I'm normally opposed to anything French due to my bad experience from living in the country for a year. However, I really enjoyed this CD. Every song is unique. Ms. Simon is great. I highly recommend it.

Emilie Simon is a multidisciplinary artist who is as comfortable composing the soundtrack for a movie (La Marche de L'Empereur) as she is exploring her sweetly mysterious inner world in exquisite electronic playgrounds.

"Sound of the Storm" is a vibrant edgy introduction to a world of exciting metaphors. The breathy "In the Lake" has a magical softness like feathers falling on powdered silk. "To the Dancers in the Rain" is sweet with a lullaby quality and dreamy lyrics:

"If my words are not that clear,
I know my heart is understanding,
Every little kiss of you..."

Many of the songs are like wild roses winding their way up castle walls and others are flower petals floating in watery worlds with electronic raindrops splashing into warm reverberations. "Dame de Lotus" is intoxicating in its intrigue. "Fleur de Saison" enters like pop song and then reaches ecstatic moments in places, almost buzzing. "Le Vieil Amant" is like a secret conversation that begins in whispers and concludes in a melodious fusion of sounds slipping over each other in romantic perfection.

Silky vocals and poetic lyrics embrace a finely layered musical exploration in French and English. I first heard her voice in "Desert" on the Sunnyside Café Series and this album expands into a lush richly textured garden of blossoming otherworldly atmospheres.

The images Emilie Simon paints in poetry made me feel like I had met a kindred spirit who was somehow visiting a similar magical land I've seen in my dreams and written about in poems. It is almost unbelievable that anyone could create so many perfect songs on one album, but each track keeps blossoming in a poetic perfection. The Flower Book is exquisite and dreamy sweet with an intricate electronica edge.

Oh what joy and happiness filled my heart when I saw that Emilie released an album filled with 17 songs. Such perfection. I love it and listen to it all the time. If you want a deal go over to itunes and download 17 songs for 9 dollars.

Emilie Simon's such a great singer/songwriter. Dark, yet soothing. Empty, yet emotional. All songs here are top-notch, even the cover of The Stooges' "I wanna be your dog" sounds intellectual. Must have.

I bought this album because it was suggested to my by a friend who lives in France. I was pleasantly impressed. Emilie uses very interesting instrumentation and a nice combination of mystery and emotion in her lyrics. Some are like lullabies and others more catchy like "Flowers" and "Blue Light". I would definitely suggest this album to anyone. Lyrics are included so it is easy to follow.

She has the baby voice of Vanessa Paradis, but her melodies are very different. I love the violins in some of her songs, also I love Flowers, very sweet but my favorite is Chanson, the last track. Now I have heard the whole album and I love love love it. A must get.

An unlikely favorite.......2004-10-24

I'll admit, I bought this album on a whim. A friend of mine--who, strangely, is into punk rock--recommended Emilie Simon to me after she had heard this CD playing at a friend's house. She thought that Emilie sounded quite similar to my favorite Japanese artist, Akino Arai. It was only for that reason I even remotely considered buying the album. I must say, my friend was right. The vocals are pretty similar in style and I even had good comparison material since Akino sings a few songs in French. So far, my favorite track is Lise with Il Pleut coming in at a close second. Anyway, I've never been much of a fanatic for the French language and I certainly don't nose about in this genre of music either. I'm more of a English/German/Japanese and Gothic/EBM/Industrial person. But even so, I'll definitely be watching for Emilie's future releases. The reason I only gave this a four is because there are a few tracks I wasn't too sure if I liked them or not, for example, I Wanna Be Your Dog. Sounds good and everything... just seemed a little strange to me. I still recommend this CD though.

Emilie Simon has one of the most beautiful voices i have ever heard combined with the french launguage and a brand of trip-hop, making a perfect combination. I tell ya I'd marry her just to hear her sing to me once in a while. I think its and overall good album, some songs I dont like as much as others, so I give it 4 stars just for being a debut album, and liking it so much...anybody into trip-hop should definetly check her out.

Such A Refreshing New Artist!.......2007-02-17

When I first heard Emilie Simon's single, "Le Fleur de Saison," I immediately knew that I had to know more about this artist and listen to more of her songs. I've listened to 2 of her albums...at first i was mixed about her sound, but now I just love it. Many people are noting how she's apparently influenced by Bjork, and indeed, you can tell she was and puts that "Bjorkesque" sound into her music, while still having her own unique musical abilitiy to shine through. What intrigues me about Emilie Simon's albums is how it seems as if she's still exploring her musical horizons through the English and the French language, which makes it even more fascinating to listen to her music! Thank God she has credibility in the USA and is slowly getting into the American music business...she's just a breath of fresh air. She seems so comfortable and in tune with singing english and french, being unique and quirky, but yet still marketable. I can't wait to see more from Emilie Simon!

She sing, write, compose, performe all sound and produce her albums... The sound & Univer of Emilie Simon is unique ! She records some strange song, and put it beautifully into music... I love: Opium, Never Fall In Love, Fluer de saison, Alicia, My Only Friend and En cendres, Annie and Le...Amant. The other tracks are almost unlistenable to me. I am happy she is back with a new album but I also feel like her first album is better than this one. All the tracks on her first album are wonderful.

If you have seen the movie "March of the penguins" and you loved the images and the music as much as I did, you're gonna love this album! It brings you back to the story of the movie and reminds you of the penguins.
Don't buy this album if you prefer to listen to Emilie Simons in French, since most songs are sang in English (some songs are without lyrics).

When I saw that this album had fifteen songs, I was so happy. But Emilie only sings on five songs! That's ridiculous. The rest are instrumental songs. You are wasting money on this album. And for forty dollars. Why is this album so much money? It's not worth it!

what a wonderful surprise!!!,emilie done soundtracks about the land of ice and its creatures.even if u have a flu,or allergic to all coldness of wintery nights,you'll warm to her lullabies.
some songs are instrumentals but i would love to think it more like emilie trying to capture the essence and spirits of all artic/antartica.think bjork,that stina girl and you'll get what i mean.
the lyrics are really poetic.if u are a fan of all non-mainstream or to nurse that irritating flu,this will do for warm winter darkness!

These are all exciting pieces, but those interested in the music of John Adams would probably do better to start elsewhere. It's hard to imagine a better recording of the Chamber Symphony than that by Ensemble Modern--if you're able to find it--and Fearful Symmetries is recorded on the same Nonesuch Records disc as Adams' essential orchestral song 'The Wound-Dresser.'

The 'Four Songs,' from the song-play 'I Was Looking at the Ceiling and then I Saw the Sky,' are masterpieces of American text-setting. To hear them sung with thick French accents is positively unheimlich. The songs are definitely worth a listen, and the Nonesuch recording of 'Ceiling/Sky' is a little lifeless, but "A Sermon on Romance" (for example) is performed so superbly on that disc that this rendition is agonizing by comarison. Likewise, 'Christian Zeal and Activity,' not one of Adams' most memorable pieces in the first place, is seriously overshadowed by the recording on Nonesuch Records, on which it is paired with more interesting and popular pieces than these.

Though I must point out: any Adams completists out there should take note of "The Earthquake"--this is the first available recording of this music. It's a very interesting "rock-instrumental" style movement from 'Ceiling/Sky' that was not included on the Nonesuch disc.
