"Disco Science," his toweringly provocative debut single, demonstrated Mirwais's disco roots, but the French producer distorted and twisted that yardstick out of all recognition via wild pitch-shifting and a taste for acid bass lines. Production only emphasizes this penchant for reinvention by taking some of the most popular sounds from late '70s and early '80s dance floors--Moroder beats, Vocoders, analogue synth sounds--and willfully hammering them into fresh shapes on numbers such as "Naive Song" and "Junkie's Prayer." Mirwais's skills brought him to the attention of Madonna, who kidnapped his production prowess for her Music album. She returns the favor with this album's centerpiece, "Paradise Not for Me." This exquisite blend of French monologue and treated English vocal, all married to swelling synths, indicates why Mirwais was seen as the hottest, most chic Parisian electronic producer from an apparently endless line of talent--including Daft Punk, Air, and Cassius--that continues to emanate from the city. Mirwais offers a nod to his compatriots on the Daft Punk-like "I Can't Wait," which matches a pulverizing stop-start rhythm to buzz-saw bleeps, as well as to New York's turntablist scene on "Definitive Beat," a juddering breakbeat layered with skidding scratch work. A devastatingly original album from a true pioneer. --Mike Pattenden

His beginnings as a violinist long behind him, Chicago-born Andrew Bird has been sculpting ever more complex and convincing musical worlds since his first album in 1997. On his fifth release, Bird offers up no answers to the mysteries in the world around us, but does take on the thornier elements with poetic verve. The instrumentation is bracingly inventive, but never for mere shenanigans or showmanship. The songs are each a perfectly formed vignette. And he's a world class whistler; not the loud summoning blast, but the supple and nuanced vibrato-laced melodicism of a master. There is no shortage of utterly riveting songs here. They work their magic on their own believable terms, without a hint of cloying nostalgia or riff-fueled seduction. - David GreenbergerAlbum Description
Andrew Bird is a previously unimaginable combination of songwriter, violinist, guitarist, vocalist and whistler. His unfailingly unique and striking music has been dumbfounding us for years. Bird's first studio album in nearly two years, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, is his second on Righteous Babe Records. The album follows Weather Systems, his critically-acclaimed mini-LP, released in spring 2003.The recording sessions for Mysterious Production saw Bird scrap the album three times and travel between studios in Chicago, Los Angeles and his own home studio on a farm in Northern Illinois. The album took final shape with the production help of David Boucher, whose credits include Paul Westerberg, Lisa Loeb, and Randy Newman. Bird plays most of the instruments on Mysterious Production, and is joined by a handful of special guests complimenting his already lush sonic palette. The results are magnificent, a powerhouse of a record dealing with nothing less than the mysteries of childhood, creativity and modern science - epic in scope and minute in detail.
Equally impressive is Bird's solo live show at which, with the aid of a sampling pedal, the songwriter takes his often dense, orchestrated recordings and rewrites them anew each night, adding hypnotic layers of instruments to his vocals and other-worldly whistling - you have to see it to believe it.

Such smart music it makes feel lesser........2006-12-02
intricate and satisfying.......2006-11-04
The instrumentation is delicate, layered, modest and surprising. Whistling solos suddenly soar out from the vibes/violin/keyboard/guitar harmonies. Bird playfully juxtaposes folk, orchestrated pop, 60s beat poetry, gypsy rock, jazz.
The lyrics are unexpectedly clever, yet sung gently and offhandedly. Bird's themes tend to be a bit apocalyptic. He gently and gracefully describes how we'll be blown back the 70s (by "the whole board of trustees, all those Don Quixotes") in Sovay, how we destroy ourselves with self-conscious neuroses in Measuring Cups, and what the end of the world will be like in Opposite Day. In Fake Palindromes he gravitates to more of a stream-of-consciousness style, which is brilliantly continued in the interlude at the end of Opposite Day. He throws in a tidbit of gospel in the ending of Masterfade when he sings "when you're lying on the ground / staring up at that inverted compass / I mean Christ who Knows?"
Andrew Bird brings together disparate strands of inspiration from unlikely sources across genres, and the result is uniquely moving. How he is able to so gracefully pull this off is a mystery. One thing we do know though, is that at the end of the world, there will be snacks.

Get it and enjoy it before it goes out of print. .......2007-06-16
I've listened to this CD countless times since I first discovered it in the local library in 1990, and it never fails to amaze, soothe and delight me with each listening. It's helped my children fall asleep when they were younger, bring smiles and peace in the car on trips, and a spring to the step while cooking dinner or, even, breakfast. (It's not what you'd play for a romantic candle light dinner, but with eggs Benedict and mimosas - DEFINITELY.) "Celestial Soda Pop" is an absolute classic; I could listen forever to "Falling in the Garden"; and I can't help but chuckle when I hear "Rhythm in the Pews." Ray hit a home run with this one, and gets my vote for the composers' Hall of Fame on this "swing" alone.

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

The Best American Musical .......2007-07-29
An American Treasure.......2007-03-03
I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.
If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.
The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.
If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.

