so good.......2007-04-10
For years I was led to believe this was Eric Clapton's worst album, and that the very first track was the only one worth hearing. NOT TRUE. Every song is quite enjoyable. Just because it was recorded in the 80's when the recording industry was giving us big drum machines and loud guitars doesn't mean this album is horrible. It's still Eric Clapton. Granted, it's the studio version of Eric Clapton which produced normal-sounding songs that range from ballads to light rockers, but it's still a darn good listen.
Produced by Phil Collins / Templeton - rebirth of Clapton.......2007-01-08
(1985) I think this album is a new dawning for Clapton. He's clean & reinvigorated & for the first time really focused on production & muscianship. First of all, Clapton & Collins (by this time) had been friends for almost ten years. They had played togther with John Martyn (1981), Steven Bishop (1981), & on Collins's Face Value (1981). So clapton didn't just recruit collins because he was the most sought-after producer/drummer of the 80s. He recruited him because he deeply respected Phil's ability to produce, motivate musicians, unlock hidden talent, & take them to a higher peak of perfection. Another notable about Collins was he was never a drunk or junky. He was a music man & very professional. 12-16 hour studio days aren't possible if you're all screwed up on dope. Now that Clapton was clean from heroin he could seriously focus on his music & there was noone better to recruit then Collins(known as the busiest man in Rock). Clapton's best attribute is being humble & modest. he has played with so many people because he wants to constantly change & improve. This is why Phil Collins produced & toured with him. ted Templeton (van halen / doobie brothers) also produced 3 of the 11 tracks here (forever man / something's happening / see what love can do). There are alot of musicians on this one including nathan east (bass), greg phillinganes (keyboards), john robinson (brand x & phil collins touring keyboardist), jamie oldaker (drums), jeff porcoro of TOTO (drums), ray cooper (percussion), steve lukather of TOTO (guitar), Donald duck Dunn (bass), marcy levy (long time clapton vocalist/cowriter), & many others. The opening track "She's Waiting" explodes with strong drumming & hard rhythm keyboard tracks indicating that Phil Collins was conducting this train & Clapton was more than happy to let him. Even though Jamie Oldaker was drumming there's no doubt who was fuelling his rhythm patterns (Collins). There is also a great bluesy track called same old blues that is more or less a 1980s blues song that is powerful & compelling. Throughout the album you can hear the strong Phil Collins trademark drum patterns & production. On "Tangled in Love" the sequencer pattern used is so genesis-like that you would think that rutherford & banks (genesis pals) are in the studio as well. Clapton's vocal performances are also the strongest he's ever recorded again indicating that Collins must have pushed him to push himself vocally. The collins/clapton relationship would continue on the road (phil at drums) at LIVE AID, on tour with East & Phillinganes (producing an awesome 1986 Montreaux Festival appearance), & on another album in 1986 called August which would prove to be another huge album. A great producer can bring out amazing potential in a musician & that is what Phil Collins did with Clapton & also Robert Plant. Clapton & Collins continued to work together on other albums including But Seriously & Journeyman. This relationship, I think, created some of the best produced & most mature music of the 1980s & early 1990s. At this time (1985-86) Collins was very busy balancing his own solo work (no jacket required - 1985) & genesis's 1986 invisible touch but he would find breaks during tours & albums to work with clapton again & again indicating that their relationship was very important to them.
Clapton's Mid-80's Comeback Album.......2006-05-09
I remember the buzz surrounding this album back in the mid-80's touting that "Eric Clapton is back!" There were full page ads in the music magazines at the time, mixed between articles on Ratt's new album, and whether or not David Lee Roth would be leaving Van Halen. Where did Eric Clapton fit into the scheme of things back in 1985?
The musical climate had changed dramatically from when he had topped the charts in the '70's, and his two new 80's albums ("Money and Cigarettes" and "Another Ticket") made nary a whimper. So to help give him some direction, Clapton enlisted the help of Phil Collins, who could do no wrong at the time on the music charts. So that's why this album is so heavy on the slick 80's production and Phil Collins drum sound. Let's face it, back when this was released, the slick 80's sound wasn't a bad thing!
The painfully obvious thing about this album is that it is indeed a transition album, showing an artist trying to acclimate to a new sound. One half of the album is very pop sounding ("She's Waiting," "Forever Man," "Never Make You Cry"), while the other half is still in '70's mode ("Knock on Wood," "Same Old Blues," "Something's Happening"). It never quite works and seems somewhat awkward at times. Yet when he shines, she shines brightly. "Forever Man" and "She's Waiting" proved to be the biggest hits off the album, showing that Clapton was still relevant in the 80's.
My favorite track is actually one of the sleeper songs on the album, a beautiful little tune called "Never Make You Cry." It's easy to dismiss as sticky-sweet fluff, but there's just something about it that puts it up there with "Wonderful Tonight." Not in the same league, but definitely up there.
a good album and not "purist"!.......2006-02-25
However it's not between the best works of Claptom, Behind the Sun is a good album. This album is better than the "weak" and "boring" Backless, slowhand ,Just one night and Ocean Boulevard. He has powerful as well as "romantic"songs. In short,a good album!!!!
One of Claptons Best.......2005-11-19
Behind the Sun was Eric Claptons second album on Duck records.
At this time he is moving into a new direction.
This is his first album with Nathan East and Greg Phillinganes.
Nathan East has been with Eric Clapton ever since.
On this CD you have the hit song Forever Man which also had a video that had alot of playing time on MTV at the time.
Other songs of note are She's Waiting , Same Old Blues, Tangled in Love and a cover of the song Knock on Wood. Just like a Prisoner is haunting and has a killer guitar solo as well.
Phil Collins also works with Clapton on this CD and adds drums as well.
This is a must for any Clapton fan and a great album.
I would recommend this to anyone

