's a bit out of place for Deep Purple. But it's a bit fun to listen to.
The Bonus tracks are pretty good, stand-outs among them BBC Wring that neck and the instrumental playground.
All in All it's better then the last therefore it get's another star.
The Book of Taliesyn.......2006-09-24
Rod Evans - Vocals
Ritchie Blackmore - Guitars
Nick Simper - Bass and Backing Vocals
Ian Paice - Drums
Jon Lord - Organs and Backing Vocals
Not long after their first album was released, they produced their second album, this was a little heavier and had more highlights and less cover songs, the opening track "Listen, Learn, Read on" is a really cool song, the instrumental "Hard Road" has good riffs, but the best song in this album must be "River Deep, Mountain High", it begins instrumentally, but after a while Evans shows how gread voice he really had, this is the best of the three poineering albums, no doubt, buy it!
and 1/2----------------Spitfire Records!!!!!!!.......2006-07-21
So now that we know that, let's talk about Deep Purples' The Book of Taliesyn. It took the industry long enough but they finally got it right for the earlier Deep Purple. These guys did it right. First of all this CD was digitized from the original master tapes. Before this CD the recordings where very bad, definitely not from first generation tapes, if from tape at all. The second thing, they did the remastering at Abbey Road. The sound is really great. They also did a great job with the liner notes. If you buy "Shades Of Deep Purple", "The Book of Taliesyn" and "Deep Purple" these liner notes pretty much all together tell you the early story of the Deep Purple. I am very glad I purchased this CD. Deep Purple was at their peak with this album. I only wished I would have done this earlier. I highly recommend this whole Spitfire series. I don't believe this will ever get any better. By the way for all of you who believe that this band didn't contributed to the hard rock era. Living through it I can remember the actions of people when Kentucky Woman and then River Deep, Mountain High came out. The older generation of the time S#?t a brick.(same response as Hush from their first album. The rawness and the harshness again! This was definitely a group that contributed to Hard Rock. It may not match what happened after these guys MK1 broke up but they did help shape it.
Buy the way this review is about the same for all three releases because when these 3 albums came out they where very close together the impact of all three influenced the music industry.
Better than their debut, in my book.......2006-06-05
The Book of Taliesyn was their second album, released three months later from Shades of Deep Purple, released on Tetragrammaton (a label ran by well-known comedian Bill Cosby), it received a UK release several months later on Harvest, and became the first ever release on that label. Well, in that short amount of time, I thought the band did their homework, and came up with a better album. Certainly it's still packed with covers of other people's songs, and there's plenty of psychedelic gimmicks that are pretty much of its time. "Listen, Learn, Read On" is the opening cut, with plenty of spoken dialog, and the lyrics are subject of the title of the album. The next cut is an instrumental piece, "Wring that Neck", which has an interesting story. Their first studio effort with the Mark II lineup, In Rock (1970) featured an extended epic, "Child in Time" that partially borrowed a song from a San Francisco band called It's a Beautiful Day called "Bombay Calling" off their self-entitled 1969 debut (same album that has their big hit "White Bird"). So It's a Beautiful Day got back on their next album, Marrying Maiden (1970) and recorded "Don & Dewey" that bears an uncanny resemblance to "Wring That Neck". The next song is their cover of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman". I am hardly a fan of Neil Diamond (as is MOR pop in general), so Deep Purple certainly made a much more interesting version of it, the song even has an interesting organ solo from Jon Lord. This was their second (and final) hit with the original Mark I lineup of Rod Evans, Nick Semper, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, and Ian Paice. Then they go cover another Beatles song, which I thought was much more successful than their version of "Help" from their previous album. It first starts off with "Exposition", which is basically more or less early prog rock territory, with extended organ solos, then comes the Beatles song, which while obviously recognizable, has quite a bit of echo. "The Shield" is a nice psychedelic number with rather obvious psychedelic lyrics. "Anthem" is, for the most part, the most pop-oriented piece Deep Purple ever done. If it weren't for the classically-influenced part in the middle, and even a small use of Mellotron, it would have been just a pop song. This was obviously the kind of thing totally alien on the Mark II albums like In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head, etc. Then they do yet another cover, this time Phil Spector's "River Deep, Mountain High" (the one Ike & Tina Turner recorded, and flopped big in the States but did well in the UK). Even in Purple's version, you can still tell the lyrics are Phil Spector.
I really thought this was a move in the right direction, and their next album the band proved they could float just fine without covers of other people's songs (other than Donovan's "Lalena").

