San Francisco Sessions

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
San Francisco Sessions is arguably Mark Farina's seminal contribution to the house music community. The disc opens with soothing beach sounds and heavily effected vocals that set the tone for a warm blend of tracks that are both inspired and inspirational. The mix begins to hit stride around track four ( "Things We Used To Do") with its chopped up vocals, stabbing horns, and a breakdown that would destroy any dance floor. As the mix continues Farina layers his signature Mood II Swing a capellas over a number of tracks providing an excellent sense of tension and release. The remainder of the mix moves deftly between instrumental tracks ("Spellbound"), deep and minimal tracks ("Somethin' Else"), and outright funky tracks ("Seriousfunkill"). Mark has certainly thrown down the gauntlet for future contributors to the San Francisco Sessions series, as this disc has both captured, and helped shape, the sound of West Coast house. --Anish Acharya

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre-at best.......2007-07-29

My expectations were for a "Mushroom Jazz" experience. What I got instead, was repetitive-cheap feeling music.

Don't get this album unless you're a collector

5 out of 5 stars great set.......2006-08-05

this is a great cd, i can listen to it over and over. by far marks best mix

5 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN EXPECTED...........2005-10-21

I have to admit that I love Mark Farina. His style and way of blending all the tracks on this compilation are just awesome. I've seen him at the WMC(winter music conference), L.A, San Fran, and Chicago and he has never upset me in the least bit. He is one of my favorites of all time (including Jeno, Dj Dan, Dj Heather, Onionz, Miguel Migs, all the Moontribe heads). I knew that by getting this I wouldn't regret it and you shouldn't either. It's what house is supposed to sound like. Definitely do not miss.....or you'll hate yourself.

5 out of 5 stars In This House.......2004-05-27

Mark Farina created a masterpiece with this mix. While all house-heads are likely to love it, others who have not been exposed to house would love it to0. There is simply nothing to dislike here.

4 out of 5 stars Keeps Spinning- Update- Trying to pick one?.......2004-05-22

I've owned this CD for almost 2 years and it doesn't get much rest. I playit in my car & while I work. Enjoy.

Update: April 6, 2007- I currently own 6 different Mark Farina CDs. Out of my entire collection of 200+CDs all 6 are in the top 15. However, if you are "new" to Mark Farina and looking to just buy one CD (for right now) pick this one. It embodies the essence of Mark Farina and is a classic on the same level as Zero 7 Simple Things, Thievery Corporation Versions and St.Germain Tourist.

4 out of 5 stars Good CD overall............2002-03-02

......a little too disco-ish for my tastes. In my opinion the one done by Mark Farina is superior , but even that CD the material is not something that I reach for out of my CD wallet every so often. This a good , but not great CD put together with skill , but out of the 250 + progressive/trance/space house/acid jazz/electro/drum and bass CD's I own , it rarely gets much spin.

5 out of 5 stars Best in Deep House.......2001-10-26

DJ John Howard serves us up with volume 2 containing deep tribal tracks and some smooth deep house beats. Once you pop this CD in you get a very smoothe mix throughout the whole CD. Starting very tribal and very smoothly and gracefully working into some great deep house tracks! Never lagging and constantly adding new flavor as the minutes flow by. Overall a great successor to Mark's classic.

5 out of 5 stars Highest Quality House Music.......2001-09-24

Not everyone understands house music ..... Do you remember these words from the "House Music" - Amador? This CD is superb for the people who do understand house music philosophy. John Howard has compiled a unique album, only high level sound, the true sound of the real house, with a touch of deep jazzy grooves. Perfect at night, for making love or for party, very good while driving a car. Absolute must have cd for quality house lovers.

5 out of 5 stars house.......2001-02-21

Anyone who likes good house will totally dig this CD. Its less soulful, less smooth than Farina's Sessions, but more influenced by tribal and latin beats. In other words this is PHAT, or DOPE, or TIGHT... Because it goes like MMMDIT, MMMDITDIT, MMMDIT, MMMDITDITMMM.... ohh yeah baby, even if you're anit-dance music you can dig on this

5 out of 5 stars House at it's best!.......2000-06-23

This CD definitely lives up to Mark Farina's Vol. 1, and that's saying a lot. John Howard has given it his all on this album and it's well worth it. But it now!

John Harbison (b. 1938) and Roger Sessions (1896-1985) are two of America's least-appreciated composers. Their strengths come from their mixture of Modernistic effects with a solid Romantic lyicism at their base. Both Harbison's Oboe Concerto and Symphony 2 show this. Intellectually, the Symphony is more appealing; it appears more richly textured and robust than the Concerto, which is a more formal construct. Sessions's Symphony 2 has a kind of cosmopolitan busyness to it, akin to much of Leonard Bernstein's work, minus the distinct themes and melodies. Fans of the American symphony will enjoy this collection. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars Great Session.......2006-02-03

I can't believe no reviews of this product have been submitted until now. These are BY FAR the greatest recordings made of Harbison's Second Symphony, Roger Session's Second Symphony and, especially, Harbison's Oboe Concerto. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and suggest that this reading of the Oboe Concerto includes the most notes, dynamics and articulations ever committed to disc as far as this piece is concerned. It's the kind of recording that's made for listening!

