5 out of 5 stars Excellent return to form.......2007-06-26

5 out of 5 stars Matts Mood~Matt Bianco.......2007-05-05

My first CD of this group as a whole! I had heard cuts from this CD on satellite radio (Ie: La Luna)! Very Impressed with the beat and vocals!
I decided to order this CD and definetly got my moneys worth! The quality of the CD is great and really makes a good stereo system strut its stuff. The beat is bosa nova, cha cha if you will, pop all rolled into a nice collection of very entertaining music.
I have Basia CDs and this is definetly Basia at her best. She really seemed to be enjoying herself in this CD! If you like smooth jazz and maybe getting a little tired of just instrumental heres one CD to mix things up with some good vocals...

5 out of 5 stars Matt Bianco with Basia - "Icing On The Cake".......2007-03-27

If you've never heard this lady called Basia... well, you're in for such a treat. What a voice! She sings, you soar. Danny White's keyboarding is like a seven-course meal for your ears. Mark Reilly's vocals are clear and clean. Bassist Kito Poncioni seems to feel out the soul of each song and play it with just the right amount of "groove". This cd contains such wonderful rhythms, it's hard to NOT to sway in your seat. You'll be wishing for Basia to start working on her next project. Do your musical self a favor, buy this CD. You'll enjoy listening to it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars 'Ear Candy' --Creative Contemporary Pop.......2006-11-17

I bought this CD on a gamble, having only heard a little snippet that I really liked, and, being familiar with Basia's music, I thought it was a good risk. I wasn't dissapointed. I don't know anything at all about 'Matt Bianco'. But whoever the male singer is and the other musicians that make up this music, they really have an infectious groove going on. Basia, who is the polish singer who has had a great deal of success in the contemporary pop genre, shares the singing on almost every track here, and the effect is very complementary. The songs would fit very well on any of her earlier albums, particularly the Sweetest Illusion (1994). I say that because the instrumentation on that album was just killer, and so is this. It's slick, it's listenable. It's ear candy. I've been listening to this recording off and on for several months and still enjoy it immensely.

The album really mixes up a nice blend of creative tunes that really defy categorization, although there are several that are quite brazilian in their feel (latin, bossa nova, samba) yet they seem to create a flavor all their own. The singing is really augmented when combined with the extraordinary vocal talents of Basia, as the two (male/female) together create a really nice balance of textured vocal sound.

What I appreciate most about the album is the actual song structures and instrumentation arrangements. I have several favorite tracks on here: 'I never meant to' is a wonderful laid back tune that has a killer hook in it. Basia's backing vocal of 'ha haha hahaha' are sweet and soft and create a wonderful 'cushion' that fits perfectly with the male lead vocals. 'Golden Days' is quite infectious. I defy anyone to sit still listening to this. Upbeat, postivie and feel good stuff. Great changes and creative arrangement, the song is built around a great energetic piano riff that hits the off beats. Very cool. 'Slip and Sliding' is also very addictive to listen to, and just continues with it's own momentum.

The most unusual track on the album is the last one: 'Matts Mood III', and it has got to be my favorite. It's another energetic, kinda 'techno' piece, this time all instrumental. It's built on a great little 'rhodes' electric piano riff with a bit of delay and layered against a canvass of sound that builds bit by bit full of ear candy I've never heard before, but it all works in a wonderful way. In fact, it's downright addictive! With each cycle, new bits of free form and very creative improvisation is introduced. I just love it.

This album will delight fans of Basia and anyone else who really appreciates sophisticated pop/jazz music. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars good things to those who wait........2006-10-06

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Grows on you.......2007-03-06

I bought this album on vinyl a couple of weeks ago out of a bargain bin in San Francisco. I paid a dollar for that record and it's one of the best values I ever had for a george. All songs are perfect crafts of latin-pop-synth material full of beautiful vocal arrangements and pianos. Basia totally steals the show on this record. If you like the eighties, this album is a must have. One of the best examples of pop music production and vocal work.

