3 out of 5 stars Neither Circus nor Spectacular, but it is Karl King........2006-10-15

Having played a number of times under Karl King, I had great expectations for this CD. Alas, it was not to be. The music is there, the musicians play all the right notes and the conductor keeps time. The recording is only mediocre, of Laserlight quality, and the performance is not what I expected from what they call a "Circus Band." Indeed, the liner notes state that the band is mostly students and professionals from the Philadelphia area. In other words, a "pick up" band. And the conductor seems to have no circus experience only small town symphony experience (from the puffery in the liner notes). From listening, it would appear that he has never even heard a real circus band. Both conductor and band would not last a day at a real circus. I do have a suspicion, however, that the musicians would do better under a better conductor.

Now, if they called themselves a concert band, that would be accurate and fair, and would not have dashed my hopes, as they are OK as a concert band. But just OK.

Of course, a concert band can indeed generate all the excitement of a bona fide circus band, as Frederick Fennell so aptly demonstrated on his Mercury recordings.

Now, if you want real circus music played by a real circus band, get a Merle Evans recording.

However, having said all that, I will keep the album, as I have always been a Karl King fan, and it is fine music decently played by an OK concert band.

5 out of 5 stars Great circus music.......2005-08-12

I needed some circus music to promote a fundraiser our Lion's club was having (a circus). I got the CD on time and it sounded great. I could not find this type of music anywhere else. Thanks.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, mediocre playing.......2001-11-19

It was indeed exciting to find so many of Karl King's marches on one disc. The band's playing, however leaves a lot to be desired, as does the sound quality of the disc. The balance is poor, with a very annoying tenor sax playing loud and out-of-tune on every cut. Buy this if you are a march collector (which I am), but I do not recommend it for its entertainment value. Get the "Screamers" disc by Fennell and Eastman for a far superior set of circus marches with great playing and sound.

4 out of 5 stars Review of Circus Spectacular.......2000-12-07

Certainly the best thing about this CD is that there are many of Karl King's marches that have probably never been recorded previously, which is curious, since some of them rank with his best. The curious thing about this CD, on the other hand, is that it is supposedly a circus album, but only a few marches were actually written for the "big top". This band is not the best I have heard - recommend listening with headphones, to get a much clearer, less muddled sound. King was only kind of a contemporary of Sousa, having lived 35-40 years later. He actually published more marches than Sousa, and generally wrote in a style that was "softer" than the March King. Sousa wrote mostly military-style marches (better than anyone else ever has, of course), whereas King wrote many military as well as circus marches, and marches in a simpler style, suitable for school bands.

5 out of 5 stars Circus Spectacular.......2000-08-12

This recording of music by Karl King is absolutely splendid -it contains 28 tracks most of which I have certainly not heard before - I particularly liked the tempos of the marches - not too quick but just right - the band is good (although I had never heard of them) - I came across this recording by chance and I'm glad I did - highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars I can't give a title that doesn't sound exaggerated.......2007-03-31

While continuing their James Hilton theme (I still need to read some of his works), FODM departs a bit from the remarkably well-flowing, "concept album" feel of both On the Shore and Random Harvest to deliver us a more diverse collection of tunes. We get the power and grandeur of "Landfall", the space-rock of "Heart of Darkness", the sweeping beauty of "Somewhere Over the Waves", the desert relaxation of "Two Hundred Miles", and an acoustic reworking one of my all-time favorite songs "Dusk" (from Random Harvest); they even give us a couple of lounge pieces, "Departure" and "All in the Golden Afternoon", that you would expect to hear on Retrograde or Artardecer.
But don't worry, through all the changing moods FODM are still able to pack more atmosphere and emotion into every song than most bands can pack into a career's worth of albums.

5 out of 5 stars Best record yet!.......2006-01-10

The band just gets better and better. This record is a bit different from the others as it is decidedly more "jammy." But not in the wanky Phish kind of way, more like the Thelonius Monk kind of way. Jam with a direction. Furthermore, Bill Elm's steel takes a bit of a rest while Mike Semple covers an array of different guitar tones and styling all over the record. The melodies are at their greatest on this record. It's a beautiful and painful record. I am always surprised how much emmotion FoDM can express in the absence of lyrics...especially concidering the sad state of lyrical prowess in indie music today.

