Chic's third album finds the band working at full power on "Good Times," a disco anthem with touches of wistfulness and a hint of mortality. As always, the rhythm section's interplay is tight and inventive, while songs such as "My Forbidden Lover" and "Can't Stand to Love You" further stretch the perimeters of the Chic style and its emotional possibilities. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun.......2007-05-15

Songs from an almost-forgotten era of music. Lots of songs, better sound quality than I expected, and surprisingly "modern" lyrics. I'm really enjoying this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Neither as bad nor as good as it could be.......2006-12-27

Novelty songs are like fireworks, bright and nearly omnipresent for a moment, seemingly quite substantial, but quickly vanishing into an acrid vapor and dust. These 20 renditions of vaguely sexual material vary widely in quality and style, but something they share is that not one is a performance of a lasting song. A few are worthy of the repeated listen, but way, way too many wear out their welcome after one go-round. Double entendre is of limited interest to me, and so is the coy and roundabout sexual reference. Yeah yeah, I get the joke, I know what you're referring to when you say that, I just am not all that amused. Oh my, aren't you naughty!

I love the music of this era, and have many CDs that provide me with much pleasure. Helen Kane, Ruth Etting, Annette Hanshaw were excellent singers who, when provided with significant material, produced 78s that will last beyond whatever format of music reproduction comes next. But this is mostly negligible stuff, performed by minor talents. I like Sophie's song a lot, which is sung with gusto and panache. She could work a song, and on this, she does. And Gertrude Lawrence provides a momentary smile. Other well-done or clever bits appear here and there. However, like mediocre sketch comedy, most of this just goes on too long with nothing but the inherently pleasing aspect of its naughtiness sustain it. And that just ain't enough.

Oh, and the notes, while lengthy, are simultaneously ingratiatingly smug and content-free. Living Era has a number of delightful CDs on my shelves, but this one will get few spins. Should have trusted my gut instincts that were pained by that wretched pun of a title.

5 out of 5 stars What a hoot !!!.......2006-11-26

Listen To The Banned: 20 Risqué Songs Of The 20s and 30s offers quite a collection of shameless tunes from the 1920s and the 1930s. These songs were banned from being broadcast by the BBC; however in retrospect they are actually rather humorous. The playful and romantic nature of these songs also makes them timeless not simply because they are funny and amusing but also because romance and $exuality are universal human experiences.

The CD boasts many songs with great musical arrangements and strong performances. I especially like Sophie Tucker singing "He Hadn't Up Till Yesterday;" Cliff Edwards' "I'm A Bear In A Lady's Boudoir" and "I'm Going To Give It To Mary With Love" as well as Ross and Sargent performing "Nellie, The Nudi$t Queen." Excellent!

There are more daring songs on this CD that would rattle some people even today. The Durium Dance Band performs "Let's All Be Fairie$;" "I've Gone And Lost My Yo-Yo" by Billy Cotton and his band and Randolph Sutton chuckles all the way through "Or Anything Else I've Got!"

The sound reproduction from the 78s is rather good although of course there is some surface noise. Brian Rust contributes an essay in the liner notes about censorship in the 1920s and the 1930s. The cover art work design is by Phil Duffy at P. D. Graphics Ltd.

I enjoyed every minute of this CD! I recommend it for anyone who likes nostalgic pop vocals from the 1920s and the 1930s. These are not just silly songs by unknowns; in fact you will be especially pleased as Sophie Tucker, Gertrude Lawrence, Mae West and Cliff Edwards are all represented here. Get this CD and have fun listening over and over again!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Stuff.......2006-06-23

I have this on vinyl, where it is called "Listen to the Banned", and it is a superb collection of risque songs that are genuinely funny. I especially like the two Ukelele Ike Edwards tunes ("I'm a Bear in a Lady's Budoir" is great) and George Formby is very funny with his "Little Ukelele in His Hand", done before he cleaned himself up and got merely cute. There are two cuts that go beyond funny into the realm of the sublime. "I've Gone and Lost My Little Yo-Yo" by Billy Cotton and His Band is funny, coarse and sophisticated all at the same time. However, the really incredible, and fabulously politically incorrect highlight of the set is "Let's All Be Fairies" by the Durium Dance Band. People of all sexual proclivities will find it beyond hilarious. This is a wonderful collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2005-01-16

If you like comedy, sex and jazz (and who doesn't?) this is a must-have album.