Important detail: On the LP record, the song "More Than I Can Bear" features Basia's vocals. On the CD, her vocals are removed and Mark Reilly sings the song by himself. I guess this mix was done at last minute to create a sensation of loneliness, since Basia's haunting voice makes you think she's also longin' for a long lost love.

Which version of "Bear" I prefer? The one with Basia. She is the long lost love. Get the LP besides the CD. I wonder if the LP version can be found in any other compilations like The Best of Matt Bianco: 1983-1990

4 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Pop.......2006-12-27

If you ask me, one thing that presents Americans with a struggle is the effort to create sophisticated pop music for discerning adults. Sure, we can crank out dozens of indie artists who want us to share their angst and pain and listen to their agit-prop, and there's no end to the stream of folkies that are pouring out of campus coffee houses. But when we yearn for a more upscale and less preachy sound, we end up importing Canadians and Brits to sludge out treacle-soaked covers of the so-called Great American Songbook. Hey, I've got nothing against Cole Porter and the Gershwins, but sometimes I want to hear something that was written after 1929.

The British, though, seem to have a positive genius for rich melanges of pop, jazz, and samba, as well exemplified in this album. As stated in many previous reviews, Basia (before she really became Basia) plays a major role in this production, so if you like her work, you should dig this CD. (Of course, I do have to note that at least two of the songs from this outing are staples of the Muzak system in my office, so make of that what you will. Then again, it also plays a lot Muzakified Steely Dan, so that's pretty good company.)

The second cut, "More Than I Can Bear", which is comparatively Basia-less, is my favorite, a nicely melancholic piece about romantic loss with some simple but effective backing from an organ, which you typically don't hear too much these days outside of church. "No No Never" and "Riding With The Wind" are also strong numbers with a Latin inflection, and "Sneaking Out The Back Door" is a fun little romp with a peppy beat. All of the other tunes are pretty solid as well.

I suspect that you have to be in your 30s to really enjoy this, and if you find, say, the rock stylings of Phil Collins to be too terrifying, you probably need something much more watered down. And if you regularly debate which AC/DC and Van Halen lineups were the most awesome, or your hero is the late Dimebag Darrell, then chances are good this won't be your cup of tea. But if you want some intelligent pop with a low cheese factor, this should be just the thing.

4 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2005-03-22

The only reason I give this (the first & best Matt Bianco album to date) four instead of five stars is probably purely the record companys fault...

Firstly, when I first heard the album back in the early eighties it was on a tape that included things that are not on the CD I just bought.

1) Track 2,the version of 'More Than I Can Bear' is not the one with Basia's soothingly brilliant backing vocals on it (there is a version featuring Basia which is better)

2) Track 4, 'Half A Minute' is not the 12" version as I'm sure it was on the tape

3) & of course as has been mentioned, no 'Big Rosie' which I think was track 10 on the tape before 'Matts Mood II'

Mark Reilly, Basia, Danny White & not forgetting Ronnie Ross' sax playing and all the other musicians made an album that was way ahead of its time and still sounds fresh today.

4 out of 5 stars Great album and an introduction to Basia.......2004-07-20

This was the group Matt Bianco's first album and many of its tracks feature the initial work of the great Polish diva, Basia. The songs range from samba/Bossa Nova based rythyms to 80's techno-pop and are performed flawlessly. My favorite songs on the album are the ones sung by Basia (especially Half A Minute) but they are all great. Do yourself a favor and give this wonderful album a listen!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the '80s.......2003-05-05

A true classic which sounds great almost twenty years after its first release. Full of the humour and fun of the earlier Matt Bianco work but much deeper and more textured, as well as more lyrically sophisticated. The title track is breezy pop, but it is the Latin inflections in "No No Never," "Half a Minute," and "Sneaking Out the Back Door" which make this album so intriguing and unique. I resist the term "fusion" in that it is a classification used to market and sell music, but I don't know how else to describe the synthesis of pop, jazz, salsa, samba, and electronic music which characterizes this work. Basia's voice is in fine form (we Matt Bianco fans always KNEW she was going to be huge), and Mark Reilly sounds young, playful, and exuberant. His performance on "More Than I Can Bear" is particularly poignant--the piece must be one of the saddest songs ever written about a lost love. Great music for blasting in the car on a hot summer day, windows open all the way and nowhere you really have to be in a hurry.

