1 out of 5 stars Artifice not art.......2005-04-20

This album is a big tub of artifice not art. Brian Adams is awful and simply has no voice and probably has nodes on his vocal cords. Pavarotti obviously stands out because he chose the other singers and despite the enormity of his talent (benefit charity or not) offers up shlock. Gustafson has a nice voice, but shouldn't sing Moon River until she learns the words - her voice serves the classical genre better. As for Boceli; I would rather eat worms than listen to another of his tremulous renditions. Sorry, this is pure junk for the ears, regardless of its attempts to raise funds. It does not raise artistic standards!

5 out of 5 stars Live Audience, Variety=Enjoyable Listening Experience.......2002-09-12

O.k., I admit it, I bought this CD because I'm a die hard Andrea Bocelli fan, but I discovered I really love the variety of singers and the spontaneity and excitement of the live performance at the Parco Novi Sad in Modena. Particular favorites--Bryan Adam's "Please Forgive Me," Pavarotti and Giorgia's "Santa Lucia Luntana," and the ensemble singing of "Brindisi." The combination of voices and styles, the live
audience, and the knowledge that the event was performed for charity, all add up to a very enjoyable listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2002-02-07

This is a fun CD with many great singers and a good one. Of Course Pavarotti is one of the greatest voices ever; and along with Bocelli, Nancy Gustafson and Giorgia this CD is filled with great singing and Brian Adams is a good singer. Its just fun to hear Adams singing O Sola Mio with Pavarotti; and its Fun to Hear Pavarotti sing Moon River All for Love, etc.,. Highlights are Santa Lucia Luntana with Pav and Gustafson, Who Wants To Live Forever with Giorgia, Notte 'e Piscatore with Pav and Bocelli, and the two encores with everyone singing (All For Love and Brindisi). The Production of the CD is excelent as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent live album.......2001-11-08

This is the 2nd in the 'Pavarotti and Friends' series of benefit concerts. Although there are not the large amount of "superstars" on this cd as later 'Friends' albums were to have, this is an excellent live recording, and I could and have listened to it many times. I don't understand the previous reviewers, but to each his own! This album also introduced me to the beautiful voice of Nancy Gustafson, and I definately want to check out her other work now. And who can resist the wonderful pairing of Pavarotti and Bryan Adams on "O Sole Mio". Worth the price in itself. One thing though .. I know this album and concert was done for charity, but nowhere in the booklet or cd cover does it say which charity is benefitting. The booklet includes lots of photos from the night. Recommended.

1 out of 5 stars torture.......2001-09-25

i would rather ingest shards of glass than listen to this schlock again. whoever thought up the idea of having the phenomenal pavarotti sing with such morons as bryan adams should be forced to stand in the corner and then go to bed without supper. i don't care if this was for a good cause. big deal. give to the red cross or something. but don't make me listen to this horrific CD ever again. it's painful.

    Album Description

Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) is a devoted housewife and mother of ten in the 1950s. Her husband (Woody Harrelson) can't seem to make ends meet, but that doesn't stop the car from breaking down, the mortgage coming due and the bills from piling up. It falls to Evelyn to defy the conventions of the day and find a way to keep her family together with the odds stacked against them. Applying her remarkable resourcefulness and an uncommon wit, Evelyn finds her own way in the profitable jingle contests popular in the 1950s and'60s.

Composer John Frizzell adds his own sophisticated sound to the compositions and brings on two great musicians - Sara and Sean Watkins - to play fiddle and guitar. The Soundtrack includes recordings by The Ames Brothers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Dee Carstensen, Kay Starr and new recordings by k.d. lang "I'm Sitting on top of the World" and the film's Woody Harrelson.

The Simon and Schuster book The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How my mother raised 10 kids on 25 words or less (by Terry Ryan) is currently available.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Goulet My Love Forgive Me/Sincerely Yours.......2007-06-08

The CD arrived on time and was in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars My Love Forgive Me/ Sincerely Yours by Robert Goulet.......2001-10-10

When someone mentions Robert Goulet, it triggers a memory.

Back in 1964, barely in my teens, I walked into my grandmother's
house one Saturday to find my two middle-aged aunts gushing over
a handsome male singer who was scheduled to appear on the Ed
    Sullivan show.

I could not imagine who could elicit such a reaction.

One of my aunt's dashed from the room and returned, holding
a copy of the LP "My Love Forgive Me." The singer was Robert
    Goulet.

Well, years later, late in my teens, and listening to the music
of my parent's generation instead of my own, I discovered what
    all the fuss was about.

Robert Goulet has one of the finest voices in the pop music of
that era. Indeed, that handsome baritone sings those warm and
tender ballads so convincingly, it's no wonder the ladies swoon.
On the swing numbers, I can't help but snap my fingers and sing
along. His showmanship radiates in every performance, whether
in cabaret, in musical theater, or on records.

This CD reissue, in addition to the forementioned LP, also
includes the LP "Sincerely Yours," a beautiful recording also
released in the early 60s on Columbia Records. His albums back
then were big sellers for the label. It's wonderful that two
more are now available to his fans in the CD format.

Footnote: Highly recommended, too, is the Sony import that
includes his two LPs of Broadway songs.

