3 out of 5 stars Darling Buds of May.......2004-08-18

I'm trawling for string quartet music which sounds so great you want to play it, but easy enough to have a bash at if you're not very good. The very last track on the disc, piece 2 of "3 pieces" (no prize for the unimaginative name!) sounds like just such a piece for me. It is only a couple of minutes long, and I think would bear a complete repeat from beginning to end. From an English composer it's a vibrant English seasidy quartet with a syncopated beat, conjuring 1950's England, Darling buds of May, Just William, and my old feller's 1950's holidays in Llandudno as a teenager listening to the pier orchestra (aka the Liverpool Phil in disguise). The other pieces on the CD, including Londonderry Air, are rather more challenging than my simple tastes expected, and I shall reserve judgement until I have heard them a bit more. My rating of three stars may be unduly mean but I was not allowed to submit a review without picking a figure so I've just gone in the middle.

5 out of 5 stars BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS.......2000-06-24

Our English cousin, Frank Bridge [1879-1941], like his contemporary EJ Moeran, is a ridiculously neglected composer. Again, like Moeran, Bridge seems to have garnered most attention through his orchestral works, such as his beautiful suite, "The Sea." Lucky we are, then, to have this Naxos recording of a goodly selection of early Bridge quartet works, superbly produced and engineered, with the Maggini foursome at the helm. These are not the acerbic and sparse compositions of Bridge's later years, but rather his chamber music at its most inviting.

That said, the opening Phantasie Quartet in F Minor (1905) strikes one immediately as innovative and attractive, its first movement quite endearing and possessing a delicious lyrical main theme. The second movement Andante has a sweet lilting quality to it bringing to mind the English countryside. The final Allegro is, well, if anything, a jaunty ride through the hills and dales.

The three Novelletten (1904) again display Bridge's proclivity towards melody and lyricism: the first, a gentle, soothing Andante; the second, a mild-mannered Presto accented by plucked strings; the third, a memorable,full-blooded Allegro.

The Three Idylls are of exceptional grace and beauty, especially the first, and the longest of the three, marked Adagio molto espressivo.

The four pieces Bridge "translates," not transcribes, from traditional English tunes (incl. "An Irish Melody," "Sir Roger," "Sally in Our Alley" and "Cherry Ripe") he accomplishes within his own idiom, and there are not just a few nods at Ravel and the French School, either, hidden amongst the English lyricism.

Capping the CD are three heretofore unrecorded works by Bridge of rather short duration, but all quite delightful, anyway.

4 out of 5 stars Remembering George Butterworth.......2006-08-04

For all the Anglophiles in music this fine sampling of the works of George Butterworth will be a welcome addition to the narrow margin of his works that remain in repertoire and in recordings. A contemporary of Gustav Holst and very much in the same vein as Frank Bridge and Ralph Vaughn Williams, this selection of works is another installment in The British Collection, a worthy and laudable effort to raise appreciation for the many composers form the British Isles that flavor our concert halls.

Oddly pairing both works for voice and piano with works for orchestra, Neville Marriner has none the less created a memorable concert here. Beginning with Butterworth's most famous piece, 'A Shropshire Lad, for voice & piano performed here by Benjamin Luxon with David Willison at the piano and following that with the less well known but equally fluid 'Bredon Hill and Other Songs' for voice & piano, comparisons are bound to be made with other recitals of these works (Bryn Terfel for one) and while Benjamin Luxon is a fine baritone, his voice is not in the sate it once enjoyed making the songs a bit frayed.

The joy of the recording is hearing Butterworth's own orchestral 'A Shropshire Lad', rhapsody for string orchestra in context with the song cycle. Neville Marriner conducts the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields with suave elegance. Also included in the orchestral portion is Butterworth's 'The Banks of Green Willow, idyll for orchestra in one of the most cohesive and atmospheric readings on record.

For this listener the surprise is the relatively rare 'Two English Idylls' which are not only finely composed but have solid thematic thoughts better developed than in much of Butterworth's writing. And Marriner and his forces offer a superb and subtle performance. It is worth the price of the CD! Grady Harp, August 06

5 out of 5 stars All the BUTTERWORTH that's fit to print..........2006-07-17

In fact, this is all the Butterworth that's left to us in the world--period: these few art songs, and a couple 'o three orchestral pieces. He had just begun to compose thoroughly when he went off to Flanders and was slain on the battlefield in 1916. Prior to his embarkment, he destroyed all remaining fragments of his art: so, this is it!

Bryn Terfel does a better job with the songs, but this is still a nice collection.

The lyrical pieces recall an unique aesthetic of Edwardian England and the very end of the so-called "Long Nineteenth Century."

    Farewell, alas!

    5 out of 5 stars Surreal.......2007-07-23

I purchased "Idylls" years ago when I was in college. I am a big fan of ambient music, but didn't know what to expect with this album. I purchased it - frankly - because I liked the cover of the album and the name of the band. I was searching for something that sounded like Lush's album "Spooky." When I listened to "Idylls" - I was BLOWN AWAY. It is the type of music that surrounds you. Anything that is bothering you, just goes away and you are lost in ambient bliss. Needless to say, my old copy fell on some gravel and was scratched. When I found this copy, I snapped it up. If you like Lush, My Bloody Valentine or The Sundays... this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Rainy day kind of CD .......2005-08-15

Love spirals downwards: 'Idylls' is a great, low-key, rainy day kind of CD. There is a general mood of sadness and despair at times then blithesome optimism at others in this CD. Each song sort of collides into the next. There is a unique mesh of sounds with souring electric guitars, acoustics, and kind of tribal sounding drums. The vocals are very serene, soothing, and kind of dreamy, Celtic influenced.

