5 out of 5 stars the crown jewel of 4ad .......2004-09-24

Wow, I cannot believe that it has been nearly 20 years since I first heard "A Day" on the dancefloor at the new wave/goth club Blitz in Phoenix. The DJ used to play the remix of A Day, and I can remember thinking "this is the coolest song ever". I asked the DJ who it was and I understood him as saying "Zylocks" so I looked for Zylocks records for a year (I was only 13). Needless to say, I finally saw the light, got the album and it has been in semi regular rotation ever since. Recently I met a new friend that is just as crazy about the whole post-punk/goth/synthpop thing, and he has felt the same way about this album since he was a kid. It is one of the few albums that when I put it on, I let it play in it's entirity. It would seem a sacrilige to take it off half way through. So light some candles and insense and read some Poe, Dickinson, Or The Grey Garden, something dark and lovely and enjoy this album swirling in the background.

5 out of 5 stars My first CD.......2003-05-02

My first experience with Xymox was actually their 1989 album 'Twist of Shadows' which I purchased on cassette. After being quite impressed with the entire album I bought 'Clan of Xymox' on compact disc which is, in my opinion, their best and most original work to date. And as mentioned by another fan, the almost 'other-worldly' vocals of Mr. Moorings are what really makes the group stand out. Seems like most people either love or hate this album. For me, it's definitely a classic, and every bit as enjoyable now as the day I first listened.

2 out of 5 stars Dated. FAR from their best........2003-03-28

It's old, dated and not very good at all. I love Xymox and their later albums are FAR better than this. It's all pompous, self agonising nonsense with a pretty low production level. If you find it cheap as a 2nd hand give it a go if you must. NOT worth buying new. Trust me, don't be tempted! Notes From The Underground, Xymox Live and Creatures blow this old junk into the abyss. This can be viewed as a demo disc but that's about it. FAR too much boring sampling and clanking noise.

5 out of 5 stars how did this one get lost in the mix?.......2003-02-18

So it wasn't 'radio friendly', per se. Not due to lack of memorable melodies or catchy, gloomy dance tracks. Clan of Xymox always got ragged by critics because they didn't have an original sound. Maybe that was true--they wore their influences on their sleeve--Ronny Moorings used to tout New Order as the greatest band around and made no bones about wanting to be like them. He was just a bit darker than Sumner and Co. But as the years have passed and all the other bands that made music like this have faded away, people still want these early Clan of Xymox records like crazy. They want them because they're so damn good. Sure, it's a bit o' Cure, a bit o' New Order, with a 4AD glaze, but it goes down so easy. No music evokes wintry atmospheres and that special brand of romanticism that the 80's synth pop bands had quite like Clan of Xymox. Sure, tons of people made music like this in the early and mid '80's, but nobody put these elements together with such grace as Ronny Moorings. Ronny's a bit like Trent Reznor or Billy Corgan--the music is almost always written and performed by him 100%(save for the few Pieter Nooten tracks scattered about). His indulgences are his strength and his voice is, in my opinion, THE definitive goth voice. Oh, I know Pete Murphy, Andrew Eldritch, etc., etc. I love them, too and they're great vocalists. But Ronny has a way with those lower registers and with those impassioned high notes like nobody else plus, a pretty cool way of doubling the low register with the high register to maintain the dark croon and the desperate howl all at the same time. The Clan's instrumentation made them great too. Electronic dance beats, synths, acoustic guitar, and synth strings were almost always the formula, not to mention some cool use of early sampling (further explored on 'Medusa'). With the ever masterful John Fryer at the production helm, this record is a sure bet to please anyone with a taste for the melancholy mirrorball from the time when Joy Division and Kraftwerk were THE patron saints of European music. Eat this one up!

5 out of 5 stars Like standing on Mount Olympus.......2002-02-13

This was their debut album and it is unbelieveable debut album at that . Most of these songs sound like they've been shining down from the Greek gods for a long time . I guarantee you that you get value for money when you listen to the start of A day and up until the very last track it doesn't hold up .

Mesmerizing album from an equally mesmerizing band

Album Description

Still considered one of the pioneers of gothic rock, Clan Of Xymox deliver their eleventh CD in 22 years. Exhibiting a more mature sound, this release leans more towards dark rock than gothic, with subtle keyboards overlaid with guitars and live drum sounds. Ronny Mooring's deep, sensuous vocals accentuate the music and bring forth the deeper meanings of the songs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good...but not their best.......2007-07-17

Although a bit calmer than the past few recordings from Clan Of Xymox, it does have a few engaging moments. I think the best track is Be My Friend.

Ronny's voice is as rich as ever, it just the songs are a little flat. Kind of tired sounding in feel.

Clan Of Xymox has issued some masterpieces, but this one isn't one of them. It's good, but just in an average sort of way. It has been compared to the early yeas of Clan Of Xymox, but I couldn't see that. This is present day Clan without the EBM/ Electro in it.

