Two of the most revered producers and remixers of the French Invasion, Phillipe Zdar and Hubert Blanc-Francard more than have the skills to toss off crates of jiggy dance product if they so desired. But on their debut as Cassius, they've created something very different, a seamlessly postironic piece of abstract hip-house that's so off-kilter and fun, it feels subversive. Subtle gospel samples and a bluesy '30s trumpet bring on the opener, "Cassius 1999," then flip it into a flashy Latin electro super-digitale, and it's a good clue to where this whole thing wants to go. Thus we find plus-sized freestyle bass lines blithely slung under the vit-vit of old-school acid or a hard-house shuffle invaded both by toony synth arpeggios and liquid cobalt washes à la Richard James. Somehow, Cassius make it all cook. 1999 more than lives up to its unreasonable advance hype--a gorgeous and surprisingly restrained showcase for two visionaires. --Steve Lafreniere

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Like the Black Crowes themselves, the greatest-hits collection A Tribute to a Work in Progress hearkens back to the good old days of best-of collections: you get a bunch of songs you've probably heard on the radio a million times and that's it. These are arguably the group's best songs, but there are no unreleased outtakes or remixes to force rabid collectors to purchase the disc for the sake of two songs. This straightforward document of a straightforward band is also the best entryway to the group's fabulous, swaggering, ballsy, bluesy rock & roll--that is, next to their 1992 breakthrough, Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. While arranged chronologically, what one hears here is the Atlanta-based group playing great, unpretentious Stones-, Faces-, and Zep-influenced rock. This music was made for pure, visceral enjoyment, so play it really loud and dance around. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Prince's fifth album came right before the lascivious multi-instrumentalist became a huge star with his 1984 film and soundtrack, Purple Rain. But Prince had already proved himself to be the most audacious talent to emerge in the 1980s, and 1999, the bulk of which features Prince on all the instruments, reflects the dance-rock styles that he also brought to the acts he produced, particularly the Time. Prince knows how to run a one-man-band individual instruments don't blend together as much as they compete in a funky showdown which allows tracks like "Automatic," "D.M.S.R.," and "Delirious" to sustain their long playing times. But the album's two enduring hits, "1999" and "Little Red Corvette," outshine the rest, and define the essential roles that rock and funk play in Prince's music. "Little Red Corvette" is a sexy song about a car, which would have been enough to make it a terrific rock song even if it didn't also boast an infectious chorus and a great guitar part. As for "1999," count on it being the dance song of the millennial year. --John MilwardCustomer Reviews:
1999... Legacy cemented.......2007-07-13
Prince unlike Michael Jackson has not struggled to reinvent himself, because Prince has been constantly experimenting with new sounds and new ways to create his masterpieces.
It is hard to believe that 1999 preceded Purple Rain, but did an incredible job teasing the world's appetite for more of the "Purple One"
This is a must have for any R&B collection and any run of the mill Prince fan!
Great Album, that should live in the history books of music for decades to come!
Pure Genius!.......2007-05-13
I adore Prince and admire him for his God-given musical talent and his self-confidence. There is something to be said for a person who can write a number one hit overnight AND play all of the instruments on that number one hit (When Doves Cry from the Purple Rain CD). Not only is he one of the most forward-thinking musicians of all time, he is, without question, THE most talented musician in pop history. He is also the sexiest musician I have ever seen. I thought that when I saw him in concert in 1986 in England, in the movies Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon and still think it today, over 20 years later, when he performed the half-time show for Superbowl XLI. Even now, in my 40s, when I watch his movies I get chills just listening to him sing and scream. To meet him would be a 20+ year dream come true for me.