It reminds me of the group `Love is colder than death' a lot, only less dark and gothic. The guitars actually sound like `The Cure' to me, especially in the eighth track, 'Stir about the Stars'.

This is the kind of music you can just lay down on your soft bed, light some candles, put on your head phones, and just let the music take you away.

    5 out of 5 stars hypnotic dreampop.......2001-09-23

the first of this duos (ryan lum and suzanne perry) albums just goes to show that more people in a band doesn't necessarily result in better music. all of you lousy DIVA's(christina, britney, mandy, what ever)... take note: suzanne's understated and entrancing voice is SIMPLy a more effective instrument anything you could ever achieve. this absolutely hypnotic and stirring album is just beautiful. of course, you're only taking the word of someone you've never met and have no idea of his musical tastes, but this cd has established itself at the top of my all time favorite list. If you are in the least interested in any aethereal-pop/shoegazer, PICK THIS ONE UP!!!

5 out of 5 stars Pinnacle of LSD.......2001-06-16

Love Spirals Downwards's angelic ambient style is fantastic. Idylls peacefully dark dreampop track is a further evidence that Love Spirals Downwards is one of the greatest ethereal bands ever to grace us.

4 out of 5 stars great debut for a fantastic group of musicians.......2000-07-31

lsd is one group of musicians whose music touches the world on a different level. most music is hear today gone tomorrow, but idylls is an album that can be listen to every day, and never have get old. it also features probably the most moving music the band has made to date. ardor was a great cd, but didn't move as much as this one does. faster beats and more driving keyboard on songs like forgo make this album the bands most diverse. check it out. its a great cd.

      Album Description

It's a rockin' eclectic set of instrumentals (Well, okay, there is one vocal,) that's at home in a smoky lounge with over-dressed patrons and over-dressed martinis. It just as much at home with half the room rocking while watching the other half swing. The Boston Globe (1/21/99) said, "No Label for these Suits! Four Piece Suit does a swinging instrumental hybrid of surf. lounge, rock and jazz. The sound is suave and playful with non-stop banter between Dave Sholl's sax and the three remaining pieces: Milt Reder's guitar, Dean Cassell's bass, and Lorne Entriss's drums.

Four Piece Suit in the flesh--er, suits--whips up a nice camp-infected rumpus, and on disc it doesn't disappoint. It's new CD, "Matinee Idyls," is mostly composed of originals, mingled with covers such as a surfy take on Patti Page's 'Old Cape Cod' and 'It came from Ipanema,' a woozy relation to the Ipanema song."

This band has a whole lot of fun with their music and it shows, both in their recorded music as well as in their live performances. The music ranks as well as the Voodoo Daddies and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. Some of their pieces harken back to the "Beach Blanket Bingo" style of lounge act and others are reminicient of the 1940s crime dramas. All around fun. Highly recommended.

Someone gave me a copy of this in 1994 and it's one of my most cherished CDs. I listen to it only occasionally, when I am seeking solace and the quiet beauty of these masterful performances. The liner notes suggest that the recording was made around 1968, though it was freshly mastered for this release, and I just can't believe that the music was recorded at that or *any* date.

Stylistically, the music falls somewhere between classical, folk, and new age. All pieces are the product of Nicholson playing some stringed instrument (guitar? dulcimer?), and the combination of cascading melodies and intricate textures never fails to both engage and soothe me.

I must admit that I enjoyed this sampler CD introduction to the musical world of Alan Hovhaness more than the other reviewer. These are peaceful and lovely recordings and renditions of these works. It was refreshing to hear a more varied collection of Hovhaness' sound than the repetitiveness that he is often criticized for. One of the criticisms of Hovhaness was that he was trying to be like Vaughan Williams in every piece (which is not true). He had a specific spiritual "vision" that lent a characteristic sound to his music like many other composers.

My one problem with this affordable disc is that the track listing is incorrect for the pieces: Mountain Idyll and Sonata Fred the Cat (both solo piano works). They are listed as having multiple tracks (#5-7) and (#9-12) when in actuality they are on the CD in single one track movements, so the CD comes out actually having 8 tracks (1 per work sampled). For a while I thought I had the wrong CD or it was defective. Then I figured it out by putting it in my CD Rom and it displayed the actual track listing with titles through Windows Media Player.

If that glitch doesn't bother you too much, this is a nice and afforable intro to Hovhaness' music. - - Max Stoltenberg, LPC

2 out of 5 stars Hovhaness needs more maturity.......2005-02-02

I was very dissapointed when I heard this album. The sound is tinny, strident, and unbalanced. I can imagine how hard it is for unfunded orchestras to make recordings, but this sounds like a scraggly bunch of pickup players who play with no soul. Hovhaness demands a fuller, burnished tone. Even worse than the poor sound quality and sketchy intonation is the lack of a sense of flexibility and nuance. The hollowness of the playing would not be so offensive if there were a feeling of expansiveness, languidness, or generousity. I can't help thinking the composer would be very saddened by this effort. I hope Mr. Clark's realizes someday that music is not something that can be hammered out like a wall street stock deal. The kind of crassness on display here is better suited to commerce or (lamentably), politics.