Buy it if you are a Clan fan, but if you're looking to get something from them, get Farewell, Hidden Faces, or Songs From The Underground

5 out of 5 stars Great artist.......2007-01-05

Ximox is now an a clasical electronic-dark music conceptual artist. And this one album is a show of this.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as these user ratings are giving it.......2006-12-14

One of the only other somewhat negative reviews of this album pretty much summed up exactly what I wanted to say. Farewell is the best COX release in years and this follow up feels like it was more of a side-project that Ronny worked on in his basement with his laptop. There are some decent tracks here, but it is marred by 3 or 4 duds at the beginning and towards the end of the album. I've come to realize that if I skip 4 tracks on this album, it sounds much better, like Farewell actually. If this had come out 5-10 years ago when COX were putting out much worse stuff, I would have been happier with this album. But as a follow-up to Farewell, this comes off as a rushed catalog-filler album.

I tried to like it as much as Farewell but I just couldn't. And to try and compare it to Medusa is just rediculous. If there hadn't been so many 5 star reviews, I would have given it 3 stars, but I felt obligated to balance things out a bit.

5 out of 5 stars best xymox album!!!!.......2006-08-13

this is the best xymox album you can buy!!!they came a long way!!!you will not be disapointed!!!i own all the albums!!this one made it to the top!!!

5 out of 5 stars totally addictive.......2006-07-23

A breaking point you say?Well , not entirely, the Cox do what they are good at here and that is realising addictive and effective melodic moods gothic music without losing themselves in endless dwelling like so many other goth acts appear to be enjoying.
No , on "Breaking Point" they bring an even more mature sound that is alienating them more and more from the lesser gods. There is a bigger stress on the guitars which get a darker rock taint, but it stays very much the COX sound we all love and enjoy. Add to that Ronny Moorings's deep vocals and you can only but be perplex of what you hear. The summit of this pot pourri can be heard on " Weak In My Knees" where guitars and synths are 100% balanced out. Another highlight is " She's Dangerous" and there are many others I could name here. Honestly, of the 5 albums I have from the COX this is definitely a band showing itself in its full maturity. They hit and did not miss at all with an interesting balance between upbeat & more moody songs!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest of its time... and even now.......2007-04-18

For readers who did not grow up in the 80's but like this genre of music, this is the prototype ... or at least should have been , for darkwave/goth of the 80's and beyond. No other band has been able to match the songcrafting of this cd and the prior release. This was their greatest period (from 1985-1987). I was lucky to see them live once and the music still held up live. "Back Door" and "Louise" are the standouts, with the former song being almost orchestral in its layers of sound and arrangement. Dont let the eyeliner and pancake makeup fool you, this is true art.

5 out of 5 stars Xymox's greatest work.......2006-10-16

I bought this album on vinyl the day it came out in the fall of 1986 (along with PURITY by THE ESSENCE!) and from the moment I put it on, I was enchanted. I had their first album and NO HUMAN CAN DROWN was blasting through my cassette walkman every day but this album supassed everything else I had heard from any other band and still does! The 84-89 lineup of Xymox were very talented individuals. Ronny Moorings(the only origianl member left today and the singer/ guitarist), Pieter Nooten-keys, and Anke Wolbert-bass blended big strings, eerie choir, synths, guitar and drum machine in a way that cannot be matched. BTW, if you like the ambient side of Xymox, PLEASE check out the Pieter Nooten/Michael Brook album SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES. There are a few Xymox songs on it and it is very close in mood to Medusa, almost like an instrumental expansion and an excellent soundscape fore a rainy or dark and cold day. Back to Medusa.

1. Theme I-Very good instrumental opening wchich sets the mood for the rest of the album

2. Medusa-Oh man! Very cool dreamy bridge in the middle, very cool drum programming

3. Michelle-A bit on the dancy side and maybe a little psychedelic influence. Nice acousitc rhythn.

4. Theme II-Animal sounds, a woman yelling and orchestral strings?? Instrumental.

5. Louise-Fans agree, one of the best Xymox songs ever. Beautiful string intro, use of choir and acoustic guitar. Also, a very cool line "My heart use to beat, now it only weeps." Ahh Ronny...

6. Lorretine-The third and last instrumental. Very ambient. A little closer to some of Ronny's newer Xymox instrumentals.

7. Agonised by Love-The title says it all. Very grey with another very cool bridge with the drum machine.

8. Masquerade-Anke sings on this one. (My second fave! on Medusa) This song primarily consists of vocals, strings, drum machine and bass. The bridge and ending have some very beautiful synth worked into it.