Gertrude Lawrence's rendition of "The Physician" is worth the cost of the disc, but "Nellie tne Nudist Queen" is also brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funkiest of all-time R&B!.......2007-02-07

Chic's third album, this one released in 1979,had fans grooving and shaking their butts to GOOD TIMES. Logically, the CBS sitcom of the same title got the Nielsen axe that year. Two Chic members,Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards, wrote WE ARE FAMILY for Sister Sledge, also on hit parade in '79. Rogers and Edwards wrote a hit for another R&B band,Change, and in fact, that particular song was incorporated into one of Janet Jackson's recordings. The other songs are great!

Dancin' Feast

If CHIC'S earlier hits, "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)" and "Everybody Dance" were the appetizers, served in a savory hot sauce of funky bass lines and guitar hooks, and "C'est Chic" was their rich, meaty, piquant main course, then "Risque" could definitely be thought of as the sinfully indulgent dessert. What confection could possess more magical aphrodisiac qualities than the sensual and hypnotic "A Warm Summer Night?" And is there another song from the period that drips with more of the epicurean "Carpe diem" ethos punched up by the often-duplicated (and sampled) "Good Times"?

The triumvirate of the eponymous first album, "C'est Chic" and this album is a timeless chronicle of a sadly underappreciated group at their dead-level best.

And besides the unmistakable stamp of Rogers and Edwards, not enough credit can be given to the lilting voices of Alfa Anderson and Luci Martin, (not to mention the tightest backup singing section since the days of Motown, including a fast-rising vocalist named Luther Vandross); the late, great Tony Thompson's whip-crack drumming skills; the peerless keyboard work of not one but THREE great session vets: Raymond Jones, Robert Sabino and Andy Schwartz, and of course, the feather bed for the jewels, the CHIC Strings: Karen Milne, Valerie Haywood, Karen Karlsrud and Cheryl Hong.

Music would never again be this majestically sumptuous. To say that this album is a necessity for the rabid CHIC fan or lover of Seventies dance and pop, is pretty much overstating the obvious.

5 out of 5 stars So good it should illegal !.......2006-01-18

To this day,I am Chicfreak. To me their best three albums were "C'est Chic","We Are Family" and this one. You are probably saying "We Are Family"? that's by Sister Sledge.Well Sister Sledge sang it but Chic wrote it,produced it and everything that went with it.WAF is basically a Chic Album with SS singing lead on it.
Anyway,I was 11 when I first heard "A Warm Summer Night" on the flipside of the "Good Times" single.I thought anytime a flip is this good, the album must be hellified! And it was.Not only did the album contain the long version of "Good Times","A Warm Summer Night",but "My Feet Keep Dancing" and this was only the first side!
"My Forbidden Lover","Will You Cry" and "What About Me?" are on the other side.
This is prime USDA Chic at their peak. For some reason,Complilations of Chic music don't do it for me.I like the real stuff.

Because the industry tried to clone their sound,
Chic dissolved by the wayside after 1980.
But this album along with "C'est Chic" and "We Are Family" are living testament to Chic's greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Explicit lyrics?.......2007-05-31

I used to listen to these songs when I was a kid. For along time we didn't get the double meanings. When we eventually were told we laughed. It may have been explicit in the 40's and 50's, but today I'm surprised they don't jump rope to the songs in the playground. Even back in the 70's we took some of the songs to school and played them for our 7th grade teacher(after shool hours, of course) and she was delighted! I LOVE Ruth Wallis!

4 out of 5 stars The lady with the "wicked laugh" in her voice!.......2005-01-08

Nothing but delightful, soft-core fun here! It's a bit of a shame Ruth Wallis didn't record more things seriously as a singer since she had a beautiful, rich voice. She's vocally similar to legendary Alma Cogan at times - like Alma crossing the line of sassiness from some of her zanier work! Of course, in the "PC hysterical" world of today there are one or two tracks that couldn't be done on this collection any more...you know - "Good Holiday Spirit, Jack! Good Holiday Spirit to you, too!"

4 out of 5 stars When What Wasn't Said Was Sexier.......2004-08-24

Like many others, I first heard Ruth Wallis on Dr. Demento's radio show in the early 70's. It was broadcast live every Sunday in SoCal and forever warped my taste in music. (For that I will be eternally indebted to Barry "Dr. Demento" Hansen.) To hear more I had to scour thrift shops, cut-out bins, flea markets, and record conventions to find 78's and 45's with "Wallis Original" labels. THOSE are the very best of Ruth Wallis but, alas, no one has seen fit to reissue all those sides. This CD is about the best available. But if you don't own the originals, this is a great introduction to Ruth's tongue-in-cheek recordings.

