3 out of 5 stars No Fistful of Ennio.......2007-01-31

Ennio Morricone wrote great soundtrack music, that's for certain. But no retrospective of his work is complete without the inclusion of more than one lone example from the three mid-60's "spaghetti westerns" he scored for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. Anyone familiar with the UNITED ARTISTS label LPs of "Fistful Of Dollars," "For A Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" might agree with this.

As for what's here-- most of ENNIO MORRICONE * FILM MUSIC Volume 1 is forgettable incidental stuff. Except for "The Battle Of Algiers (Theme)," the opening and closing tracks are the best. They bookend what turns out to be a disappointing collection, lacking in both liner notes and the brilliance Morricone demonstrated over a 30 year span.

5 out of 5 stars I would call some of these pieces "newage"..........2006-08-02

Moscow Farewell is definitely my pick of the lot. Sacco And Vanzetti was a pleasant surprise once I listened to it a couple of times. It is lively and could be played on a wedding dance floor for the whole family. This is great album to listen to while in bed!

5 out of 5 stars Simply a 'Must Purchase' for those with a passing interest in Morricone's work.......2005-09-13

Arguably one of the greatest (if not the greatest) Film composer of the 20th Century. Not only has he scored some of the most influential and instantly recognisable pieces of film music during his roughly 50 years of composing atmospheric film scores. Whether he's providing the spooky dramatics for a spaghetti Western" or constructing the ingenious use of classical arrangements of brooding cinematic pieces, he has (in most cases) consistently delivered contemporary music that has provided the atmospheric foil for the picture in question. And with a collection of musical influences that were as far ranging as: classical, jazz, pop, rock, electronic, avant-garde, and Italian music, he is able to deliver a variety of film scores that are as diverse as they are beautifully composed.

This compilation is collection of some of the seminal, gritty, theatrical, and dramatic film music, that would go on to define his career, via reflective orchestration and memorable motifs, ingenious use of diverse arrangements and instrumentation. There is a majority of his highlights on this disc, with the magnificently brooding "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" opening the disk. what follows is a truly sublime collection of music that is in parts truly beautiful and utterly atmospheric, so tracks such as "Once Upon A Time In The West", benefit from the haunting melodies and stirring volins, that are possibly more in tone with orchestrated music than contemporary music. Or the quiet piano introspection and melancholic arrangements that make up "Moscow Farewell", are simply deserving of being placed amongst the finest soundtrack compositions ever. "Dedicace", contains some of the most litting melodies in recent memory, impossibly sad and affecting, it is a haunting bittersweet composition that is both organic & reflective, over which the volins provide the musical backdrop. And that's without the mention of "For Love One Can Die", the autumnal orchestrated track, that pulls from Italian sweeping gangster original film scores, and makes a hushed and dissonant recording, that feels like a sublime throwback to the mafia-related shenanigans of 60's chicago via the use of restrained piano, that really is quite lovely and adds substantial weight to the composition.

If you are looking for a Ennio Morricone compilation....short of buying a boxset, you'd be hard pressed in beating this for value for money. It's a fantastic summary of his work and covers a fair amount of material. And is the perfect introduction to his work, (especially if you just want to buy one compilation of his work). This is highly recommended to fans both old and new, and is boosted by the compilers making a great job of the selection. So if you don't want to have to splash out on an expensive disk, to hear his influential work...this really is the first place you should start.

HAVING HEARD EXERPTS OF THE MUSIC BEFORE, IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I
WANTED.

5 out of 5 stars A collection of Morricone's most popular and entertaining.......2005-07-31

Volume I of III, of this 'best of' Morricone trilogy, is the best of the three. This volume consists of music that can be listened to alone and socially, with some of the most catchy and minimalist rhythms you'll ever hear. You'll listen to this album and wonder what movie you've heard that song from before(Morricone's canon being primarily for film scores). If you're hear because you're trying to get the song from a movie, and you've never really heard of Morricone before, then you've luckily stumbled upon some of the best music I've ever heard. Or, if you're a Morricone fan and you'er looking for a good compilation, since Morricone has done too many film scores to even possibly own them all, then this is good to have. I wouldn't really reccommend Volume II and III unless you're looking or a very comprehensive collection of Morricone, since Volume I seems to me to carry his most absolute best. Definetely buy this album, it's very good.

3 out of 5 stars Good but flawed.......2003-11-02

I was at Borders book store this afternoon. I came across "Un Amore: One Love" in the cd racks and decided to listen to this cd at one of the store's listening stations. After listening to the first four tracks I thought the cd was interesting enough to buy it. Being a big fan of trance music, I was hooked on the melodies and the fact that a lot of the songs were sung in Italian. Granted the trance beats just reeked of cheese ala DJ Sammy and Darude but I can look past that. However I cannot look past the group's horrific cover of that insipid Lonestar cover "Amazed". I didn't like the original version, I certainly didn't enjoy the group's attempt at reggae with this song. The other song I wasn't wild about was "Marina". The only part of the song I did like was the lyrics sung in Italian, the rest was a mess. The biggest flaw with this album is that the group doesn't know if it wants to be known for dance songs or ballads. I thought the overall sound on the album was uneven. The ballads were borderline easy-listening music. The last the group could have done to the ballads was to keep them in the trance vein but just slow down the bpm's (beats per minute). On the more positive note, I did enjoy the acoustic mix of "L'Italiano" and the tender ballad "Faithfully" in particular. I loved the female vocals from Reina (who sang one of my favorite euro-pop songs "Find Yourself Another Woman" a few years ago) on "Viva Per Lei". 85% of "Un Amore: One Love" is quite good, it is just the 15% that I find highly questionable. I think the The Sicilians could have made a better album.

