Chess is a musical that sounds like it shouldn't work but instead succeeds surprisingly well. This is the original concept album that was recorded before the musical was staged in London. Chess is the story of a love triangle told against the backdrop of an international chess tournament during the height of the cold war. The composers are Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (the Bs in ABBA) and the lyrics are by Tim Rice, who supplied the words for Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita, as well as Disney's Aladdin (with Howard Ashman), The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast. The six-member cast does a beautiful job with the songs, which are a combination of ballads, rock, and operatic choruses. Murray Head's version of "One Night in Bangkok" became a surprise hit in the mid-'80s and it still turns up on the turntables in dance clubs around the world. --Michael Simmons

4 out of 5 stars This should never have worked at all.......2007-06-18

And on that basis alone, you've got to cut it some slack. Fortunately, not all that much slack turns out to be necessary.

While "Chess" may be a document of an era that no longer exists, there's a lot more going on than the surface metaphor. It holds up very well indeed. When it aims for humor, it generally succeeds, and likewise when it aims to devastate. What more can you ask for?

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT AND OFTEN OVERLOOKED MUSICAL FROM THE 80-IS.......2007-03-04

`Chess' is a musical that should be counted among the best of what the 1980-is had produced: side by side with `Cats', `The Phantom of the Opera', `Les Miserables' or `Miss Saigon'. The score as heard on this concept album, written by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (formerly of ABBA) and with the exceptional lyrics written by Tim Rice, stand proof to this. And yet, due to various reasons, like the changing of the director half way through London staging; a heavy rewrite for Broadway and a pan review from Frank Ritch (a.k.a. `The Butcher of Broadway'), `Chess' seems to be unjustly neglected.

This concept album is the main reason why the show has so many ardent fans until this day. Tim Rice wanted to write the show with the main plot revolving around chess for years and after his long time partner Andrew Lloyd Webber remained uninterested, he found the new collaborators in Ulvaeus and Andersson. The subject matter follows two international chess players in a championship, a Russian (Tommy Körberg) and an American (Murray Head) and a woman called Florence (Elaine Paige) who is a manager to the American but falls in love with the Russian. The story also draws a parallel between the game of chess and the cold war/real life situations.

This concept album was recorded in 1984, two years before the original London production took place. As the authors noted in the accompanying booklet, it was a work in progress and thusly the story is not quite readable here from the musical numbers alone. Despite that fact (which is amended by the synopsis included in the booklet), this album remains a winner. The score (played here by the London Symphonic Orchestra) itself makes an intriguing bland of the famous ABBA sound, the classical; the rock and the pop enhanced by the orchestral solo passages and the strong choral parts. The lush orchestrations add an epic touch to it and on the whole it is melodic and hummable, packed with great tunes. Some of the songs achieved huge success outside the musical: `I know him so well', a duet between Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson, held the number one spot on the UK singles charts for 4 weeks in February 1985 and won Ivor Novello Award as the Best Selling Single; Murray Head's `One night in Bangkok' became one of the biggest dance hits of its time, often heard today. Some other notable tunes include `The Anthem' (Russian's deliberation on his homeland); the soaring rock songs `Where I want to be' and `Pity the child' (in the former, the Russian reflects upon his life under the spotlight; in the latter, the American ponders about his own unhappy childhood) or the gentle `Heaven help my heart' (in which Florence weighs up her relationship with the Russian).

A special reference must be made to Tim Rice's excellent lyrics. With `Chess' he managed to keep up to the high standards he set himself in `Jesus Christ Superstar' and Evita'. Again in this case he shows he is a lyrical wizard, with his familiar cynical touch. `The story of chess', in which he gives a history of the game in a couple of crafty verses, is a pure masterpiece. The same can be said of the song `I know him so well', where the two women reexamine their relationship with the same man. As a whole, `Chess' owes a lot of its appeal to Tim Rice's written word.

The cast on this album ranks the high standard of the material. The principal parts (sung by Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg and Murray Head) are delivered in a strong and impeccable fashion.

This 2-disc edition comes with a booklet containing a note from the authors, a text about chess, a full synopsis and a libretto, together with the photos of the principal singers.

Anyone interested in the modern musical theatre should find `Chess' to be a great score with great lyrics, which should be enough to satisfy any aficionado.

A magnificent musical, i have enjoyed the music since i first heard it and read the storyline. Had been unable to find it in our local music stores.Very pleased to find it on your site.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2007-01-12

I love "Chess"! I still remember the first time I heard the single "One Night in Bangkok" on my car radio. I thought it was so unusual and so very cool, so I tracked down the album and bought it. Then I taped it onto a cassette, which is what I've been listening to for years, so I finally broke down and got it on CD. Of course, it's on my iPod now. I've seen the musical, and I loved that, too.

2 out of 5 stars Concepts get better with practice.......2006-11-27

I love this show! That said, I do not care for this version of it. The inclusion of the word "concept" in the title means it is just that. This was, thankfully, not the final version of the show that would later spawn the hit song, "One Night In Bangkok".

With most Broadway musicals, the musical numbers tell the basic story of the show. If you listen to the recordings of Phantom, Mama Mia, Beauty and the Beast, you can discern the basic storyline of the show. Listening to this particular recording of Chess, though, will leave you wondering "What was that?" The Broadway arrival of Chess saw a much needed reworking of the storyline and arrangement of the musical numbers. This recording seems too much like a mish-mash of songs that don't really relate to each other.

For musical fanatics (like myself), I say "yes, you should have this recording in your collection", if only to understand how much work went into the show before it opened on Broadway.

If you are only buying the album because of "One Night In Bangkok", purchase the Broadway recording instead; you'll be much happier with the performance by Phillip Casnoff rather than Murray Head.

5 out of 5 stars Star of TV's Friday the 13th, an early career effort worth having.......2006-05-08

Having recently discovered Louise Robey, the Countess of Burford, hidden away in a recording studio in Suffolk, England, it was a reminder of her earlier career accomplishments. Of late, she's been associated behind the scenes with the death metal group, Cradle of Filth. Robey is best known as the red-haired beauty, Micki Foster, who bewitched viewers on TV's three-year series, "Friday the 13th: The Series." Before that, she had mild success as a recording artist. This album, "One Night in Bangkok," released in 1984, represents her best effort. She's been reported to be working on a new album, but no release date has been promised.

On "Bangkok," she collaborated with producer Joel Diamond, who since then has accumlated 36 gold and platinum recordings and has produced hits for many artists, from Laura Branigan, Gloria Gaynor, Jay Black, Sister Sledge, Helen Reddy, and Australia's The Deadly Nightshades, to the more mundane Lorna Luft, Engelbert Humperdinck, Milton Berle, and Britt Eckland. Diamond's name came up in conversations over the years with other show biz people I've met who were happy with his work, including Dick Clark, Dr. Hook, Mike Doublas, Soupy Sales, and my good friend and Las Vegas star Clint Holmes. Often, a more successful career will stimulate interest in the earlier works, good or bad. In the context of 1984 when "One Night in Bangkok" was released, this is an excellent first album for Louise.

The title song is a cover of the Murray Head recording from the Broadway show "Chess." Robey's version hit number one in the dance clubs and various mixes of the song have circulated, but America was in an anti-disco mood by the mid-80s trying to cast off the musical vestiges of the 1970s. Prince, Madonna, Huey Lewis, a reinvented Tina Turner, even the unlikely pop dual of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney signaled that music was trying to write a new chapter. Movie soundtracks were in ("Footloose," "Ghostbusters"), Broadway show tunes were out. While this album will have you dancing, it did not get enough promotion to find it's niche in 1984. Had it been released during the run of "Friday the 13th," along with the show's theme song, it might have hit the upper levels of the pop charts.

Still, "Moth to A Flame," a song co-written by Robey, is an edgy, infectious song that should have been the first track leading off on this digitally remastered CD. Many artists underestimate the importance of the first three-tracks on a CD, but in 1984, artists will still pushing vinyl and cassettes, so it didn't matter. "L. Robey" also co-wrote her femme fatale track, "Killer Instinct," not bad for a new artist having two writing credits on an album. Besides "Moth" and "One Night," "Turn My Head" and "The Right Combination" are two other great dance songs, although I would have suggested a better orchestral arrangement for the intro of "Right Combination." Covers of the hits "Tighter, Tighter," and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show," are excellent arrangements and full of the energy and the sexy wink of a young singer who had an uncanny awareness of her potential at the time. The one quality that comes across on this album is that Robey seemed to be having fun recording this album and her positive energy comes across in her recordings. I would have left off one song--"Bored and Beautiful," a tongue-in-cheek satire of the boring and beautiful and replaced with something more primal or danceable...maybe a cover of Branigan's "Gloria," Bowie's "Let's Dance" or a hundred other songs, just not this one.

You have to remember to judge this album in the context of 1984. The technology and the way albums are produced and recorded have changed. Audio engineering and computers today can make a few instruments sound like a full orchestra and slight glitches in vocal efforts can be smoothed out with a few electronic tricks. With Robey's album, what you hear is what you get, but still a well produced album given what was possible more than two decades ago. Once "Friday the 13th: The Series" becomes available on DVD or replayed on TV, or, as I suspect, she returns to entertainment from her intermission as a mother and real countess, Louise will bring new interest in this early effort. If you're a fan of Louise Robey as I am, then having this momento of her career is a must.