Compared with the language used by some contemporary rappers, Ruth Wallis' risque innuendo seems squarely tame. Her lyrics are suggestive but never vulgar. She couldn't afford to be! When those records first came out, a person could go to jail for selling or owning "obscene" material. But lines like "Johnny's got the same little yo-yo" and "You've got to stay out of my pantry, mister" could have entirely innocent meanings. Of course, most everyone got the joke but there was an unspoken understanding among open minded adults.

Teasing the listener's imagination is far more stimulating than today's explicit lyrics. Ruth Wallis was a master of playful double entendre and that her recordings stand up well in this "Parental Advisory" era is testament to Ruth's talent. Listeners that haven't been pummeled into numbness by contemporary explicit language will find Ruth Wallis' wicked ditties delightfully naughty.

5 out of 5 stars Double Entendre Aplenty.......2004-01-21

I first head Ruth Wallis on the Dr. Demento show singing a song about Davy's Dinghy (it shows up in a number of songs). Recently I found this CD and decided to give it a try. I am very pleased.

Clear singing, good humor, excellent musicians all combine to create music you would listen to even if you weren't in it for the lyrics. The lyrics themselves are full of innuendo, suggestion and double entendres to beat the band. All together it makes for an excellent album that is fun to listen to over and over again.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD! A rare find! Go see.......2003-09-25

After winning tickets to go see the off-Broadway show "Boobs: the Musical", I was thrilled. Truly a great musical. Shortly afterwards, Ive searched for any Ruth Wallis CDs in major record stores and came up dry. Luckily, I found this great CD on amazon.com. I hope her other tracks will soon be released on CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best compilations of all time........2006-02-26

Great, great, great songs from the early R&B era of the late forties to the mid-fifties which were a little risque, to say the least. Some are well-known such as "Ten-Inch Record," "Sixty Minute Man," and "Work With Me Annie," but other cuts are rare and seldom heard. The songs are catchy, easy to dance to or sing to, and are hilarious.

My favorite songs on this CD are "Walk Right In, Walk Right Out," the classic fill-in-the-blanks number; "Mountain Oysters"; and, best of all, "Baby Let Me Bang Your Box." They don't make songs like this anymore, and they are timeless classics.

This CD belongs in every music lover's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Get out that big ten-inch!.......2005-05-07

This is a compilation of "dirty" R&B songs recorded from 1949 to 1954. This is an awesome CD. Really great old pre-rock-and-roll style R&B, with off color lyrics. Most of them are pretty funny, too. If you like REALLY "old school" R&B, you should get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty Ditties.......2003-11-16

Rhino Records does it again with this compilation CD of early rock & roll and blues artists. It's a shame that most of these artists died without receiving the recognition they deserve.

From "Big Ten-Inch Record" by Moose Jackson, the tune that sets the tone for the rest of the collection, to "(I Love To Play Your Piano) Let Me Bang Your Box" by The Toppers, you can't help but get the urge to merge.

"The Walkin' Blues (Walk Right In, Walk Right Out)" by The Jesse Powell Orchestra with Fluffy Hunter is a clever toe-tapping ditty and anyone who has heard any version of Dr. Demento's "Shaving Cream" can appreciate the tongue-in-cheek humor.

Allusions to homoeroticism are included with "Butcher Pete-Pt.1" by Roy Brown & His Mighty-Mighty Men (unfortunately, Part 2 isn't included on the disc) and "Mountain Oysters" by Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis with The Bill Doggett Trio. These references to homosexuality are more subtle than "Sissy Man Blues" on another compilation available here.

All the songs are ... suggestive but "Work With Me Annie" by The Royals wins the award for the one tune that puts you into the ... act itself. Listen to the rocking beat, especially the refrain, and tell me you don't believe yourself to be flowin' with the motion and movin' with the groovin.' The beat feels "so good, so good, so good, so good, so good" you know that song is directly responsible for making some babies.

Perhaps the most surprising to me was THE Dinah Washington crooning two sophisticated melodies, "Big, Long Slidin' Thing" and then she expresses her oral tendencies with "Long John Blues." And although I have heard of the name Wynonie Harris, I've never been exposed to his songs until listening to this CD and his two tracks, "Wasn't That Good" and "Keep On Churnin'" are songs to get you out of your clothes.