9. After the Call-A Piter Nooten tune all the way plus he sings on it. Almost kind of New Agey with big strings and choir and timpany and snare. The SLEEPS WITH THE FISHES version is almost as cool

10. Back Door-A darwave classic. When I think of classic Xymox sound with all three members, this is one of the top ones. Cool guitar, excellent bass and amazing strings and choir again!! Very cool ending to an amazing timeless album

There were no singles for Medusa and for a teenage darksider, I needed more. Well, finally in 87, Medusa re-recorded Muccoviet Musquito which appeared on the Lonely Is An Eyesore. very much in the same mood as Medusa. Then in 88, they released the Blind Hearts 12" which is included on the newer versions of Medusa.

11. Blind Hearts [*]-I was very dissapointed with the female backup vocals on Blind Hearts but it's stilla cool tune.

12. Million Things [*]- I love A Million things and this version has a long cool string intro that isn't on the TWIST OF SHADOWS release. This song is probably the bridge between the two albums soundwise..

13. Scum [*]- Another reviewer said it was dancy. I guess it is. Not quite my sound of music.

There really is not another album like this out there. Twist of Shadows is a great album but Medusa jsut has 'that' sound. It's not only the mood but the musicianship is far above average. I have not heard anyone play bass like Anke, something to listen for and areal treat. If you like Medusa, please check out what The Cocteau Twins, X-Mal Deutschland, Dead Can Dance, what other 4AD labelmates were doing around that time, Tess Records (my band AUTUMN was on Tess for a short period with Xymox!) and Project Records.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2006-01-30

An excellent album, and a great novilty in 1986. its a great mix of very mellow, atmospheric tracks, and more upbeat electronica ones (what the sisters would like to have done but didn't). For me Michelle and Back Door are the best tracks. It is also just worth a listen for the slightly bizarre track Theme II with the woman screaming (or shrieking it's hard to describe), but completely in tune. Very strange.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Escape.......2005-09-02

I can honestly say that I have never heard more beautiful and sensual music. I feel like I am on another planet when I listen to Xymox, especially to their album 'Medusa'. You must at least take time to listen to any music samples! You'll be hooked fast!

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2004-10-19

For their second 4 AD album, Dutch band Clan of Xymox have taken the most effective and attractive elements
of their mosaic of sound (as witnessed at intervals on their debut long player) and produced a work which, at times, achieves the beauty and ambience of label mates like The Cocteau Twins or DCD.The playing here glistens and shimmers, especially on the opener 'Theme 1'. 'Michelle' on side one, is a good example of the new approach, powerful and melodic, harnessing the aggression and momentum that would once have pulled the song into a brutal climax.
Medusa is a vibrant soundscape that really saw Clan of Xymox reaching a larger and more appreciative audience.
Medusa is, quite simply, beautiful listening and of course a classic in many books and so it is in mine.
Louise is just a track I will never ever get tired of.

    Album Description

2007 CD EP from this Gothic/Electronic outfit. Ronny Moorings has reappeared after years out of the spotlight with a cover of David Bowie's almighty classic. The industrial version of the song is slow, almost melancholic - in other words, typical Xymox - while the pop version of the original song is more of an homage to his time without the Clan. 'On a Mission' is a brand new track, done in the best tradition of past club hits. No other artist outside of Ronny can get modern Electro sounds out of a guitar for the Dancefloor scene and remain trend free. This is the reason for his longevity and his loyal fanbase. Also includes 'Be My Friend', one of the most successful songs from 2006's Breaking Point album has been added in a new mix. Panda.

    Album Details

2007 EP Single from the Dutch Goths Includes Two Interpretations of the David Bowie Classic. One Version Has a More Slow Industrial Approach and the Other is a More Pop Approach. It also Includes a Hard Edged Song Aimed at the Scene's Dancefloor. Clan of Xymox is Ronny Moorings, Mojca Zugna, Denise Dijkstra (Keyboards), Agnes Jasper (Alternate Keyboardist) and Mario Usai (Guitarist).

The band's first "best of" since their formation in 1984. It includes an average of two songs from each C.O.X. album, and the final track list was in part chosen by fans via online voting. Five songs from the 4AD era were re-recorded to improve them, but without altering the initial atmosphere and sounds. Says band member Ronny Moorings, "Whilst listening to the final running order...I just got swept from period to period, remembering all kinds of people and situations. I am sure you too will have memories with certain tracks, so all I want to say to you now is: cherish your moments in life!"

    5 out of 5 stars What's not to like?.......2007-07-03

Clan Of Xymox is my favorite darkwave band. This is the best hits collection, and if your new to COX, this is the best place to start. Metropolis Records did a fantstic job of digitally remastering the older material, and the whole album is well produced and includes all of the lyrics and all of the best songs by this verry emotional synth heavy rock band.