3 out of 5 stars Robey Fan.......2001-07-16

I am a Robey fan from her work on "Friday the 13th:TV series." I would recommend this CD for any true die hard fan of Robey or of "Friday the 13th:TV Series." If you are not a fan or do not know who Robey is, then I suggest that you try something else. There are only a couple of good songs on this CD. The best one is "One Night in Bangkok." I think that Robey has a great voice, but this CD does not "rock my world."

1 out of 5 stars Yuck!.......2001-02-23

The tracks on this CD contain simplistic melodies and minimal artistry. Robey carries the tunes, but without any apparent vocal training or richness in her "style."

5 out of 5 stars this is the best song ever.......2006-10-09

the Vinylshakerz did the coolest job ever making this crappy song sound awesome. it is sooo hard to find, i heard it in a club the other night and i swear it has to be the coolest cover ever. tech heads around have to agree the bass in this song shreds.

1 out of 5 stars A Travesty! If I could give it a lower rating I would!.......2006-06-29

I just received this in the mail last night and listened to it. It is without a doubt the WORST cover of a remarkably original and innovative piece I have EVER heard! There is very little resemblance to the original work. The lyrics (what there are of them) can barely be heard over what apparently passes for music in the techno (whatever!) world! It's repetitious and frustrating (because the same line is repeated over and over and over again) and, in the final analysis, it's boring. If you can imagine approximately twenty minutes, broken into about five tracks (I don't have it with me so I don't have the exact figures), of the same line from the original cut (i.e. "One night in Bankok makes a hard man humble") being repeated with the same cliche techno babble played over the top of it, that's all there is to the entire audio portion of the CD. The "Bonus" videos are nothing more than the adolescent sexual fantasy of some raging teenage hormones run amok. Don't Bother!

2 out of 5 stars It's OK.........if you like that stuff........2005-12-13

It's, without a doubt, a new spin on an old classic. But it really doesn't do the old tune any justice. If you're into the techno-dance thing, than you would enjoy this. Myself.....I'm old school. I don't mind a "tune-up", but all I ask is that you be true to the original song.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonable - not great.......2005-09-09

In many ways the original "One Night in Bangkok" is a disco-pop classic. It's a catchy, funny, memorable track, and was a big hits when released decades ago. The Vinylshakerz remixes of the song are very similar to the Boogie Pimps' "California Dreamin'" and "Somebody to Love" remixes in that they do not do the song full justice. They also have a strong 80's techno feel to them, in the 2-Unlimited mode of dance music.. The Marcus Levin re-cut is a little more interesting and darker, and the XXL mix is probably the biggest stand out. It's not easy to mix a club classic, and it's also not easy to mix music with high standards set by Gabriel & Dresden, Calderone, Rauhofer and other DJs out there. This CD is a decent effort nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2005-05-25

This song is an absolute must for all club heads! It is absolutely amazing and its beat is infectious. I had so much trouble finding this song, but now that I've found it I would like to recommend it to all of you out there!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not great.......2007-03-29

I can't give it less than 3 stars because I love the musical. However, this recording is less than spectacular. It sounds like it was recorded by some guy in the audience with a mono tape recorder. I was disappointed in the leads, also. They're trying to hard to sound like rock stars, which makes them sound rather cheesy. There are good moments, but if you're new to "Chess," go with the original concept album. You can't beat Elaine Paige and Murray Head.

5 out of 5 stars Mate in Sweden!.......2007-02-07

Cold War Chess Championships came and went with the demise of the Soviet Union, as did the staging of Chess The Musical. This is to be regretted since musically and lyrically it is by far the best work from Abba duo Andersson and Ulvaeus, aided amply by Tim Rice. Oddly relatively unknown in Scandinavian, this concert performance, now well over ten years old, helped bridge the gap. It also managed to bring to the attention of producers that concert productions of this piece are perhaps the best way of bringing Chess to life in the post Cold War climate of the twenty-first century, and in particular relegating the old East West rivalry to the wings while focusing on the relationships-especially that of Florence and the Russian. Indeed they get all the best songs with the climatic finale You and I (reprise) making the hairs stand on the back of ones neck. The performance throughout are accomplished and enthusiastic, and the live performance and crowd responses add to the drama unfolding 'on stage'. One can only hope that Chess will remain in the consciousness of audiences and actors, producers and directors, as this CD is a perfect advertisement for a night of Chess at the theatre or concert hall

3 out of 5 stars Not that good.......2006-04-05

Contains the extra songs not found in the "studio release" (with Ms. Paige etc.). However, the quality is poor and even the artists are no match to the ones in the studio recording. However, a must for Chess-aficionados.