"Hey Joe" and all others, don't overlook this again!.......2007-06-26
It's not uncommon that a rock and roll band has a history that is forgotten about. Many times, it is for the proper reasons. Deep Purple`s first incarnation "Mark I" had three terrific records. If they never created another note, they could be proud to have composed such great material.
While to most of the musical universe Deep Purple is "Mark 2" featuring the intense and strong vocals of Ian Gillian and Roger Glover on bass, the prior story begins in 1968. Rod Evans (One of the most underrated singers of the era) and Nick Simper (Bass) may not be household names but were very much a part of the foundation.
"Shades Of" isn't "In Rock." That is not a swipe in the least. It is only a warning to those that are looking for the more metal and improvisational side of the band. What the initial album consists of is terrific material and well-blended rock with Ritchie Blackmore already way ahead of the curve and only to get better.
"And The Address" opens with a tasty riff that you don't forget. It's a solid choice to lay down the landscape of what will follow.
"Hush" is indeed the cover of the Joe South tune. Purple may very well have the definitive version. It is still played on rock radio to this day.
"One More Rainy Day" features a well-crafted sound by Jon Lord on the keyboards. Evans vocal feel is superlative.
"Prelude"/"Happiness"/"I'm So Glad" covers the musical spectrum in a bit over seven minutes. "I'm So Glad" is the timeless tune written by Skip James that was made famous by the incredible Cream version. Purple chooses not to intensify it to that degree but finds a perfect direction using a mid-tempo arrangement and first rate drumming from Ian Paice.
"Mandrake Root" is Purple's first journey into the land of improvisation. As they explore uncharted waters, the band jells well. Jon Lord's keyboards are mixed high giving a memorable performance.
"Help!" needs no introduction. The Beatles classic (Lennon/McCartney) is slowed down to a totally different and unique arrangement. The vocals are heartfelt and the results are pleasant!
"Love Help Me" pays homage to the psychedelic sounds of the 60's Although it may be the least known song on the record it clearly belongs.
"Hey Joe" closes the festivities. There is debate if Billy Roberts wrote the song but never a question how endless versions from Hendrix to Purple will live forever. This rendition isn't full of fire but it packs enough of a punch to get the job done.
Make sure to purchase the remaster with the five bonus tracks because "Shadows" is strong enough to have been included on the original disc.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

There's maybe three somewhat decent songs and the rest are a boreing overload.
The singer sounds dated and so do the band.
I'd say Hush, Help and Hey Joe are the best tracks.
And either one did the band write.
However if your a big Deep Purple fan and want all there stuff.
Buy this one because it's got the bonus tracks.
Which are basically OK.
DON'T PAY MUCH! BECAUSE THE BAND AND ALBUM SOUNDS LIKE THERE STUCK IN 1968.
SOME RECORDS ALWAYS SEEM FRESH...NOT THIS ONE.

This was the time right after they changed name from "Roundabout" to "Deep Purple", in this period they tried to find their sound, because of this 50% of the album contains cover songs from Joe South, Skip James, The Beatles and Billy Roberts, they only used a couple of days to complete the whole album.
The cover song "Hush" by Joe South was their most successful song from the poineering lineup, "Help" was a slower version than the original version by The Beatles, and the final song "Hey Joe" was earler covered by Jimi Hendrix also became very popular from this lineup.
All in all this album is a very good beginning of new Deep Purple fans, just to get the feel of how it all began.

METAL LOVERS REJOICE!!.......2007-02-18
Let us bathe in their Blood, and relish the wailing of their Women!.......2006-09-22
1919 Eternal is a blistering, withering, furious, head-banging assault of full-bore, confident metal: I picked it up not knowing what to expect---I thought, vaguely, that BLS was some bourbon-fueled Ozzy vanity project---popped it into the hopper, and seconds later, stunned and delighted, cranked up the volume setting to DEFCON-1. Within seconds, the rafters were shaking, trees and grass turned yellow and died, and frantic, furious neighbors called the cops.
Zakk Wylde and his band of musical mercenaries (including current Metallica bassist Rob Trujillo) are solid musicians. "1919 Eternal" brews up some tasty metal: Good lyrics, crunching base, strong, mordant rhythms---not the prissy, mincing, navel-gazing "math-metal" so popular at the moment---not tiresome at all, not tediously technical, just heavy as a battleship and twice as brutal.
Good metal for me? The kind of gut-stomping, hard-core, moody, melancholic, doom-laden stuff---power metal, with a little thrash, a little Death---that puts me in the mood to don my steel-horned helmet and ram my head into the wall, then trash my apartment. That kind of stuff. *This* kind of stuff. It's that good. Why the Hell are you reading this---go buy 1919 Eternal now, and bang your head!
But that might be a little unfair to Zakk and his rebel crew, because---for every snorting, ripping warhorse like "Bleed for Me", "Battering Ram", and "Berserkers"---this is a taut, trained, disciplined band of musicians, calling to mind Iced Earth in their ability to quickly lock it down and Jesus, just *groove*, as with "Bridge to Cross" and "Lost Heaven".
Like Iced Earth, yes---but more hellbent, far more brutal, and reeking of Jack Daniels and bloodshed.
This is the kind of music the Kurgan would dig. You know, the Kurgan---the immortal bada** from the Russian Steppes in Highlander, the guy who lashed up his gaping neck-wound with safety pins and who---hell, by sheer a**-kickery alone---should have taken the Prize and McLeod's head?
Yeah. The Kurgan would rock to Zakk Wylde. He'd load up "Berserker", and then he would thrash Hell out of every living thing, and wear their faces, and laugh like a demon.
Let's paint the town Red.
Enjoy.