    3 out of 5 stars Fair.......2007-05-27

Out of curiosity I purchased this best-of collection and unfortunately can't say that I was greatly impressed. Don't get me wrong however, this is quite good music for its genre which is, I guess, called dark wave. I would highly recommend this album to fans of darkwave or melancholy electronica in general. However the only stand out tracks for me were the 2 pre 1990's songs "a day" and "louise"... everything else on this compilation just seemed too derivative. Clan of Xymox sound as though Andrew Eldritch of the Sisters of Mercy and Martin Gore of Depeche Mode got together to make a German Industrial album of love songs... which would be great if it hadn't been done a million times already. Meh.

    5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2006-01-30

When you have a history that spans 20 years and includes more than 30 releases (including CD singles and remix albums) under their name as Clan of Xymox and as Xymox, it seems perfectly appropriate to release this "Best Of" album. Their history and the music provided throughout that history is very impressive. This album brings all of that out in the form of 14 strong selections and proves to the world the wonderful talents this group has portrayed over the years. From the very beginning their music has been stunning and they have only built on that one album after another.
I have to say that when I receive a CD like this and have it in my hands and CD player, it is one of the easiest reviews I have to do. As I look back over the years and pick up each album and flip through it or listen to it in it's entirety, each of these tracks bring back so many memories and thoughts about when I picked up each one over the years. There is no doubt that these are some of the best songs released by this group, and some of the best released in the related electro-goth genres.
The album contains the original versions of some of the later recordings, but the special treat for long-time fans who probably already have all of this material is the new recordings or alternate mixes. Of the fourteen tracks, half of them are either alternate mixes or new recordings. The songs from the earlier albums have been newly recorded including the very popular "Louise", "Back Door", "A Day", "Muscoviet Mosquito" and "Stranger". These are extremely well done as the moving beats and combination of guitars, solid synth-lines and Ronny's emotional and solid vocals combine for masterpiece after masterpiece. The alternate mixes include "I Want You Now" and "Into Extremes", two of the latest popular tracks from their later works.
The order on the album provides a nice variety by mixing them up so their not really done in chronological order. The popular bomastic track "There's No Tomorrow" kicks it off and we go from one club hit to another as we go from "Jasmine and Rose", the huge hit that brought them back into the spotlight of the goth scene after a few years and then to "I Want You Now". We jump back several years for "A Day" and the dreamy classic Clan of Xymox track "Louise". It's not all about driving club tracks with their history and thus the appearance of the popular single "Consolation" with it's downtempo style is appropriate.
This is how it all shapes up and this ends up being a great treat for new and old fans alike. Having these great tracks in one spot for me doesn't mean I'll stop listening to the individual album, but as a DJ makes it easy to have them in one spot. A great addition to any collection. Don't hesitate to pick it up!

    5 out of 5 stars coooooollllll.......2006-01-08

I have all the albums of Clan Of Xymox and Xymox , just call me a completist or a radical fan. You would say "why buy this one, since you have all"? well , for a starter for the new mixes and recordings which are an absolute must have. The quality is supurb, a real treat. Now I am looking forward for the new releases which are coming soon.
I don't know what else to say about this album , most people said it before me , this band is something special and deserve all our support. There are not too many bands on this planet like Clan Of Xymox.

5 out of 5 stars very VERY nice indeed.......2005-12-15

To catch up with their work I would recommend to listen to this album first ,although you would miss out on the many very beautiful slower works like Creatures, All I Have, It's All A Lie, Your Vice, Dark Mood, One More Time,Losing My Head, , Consolation, Undermined, At Your Mercy, Internal Darkness, Into Her Web etc. I just realized I made up a complete new Best Of Clan Of Xymox album and maybe they should consider one, featuring their more ambient side which they so perfectly set inbetween their more upbeat songs throughout their career.
Like many other fans I know I was delighted with this offering and this album always keeps me going.

5 out of 5 stars Clan of Xymox rules!.......2006-08-23

Xymox sticks to their dark moods, but this album has a lot of energetic songs ("I Want You Now"). As a longtime fan, I was very pleased with this return to their root sound. They continue to mature and evolve, but this album really knocks it out of the park.

5 out of 5 stars keep you coming back for more.......2006-07-11

What can I say about this CD? I love this band. I love that I know I'll love their stuff every time a new CD comes out. They're like that big, warm, fuzzy sweater on a rainy day. So comforting and familiar they are. Coming out of Amsterdam in 1984, their semi-extensive career has been a musical exploration down many avenues. "Notes" gets them (and their fans) back in touch with that fusing of electronic and goth that defines their finest moments. And unlike some other bands in that gothic/dark electro group, they do it all with a particular unpretentiousness that's so refreshing. In between all the minor chords and Ronny Moorings' reverbed vocals, there remains a delicate quality to their music; they certainly revisit their brief stay on label 4AD, with moments reminiscent of Dead Can Dance and other former label-mates. Some fine examples of programming (as expected) and just enough catchy numbers to keep you coming back for more only serves to strengthen an already fantastic collection of music.