I don't claim to be a music scholar, so I won't go into a long dissertation about music structure or rhyme meter, but I think I can articulate my opinions well enough for people to decide. Sometimes, you need Nine Inch Nail's grinding "Closer", and then sometimes, less is more. In any case, "Risqué Rhythm: Nasty 50s R & B" delivers the goods from the music to the liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars R&B That makes you laugh as well as dance.......2002-02-09

This is some knee-slappin', gut-bustin', hee-haw, fall-down-on-the floor funny stuff that has a beat that you can dance to. If you're over 18 and hip to double-entendre and euphemisms, you'll roll with laughter and joy at songs like "Walkin' Blues," "Butcher Pete," "10 Inch Record," "Keep On Churnin," "I Love To Play Your Piano," etc. Modern rappers should listen to this to see that you don't have to blatantly curse to be funny. These songs are hilarious in what they leave to the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best off the wall R&B.......2000-05-24

This collection goes into the sleezier side of R&B. "Sixty Minute Man" is true bravado. " "Big Long Slidin Thing" has the same effect as "Baby Let Me Bang Your Box." Add "Big Ten Inch Record" and 14 others and you have one truely great set. Rhino, of course, does a good job of transferring these songs to a digital format. A good bang for your bucks.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly fun jump blues classics.......2001-05-23

This is one of the most enjoyable CDs I own. Unless you're completely humorless, you will laugh like crazy at some of the songs on this CD. As an added bonus, this is also one of the better collections of jump blues you can buy. It's not as good an introduction to the genre as the two Rhino "Jump Blues Classics" collections, but it has almost no overlap, so its a good companion volume. In any case, whether you're a fan of jump blues or you're just looking for some fun, un-PC music to get a party started, you will love this CD.

There are some relatively well-known tracks on here, such as Bull Moose Jackson's "Big Ten-Inch Record" (covered by Aerosmith), Billy Ward & The Dominoes' "Sixty Minute Man" (featured in the movie "Bull Durham"), and Dave Bartholomew's "My Ding-A-Ling", which was a big hit for Chuck Berry in the early 70's. There are also some terrific tracks from Wynonie Harris, including "Keep on Churnin' (Till the Butter Comes Out)", and good songs from Roy Brown such as "Boogie at Midnight". However, there are also some wonderful tracks that are probably not in print anywhere else, like The Swallows doing "It Ain't the Meat" or The Four Jacks doing "Sure Cure for the Blues."

Like other King rereleases, there's no recording session or songwriting information included. The liner notes aren't terribly informative, though they are definitely in the spirit of the music. Still, it's a terrific collection. If you like this one, be sure to check out Volume 2, which also has a bunch of classics.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS R & B ROCK n ROLL, MAN!!.......2004-09-26

It is a misnomer, in my view, to call these great songs "Blues". I mean, they ROCK! No sad "blues" stuff here. In the 50s, this type of heavy beat music was called "race music" by many.....The term Rythym and Blues came in years later. Call it whatever you wish, it is authentic, played and sung by the original artists and a real treat to the ears!

It is the stuff we listened to late at night when I was a teen in the mid west......we could pick up signal from WLAC in Nashville and hear Gene Nobles pitch the records from Randys Records. We'd buy the 78s, then play them for boogie dancing at parties......man, the teen queens loved it, too.

I recommend this CD for a good taste of the real thing!

      4 out of 5 stars It Ain't The Meat, It's The Motion.......2004-12-18

The "race" records of the 1920s often presented blues artists who specialized in double entendre lyrics--and although the lyrics were toned down over the years the genre itself became much beloved, albeit in an underground sort of way. One of several compilation CDs drawn from the vaults of King Records of Cincinnati and issued under the general title of Risque Blues, IT AIN'T THE MEAT offers a nice sampling of the style as it existed from the late 1940s through the early 1960s.

While there are one or two weak selections--"I Knew He Would" by The Sharps and Flats is a case in point--the two selections by the Swallows and Fluffy Hunter's truly wicked "Walkin' Blues" would be worth the nominal cost of this CD; add in "Shake That Thing" and "Wasn't That Good" by Wynonnie Harris and Lula Reed's driving "Your Love Keeps Working On Me" and you have a very fine package indeed. Strictly speaking, this is more rhymthm and blues than it is blues pure and simple, so if you're looking for the original hard edge you may be disappointed. Still, it's a lot of fun, and the sound quality is unexpectedly good. Recommended!