1999: With out question or comment...10/10
Little Red Corvette: There should be no skipping. This is a jam, and everyone should appreciate how significant this is...10/10
Delirious: Cheesy keyboard, sexual lyrics, and amazing delivery..10/10
Let's Pretend We're Married: Well it runs about 7:50, but it has an irresistable groove that gives this one the title of one the best ignored singles that prince released...10/10
D.M.S.R: Party...9/10
Automatic: A-U-T-O-matic, not hardley it runs for about 9:00, it is still very good...9/10
Something in the Water: Weird song that would, I guess, inspire what would become Computer Blue. This one is like many of Prince's songs, why you done me wrong? and he doesn't understand...10/10
Free: Cheesiest song of all time! 80's vintage sounding song about the world...10/10
Lady Cab Driver: This one has so many hooks that you can't get your head around it....10/10
All the Critics Love U in New York: No Comment
International Lover: Very appropriate ending to this album...10/10
Prince is just amazing!.......2007-01-11
The album is purely 80s era and during this period The Purple One heavily wrote dance and party numbers that have kept fans like me begging for more. Dance, Music, Sex, Romance aisdes from the longevity of the track and the thumping bass line it is a hell of a track to jam to. If you purchase this album, you won't regret it. This is a classic for those who like to party and dance. I believe that this album is worth every cent while, also making you come back for more from The Purple One.

For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Beethoven is an insect compaired to this titian of composition........2007-07-18
Once I started paying attention to the music and identifying different pieces that I enjoyed from different movies, I was suprized to realize that John Williams had composed many, many of them.
This CD contains possibably the greatest most timeless music I have heard. Sure, you, like my classical music loving boss, have probably already written off my opinion as foolish or ignorant. Honestly, I don't care.
I like Mozart, Bach and the rest, and they have their place, but their music doesn't move through me like Williams. While this collection is far from a box set of his work, all the most popular pieces are there: Raders March (Indiana Jones), Star Wars, Superman, Empire March (Darth Vader). None of the operas or preludes the other guys made up generate the experience I get from listening to the opening stanza of Superman.
While it is very hard to sing along to these pieces, if you have an office as I do, it makes great background music. Everyone who comes in is pleasently caught off guard and I enjoy watching them trying to place the various songs that are playing.
Even if you disagree that Williams is better than Wagner or Debussy, if you enjoy his music, you will love this CD. "These are the droids you are looking for."
An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15
Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".
Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".
The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.
There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.

Sarah Michelle Gellar may be saving the world from vampires but her TV show is also helping a few worthy bands get some much needed exposure. Dayton, Ohio's ridiculously prolific Guided by Voices lead things off with the playful "Teenage FBI," a strong distillation of the band's knack for the irrepressible hook. The all-femme Hepburn protest in true "Maggie's Farm" fashion (as in "I ain't gonna work on...") for the quickstepping, bubble-gum punk-pop of "I Quit." Bif Naked's arena anthem "Lucky" is perfect for staring at candles. Garbage are in suitably psychedelic glam shades for "Temptation Waits." Rasputina, the gothic cello ensemble, include the appropriate "Transylvania Concubine." The only misstep is from virtual old-timers the Sundays, who deliver a lazy-day version of the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses." But this is made up for with the inclusion of Nerf Herder's "Buffy" theme song and Christophe Beck's instrumental theme music, which round out this all-inclusive collection. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:

listen and relive your favorite buffy moments with a wide variety of songs from the show, from the upbeat theme song to the slow romantic" Wild horses" played during buffy and angels prom dance-would definatley recommend!
Compendium of music from Buffy and some of the best music of the 90's.......2006-02-05
There are, of course, a few exceptions, the most obvious being the show's theme by Nerfherder and "Close Your Eyes", which is the Buffy/Angel love theme. The latter has always been one of my favorites, as I can almost feel what Buffy is going through when she realizes she must kill her dearest love in order to save the world at the conclusion of "Becoming Part 2". Another song that brings back memories of Buffy and Angel's tortured romance is "Wild Horses", which is playing as the two dance together at the prom, both knowing that Angel is leaving town soon and this is their last chance to have any kind of normal moment together. "Lucky" recalls the episode "The Harsh Light of Day" when Buffy allows herself to be seduced by aspiring Lothario and fellow college student Parker Abrams. I've always been intrigued by "Transylvania Concubine", which is the quirky and memorable tune playing during Drusilla's "coming out" party in the episode "Surprise".
The remainder of the songs did not really provide any emotional cues for me as did these five that I have mentioned, but they are still a good collection of lively music from the 90's that I consider to be a worthy purchase.
Must Have for REAL Buffy Fans.......2006-01-29