5 out of 5 stars This is the marker for excellence.......2006-02-19

Sometimes it puzzles me why Clan of Xymox is not more readily accepted as goth music *legends* - especially in the US club scene. I worship this band. Over 15 years have passed since their debut on the 4AD label with Clan of Xymox (1985) and later Medusa (1987). Before that they had released Subsequent Pleasures on their own label in 1984. They've been on a major label (Wing/PolyGram), played the corporate game, and came back to their roots establishing their own label time and again. Stamina, if nothing else, should make them something other bands should aspire to. Keeping up with current trends and most importantly, still remaining true to themselves and the scene, CoX has continued to give us incredible, quality releases year after year. No where else has a band fused electronics and organic music like CoX has continued to do. In an interview they did with us in February 2001, Ronny commented, "As you know Clan of Xymox always delivered an album with a hybrid combination between keyboards and guitars, only the overall atmosphere this time is much darker than the previous releases. As far as I can see this is the line I will follow for the future as I feel this suits me the best and feel the most comfortable with; the dark side of Clan of Xymox! "

That being said, personally, I cannot tell you what a comfort this new CD has been for me in the past few weeks - especially regarding the happenings here in the U.S. I've drowned myself in this CD, over and over again and nothing has felt so soothing and "right" in a long, long time. It was like a homecoming in a way. Comfort in old familiars. Its classic Xymox in feel and darker tones, but its also current, with updated electronics and club-friendly beats melded with crunchy guitars. Its yet another perfect step forward in their progression as well as one of their most "atmospheric" CDs in a long time. The title Notes from the Underground is appropriately descriptive - having never lost touch with goth aesthetics. The production on this CD is incredible. Never has CoX sounded more polished and more mature with every note and sound tweaked to perfection. In appearance, its utterly beautiful - the cover in brilliant green and black covered in cryptic symbols and words and contrasting inside the liner notes and on the CD itself - an elegant and graceful spider spread out on a sea of crimson.

The first track, "Innocent," opens with a scratchy intro that gives way to classic CoX sounding keyboards that set the feel and beat of the song. Slightly reminiscent of their 80's sounding keys, its tempered with a darker, atmospheric minor synth line as Ronny's vocals pour over them like familiar and warm worn-velvet. Guitars scream accents and reinforce a sense of urgency related in the lyrics.

"I Want You Now" catches the ear immediately with an addictive guitar line and steady drumming. Electronics are used more as appropriately placed accents in this song... lots of noises and twitching going on and off throughout like audio-candy. Ronny croons, "Love.... love me not" with that deep whispery voice and I could just melt to my knees on the dance floor.

"Internal Darkness" follows at a more laid back beat. Loping along in self-indulged misery, its gloomy goth at its best ending with a plaintive piano line...

Sunshine, I wait for dawns recurrent light
I ponder in my narrow hour and warm myself
Moonlight calmly shines through the night
I stare at these old photographs, my heart beats fast
I find no peace to read or write
My soul is lost, my spirits down
There's no one in the dark
my little world has lost its light

Track 4 - "At Your Mercy" opens with a haunting sound scape - desolate and surreal with its echoes and chimes and bird calls. You can almost feel the dark mist before the guitar line swoops in to pick you out of the fog. The guitar is probably my favorite element of this song - at times tickling our ears with a Spanish flair. Incredibly dancy it plays into seductive, hopeless lyrics ... "She said she'd always love me, she said she's always need me...how could I could break away once she said this thing to me, she knew I was going, she knew I was going away..."
"Anguish" is a complex track, changing tempo and mood many times through out - sometimes enjoyably sinister, sometimes contemplative depressive. Although probably not as viable on the dance floor as some of the other tracks, it is a song with alot of musical merit... a journey that changes and morphs right before your ears from steady, driven tempos, to rumbling punk-like bass lines, to near silence interludes full of minimal electronic accents. At the end, it plunges into a stark soundscape and if you listen carefully, you'll hear a keyboard line that will be repeated with more force in the track
    "Something Wrong".

"Number One' starts off with some interesting electronic rumblings that rather remind me of Chewy from StarWars (credit to my child-like imagination). Whatever it was intended to be, it adds mysterious texture before the song kicks into this fast paced, up beat song. Smart guitar lines drive it and layers of keys in the background fill it. Reminiscent of classic Xymox, its an easily recognizable as one of their songs no matter if you've heard it before or not.