Matt Bianco enjoyed European chart success during the 1980's and early 90's. Their biggest hit, 'Don't Blame it on that Girl', was produced by none other than Emilio Estefan. This collection features that tune plus a Seven & 12-inch mixes of their track 'Fire in the Blood', a 1990 update of 'We've Got the Mood' & twelve more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great from start to end.......2006-03-22

Basias voice, his piano, all is good.
The sax intro in Good Times is just thrilling. I like to hit the back button 5 or 6 times on that intro before I let the whole song go.
One of those cd's I have played 100's of times in a decade of enjoyment.
I bought it thinking I just knew one song, knew at least half of them.

5 out of 5 stars The Stan Getz of the 1980's.......2005-01-22

First off, there is NO Matt Bianco, just like there is no Led Zepplin (sorry if I just burst your bubble there). Moving on..

Matt Bianco did/does for the brazilian pop/bossa sound what Stan Getz did with it in the 1960's -- re-intoroduce the catchy syncopations of the Brazilian beat and updated snappy horns to a new generation of listeners. With the backing of Basia's vocals, how could they have not been a hit? Almost like a deja vu of Astrud Gilberto (whom Basia would later sing a song about when she went solo) meets the present. The first time I heard "Half a Minute" I rushed out to buy the CD -- it was just that cool.

This collection covers pretty much all the best they did in their early years (before Basia split to do her own thing). The music is light and fun, and some of it might even be almost timeless -- certainly those who have never heard it would not think it was dating back to the 80's!

This band had that same breath of fresh "pop" (and Brazilian) air as did Swing Out Sister, or the instrumental band of Spyrogyra. Certainly if you like those, and you liked Basia's solo stuff, you will not be disappointed with this collection!

3 out of 5 stars A "Best" collection this is only fair, at best..........2004-05-22

I am a die hard Basia fan! When I found out that Half A Minute, performed live on the Basia On Broadway CD, was really Matt Bianco's, from years back, I decided to buy this CD and check it out. Well...it's not Basia.

The cornerstones of this CD are Jamaican/Jazz influences. You'll hear strange little noises and chanting throughout this CD, which really didn't disturb too much. Some of the songs have good rhythms and decent song structure, but nothing close to Basia's quality. My favorie song on the disc was, as if you couldn't guess, Half A Minute. With that said, the rest of the material was just fair. A couple songs were annoying and I simply hated a couple too. Plus, Matt doesn't have the vocal chops to get it done. He's a master on the keyboards and needs to stay there.

Bottom line: If you love Basia, you will probably not love this CD. If like unique music with a Jamaican/Jazz flair, this could be for you.

5 out of 5 stars Matt's Mood.......2000-07-26

It's too bad this band has never really caught on in the States. They, along with Swing Out Sister, helped introduce a fresh new sound to the music world. They also brought us the lovely Basia. Luckily, while living in London, I was able to pick up this greatest hits collection. The album is a wonderful of blend musical influences. Pick it up if you have the chance.

5 out of 5 stars The Album is Very Very Very Good.......1999-10-21

I got the album, just thinking that I knew only one or two tracks, but I knew most of them. I haven't stopped playing it in over a forthnight. It's fantastic.

I came across this L.P. by mistake. I was looking for a record by Tones on tails the song was called GO! Those who know will understand. I was young and naive and when I played this album I was dissapointed to find out it was not what I was looking for.
Needles to say Yeh-Yeh really grew on me,I was hooked!
FYI the 12" single of Yeh-Yeh has a VOCAL/EXTRA SMOOTH version of "smooth"
Also, the 12" single of Don't blame it on that girl has an extended version, and a rare groove mix of the song, and as a bonus Wap bam boogie edit and 12" version
"Indigo" was good, but "Who's side are you on" was even better.
    Now about Basia.........

5 out of 5 stars Their best album ever.......2002-05-19

I've been an avid MB Fan from day one, but in my opinion they've never topped this: This collection of timeless gems is now in my third edition (the first two cd's wasted away after too much playing / travelling) and will always stay in my travel bag. There's just no bad track on this, and "Summer Song" will just simply stay in my heart as the best MB song ever.