5 out of 5 stars I love it one and love it again.......2006-05-22

This is a great cd to listen to especially if your driving somewhere and dont want to worry about what's going on around you. I live in Los Angeles and this cd takes me away from the non-stop traffic-make sure you turn it up loud. Excellent choice. I bought this cd because I read another review and they were right. Have fun with this one!

4 out of 5 stars Good Deep House. Let's Dance Baby !.......2005-07-08

This is a really good Deep House effort by Kaskade.

Excellent mixing combined with a great selection of tracks make this CD well worth it's price. It is soulful, jazzy, funky deep house. Smooth, but not chillout. Groovy, but not hardcore dance music. If you like Miguel Migs, Mark Farina, or anything from the Naked Music label, you will enjoy this CD.

I enjoyed more the first part of the CD. Therefore, the 4-star rating. However, there are a few excellent tracks on the second part as well, so it is not all downhill from there by any means. Not at all. Just a couple of weak spots that do not ruin the mix.

5 out of 5 stars For lovers of deep house.......2004-07-20

Kaskade's entrance into the San Francisco Sessions series of mix albums hopefully signals a return of this excellent, but short-lived, series of featured DJ mixes. And if so, what a return it is.

Kaskade excels as both a producer and a DJ, which shows in this CD, which features many of his own songs, all of which are solid tracks. Add to this his ability to seamlessly blend each track into the next, and you have a very polished mix that will probably see heavy rotation in your CD player if you like the sound of Naked Music from a few years ago (Nude Tempo One, Nude Dimensions 1 & 2). The way Love & Music blends into It's You, It's Me is superb, and the dreamy melt of After The Party into Empty Streets is simply the perfect way to end this mix.

I enjoyed this CD the whole way through, with Gonna Get By feeling like the only track that overstayed its welcome, but not to the point of ruining the mix for me. More For The Living was the only song that seemed out of place, which struck me more than usual since it came near the end of the mix and had such a different sound from the songs that bookend it.

I like the choice of using the Jamie Lewis Dub of The Light instead of the version that's been used on countless other mixes. I enjoy the house diva sound, but not when it overpowers the music, and this version strikes a nice balance between the two.

I must say that the moment that really defines this mix is the final track, Empty Streets, which is one of the dreamiest songs I've heard in a long time, with luscious vocals and beautifully subtle production. Oftentimes, DJ mixes will end abruptly or sound like they ran out of ideas and just decided to let the last record play to its completion, but this track shows a definite competence in the proper way to end a mix. It leaves a lasting impression and prompts you to listen to the mix again. Indeed, a rare touch.

In the end, if you like the sound of Miguel Migs (Nude Tempo One & Nude Dimensions 1), Julius Papp, or Ben Watt (from Everything But The Girl & Lazy Dog/Buzzin' Fly), you're sure to enjoy this mix. While it doesn't do anything particularly new, the quality of the songs and the mixing itself speak for themselves. If this doesn't sound like you (i.e., you're looking for more of the tech-house sound of DJ Dan or the Mushroom Jazz sound of Mark Farina), you won't find it here. However, if you want to give this upbeat, soul-filled sound a whirl, this is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars this cd is TIGHT.......2003-12-03

After buying Mark Farina's "CONNECT", a year and a half ago, I fell in love with Kaskade's "Brighter Day", and have bought every and any Kaskade/Ryan Raddon release since...and now since this cd has come out, I have been playing it non stop, and making everyone I know listen to it, too- cause it's that good!!!
I am pretty selective about my music, and what people consider "house",(being from Chicago), and this cd has got the soul, the funk, the beats that I love listening and grooving to.
Every track here on "Soundtrack to the Soul" is tight- but my favorites are 3 (Make My heart), 12(More for the Living), and Kaskade's own tracks with Josyln, (w/her sweet silky vocals) and Finn -5(In This Life) and 6(True). And then, right in the middle of this fab mix, the cd crescendos, with another great remix (More Vox Mix) of It's You, It's Me(track 10), and just blows me away, since I don't think I can EVER get enough of such a great song.Ryan Raddon is such a talent, I am so glad he's out there to make music good again. I will now buy anything he produces, mixes, writes, arranges, etc.
If you want something that will make you feel good, and make you move, GET THIS CD!!! BUY IT NOW!!!