Mournful piano lines open the sad ballad-like "Into Ber Weh." Accented by delicate acoustic guitar and pensive vocals, its easily the most beautiful piece on the CD. However, if I had to chose a favorite track at this point in time, I do believe it would be "The Bitter Sweet" with all its dynamic changes, mysterious tone and perfect fusion of electronics and guitars. It opens with chiming darkness and a bubbling synth line infused with very industrial sounding noise. Ronny's voice announces, "I'm not a savior, I'm not a saint, I'm not an angel who's coming in, I dont believe in anything pure like you do" twice while intricate textured noises come to life in the background. The tempo picks up slightly and then fades into an angelic chorus until the song erupts into a new, faster tempo completely out of the blue. This transition is my absolute favorite part of the song. There's nothing like a good anticipated tempo change on the dance floor for added drama. After being electronic-heavy in the beginning, you get a good dose of guitar midway through the song and the beat continues to drive the song home while melody lines that appeared in the beginning are repeated at this new tempo. What a rush!

"Liberty," the title track to the single we saw previewed last December, is included here as track number 9. At the time of release, Anthony had written: " 'Liberty' is a song that could be interpreted different ways. " I guess it's gonna be, a question of my sanity - I guess it's gonna be against the heart of liberty." The things that lie at the " heart of liberty " are the things that keep us sane. They are our freedoms, however we define them. There is such an erosion of personal freedom throughout our life, that it leads to real desperation, a sickness of the soul. We might very well " warm to the thought of being through." Eternity still remains a veiled promise. "

"Something Wrong" is a fine example of their excellent and forward evolving synth work opening with some heavenly lines before plunging into a more desperate and sinister melody first heard at the end of "Anguish." The song moves along at a moderate pace, fusing guitar and bass in here and there and still, that keyboard line sings out in the background - akin to mournful strings, its get louder and louder and finally takes over in a furry of emotion.

Track 11, "Mysterium" was quite an unexpected treat for me and a demonstration of this bands wide ranging talent. Its an dark ambient, instrumental tracks slightly reminiscent of the Murder of Angels project put out on Middle Pillar Presents. Dark and thick in noises and gloomy atmospheres, its primordial ooze, its an industrial wasteland haunted by ghosts from different realities.

The final listed track, "The Same Dream" starts out with a version of that same synth line used in "Something Wrong" and "Anguish" neatly tying this CD together with its thematic inclusion. Sonja Rozenblum provides airy, heavenly backing vocals contrasting against Ronny's smooth voice. The beat is synth-pop in nature making it a prime candidate for the dance clubs while remaining true to its dark nature without getting too "poppy".

In conclusion, Notes from the Underground is a solid 12-song release with no bad apples in the bunch demonstrating once again that Clan of Xymox is one of the leading bands in this genre and one that deserves quite a bit more accolades than it gets. This is the standard other bands should aspire to. This is the marker for excellence from thematic approach, to infusion of organic and electronic elements, to production and presentation. This is quite possibly, the best release I'll hear all year. This is a must have.

    5 out of 5 stars a great album.......2006-02-15

Since the last Clan of Xymox album "Creatures", expectations were set high for the follow-up. "Notes from the Underground" and it's almost in the same high class as its predecessor.
The album begins with the very strong "Innocent", which has some Depeche Mode influences. When I say Depeche Mode, I am not talking about their last pathetic effort, but their prime time in the late eighties. To notice the change and the more electronic sound is easy. "Innocent" really is a pearl and clearly a potential club hit. After that, "I Want You Now" follows and this one is also a catchy piece of music.
There is a melancholic layer surrounding the entire album and sometimes I come to think about the album "Hidden Faces", which probably is the Clan of Xymox album most similar to this one. "Notes from the Underground" is more even, the best songs on this album reach a level no other bands comes near to. There are really great songs here, and the overall impression is outstanding. When it comes to Clan of Xymox, that is what we expect anyway. The conclusion is that this is a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Full of musical surprises and a must get.......2006-01-30

Another brilliant album by clan of xymox. You can imediately tell its their newest album ( year 2000 that is ) because of the new eletronic sounds heard as soon as you begin you play the first track, be warned though, i thought there was something wrong with my CD player in the beginning of the first track, innocent. The vocals are much clearer on this album and the lyrics seem to differ too. Its more of an album based on the idea of listening to the sounds rather than the vocals. Its a mellow and relaxing album with a racey track at the end, titled The same dream with added female vocals giving a nice ending to the album. Its a beautiful album with the darkwave influences still there. Personaly i like the tracks innocent and anguish the best. Mysterium is certainly a weird track but pleaseing to whoever listens to it. The bass seems to toned down a bit, as you cant hear it as well in this album. A great album altogether, full of musical surprises and a must get for any dedicated clan of xymox fan like myself.

4 out of 5 stars Techno Dance a la Xymox.......2006-08-23

The last of the dance albums by Xymox, this one is darker than their last few albums and hints at the return to their original sound which is done much better in subsequent albums. A great album for a Halloween dance, with just enough "slow" songs to encourage the wall flowers to slow dance. Not my favorite work, but interesting in an evolutionary way. Like most Xymox albums, this one sounds best at night. Try it with the top down ripping along a lonely stretch of highway. Warning: If you are depressed or recently ended a relationship, this album will hit you right between the eyes. It feels great, but it hurts as well. You know what I mean. Indulge yourself and check it out. Just be sure to refill your medication and hide the knives.