It's easy to see why You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown is so popular. With its simple set and small cast, it has become a staple of high-school drama and small-scale productions all over America. Of course, this doesn't necessarily translate into a grandiose Broadway show, but this Michael Mayer-directed production is enjoyable. Anthony Rapp (Rent) plays an effective Charlie and Ilana Levine's Lucy is fun. The lively "Snoopy" number (Roger Bart plays the canine's role) is the musical's highlight, but such tunes as "Beethoven Day" really date the musical. Some may find it simplistic; others will love it. Which probably makes it a lot like the "Peanuts" comic strip itself. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:
Laugh-out-loud.......2007-04-03
Get a copy of this revival cast recording. It's really worth it. For your whole family. Hilarious and great musical score. One of the best family musicals.
What's the difference between the 1967 Original Broadway production of YAGMCB and the 1999 Revival?
The characters that is presented in the original stage production has been maintained, but a new perspective has been added. The new cast of six characters includes Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Schroeder, Snoopy and Sally Brown (she replaces Patty.) The original twelve songs all remain in this version, and two new songs: Beethoven Day (Schroeder & Company) and My New Philosophy (Sally with Schroeder) have been added. Some of the underscoring music was also replaced (Lucy's Queen Lucy and Snoopy's Red Baron). The music and the dialogue has also been reworked.

A really cute show.......2006-08-05
ilana lavine's voice is, i admit, little short of a screech, but it's only annoying because in the songs with the whole cast, you can tell she has a beautiful voice normally. for those who were complaining that her songs are unlistenable, it isn't that bad and it's part of lucy's character.
my favourite songs are 'you're a good man, charlie brown' and 'happiness'. they both have an underlying message that makes the CD worth listening to for adults as well as children. 'for happiness is anyone and anything at all that's loved by you...' how true is that? definitely buy either this or the off-broadway cast recording, but this CD has a more definite beat and rhythm and is wonderful to listen to.
Great Broadway show for families.......2006-07-14
This is a good CD for anyone wishing to introduce their kids to Broadway. My girls and I sing to it in the car all the time! Due to the low overhead as far as sets and costumes are concerned, this show is performed frequently in community/regional theatres around the country. I highly recommend taking your kids to see it, and you'll enjoy it also.

A Straight Thuggin' CD...............2007-07-16
"Down 71" starts with Bizzy Bone at trial. He is reflecting on how he got there and this track is full of action & violence, ghetto style! "The Bill Collector" can be said to get what is owed, on the real tip! Don't test BT&H or there will definitely be consequences. I love the homage to the underground on this! "Budsmokers Only" is a tokin' tune with the homies, it's all about smoking, the taste, the feeling, everything! (Check out any Kottonmouth Kings) "Crossroads" is the signature song here, how fitting it's at the middle of the CD. I guess this is all about finding yourself through reflections of your actions, whether good or bad. Keep prayin' brothers! "Me Killa" is poetic in verse, short, but to the point of being a straight, ruthless dealer!
"Land Of Tha Heartless" is about survival in Cleveland! Watch your back, is the clear message here, there's no place to run! "No Shorts, No Losses" can be said to let people know that these cats never want to get cheated or else! Whether it be drugs, or favors, if a double cross happens, it's time for someone to pay! "1st Of The Month" is a smooth party groove, Everyone's paid and it's time to get that party on. Grillin', Chillin, Stylin', and Profilin' it's that time to relax, hang, and smoke with the homies! "Buddah Lovaz" is silky smooth jam, only for the smokers, but the way they sang it, it makes me want to get laid for real! LOL! I guess you would call this a love song!
"Die Die Die" is a song I cant comprehend too much, accept for the fact that in the send they get got my the cops! "Mr. Ouija 2" is an obvious continuation of Ouija off the Creepin' Ah Come Up EP, Just trying to get insight on a murder about to happen. "Mo Murda" is segued from Ouija 2, but the actual act, based on what was told by the ouija! It's painted picture of how the ghetto is, when the game is involved. "Shotz To Tha Double Glock" rounds out this tale about taking care of business, protecting your hood and your homies is what it's about! Sort of a "Thuggalo" family (LOL! I use that reference because I am a die hard juggalo and I know ICP and Bone Thugs are tight!)
This Cd is straight gangsta for real. I mean it's subtle and to the point, honest, and real! If you ask me this is more prolific than Tupac, and very raw!! An excellent CD by Bone Thugs & Harmony!!!!