If you think the percussionist's role is merely to supply rhythmic backbone, you haven't encountered the phenomenon named Evelyn Glennie. The category-defying Scottish musician has spent her career pursuing the unique route of percussion virtuoso, turning music into an intensely hyperactive verb. Glennie's sound world encompasses a global, pan-cultural panoply of music makers in addition to the standard drum kit: watergongs, bamboo sticks, ceramic bells, car exhaust pipes, finger cymbals, thundersheet--to name a few from the arsenal she uses here (Glennie reportedly owns over 1,000 percussive instruments). Even in her interpretations of works by other composers--such as James MacMillan's Veni, Veni, Emmanuel or the Grammy-nominated Concerto for Percussion by Joseph Schwantner--Glennie scoops out plentiful opportunities for improvisation; but the concept of Shadow Behind the Iron Sun was to allow Glennie to lock herself up in her studio and improvise the entire album. With the help of her collaborator, pop mixmaster Michael Brauer, the result is a fantastically textured, mesmerizing adventure for the ears and the imagination. Despite a vague ambition to explore "as many moods as possible" (Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead was apparently the source for some of the picturesque titles here, such as "Attack of the Glow Worm" and "Wind Horse"), the variety and juxtaposition of colors evoke a cinematically gripping, almost synesthetic sense of atmosphere--yet another evolution of "program music" into the 21st century? Much of the fun is in experiencing sounds whose origin remains mysterious, as Glennie performs her one-woman-as-orchestra wonders. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
music i hear with my body .......2005-03-09
I love this album!!! Evelyn Glennie is the most profound percussionist I have ever heard. Her music penetrates my body: sometimes I feel it in my heart, sometimes in my solar plexis. I feel it in my soul. This album can be enjoyed over and over and over. Thank You Evelyn Glennie! Big Gratitude!
Beyond Belief.......2004-06-16
I went to a solo concert of hers because I had heard what I thought must be hype of her wonder. I was totally and utterly destroyed by her performance. She has complete technical perfection, tremendous athletic ability (yes percussion demands of the body), personal charm, and dramatic zest. Many of the albums I listened to after disappointed me because she clearly held herself within the strict measure of the others she performed with. I suspect her deafness makes her fearful of any rubatto in an orchestral setting. This album is the only one that begins to give a sense of her god-like gifts.
You don't listen to it, you experience it.......2001-03-01
This CD is a true experience, similar to Charles Ives' "New England Holidays". The range of instruments Glennie uses and creates brings to mind Mickey Hart's statement about drummers being desperate and doing anything to produce sounds. Her music gets into your mind and body. It's appealing enough that my son, a rap fan, sat fascinated while "Land of Venden" was playing. His comment, "This is almost scary!", leads to my opinion that her talent is almost scary. Do yourself a favor and buy this one, it provides great mental and emotional rejuvenation.
Something a little different.......2000-09-23
Even if percussion sans so-called melodic instruments isn't what you think of when selecting a cd you've got to listen to this. Ms Glennie creates quite a melodic and dramatic tapestry and draws the listener right into the middle of it. Yes, it does take a few listenings to penetrate to the gist of it but that only enhances the genuine beauty contained here. Perhaps that is a given in any deeply creative work.
A near-perfect album.......2000-04-08
Even my dog liked it -- mesmerized by the music, staring at the stereo like the mutt in the RCA logo.
Solo percussion is, admittedly, an acquired taste. The song samples here give you a reasonable flavor of the album. If you don't like them, don't buy it.
At the same time, Glennie has done more than anybody to advance the art, the possibilities, and the popularity of percussion. (I saw her perform a snare solo encore last year that brought the audience to its feet.) In this album, she operates with more freedom and pushes more boundaries than in anything she's done to date. Yet it's still an approachable and genuinely exciting collection of music.