    5 out of 5 stars There's no tomorrow.......2006-03-17

Clan of Xymox is one of my favorite goth bands in recent years. I just love Ronny Mooring's deep, hypnotic vocals. He reminds me of Sisters of Mercy's Andrew Eldritch at times. I recently bought the band's last studio album "Farewell" after I heard samples of the title track on their MySpace page. I don't know why I didn't buy this cd when it first came out three years ago but I am glad I finally did. As much as I enjoyed "Notes From the Underground", I definitely found "Farewell" to be a much stronger effort. I love the blend of goth melodies and EBM beats on the cd. The production is impeccable. I can hear Ronny's voice very clearly. The title track is easily my favorite song with its beautiful lyrics like "Farewell affectionate brothers, you won't see me again". Another great song is "There's No Tomorrow" with its pounding dance beats, searing guitar licks, and Ronny's vocals making for a killer combination. There wasn't a single song on the entire cd that I didn't care for. All of them are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars another exceptional Clan of Xymox release........2006-01-30

Ronny Moorings returns with another exceptional Clan of Xymox release. As much as I like past CoX releases, this Farewell CD is the best yet. While this is an overall gothic recording, the use of electronic programming is greater than ever before.

The songs are made up of frantic sequencing, heavy bass beats, guitars, haunting melodies and Moorings' great deep and clear singing. Most of the tracks are energetic and would be great out on the dance floor. The biggest surprise is the synth-pop direction Moorings took with some of the songs. These especially stand out in my opinion, and I would like see Moorings go more this direction in the future with CoX.

In addition to some dark synth-pop style tracks, there's gothic rock and darkwave songs included on the CD as well. The gothic rock tracks are less electronic and more guitar heavy. And the darkwave songs are a little too slow for my tastes, but the inclusion of female backing vocals is a nice touch.

There's a good helping of variety on this CD, and it all works well together. I personally enjoy the electronic club tracks the most, but I find everything delivered here enjoyable overall. If you like gothic music of any kind, this CD can't be missed.

5 out of 5 stars better than anything before.......2006-01-09

better than anything before and I mean it. This band is not affraid to innovate themselves and at the smae time not afraid to go back to their roots once and a while. A great , great masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars There is no tomorrow without Clan Of Xymox.......2005-12-15

There is no tomorrow without Clan Of Xymox for sure. This album contains the perfect balance for me, a motion trip from here to eternity. Simply beautiful songs , catchy tunes , danceable tracks, heartfelt songs, in short a masterpiece.
Why there is no image available on amazon is beyond me since they are offering this album...

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest New Wave album of the eighties........1998-12-16

This album is what eigthies New Wave is all about to me. The sythetic but melodious sounds of this Band were at their peak with this Album. Later Albums were very good, but never quite got the same response from me. I have owned this masterpiece on Album and CD. I am now forced to buy it again because my previous copy was taken from my vehicle. I am not even thinking twice about replacing it. It is a must own.

5 out of 5 stars Best dutch "Weltschmerz" ever made.......1998-10-19

A small room filled with (too much) people all dressed in black, a few lights , the sweet smell of grass and beer and "A Day" from Xymox ordering everybody to "Wave". I spent many a night in such an environment dancing to this song which for me still is one of the greatest "New wave" songs of the eighties. But not only "A Day" (together with "7th time" defenitely the most danceable) is great. Other songs like "Stranger" or "Stumble and Fall" were ideal to accompany me through many a candle-lit night were I dwelt in self-pitty or "depression". Ten years later I still can get back to the feelings I had in those days listening and dancing to Xymox. That can only mean (Clan of) Xymox has to be a great album.....

    5 out of 5 stars a great return from a great band.......2006-01-30

Amsterdam man Ronny Moorings reformed old band Clan Of Xymox in 1997 and released this, the first Moorings album to go out under the COX banner since 'Medusa' (1987). Here Moorings goes back to his roots, picking up where 'Medusa' left off yet updating the sound for a new era. Does this album make up for lost time? I think so, yes. 'HF' spawned two hit singles, the crushing 'Out Of The Rain' and the poignant 'This World'. This album was such a return to form for Moorings that it inspired old label 4AD to re-release their classic debut album, 'Clan Of Xymox'. This album should satiate anybody into Depeche Mode, The Sisters Of Mercy or even The Cure. Besides the two big songs, 'HF' features the class guitar-blast 'Sing A Song' as well as the Dead Can Dance-ish 'November' and seven other strong efforts like 'Wailing Wall' All in all `Hidden Faces' was a brilliant return to form for the Clan.