Love, trust, and loyalty are themes shared by The Best Man's script and the soundtrack. Instead of a hodgepodge of inspirational songs, the album carries a story that parallels that of the film (all but two of the tracks appear in the movie). Near the beginning, Maxwell's sultry voice warns a lover to keep things truthful on "Let's Not Play the Game," arguably the disc's sexiest track. After the damage is done, Faith Evans aggressively justifies infidelity on the upbeat "Best Man." The mood-setting "Turn the Lights Down Low," a studio-engineered duet between Lauryn Hill and the late Bob Marley, leans toward physical and emotional reconciliation. While the soundtrack may not be enough to comfort a groom whose best man has slept with his bride, The Best Man is full of heartfelt soul. --Celine WongCustomer Reviews:
Very nice soundtrack by a great movie.......2007-06-25
Hip-hop/ R&B's reigning queen, Lauryn Hill teams up with the late Bob Marley on a beautifully redone track of "Turn Your Lights Down Low." Introspective and controversial rap group The Roots start off the album with their upbeat "What You Want", and the very soulful Maxwell contributes two new tracks to the album, "Let's Not Play the Game" and "As My Girl." Eric Benet`s "Poetry Girl" is very nice along with Latocha Scott's "The Girl is Hot." Though the love infused ballads and sultry R&B cuts are enough to keep the record on top. "The Best Man" has its low points. The Sporty Thieves' "Hit It Up" seems to be misplaced in the ocean of love songs, and "The Best Man I Can Be", which teams up Ginuwine, Tyrese, R.L., and Case, is a musty, ill-fated anthem for men with morality. I was also slightly disappointed that they didn't have the Stevie Wonder's "As" and Cameo's "Candy." But I got over it.
However, "The Best Man" is able to hold its weight and hits hard with passion and love.
I would get this if not see the movie which I highly recommend but I think you should do both to really understand everything. If you listen to the lyrics of some of the songs they really match some of the characters in the story. Like Faiths song "Best man." She takes the place of the The girl who got married in the movie and you know it when she says......"He is your best man, I guess you didn't know that I had him, I know that you hate that, but it's like that, you are the best but yet he ain't so bad". I won't say more than that.
Other than that this soundtrack is one of the best and strongest soundtracks that had drop in 99'. It almost reminds me of the "Soul Food" album. I guess because the movies are similar in there own way and they both give out great and memorable songs. Once you hear this you'll definitely add this too your collection.
Not bad at all, for a soundtrack * * * . 5 stars.......2007-06-08
Maxwell, Eric Benet and Kenny Lattimore have some good tracks and Faith Evans's Best Man..I think is her best up tempo track...the Lauryn Hill Bob Marley track is good also....so check this cd out.

Although Woody Allen has been using jazz from the '20s and '30s on his soundtracks since Sleeper, Sweet and Lowdown is his first movie featuring the musicians of the period. The story is about Emmett Ray, who is a brilliant guitarist but is always being unfavorably compared to Django Reinhardt. Allen hired the guitarist Howard Alden and the Dick Hyman Group to play the music of Ray and his band, and they have done an excellent job of recreating the small band swing of the '30s. Alden has assimilated the music of such guitarists as Eddie Lang, Karl Kress, and Django to create a guitar style that is unique yet also sounds thoroughly authentic. He is the Zelig of guitar players. This music has all of the excitement of '30s jazz with none of the stodginess that sometimes plagues other jazz revivalists. --Michael SimmonsCustomer Reviews:
