4 out of 5 stars Flash That Dance.......2007-04-11

Irene Cara is one of the rare breeds in early 80's dance music, in the fact that she can really sing. In fact not only could she sing back in the 80's, about two years ago she was on Baby One More Time, a strange little TV show where stars of yesterday would come on and perform one of their old hits plus a hit by a more contemporary artist and then they'd be voted on, on the Irene issue, this girl won - though Juice Newton was a close runner up to me. Anyhoos, this is probably the most famous of Irene's small output - coming out just after the mega hit Flashdance...What A Feelin' from the Flashdance film, this album, obviously named after the hit, also contains her next set of top 40 hits (including two more top tens) "Why Me?", "The Dream (Hold On To Your Dream)" and "Breakdance." With the help of Giorgio Moroder, Irene had her little putter on the dance vibe of the time. All mostly dancey rock pop so popular at the time, What A Feelin' was amazingly enough not a very big hit as an album despite launching four hit singles. The other tracks on the albums include a few of the rocky ballads of the 80's though Irene's smoky vocals and fairly interesting lyrics save these from falling too far into the cheese fest of 1983. The highlight (to me at least) is a little synthy pop song called "Romance '83" and it's the very reason I just had to get my hands on a copy of this remastered CD (it's out of print of course). The song set to a technoish beat tells the story of lady and her man who is "You're busy when I call you up on the telephone/ You're playing those Atari games and I'm all alone/ What I need is Romance '83" the bridge is awesome as she sings, "I look back at a time when the world was so young/ a beautiful ecology/ Satisfied with only the land and the trees/ instead we mass produce machines" blaming the technology of the 80's for ruining love while a robotic voice chants "Input/output/ microprocessor dealy/ VCF/ VCA/ modulation decay", an absolute gas of the past as the technology then is nothing compared to what we deal with everyday. My only real complaint of the CD which contains bonus tracks is the version of "Why Me?" included as the album track isn't really the album or even single version, it's the long dance mix. The ultimate highlight of this rare collection is a song called "Talk Too Much", a driving synthy rock number about our girl trying to get into her man's pants but he's always talking is super exciting, the strange thing is it was only available as a B-side which is odd as it's by far the best album track on here. Also notable is the extra bonus remix tracks that appear here include the title track with a bunch of different lyrics. The original song is still better but it's still interesting.

2 out of 5 stars This CD Is Just Whatever.......2006-06-16

I like Irene Cara. She's a pretty good actress and a good singer. However, this CD was boring and the only song that grabbed me was "Flashdance. . .What a Feeling." Other than that, I wouldn't waste my money on this. Get something from Angela Bofil instead.

5 out of 5 stars awesome.......2005-09-04

everybody knows these songs though they may not necessarily know the artist. As soon as I heard what a feeling I knew the words and all, and breakdance was a hit I heard constantly when I was younger so her music is familiar to many

4 out of 5 stars Why the 12" for Why Me?????????????.......2005-06-17

Any particular reason the idiots at this record label slapped a 12 inch remix of Why Me on this cd instead of the 3 1/2 minute radio version that was a hit??? The 12" mix would be nice as one of the extra tracks and we could EASILY do without an instrumental version of Flashdance, especially since that song is on here twice already (as a single and as a remix). I despise record companies that do this crap. This cd is incomplete without the single version of a hit song. It has the single and the remix for 3 other songs, so whats the deal with Why Me?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome 80s Album, But Very Underrated.......2004-12-30

Irene Cara definitely should have gained more star status than she did. Her absolute best song is "Flashdance...What A Feeling", which is the title track of the album. It originally appeared on the equally excellent "Flashdance" soundtrack. This is definitely a great album.

"Flashdance...What A Feeling"--One of the greatest songs ever written. It is the best song on the album, and in my opinion the best song of the 80s (I'm only 14, but I'm a huge 80s fan). It is about the passion of dancing, and how the dancer feels while dancing. Not to mention that it goes perfectly with the finale from the "Flashdance" movie. Once you hear it, it will stay with you until the day you die. This is definitely the best song on the CD. 5/5

"Why Me? (12" Mix)"--Another highlight of the album. She sings about devoting herself to someone, only to have him break her heart. Despite the sad subject, it is definitely a dance song. The remix goes on a bit longer than it should, but that's ok. 5/5