5 out of 5 stars Who You Calling A Liar?.......2005-11-24

It begins with a fanfare bigger than Spinal Tap's collective hair. And as is usual with Ronny Mooring's outfit (his "band", and probably his chosen attire as well) much of this comeback debut comes off as a bit contrived and melodramatic - - not to say overwrought; there is no "Agonized By Love" this time around. But it probably depends on how seriously you take it. All minor keys and synthblasts, when it's good ("Going Round '97"; "Out Of The Rain"; "Special Friends") it's exhilarating; when it's bad ("This World"; the egregiously phony "Wailing Wall") it's just plain bad. In between are atmospheric instrumentals like "November", which punctuates its lead from your favorite funeral dirge with fake oboe, and the self-descriptive "Piano Piece" which should more correctly be titled "My Favorite Synth Piano-Patch Piece". Some songs pound ("Sing A Song"; "It's All A Lie" - -hey, Ronny fesses up!!) while others ("Your Vice") sort of float along in synthetic serenity aiming, I suppose, at detached irony. One of the best tracks, though, isn't even on this CD: the instrumental "Flatlands", included as a bonus track on the "Out Of The Rain/Going Round '97" single. Okay then, not a total miss. But personally I miss Anka Wolbert. Oh, and Peter Wooten. Guess I take it a little too seriously, eh.

5 out of 5 stars Dali's novel of the pain and pleasure of obsessive love........1999-04-22

This exploration of a doomed and destructive relationship owes much to both the Marquise de Sade and Baron von Masoch as Dali narrates the tale of his two main characters' descent into the darkest recesses of emotional dependancy and desire. Many of the elements that inspired Dali's art are here and so this book is a must for any fans of surrealism in general and Dali in particular.

I took a break from even trying any of their new stuff after Headclouds but this was fantastic. I'll probably not be afraid to give Creatures a shot after hearing how Ronnie's gotten back to the bands roots while keeping the style current.

    4 out of 5 stars I like this CD.......2005-12-29

I acquired this CD a long time ago, in Europe, and I notice that on it, track 8 is titled HYPOCRITE (running time 4.43) instead of TROUBLED SOUL.

I also want to mention for people complaining for the album not being available in the US that if they make a search (popular music) on amazon with:
    xymox hidden faces
    + GO
they will be presented with other (import) versions of this cd, AVAILABLE FOR BUYING on amazon. (also with track 8 titled HYPOCRITE).

I tried to listen to samples of other clan of xymox cds, but could not find something as appealing as this one (maybe the samples are too shorts).
What I like in this one is a dark and sad side.

( I'm rating the music here, not the lyrics: )
My favourite songs are tracks :
10 Piano piece (just a 1 minute 4 hands piano piece I would say)
    11 Your vice
    12 November

    then come
    3 Going round 97'
    4 The child in me

    then
    1 Out of the rain
    6 It's all a lie
    13 The story ends

but the rest is good too, whith the average quality quite outstanding.
(I sometime buy a CD just for 1 song: here there are plenty worth the buying)

I don't listen to this CD very often, but when I do I'm never disappointed, because it really has something original.

Why this album is not available in the US is beyond me but I guess that is the way with back catalogue these days in the States. This album is their perfect come back album in 1997 , back to their old roots of 4AD. The album is really diverse and now I can see why. Their later releases diplay such a variety of craftmanship and style that Ronny Moorings is a total genius who can write any song he likes and make it sound his own.
This Album contain 3 club hits Like "OUT OF THE RAIN", THIS WORLD and the re recording of Going Round , this time in a more agressive manner.
The rest of the album is full of gem like ambient songs like It's All A Lie, Wailing Wall, Your Vice , November, The Story Ends etc.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of 90's Clan of Xymox.......2002-10-27

I'm suprised that this album doesn't get much attention, because it should, this was the album before they started sounding so much like the Sisters of Mercy. It has a more rock-sounding edge than thier previous albums, but they still retain their original style. The songs on this CD are varied from rockers like "Out of the Rain" and "Sing a Sing" to the more danceable/ electronic "Going Around 97" and "Child in Me" and the songs that are in between both goth-rock and dance like "This World" and "Special Friends". THIS IS CLAN OF XYMOX IN THEIR OWN STYLE THAT MADE FAMOUS. If you want to hear what they sound like in the 90's get this one first!

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible stuff.......2002-02-13

This is supposedly a marked comeback as they reintroduced Clan of to their name and a damn good album it is . From the crashing Out Of The Rain to the haunting Wailing Wall and Piano Piece to The Story Ends this is one of the best Xymox release and is much better than the follow up Creatures which while good can be a little too much at times and be somewhat over the top . Nevertheless it is fantastic to see a great band as good as this still going strong .