The third installment of this highly groovesome guide to the San Franciscan house sound saunters into your aural space with the watery Western guitar of Juan Trip's "Shadows." Wicked crew co-founder and reggae aficionado DJ Garth is at the helm this time, so it is of little surprise that the slow and stoned groove eventually gives way not to a house stormer but to Rhythm & Sound's "Never Tell You." Garth keeps it diverse with live and loose drums from the highly influential A Guy Called Gerald and Bibi's aptly titled, almost Santana-like "Summer" before finally diving into a liberal selection of faster, deeper, and funkier Bay Area treats. The roster of the record's final third flirt dangerously with some light, jazzy, and not entirely successful numbers; thankfully, Santal's kaleidoscopic "Past and Future Things" waltzes in to save the day. --Bob Michaels

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I'd love to hear him live.......2003-02-04

I can only imagine what his fans feel when DJ Garth throws on another vinyl.

I've long been a fan of DJ Garth and owned all the mixes of his I could find. This particular mix is unique to what I've heard from him. Dub heavy has always been a trait of Garth and the ability to throw your mind into a parellel universe is another trait so very few DJ's can pull off without giving it all away to some candy raver record that DJ's often seem to have a producer's gun pointed at their heads to spin(or they are shamfully silly in their track selection).

The Chicago style house and LA style hum-bug that too often leave a semi music concious crowd waiting for an actual soul to be behind the decks are honored to have Garth on thier side.

This mix takes us to some tropical island of great psychedelic, penetrating blackness where we gather with the native tribe for a drum circle that our pineal glands seem to alone play and lay us down revibed and refreshed into our realitys.

Thats as good as I can put it. Thanks again Garth.

5 out of 5 stars sweet sweet moody house.......2002-02-27

Garth's selections are excellent. The CD moves beautifully from one track to another, from some stomping tech-house into mellow deep house and back. Garth definately knows how to put together a set that has direction and emotion - the heart of house music.

    5 out of 5 stars The 3rd time Around.......2001-11-12

DJ Garth of Grayhound Recordings makes sort of a guest appearance for Om Records to create this delicious eclectic mix. The third installment of the successful San Francisco Sessions and a great follow-up at that. Garth, co-founder of the Wicked Crew, starts the "journey" off with some perfect downtempo reggae and eleganty mixes in some great dub infested house tracks. Although he uses simple fading techniques, the track selection is brilliant. Most are dubbed tracks but that only enhances the great eclectic atmosphere he has set in store for listeners. They work very well together and show a noticable slow change. The house first starts off with some great, jazzy dubbed out tracks and so slowly merges into some great tribal house. Then finishes off with a great work by Santal in "Past and Future Things". Overall, this is one trippy dubbed out mix that can only be done by DJ Garth. Put this into your CD player and experience it to the fullest.

4 out of 5 stars West coast House "in the house".......2001-03-07

This is a real funky house CD. The beats are tight and deep enough to boom the speakers in your jeep. This sounds very much like the house sound of the west coast ie: Doc Martin. If you like house music with some kick and a light latin flavor then this will do nicely. "Burnin" and "Dave on Guitar" are two of my favorites on this CD. The mixing is good and the variety is wide, not just straight house from start to finish. A nice addition to any house music collection.

5 out of 5 stars San Francisco must be a cool town.......2001-01-25

This CD is not exactly like it's two predecesors mixed by Mark Farina and John Howard, respectively. It is funkier, less Mushroom House and more funky house, with a lot of soul!! It is different but no better or worse than the first two San Francisco Sessions CD's, and thus is definately worth having in your collection. At first I was a little hesatant getting into it, but the song "Rise on up and Walk" and the one after that kept it in my CD player long enough to listen to it more and gain apreciation of the rest of the album. This is some excellent west coast house that nearly anyone can and should love!

    Album Description

This double disc collection features two of the hottest house music producers and DJs in today's dance music scene. Both DeSardi and Donaldson were co-founders of the Hazy Daze Collective responsible for Fair Park Records. DeSardi (a.k.a. Land Shark) continues to turn heads with his funked-up production and beats while Donaldson is probably one of the most consistent house music producers on the circuit today, and has produced for such labels as Seasons, Push & Pull, and Choice Cuts, to name a few. This record serves up the freshest mixes and will break new ground for these phenomenal producers as they make their Om debut.

4 out of 5 stars Tech Meets Funk.......2005-03-20

As producers JT, and Lance are at the top of their game. With this double disc, we get to see what they play in a live set. I haven't had the chance to catch either of them play, since I live in the Middle East, but these CDs give me a nice big whiff of what they might be like. JT donaldson's cd goes everywhere from dirty tech to deep and groovy house, filling in every gap in between. Genius is the best possible description. Lance Desardi's Cd, on the other hand needs a few listens to get used to. At first, you would think it might be too techy if you're not a tech house junkie. However, once you play it for the third time, you will notice how driving the CD is, and how great it must sound on a huge sound system in Frisco club. Hats off to both. Excellent CDs. Standout tracks, "Love/Hate," "Laid Off," "Feelings"

5 out of 5 stars This is a great compilation for house music lovers..........2005-02-20

What a disappointing CD! Was so excited to get it and the music selection was amateurish, at best! Don't waste your money!