4 out of 5 stars An ok album........2003-07-02

I now own all the five major (legal) recordings of Chess; Original Concept, Broadway Cast, In Concert, "Danish" Complete Cast and Swedish cast.

All of these have their strenght and weaknesses, but as for completeness, one have to go for the Swedish or Danish recordings. As it is, I dislike the Swedish one, and the Danish is hard to get. That makes this Concert Recording the most complete of the remaining Chesses, but not necessarily the best sung.

I would not have bought this if it was not because I found it in a second hand cd store at a very low price. If you have the Danish album, you don't need it.

If you are a Chess virgin and cannot find the Danish album, chose this for near completeness or the Original Concept Album for best cast.

Avoid the Broadway Cast (extremely incomplete, though well sung) and the Swedish Cast (kind of complete, but otherwise weird and lacking the Chess spirit) if you don't happen to be a total Chess nut.

5 out of 5 stars If you like "Chess: the Musical", you need this CD.......2002-06-28

I have owned, and have been a huge fan of, the original London cast recording of Chess since 1985. I love the mix of classical and rock stylings, and I'm also a major fan of practically anything that Benny and Bjorn turn out. However, I approached this album with some reservations. I know the original album of Chess backwards and forwards, so I was a little skeptical as to how a "live" version would compare to the studio version. I needn't have worried. For the most part, this is an absolutely incredible concert, with only one or two weak spots. It boasts an excellent cast, and a wonderful choir and orchestra. Of the main characters, there is only one returning member from the London concept album; Tommy Korberg reprises his role as the Russian, but my gosh........what a difference a decade makes! He was excellent the first time around, but now, Tommy injects his performance with so much fire, it will make your hair stand on end. The showstopping duet with Svetlana (Lena Ericsson)on "Endgame" is worth the price, alone.......just breathtaking. Not everything works equally as well, but as I said above, there are more "hits" than "misses". Having been a fan of the duo, "Gemini", (Anders and Karin Glenmark), I was thrilled to see them step into the spotlight again, this time as the American and Florence, respectively. I was, however, a little disappointed to discover that Anders' performance is not quite up there with Murray Head's in the original. Anders has the better voice, no doubt, but the conviction is just not the same; Murray was more convincing in the role, and I agree with another reviewer who said they didn't like Anders' histrionics. It's a bit "over the top" at times. As for Karin, she is a fabulous singer, (as is her brother.....don't get me wrong on that point....). My only problem with her is her pronunciation on a few words, but seeing how this CD was recorded in Sweden, released on a Swedish label, and probably really isn't intended for an American market, it's kind of understandable too. A couple of good things to point out in general; this CD finally adds two songs that were missing from the original recording; the gorgeous "Someone Else's Story", (beautifully performed by Karin Glenmark), and "The Soviet Machine", (part of which appears in the track "Opening Ceremony"). The reprise of "Merano" is a great addition at the end of the concert, with an ecstatic audience clapping along and cheering at it's conclusion. All in all, this is a great addition to your collection, even if you have the first recording. With variations in tempos, different interpretations of pieces, and two bonus songs, it's the same musical, and yet, not quite the same.

5 out of 5 stars Fast-paced Bangkok.......2007-03-21

The musical CD and the 15 minutes DVD are fast-paced, energetic, and awesome. It is dance music at its best. The DVD is mind-blowing, eye-popping, and a musical essay on the finer things in Bangkok. The 15 minutes DVD could have been longer. I have been to Bangkok 5 times, and I would have to say that the music and scenes pretty well sums it up.

5 out of 5 stars Pure European Thrash!.......2005-08-31

One of the big three in Germany (along with Destruciton and Kreator), a band once changed it all with Agent Orange and Better Off Dead is back with a live album. Live albums deserve to be double, this is no exceoption. All the classics are here. Pure old school Euro-thrash... If you are into new bands such as The Haunted, Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God this is a good oppurtunity to see where they were influenced from...

3 out of 5 stars Not a Genuine DJ Shadow Album.......2005-09-20

As mentioned on the Quannum Records web site, this is not an authentic Shadow album but is, in fact, a mash-up created by an unknown.

"A few weeks ago, Solesides mentioned about the DJ Shadow bootleg "Live in Bangkok". Note that only the first 18 minutes of this release are mixed by DJ Shadow.

Once again we need to tell you not to buy it. This is what Shadow himself says about this bootleg;

"It's basically a mix I did for the BBC in late '99 or early '00 along with someone else's jazz music (?) Now people are putting anything on a CD and saying it's me. This is exactly what they did to Hendrix after he died throughout the '70s. It sucked then and it sucks now.

The money you spend on this does not go to the artist. Might as well download it for free. AMAZON IS BREAKING THE LAW BY SELLING THIS.