For some, outfits like producer Nick Bracegirdle's Chicane are not easy to swallow. Isolating the more jubilant properties of trance, the beat is a light bounce, levitating above club-dance brainlessness, sounding like a house music hybrid meant for sparkling sunshine instead of dark and sweaty warehouses. They exist in an idealized, pseudo-enlightened fairy tale filled with bright colors and youthful beauty. But that's not the problem. What rankles purists and picky fans is the audacity with which these "techno" artists go after the unconverted common folk, dragging electronic music out of its druggy, "in-crowd" pretensions. Bracegirdle and contemporaries like Olive, Sneaker Pimps, and BT (the last, most noticeably on his Movement in Still Life) are waging a turf war on the boundaries between techno and pop music, each using different tactics and borrowing from different sources. Chicane throws out an especially cutting salvo in the battle here, and it's a doozy. None other than Bryan Adams lends his raspy tenor to the subtle grooves and euphoric dreaminess of "Don't Give Up." It's one thing for Liam Gallagher to lend his pipes to a Chemical Brothers track, or for BT to tap Tori Amos for the ubiquitous club hit "Blue Skies," but Bryan Adams? Is this heresy? Or an ingenious use of vocal color that yields an incredibly hummable dance anthem? Maybe it's best not to analyze What It All Means. Just sit back and enjoy the summery grooves, trusting these ongoing musical inspirations to become whatever they need to be. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
My favorite album of all time! Absolutely perfect!.......2006-10-23
This is the best electronic music album I have EVER heard. This is the stuff that changes peoples perceptions about chillout, house, and trance music. Every person I have ever played this to has bought a copy, and sings the same praises about it. From its beautiful, melodic soundscapes, to crisp and perfect mastering and sound quality, to it's diverse and well thought out track sequencing. Melodic and ethereal downtempo, coastline breaks, beach and sunset inspired house...It's all here, in all it's cinematic brilliance. This is my favorite album of all time from any genre. If you have ever wanted an album you can play all the way through over and over again, this is it.
"Saltwater", here in both club and ambient versions, is the kind of song you NEED to hear before you die. It is the last song I want to hear before I pass, and any music lover or dance music fans should have this album in their life.
Great Buy.......2006-03-19
This album is one of Chicane's best. There is a great diversity of tracks, but the album is a bit short. If you like trance, you'll love this album.
Electronic contemporary classic!.......2006-01-10
If you like easy listening electronic music, Im pretty sure that this albums in now consider as a classic, or a must have, name it as you want to. This albums is great. Melodic, strong beats, nice arrangements, great colaborations (Bryan Adams,Maire Brennan )My favorite song is autumn tactics it's wonderful, it's an album to listen in the beach through the sunset having a daiquiri, you oughta love it.
The only reason I didn't gave it 5 stars it's because I think it should have mixed transitions between tracks.
Not a bad song on the Album.......2005-12-10
This CD is like a buffet there are many delicious sounds on the album and you find yourself going back for more and more. Very Earthy and very open for the moment. The effort in each track is remarkable if your are a person who appreciates the sounds of instruments played with talent and unduplicated style. Something for everyone or something for your many sides.
Great album........2005-08-16
Behind the Sun is a wonderful trance album. Almost every song is worth listening to. No Ordinary Morning is one of the most haunting and beautiful songs you'll ever hear.