Heavy rock/metal...with style.......2005-04-14
The strange, synthed 'Black Pearl' is haunting - and like many of the songs on here just explodes into the trademark riffery and pinched harmonics. 'World Of Trouble' has to be one of Wyldes most catchy choruses and one of his best solo's ever. 'Spoke In The Wheel' is kind of reminiscent of Book Of Shadows and lets the ears recover after the blistering World Of Trouble. The only downside, in my opinion, is the mushy cover of No More Tears - you just cannot touch that classic, but when I have 12 others to listen to who cares?
Some people may find the lyrics questionable on some of the songs ("Hey, Hey, You, What You Gonna Do?") and the bass on 'Bored To Tears' is slightly annoying after a while - but hey, then you listen to Spoke In The Wheel and Peddlers Of Death and the doubts disappear. The riffs on this album are more catchy, Zakks voice is better and the songs don't sound hastily rushed. Buy it now!

Come Out and Play- fails to live up to Stay Hungry........2006-01-25
Not the classic album that people would have you to believe.
It's a good album- but not their best album.
If you want twisted sister at their best- get Stay Hungry.
3.5 stars - Good, but definitely one of their weaker albums.......2005-05-19
Twisted Sister released two awesome albums in the early eighties that, while excellent, failed to achieve any mainstream success. Fortunately, the band struck pay dirt when they released their third album, 1984's Stay Hungry. With an onslaught of classic hard rock/metal hits, the album scored points with practically every fan of hard rock. Fans were, needless to say, eagerly awaiting the band's next album. And in 1985, Dee Snider and the guys released their fourth album, Come Out And Play. Did fans of the group get what they were expecting or not? Read on for my review of the album.
As a classic hard rock album, Come Out And Play is a very good album, but as a Twisted Sister album, it's well below the band's usual standards. Essentially, the band has plenty of awesome tracks on the album, but they are mixed in with so many subpar tracks that the album just doesn't hold its own against the earlier albums the band put. The opening track, also the album's title tracks, is one of the band's fastest and most furious rockers, and it's an excellent opener, but sadly, it doesn't speak for the rest of the album. And then comes the cover of the Shangri-La's Leader Of The Pack. This song was a big joke, and its video getting heavy rotation on MTV ultimately killed the band's popularity and caused the band's fans to turn their back on them, who had finally thought the band had, in a sense, sold out. You Know What We Want is a good rocker, but it's definitely a generic one, not too different from what other bands of the day were pulling off. I Believe In Rock And Roll and I Believe In You sound like blantant KISS rip-offs. The Fire Still Burns and Kill Or Be Killed sound like Dokken rip-offs. Be Chrool To Your Schuel, much like Leader Of The Pack, comes off seeming like a big joke and really lacks the potential to please most audiences. Fortunately, most of these songs are still good rockers, and songs like Lookin' Out For Number One and Out In The Streets rock with the best of 'em. Still, even the hardest rockers on here are more commercial-sounding than anything the band did in the past. While a good album, it falls flat by the band's high musical standard set by earlier releases. If you're a Twisted Sister fan who wants all the albums, by all means pick this up; you're likely to enjoy it. If you're new to the band, though, DO NOT START HERE - Stay Hungry remains the best release for new fans to start with.
The Twisted Sister albums were remastered and reissued, and in some cases, the reissues include bonus tracks in addition to the remastered sound! Unfortunately, despite the albums getting the remastering, they are very hard to find (with the exception of Stay Hungry.) Hopefully in time, they will become more readily available.
Come Out And Play is a good album, but certainly a step down from the earlier Twisted Sister releases. Where this album rocks it really rocks, but it's just too similar, in most cases, to the other popular bands of the day. Twisted Sister completists should own this, as it's a good album overall, but newbies to the band should get Stay Hungry first. While a good album, Come Out And Play isn't for you unless you're already a tried and true fan.