"Breakdance"--My second favorite song on the album. I really don't think I have to explain what the song is about, but I will say that it is very catchy and dancey. It is bound to get stuck in your head. 5/5

"The Dream"--Very cheesy song, but I still like it. It was in another movie that I'm sure no one's ever heard of called "D.C. Cab", and is about not giving up your dream no matter what you are going through. Despite the cheesy lyrics, it is still a great song. 5/5

"You Took My Life Away"--just an OK song. I'm not too crazy about it, but it is still nice to listen to sometimes. 4/5

"Keep On"--This is another great song from the album, and another somewhat cheesy one. It is about believing in yourself, and is very similar to "The Dream". One of my favorites. 5/5

"Romance '83"--A very catchy and outdated song. It talks about Atari, and the title even has the year in it. It is a very electronic song, and my favorite part is when she sounds like a robot and sings kind of monotone-like: "Input, output, microprocessor delay/VCI, VCA, modulation for decay/DIN synch to control/And invert over stereo/Set mode channel, two selectors, audio schemactic vectors/". See what I mean by electronic? It is very catchy and gets stuck in your head almost instantly. 5/5

"Cue Me Up"--A good song. The chorus is basically "Cue Me Up For Your Love". Not as groundbreaking as "What A Feeling" or as catchy as "Breakdance", but still worth a listen. 3.5/5

"Receiving"--a boring, yet not boring song. The words are pretty much repeated too much which is what makes it kinda boring, but the song is still pretty good. 4/5

"You Were Made For Me"--The ballad of the album, it is a pretty song. The title pretty much explains the meaning of the song. 4/5

"Talk Too Much"--A bonus track not on the original album. It is about a guy that drives Irene crazy because he doesn't shut up. She tries to tolerate it, but she can't after a while. Another OK song. 4/5

"Breakdance Remix"--Awesome! A longer version of Breakdance with slightly different music. Very good addition to the album. 5/5

"The Dream Remix"--Basically applies to the same thing as the Breakdance remix. Just like the original, just longer with slightly different music. 5/5

"Flashdance...What A Feeling Remix"--This remix is awesome! It is much longer than the original (about 7 minutes long), extra musical intermissions. I wish that they would have included the music from the finale in the movie with the synthesizers that appear as she is breakdancing. I still love the remix though! 5/5

"Flashdance...What A Feeling Instrumental"--It's basically just the music of the song, but extended to 8 minutes. It is OK, but tends to get boring since it's just 8 minutes of the same music. But because its the Flashdance music, I still listen to it. 4/5

This album didn't sell too well in 1983, only because the title song was too overplayed and everyone already had the soundtrack, so they didn't exactly rush out to buy this album. It is definitely a great album though, so you should definitely buy it if you like 80s music or just the title tune.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD if you can find it!.......2002-01-30

This is vintage Hampton String Quartet. Recorded while they were still on RCA, this album shows the group's early potential. To see how they have grown, compare the "Stairway to Heaven" on this CD with the "Stairway to Heaven" on HSQ's independent CD "Sympathy For The Devil". The rock string quartets capture the vitality and energy of rock much better than other attempts by classical musicians. A great CD!

4 out of 5 stars Mozart Meets Steppenwolf.......2000-06-22

This is a great CD for studying and working to. It's all of your favorite songs but done classical style which helps improve on mental abilities. I listen to this while I am at work or studying in my dormroom. The Hampton Quartet really pulls through with this one. 4 stars!

      Album Description

Billy' Mitchell's songs are inspired by the whimsy of Jimmy Buffett, the wit of Shel Silverstein, the eccentricity of John Prine with a dash of Spike Jones thrown in for good measure. "Billy's music is like a trip to Key West via "The Twilight Zone"; great fun, full of musical surprises." says Ed Dillon, former touring member of The Clancy Brothers (Irish Folk legends).

The songs were written during a stay on the Gulf of Mexico's Florida coast and not only captured the carefree spirit of the region, but reflect Billy's "the glass is half-full" philosophy. The 12 song ebut CD of original songs spans genres from Beach tunes, to Bluegrass, to Folk, R & B and Country. The songs are classic lyric based, story songs written from an angst-free, post adolescent point of view. Not to be taken seriously, the CD is full of serious fun. "What's so Bad About Feelin' Good?" was produced at Ark Studios in Fairhaven, MA and features 14 guest musicians.
