3 out of 5 stars Refreshing Change From Oakenfold's Solid Trance Sets.......2007-02-25

This compilation is a little outdated with its release being in 1997, but I still enjoy most of it a decade later. Not a common occurrence with electronica because it changes so quickly.

Unlike most, I'm not a huge fan of Paul Oakenfold when he mixes sets that are purely hard trance or hard techno. His eclectic sets like Global Underground 004:Oslo are much more enjoyable and better stand up against the test of time.

Disc 1 wins out as my favourite of the two. The track selection is really well layed out on disc 1 and for some odd reason the ambient/drum and bass feel works well. Disc 1 may be too mellow for Paul Oakenfold fans that like his non-stopping high energy trance sets that he is so loved for.

Disc 2 starts out really well, but deteriorates into hard techo and trance...The kind of tracks that make me picture a lot of glow-sticks waving around (shudder). Thankfully this only happens after Shades of Blue by Hush (track 5 of 10 on disc 2).

Overall, Disc 1 4/5 stars and Disc 2 2/5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Intriguing but a bit mellow........2002-07-18

You will like this one if you like the lighter synth styles. Not as hard-driving or dramatic as Transport.

4 out of 5 stars not your average GU..........2002-02-24

This album is not what you might expect from Paul Oakenfold or Global Underground. The first half of the first disc is ambient mixed with drum n bass. "Elysian Fields" and "Tripping On Broken Beats" are all nice tracks, but some are a bit disappointing like "Alaska" and "You're Not Alone". But the dnb ambience is brought towards trance on the second half of the first disc, using "Set In Stone" as the transition piece. A phunky trance blowaway is present on "Reach" and the rest of the disc is nice as well. The second disc starts with dirty robot funk and sinister trance rhythms. "The Ohm Sessions" is dirty hard trance at it's finest, but it cleans up with "Cycles of Life", which uses piano and strings to hammer out trance rhythms. The rest of the album is 90's sounding electro-trance. This is by no means a disappointing album overall, but it lacks luster in parts and is not your conventional GU or Oakey set.

3 out of 5 stars Ambient mixed with Drum n Bass.......2002-01-03

I always can trust Oakenfold for a solid CD however, this set is not true Oakenfold. People in search of his typical proggresive trance will be slightly dissapointed. Many different genres are played with including ambient and acid jazz roots. Not a "Tranceport", but worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome track layout!.......2001-11-02

This mix presents the listener with a different approach to a mix: blending from many genre's to form a perfect climax over 2 hours.

He starts with sensitive, interesting and melodic drum&bass, moves into a more progressive d&b, and then breaks out the trance/sorta-goa/sorta-psychtrance to get you going near the end of CD1... CD2 continues with the same stuff, though moving it into straight up and down trance, throwing in another hint of d&b, then moving on to a lovely finish.

Definitly not the same style he would play during the "Tranceport" era, or even the "Resident: 2 Years At Cream" era. This is before all that, but after his Goa spell. Wonderfully chillful at the begining, then amazingly it towers above all at the end. If you're into Oakey, Nick Warren or Dave Seaman, get this.... you'll like it. Much more of an energetic build up starting with CD2..... absolutely!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best Oaky.......2006-04-14

How can you describe Oakenfold?? A legend to trance music... I'll admit all of his stuff isn't that great (especially his newer stuff including Creamfields) but none-the-less Oakenfold brings a unique trance style that is unmatched by other mainstream DJ's. Global Underground OSLO is one of the best DJ mixes I have ever heard. If you want to have an intense night of dancing to some intense house-ish trance this CD is definitely worth it. From start to finish it keeps you engaged in the music - never a boring moment. The vocal trance that is also mixed in is the cherry on top (may be bias! - i am huge vocal trance fan).

If you are an Oakenfold fan and want something better than Creamfields or Bunkka -- THIS IS A MUST BUY.

5 out of 5 stars Disc 1 is Classic.......2006-04-08

I own about seven Oakenfold albums and have been following his career for some time now. Disc One of the Oslo set is beautiful with a worldly feel featuring dark, moody textures. Elysian Fields is a spooky opener that sets the drum & bass tone tone of the set on disc one. Trippin' on Broken Beats adds a jazz element to the beats, then on to the moody Beyond Therapy and Alaska with drum & bass beats persisting, with a psychedelic, India vibe... then a beautiful piano solo bridging into Music for the Lonely by Jamie Myerson puts you on some sort of twisted production line. Olive's You are Not Alone continues with the industrial drum & bass vibe. After some progressive trance from Bedrock comes the track "Reach" by Lil Mo Ying Yang (Basement Jaxx Firecracker Remix), which is an amazing, chaotic track with primal screams, firecrackers and sirens going off. The remainder of the set is brisk trance.

This album will probably disappoint those fans who are fond of Oakenfold's driving Tranceport style. It will appeal to those looking for a moody global journey from the mind of Paul Oakenfold.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the NY Underground, but I love Oakenfold anyway!.......2006-02-19

I do like this collection, however the song selection is better on the NY G.U. CD

Side note - I think Global Underground does a great job of bringing DJ favorites into cohesive comilations.

If you are an Oakenfold fan, you MUST purchase Perfect Rresents Another World. This by far the best compilation he has done and is one of my absolute favorite CDs of all time. Every Oakenfold or even techno/dance/electronica fan should own it!

3 out of 5 stars this record is the best in the year 98.......2005-08-07

paul oakenfold is a one a best dj around the world, this record is cool because the songs are a mix from diferent countries,interesting.............

5 out of 5 stars Differently Perfect for Oakie.......2004-09-25

i love this album, because it's so much different than all his other albums. The drum and bass in the begginning of disc 1 is incredible, then it proggesses slowly but surely into incredible prog trance. Oakie may get more credit than he deserves most of the time, but i feel like this album is pure. You don't feel any commercialism coming out of this album. Simply brilliant. If you've been listening to trance non stop and get sick of how its all the same than this cd will give you a great change. You wouldn't here many of these tracks on any of his other cd's which Oakenfold has a terrible habit of doing( putting songs on the same cd). If you don't have this album, i highly suggest you get it, for well if your a big oakie fan, than this cd will just let you know that he can do different types of mixing( and not in a commercial bunnka or swordfish kinda way) CHEERS