5 out of 5 stars PURE INNOVATION AT IT'S BEST.......2003-07-11

With all of the positive response that I've witnessed, I simply cannot even imagine why `Un Amore' hasn't exploded onto the music scene in quite the way that it deserves. This categorically has to be THE BIGGEST "sleeper" hit CD of all time in my book. `Un Amore' is loaded with the highest caliber of talent quality, music quality, production quality & song material. Even the impressive level of marketing genius behind this project is second to none. Just think about the strategy: take a consummate artist like Angelo Venuto & team him up with some of the best & brightest rising stars of today's music scene. For example, pairing him with Dance music princess Reina on "Vivo Per Lei" is utterly brilliant! Their voices sound like velvet together. Then there is his duet with up-and-coming Hip-Hop sensation Lumidee on "Amazed" which is another creative move that I think will pay off big time. And Angelo with Shawnee Ranx on "Marina" is fabulous! They "play" off of each other's vibe so well. Angelo even raps (quite impressively, too, may I add!!) on "Marina" in both Italian & Spanish. How's that for talent?

In my opinion, Angelo Venuto is one of the hottest Dance music sensations to hit the scene in quite some time. He can induce an audience into near hysteria as only very few artists are capable of doing. He has pure passion, drive & star quality. It's quite apparent that he strives for perfection in every way. His vocals are absolutely mesmerizing and multi-dimensional & his musical talents as a guitar player are simply unparalleled. 'Un Amore' is the perfect way for this artist to pay homage to great Italian music while demonstrating his love, passion & appreciation for music. I know that I anxiously awaited the release of this CD & I just can't even fathom how this CD hasn't yet become the biggest hit of the summer. So, it's time to do a massive nationwide rollout of `Un Amore'. I'm sure that there are thousands of music lovers across the country who would appreciate this music as much as the New York Tri-State area does. This project has the right formula for success as far as content, talent, quality & universal appeal. So, if the record stores & radio stations won't take the initiative then, it's up to the fans to do it. It's time to share & spread our Italian pride across the nation. So, buy a copy of `Un Amore' & send it to someone you love today.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting representation of the singer.......2003-11-07

Eva Turner was condemned to be remembered as a one role singer; the role of Turrandot. Her artistry went far beyond that. She was a slow starter in many ways, and it took a considerable amount of time for major houses outside Italy to notice her. Yes, she was enjoyed and used in the Italian opera houses, but ignored in her own land. Eventually, she made her debut there and was a hit. Her voice is not to everyone's liking, and some critics found her interpretations very "ordinary." Some felt she couldn't color her voice enough to render complete interpretations of the roles she sang.

The real problem was her voice was not subtle at all. Through her development it grew and grew in size (many other singers didn't want to sing with her, not because of her personality -- she was a trouper, but because they had to strain so to be heard when singing with her). As with all very large voices, the virtues are astonishing and the vices just as pronounced. Perhaps she was not capable of much subtle coloring as many smaller voices were capable of, but she was able to "raise the roof" in the theatres she sang in, and present a very powerful living drama. Her intonation was nearly perfect at all times. And, unlike is often thought, she had great stage presence.

Finally, when a role came her way, one in which she had no competition, people were willing to actually open their ears and hear what she had to offer.

This set of recordings is very interesting to listen to. Yes, as with all "complete works of anyone" we hear repeats of various arias. The key then is to listen and see what changes had developed as the performer expanded their understanding of the role. Few singers really show much development in that regard. In this case, there are improvements that we hear from time to time.

Some of the pieces recorded do nothing for me, and I wouldn't have wasted the time recording them, however, they reflect what producers were having singers record at that time.

One role that Turner sang and excelled in was the Leonora from Trovatore. Yes, she had the necessary agility. She even produced a beautiful trill. Sadly, nothing here gives evidence to this fact.

I recommend this recording for those interested in having recordings of this great and under appreciated singer who had so much to give. I recommend it also for those interested in hearing a truly huge voice (some say that even Nilsson could come close to the power of Turner) recorded with minimal destortion. We are not able to know exactly how magnificent her voice really was, not even through these recordings, but we can hear the even quality of her noble instrument.

It is a pricey set, but for those who are interested in historic recordings of very famous singers, I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Voice of a Legend.......2001-01-13

Dame Eva Turner was arguably the greatest singer that England produced in the last century. Sadly, she was also one of the most under-recorded singers in history. This compilation finally releases in one package all of the material that we know of at this time. Unfortunately, that means that there are numerous recordings of the same arias, done at different times. Rumors continue as to the existence of more material in the vaults of companies in England, but none of that is available.

What you will hear is the voice of the definitive Turandot, a role which Dame Eva premiered in many houses, though the first performance of the opera was sung by Rosa Raisa. However, Franco Alfano, who completed the opera after Puccini's death proclaimed Dame Eva as the perfect Turandot. She effortlessly produces enormous waves of sound that are, at turns, steely or supple. Her instrument was one that has only been equaled by the great Birgit Nilsson.

Dame Eva left the stage in 1949 and moved to Oklahoma, where she was a professor of voice at the University of Oklahoma for 10 years before returning to her native England and taking her place on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory. She died in 1990, at the age of 98.

I just got this in the mail today and have only listened to a few tracks, but the "Les pecheurs de perles" alone makes this a must-have. Sooooo gorgeous. Gedda's voice is divine- probably the best tenor I have ever heard, tone-wise at least.

I love dancin. Collecting magazines is fun. Driving without pants on is allowed. Making CD's like this is not allowed. Here is why. When it makes me not want to dance or work on my magazine collection something is way wrong. Even worse for some odd reason I feel really guilty now when I'm driving around without pants on when this CD is playing. Why God!! Why? Verdi, Gimme back my lunch money or else you'll pay.