    5 out of 5 stars Matt Bianco is a Group...Not a Guy.......2000-10-25

It's a little bit of Sergio Mendes, a little bit of Basia(who got her start w/the group Matt Bianco),with a sophisticated twist of Herb Alpert and a lot of FUN & ENERGY ! Styles combined consist of Samba, Salsa, Pop, Dance with an R & B edge. The title for the instrumental Smooth summarizes the whole atmosphere and ambiance of the album. Both Mark Reilly and Mark Fisher know how to blend the best of the "Latin Sound" with contemporary adult jazz and pop. The great and questionable reason why this group has never been marketed in the U.S. is another wonder unto itself ! Matt Bianco should not be kept as an import secret...

This is a definite must have and keepsake for the import/global music collector. Matt Bianco is indeed a true talent and a rarity !

Wholly derivative Latin-infused smoooooth jazz from British popsters Matt Bianco.

Yet Matt Bianco -- throughout a lengthy series of top-notch pop records -- continually shows a talent for rewriting Latin-flavored jazz pop into something wholly new and completely catchy. "Sunshine Day" gets the party started, giving you the feel of hanging out after hours at the coolest club in pre-Castro Havana. "Gypsy Lady" speeds up the tempo a bit. "Altozano" borrows its melody a little too heavily from the Brazilian bossa nova standard "Mais Que Nada," but generally this record is light-weight and languid tropical fun.

      4 out of 5 stars Cuba!.......2002-05-19

New change of direction for MB: In their exploration of latino music they find Cuba and Cuba seems to like it! "Cha Cha Cuba" is a great track recorded in the same studio as the "Buena Vista Social Club" and sounds very acoustic and quite infectious. " Sunny side up" might just be one of the best pop songs ever written and "Could you be" is such a great lovesong that it is hard not o melt like butter. Great Album!

5 out of 5 stars Rico Suave !!!.......2001-01-30

Received this the other day in the mail... Absolutely thrilled with this c.d. This group never disappoints ! In fact, on this latest effort they have turned the speed up a notch or two for strict partying purposes. Here you have two European/British guys who can capture almost any rich Latin style of music and whip it into a "having a good time" frenzy. However, don't let the cd title or the first 2-3 tracks make you think the entire album is one big Cuban fiesta. While the entire disc is set on a vacation mode the styles slightly vary from Latin-cha-cha music to slight hip hop to jazzy pop with a faint techno edge towards the end of the disc (check out Underground with lead singer using a vocoder and the hi-tech club beats reminiscent of Moby)!... This comes highly recommended with a tall Blue Hawaiian or a cool Marguerita and the beach !!!

      3 out of 5 stars a decline in creativity.......2001-01-18

I've been Matt Bianco's fan since their first album and I have all their albums. Noticing that their music has grown (or should I say mutated) over the years, I can't say that this album is a masterpiece. The songwriting is very good, indeed. But apart from the Cuban music they played, I found nothing new about them. Similar exploration was done in their Another Time Another Place album. Also on Gran Via and World Go Round. Those albums were much better than Rico. Except for the vocals and beautiful piano by Fisher, the music is just like ordinary Cuban music. Not Matt Bianco.

      5 out of 5 stars RICO!!.......2000-10-31

Well, I couldn't recommend this album enough. If today is much difficult to find something that really "ignites" you between the too many (often poor) releases, it is much more difficult to have a cd that delivers in its entirety. Here you have a 10/10 songs for a groovy, inspired record. From the very start with the cha-cha funk of "Cha cha Cuba", to the Chic-reminescing dance-funky of "Stake out" (really one of my favourites), the energic "Keep the vibe", the beautiful duet "Could you be", or even the curious and groovy instrumental "Underground". Go get it

Basia's harmonies really stand out and the arrangements are fantastic especially with the headphones on. Quality always floats to the top and Matt Bianco proves that their blend of jazzy hipsway, brassy funk and bossa nova groove never goes out of style. This has it all.