Lost Horizon is a soundtrack to whatever you want it to be. It evokes arid desert dreams and congures an imagination that usually goes underutilized.

Lost Horizon is a wonderful record. It really showcases who the kings of instrumental rock are. (Ackem! Explosions in the Sky Ahckem!)

Buy this record. You won't be disappointed because it's really good. That's all you need to know.

5 out of 5 stars A real treat - ANOTHER 2005 album from FODM.......2005-12-11

Lost Horizon continues FODM's "new" direction, and in my opinion it's a real breakthrough. The earlier-era lonesome spaghetti-western sound is long gone (although the recent Live at Club 2 features some great renditions of those earlier songs), and has been replaced with more ambitious songwriting and experimentation. Whereas their earlier releases used to feature mostly Bill Elm and his amazing console lap steel, this latest offering is all about Mike Semple's outrageously underrated guitar playing, and the band gels into a much more cohesive sound as a result. "Somewhere Over The Waves" is an organ-based mood piece that is FODM at their haunting best, one of those songs (like A Place In the Sun's "Broken Bell") that you wish was twice as long as it is. "Two Hundred Miles" has a fine sounding acoustic guitar, "Dawn" features an evocative nylon-string, and "All In the Golden Afternoon" is as expansive and epic as you can get. Only "Heart of Darkness" swerves into the cacaphony that (I think) mars some of their stuff; but the new version of Random Harvest's "Dusk" seems more fully realized somehow. The last piece, "Departure," harkens back to the band's earlier style, almost as a farewell. It's a great way to close the album. The vast majority of this album is beautiful and disquieting, and is by far my favorite since "On the Shore."

5 out of 5 stars Jean Michel Jarre at his finest!!!.......2007-04-01

I personally have always liked Jean Michel Jarre since I heard Oxygen come out back in the 70's... but this CD/DVD just proves that he just keeps getting better! Yes, there are only 3 new tracks on this album... but it is much more than that. He found a way to remix & remaster in 5.1 surround sound the new tracks along with a mix of the ones from the past. They are updated and have a much more modern style to them... but the CD overall is very well orchestrated and enjoyable. Going from Oxygen to Equinox, Magnetic Fields to Chronology... the mix and arrangement is excellent! If you appriciate his style... you will not be dissapointed in this collection at all. The CD also comes along with a DVD that has the bonus Eyes Video going the entire time you listen to it. It is in Region 2/PAL format... but I had no problem playing it on my Westinghouse HDTV DVD player. If you are lucky enough to obtain a copy of this... you will not be dissapointed!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jarre strikes again!.......2006-11-07

This album really only has 3 new tracks on it (Aero, Aerology, and Aerozone) all of which are variations of other stuff he did previously. The rest of the tracks are updated versions of previous material beef-up and used in the Aero concert tours. But they're still great with a face lift. In fact, some are better!. The variations are - well - variate enough that they ended up being their own pieces in their own right in his body of work. This album has JMJ stamped all over it - from opening note to ending pad. Personally, the DVD visuals did nothing for me, but that's okay because I was in it for the DTS 5.1 experience which made me shiver. Yeah, it's really THAT good. Sound in 3D! Be advised that the DVD is (unlike what Amazon posted) a Region 2/PAL disc (NOT Region 0/NTSC).

5 out of 5 stars Electronic State Of Mind.......2006-06-29

Yes I am a good fan of Jean Michel Jarre.I recently ordered this disc back in Dec.When I recieved it like other reviews I read The DVD is region 2.PAL How sad for me.But even though I support the dts playback Ill have to wait till I purchase a HD player maybe european type model that will open the menu and I can enjoy the dvd.To stay on topic here The music is atmosphericlly ,spacy really wonderful. I love the open intro.of Oxygene. How it moves to the next tracks evenly. I love the piece of the coal miners when you hear the part of the people talking when the miners are going off to work. The whole cd I must say tells a story.Theres a real story behind this music. No matter how electronic sounding it is. The musician blends alot of styles and rhythems to his playing. I highly recomend this music. So for now Ill enjoy the super cd sound of it on my region 1 NTSE player.

4 out of 5 stars Very good package, worth the $$.......2006-06-07

Frankly, I'm surprised by the negative responses to the visual part of this program. The expressive eyes that stare out at the veiwer as the music plays makes for a very interesting counterpart to the emotions the music stirs-up. I suppose people would prefer the usual music videos or whathaveyou...?
The 5.1 mix is very clear and defined, although it seems slightly too "busy"-- that is, the sound mix flies around and around in an attempt to (over)use every channel. A bit more restraint and inventive use of the rear channels might have produced a more interesting sound mix, in my opinion.

The lack of decent new material drops this down a "star" for me. Otherwise, a great compilation, wonderful background music.

NOTE - I purchased this on AMAZON and have used it on 2 DVD players AND an XBox-- it worked fine on all 3 systems.

1 out of 5 stars Good Jean, but the video is crap !!!.......2006-03-05

Don't waste your time, the music is Jean Michel as ever, but the video is only two eyes (what idiot thing) all time. This eyes makes me crazy and I think only one think: put this DVD in trash.

Run away from this DVD as fast as possible.

Ah, new album by Jean Michel Jarre, spiced by different sound source types (my stereophones loves it too).

I'm not so sensitive by the eyes on white background; they reminds the eyes of mine beloved wife so I positive about such a visial bonus.

Such kind of music may not attract crowds while playing in a backyard but as a relax or work music is a perfect companion.

I love everything Jarre do. I trust him. He can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars NOW THIS IS SWING!!!.......2003-12-02

This si the ray anthony we all know and love!!! A great cd of energetic swing msuic, I know I'm 16 and a big time swing dancer, I'm very energetic and this cd does it for me even more than Brian Sether! A great swing lindy hop cd.

3 out of 5 stars Not In the Groove.......2003-07-07

Many of Ray Anthony's big band recordings, including this CD, don't really hit the groove. This cd contains a number of arrangements that were part of the Count Basie book.
It's reasonably enjoyable to listen to and there is a fine array of studio musicians doing this album but emotionally it didn't do a thing for me. If you like big band that's not offensive, this would be a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Big Band at its Best!.......2001-01-12

Terrific arrangements with tons of innovation. Some of the best ensemble work you'll hear anywhere. That is the highlight of the CD for my money. Anthony's horn is still throaty and sometimes downright "dirty". 2 vocals by Dennis Rowland are more than adquate. A very listenable..and danceable if you're inclined...collection. If you're a big band fan, you'll love this CD.

2 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS NOT THE BIG BAND ALBUM YOU THINK........1999-02-27

I AM A FAN OF RAY ANTHONY SO I HAD HIGH HOPES FOR THIS CD. AS IT TURNS OUT THIS IS NOT A BIG BAND ALBUM BUT A JAZZ ALBUM. THE SONGS LISTED COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT BIG BAND SONGS BUT NOT AS THEY APPEAR HERE.

5 out of 5 stars Will Bradley : Five O'Clock Whistle Buy it and have a Ball!.......2003-07-01

I first heard of Will Bradley, when I was 13 and learned from promotional material that Will Bradley played a King 2B trombone (I ended up buying a Bach 42B which I continue to play today in a number of local amateur groups here in my home town, but that is another story!).

The next time I heard of Will Bradley was while reading a Jazz History, learning that he had a central role in helping English Band Leader and Composer Ray Noble organize an American Dance Band in the mid 1930s featuring the era's finest musicians.

The next time I heard of Will Bradely was while reading the writings of one-time Downbeat Swing Era columinst George T. Simon, who quoted Glenn Miller in an article as saying that Will Bradley was the best all-around Trombonist in America at the time of the article's penning.

Well, I then next spent over thirty years looking for a record or CD so I could see for myself if Will Bradley was deserving of such praise. Well, after listening to this album, all I can see is I understand why Glenn Miller felt the way he did (he was not a musician to praise his peers so unreservedly). As a trombonist, if there is one thing I would say about Will Bradley, it would be intelligent, ultra accomplished trombonist. This CD is a showcase for his smooth jazz playing, with its exceptionally clean technique, fire, and solid even sound from high to low range.

Former Henry Mancini Trombonist, Jazz musician and trombone balladeer extraordinare Dick Nash has been quoted as saying that Bradley played with a cleaniness, and precision that was unrivalled among trombonists of his time. While I would argue that another great trombonsit of the era Jack Jenny came close, I would agree that Nash is right in placing Bradley "in his own league".

Will Bradley was cleary a trombonist of superior skill with an impecable ability to play a line that explored the idomatic moment in which it was being played to the maximum without ever going too far. To say it clearly, Will Bradley was an imaginative musician and trombonist with surperior musical taste, possesing skill and control that just was not heard often over the course of the era of the great bands. Every solo on this CD is a pure joy!

Of greater surprise is the quality of the band and its other soloists. There are hard driving and stylish trumpet solos from Joe Weidman, some great Freddie Slack Boogie Woogie piano, not enough clarinet solo work by Jo-Jo Huffman, as well as tenor sax solo work featuring a very young "Peanuts" Hucko (likely his first recorded solo work) and the solid drumming of the frantic and quirky Ray Mackinnley. Each solist produces great musical moments that seem to mirror their leader's smooth and stylish approach to playing a musical line.

But even more surprising and a real joy is the great ensemble work of the band and its members. Despite some occasionally cliched sounding arrangements, the band as a whole rises above their musical circumstances producing recordings that sound just as fresh and new today. It is just great listening!

I really was surprised with how good this CD was and even after listening to it as many times as I have, it continues to sound fresh and new. Ordinally I would be reluctant to lavish such praise on a CD, but in this case, it deserves it.

Buy this CD today; you won't regret it! You'll enjoy the pleasure of discovering a trombonist who just didn't earn the lasting fame enjoyed by his peers such as Tommy Dorsey. You'll have a ball!

Please just go and buy a Glenn Miller CD, but please don't buy this, who needs Ray Anthony to cover waht Miller already did so perfectly. Yhis is anynamous swing at it's worst. If you are lame and in a lame mood buy this.

4 out of 5 stars Odd concept but successful execution..........2002-06-19

Mr. Anthony, a fine musician, and his orchestra perform classic songs in the style of Glenn Miller. The gimmick is that Mr. Miller never recorded any of these in his lifetime. In fact, many were not written yet at the time of his death in WWII. So a fan might wonder "Had Glenn lived, would he have chosen these songs, and would he have played these arrangements? I can't answer the questions. I can say, however, that if what you are interested in is true "easy listening" big band music, this disc is a winner. Some great songs are included: "So Rare" and "Twilight Time" and "Up a Lazy River" and "Through the Eyes of Love" and "Day by Day." I'm not a player, but the performances seem fine to my ear. Until I obtained this item, I had not heard a Ray Anthony album in about 40 years. It was nice to spend some time within the scope of his artistry. This collection is pleasant, not bold; "pop" rather than jazzy, and yet it isn't boring. It will hold up well to repeated listening.

5 out of 5 stars in the miller mood.......2001-11-09

If you like Glenn Miller and Harry James, you will with out a doubt like this recording. The arrangements are superb along with the musicians. It is a blend between the two orchestras noted above with the technology of modern recording.

5 out of 5 stars On Longer Exposure ---.......2001-10-19

OK! I goofed. My previous review was so-so. But, after listening
for a long time and comparing to the Dream Dancing series, I find
this to be the best Ray Anthony set I've heard. It's become my favoriter CD.

The arrangements are just wonderful. The section work is absolutely superb. It swings!!! It makes you want to dance.

      Ray

4 out of 5 stars Too Bad the recording isn't as good as Dream Dancing.......2001-09-01

The tempos are wonderful and I agree with others on Anthony's
trumpet. But the sound is not as good as the Dream Dancing CD.
Just a bit flaky, but listenable.