Thank you, EMI.
I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

My kids went to sleep to his music for years. Now I do.
These are open, airy tunes that play well several times. Lynch's music makes for good background music when I'm working or trying to focus on other things. It doesn't impose itself on my psyche, but is there with its calming sound and interesting point and counterpoint.

I walked into a store one day and this CD was playing on their stereo and I just fell in love with it. I bought it without even looking to see who wrote it. It has wonderful peaks and swells, as well as its share of more somber moments. Overall, I find it to be very robust and stirring. I can be energized by it (and frequently am!) or I can close my eyes and imagine tibetan natives playing this music just for me. Either way, it makes for a very uplifting musical experience, which makes this CD one of my "New Age" favorites.

Soul-touching Music.......2004-12-21
I first really fell in love with this CD when I was going through a loving yet painful relationship. Tears would flow uncontrollably and I would cry loudly for no reason when I was listening to this music. It seems that the music was saying to me that even though there is pain, there is suffering in life, there still is love, meaning, and beauty in it. We just have to accept it.
Unbrain Music.......2003-09-24
Even a cursory listen reveals that his electronic repertoire has moved into second place. Instead, Lynch makes use of his own instrumental skills in tandem with a stellar collection of performers, mostly from the San Francisco Symphony. What you get is still unmistakably Lynch, but with a twist. The instrumentation leaves you unsure if this is intended as 'popular' or 'serious' music - but I suspect that Lynch wanted exactly that conflict so that the listener must fashion his own responses.
Or not, as the case may be. The album title, of course, is a giveaway. We are being invited to listen without the intervention of our heads. A challenge under any circumstances, and Lynch has no intention of helping us by presenting music with uncomplicated content. But whether you think or just react, there is something here which makes this album special.
Not everything here will please any particular listener. I found Ivory to be one of the best compositions Lynch has ever created. Yet on the same album is Mesquite which, to me, is a uncomfortable parody of Southwestern styling. In between lies everything both sincere and pompous. And yet, if you listen carefully, you will here little turns and phrases obviously intended to bind everything together as a whole.
An interesting album, that makes no excuses for itself. Perhaps, going headless is a good idea.

An Heir To The Masters.......2004-12-16
Lynch's music is deeply emotional in the vein of Mozart's "Requiem", Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony", and Rachmaninov's "Prelude in G Minor". The music becomes an invitation to look inside yourself and find that which is better than you thought possible.
Accept the invitation to explore his music, and witness the accomplishments of an extraordinary talent.
Strange Beginnings.......2003-09-22
Lynch was a successful guitarist and lutenist who, after enjoying some success found the pressures too great and retired from the public scene for many years on a personal, spiritual quest. The Sky of Mind is an expression of that period - what we now would label mainstream 'meditation' music. He makes use of both electronic and acoustic components to build something like a combination of Hohvaness's big melodies with Indian Kirtan stylings (repetitive with a mid-point crescendo in tempo and dynamics). Likeable, but not particularily original.
One either likes this kind of music or one doesn't. The lack of thematic development may be great for meditation, but the interest needed to set it apart musically is usually not present. Had Lynch continued to write this was he would have faded into obscurity with many of his fellow artists when New Age music stopped being the rage.
Over the next few albums Lynch complete changed what he was doing. He started using his inner state to generate work instead of using his work to generate an inner state. In doing so he achieved a well-deserved popularity. I'm glad I have this slim CD, but I wouldn't seek it out as a must-have.
Meditative & Soothing.......2003-08-21

A collection of non-beatmixed Tracy Young dance mixes with bland vocals..........2005-10-19
1. it's a lovely day...Erica Jennings (3:42) (very moody, melancholy house, female vocal)
2. solo port u amor...manuel franjo (7:20) (blech! Dreary male latin vocals and another moody mix)
3. New york city...fuman freak (7:38) (dark tribal, with male vocals reminiscent of Byron Stingly. But still subdued...no drama here)
4. wishing you were here...misarah (7:42) (ah...some drama! Still mostly a melancholy house track, with female vocals, but this progressive mix has some nice build ups)
5. bang bang...erica Jennings (6:32) (a cover of a Cher song-which she covered herself at one point-and in all honesty, I would have preferred a remix of her 1987 version. This song is really hokey-making a dance version just for the sake of making a dance version. You'll wanna shoot yourself down after hearing the repetitive "bang bang" line....)
6. Compassionate Buddha...asian heart (6:53) (good music, good build ups and peaks, but not a real vocal track, more like a dub)
7. miracle...charlene Holloway (7:50) (one of the best tribal diva anthems on the disc. Hard and dark.)
8. The world is a stage...terry barber (8:44) (another hard and dark mix, this one with an operatic female vocal. Nice mix)
9. My funny valentine...P. Melas (6:30) (interesting...and depressing, just like the song itself)
10. what is this...missarah (8:43) (this is a pretty good female vocal track-but, as with most of the tracks on here, I think the overall problem is that the melodies of the songs just aren't as strong as the instrumental mix would require them to be, so the music is forced to tone itself down.)
11. Sweet Johnny...kyoko (4:00) ( a chill out track, not a dance tune)