A pleasant surprise.......2007-03-08
I'm one of those The Sound of Music addicted, having lost the track of how many times I've seen it whatever the format is. Therefore, it was basically for curiosity that I've bought this CD. It's a fine recording that takes you to a typical, cosy family reunion. The male voices are not impressive and I wouldn't include the flute solos in the CD. But the final result is very pleasant, excellent to listen in the car while you're driving in the countryside (before lunch, of course).
The original sound of their music. .......2006-01-15
The original von Trapp Family's twenty years of touring and performing internationally had finished, and Maria Augusta von Trapp had written their story in three books and begun several decades of missionary work in New Guinea by the time "The Sound of Music" hit Broadway, and Julie Andrews later sang about her favorite things in a top-earning film. I don't know if the original von Trapp Family benefitted from show and film royalties; they certainly deserved to, for they worked very hard perfecting, under their conductor Dr Franz Wasner, their natural ensemble and music-making talents.
The results may be heard in this first-class CD reissue of recordings they made in New York in 1952 and 1956. The family amassed a large repertoire, collecting items while touring, for example "Waltzing Mathilda" from Australia. The selection here includes a cross-section (loosely titled "Folk Songs") and some of their instrumental items involving recorders, cello and harpsichord. Perhaps the items from their rich Austrian culture are the most satisfying.
This is the second DGG CD release of their recordings. Duration 52 minutes. I recall from my LP collecting days, that there are enough Trapp Family recordings to fill a third CD. I look forward to it.

I think that far from the maddening crowds is a better album, but I love anything Chicane. Their music is just so soothing to listen to.
Chicane's the Best.......2007-03-08
I've do not own any Chicane CD's (they're not really available in South Africa), but I got 2 songs from a friend "Saltwater" and "No Ordinary Morning" - my favourite songs! So I decided to get this CD and I'm definitely not disappointed! Although I was hoping to get more vocals, as in the 2 songs I had. But still a great buy for a Chicane fan! And the DVD is a bonus :)

Chicane's re-release of the 2nd album Behind the Sun is a great album which includes the music videos released from the album (mostly which are hard to find) its is kind of a shame that they did not include all the videos from chicane. but hey ill take what i can get. definitly worth getting the dvd edition instead of just the album.

The DVD contained in this package utilizes the PAL video format. So, you'll be unable to view it on your television unless it can decode a PAL signal. One way to get around this problem is through the use of your computer's DVD drive and a free Windows program named, "DVD Shrink." I was able to successfully view the videos on my computer using DVD Shrink version 3.1.

so good.......2007-04-10

Spriited Blending of Voices.......2000-08-29
This exciting collection is parimarily of Russian folk songs, though there are some actual compositions by Russian composers, such as Glinka and Rimsky-Korsakov. In listening to these beautiful recordings, if you can think past the regime, which the Red Army represented, and concentrate upon the artistic performances which the individuals and the group present, you should have no difficulty enjoying the fine quality present on this CD.
Russian folk songs sung with passion.......1999-06-06
The little bit of this CD that I heard sounded just like I expected it to . . . sung with feeling and passion. The red army chorus has been singing for over 50 years and are as good a chorus as you will find anywhere. It was a pleasure to hear songs that I remember from my youth.