5 out of 5 stars Goulet Hits The Mark.......2001-03-12

Having had both "Sincerely Yours" and "My Love Forgive Me" on vinyl I was familar with the content of this CD.

Robert Goulet had released 2 alblums prior to "Sincerely Yours" with mixed results. He had been trying to make that transition from "Broadway Baritone" to the pop charts , and he finally hit the mark with "Sincerely Yours". With a mixture of both Broadway and Standards charts and a letting loose of that big voice he finally found the combination that showed his talents. The arranger and conductor, Sid Ramin, should be given credit for a job well done.

The "My Love Forgive Me" tracks are a different kind of offering. This alblum was Robert Goulet's most popular, given the fact that beside "If Ever I Would Leave You", the title track of this alblum is the song he was most associated with during his recording career. There are 4 different conductors on the 12 tracks and the alblum, although it doesn't suffer from this,it feels a little less consistent. I will say that on the tracks Mr. Goulet is at the top of his form, and most of the set has a very serious feel to it.

The 2 bonus tracks are the icing on the cake. Marty Manning's arrangement of "If Ever I Would Leave You" and Mr. Goulet's delivery of his signature song are worth the price of admission. "Summer Sounds" is a representative song of the mid-60's, when summer songs were the rage.

Now if we can only get Sony to produce a box set of Robert Goulet's entire Columbia output!

    5 out of 5 stars A CLASSICAL SINGER.......2001-02-13

Robert Goulet is gifted with an extraordinary voice: vibrant, deep and emotive. This CD is the reedition of 2 early LPs with an excellent choice of songs. Listen to an authentic voice, with no trick and let this old-school crooner put a spell on you! His style is out of fashion and he has the quality of a classical singer.

    4 out of 5 stars A not-so-guilty pleasure!.......1999-04-29

Aside from Goulet's self-parody image, he was indeed an amazing singer! These two early albums display this in beautiful form. Goulet is in full, dramatic voice here. A pure not-so-guilty pleasure!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic disco PSB style.......2005-11-07

When I first heard the title of the song 'Can You Forgive Her' by the Pet Shop Boys, my mind immediately went to the novel penned by Anthony Trollope of the same name. I would not be surprising for the Pet Shop Boys to incorporate such a theme or image into their songs - one of the things the PSB have been noted for was the intelligence in their lyrics. While there is no direct linkages to the novel, there are perhaps, in a gender-switching sort of way, parallels to the difficult situations of Trollope's characters, especially the 'her' of the title.

This was the first single release from the 'Very' album, one that returned to a much more disco-oriented kind of sound and beat. Computer technology for video and music instruments increased dramatically through the 80s, and that kind of technological innovation can be seen in this production.

The CD has five tracks of remixes of the title song, 'Can You Forgive Her', plus a remix of the track 'I Want To Wake Up' from the Actually album of 1987. This is an interesting remake of the song, remixed by PSB-veteran collaborator Shep Pettibone, unavailable in other formats.

This is pure Pet Shop Boys from the time that some were already reporting them as a thing of the past; the PSB are still around, and this song is now considered one of their classic hits.

It's one thing when you know an album and a first single are coming out. It's another when you find it by accident and end up loving it. I don't know the difference between dub and remix, but I liked both here. Too often, CD singles only have one good version of the track. Here, all the versions were good. I liked "I want to wake up" on their "Actually" disc, I liked it here too more so because the Boys have lasted despite naysayers, disco-haters, and homophobes. The fact that they have album cuts to remix shows that they have staying power. Thumbs up to this disc. It'll make you reminisce on the fun and positivity of the 1990s.

The rumors are true: Forgive Durden definitely evokes Gatsby's American Dream. This is true, however, for reasons that are only positive. First, GAD is so adept at mixing styles and whole genres within an album, and usually an individual song, that saying another band sounds like them is actually a compliment to their uniqueness. In other words, saying that Forgive Durden sounds like Gatsby's American Dream is saying they sound like no one else.

Another reason they remind you of GAD? They're lyrics are smart; and there's hardly any hint of broken-hearted suburban teenage angst. There are bigger issues at play here; again, much like GAD and, again, nothing but a compliment (if you want to hear the opposite, there are plenty of bands out there for you, i.e., Cute is What We Aim For, etc.).

Yet, it's the vocals that sets Forgive Durden completely apart. When FD slows it down a touch and the lead vocalist lays his voice bare, I hear Bright Eyes.

This is an impressive album. At worst, it's a bit derivate of GAD . . . and that, in my mind, puts them ahead of 99% of the bands out there. Pick this one up; these guys deserve the hype that some of their annoying label mates are getting.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, no doubt........2006-07-05

Heard of this band a few months before Wonderland came out and checked them out on MySpace and PureVolume. When it finally came out a few months ago, I bought it immediately.

Fueled by Ramen does it again with Forgive Durden's "Wonderland". Definitely recommended for fans of Panic! at the Disco, Matchbook Romance, Gatsby's American Dream, and Taking Back Sunday.

If you're into punk rock, this is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Forgive Durden is a SMASH.......2006-06-30

Just saw them live again last night and they are awesome. They just need their fans to keep coming out and supporting them and they'll be fine. Great group of guys, making good music. We'll be seeing them again in August, maybe twice in one week, so we'll be promotin' and representin' for the month of July. Go Durden!

5 out of 5 stars why isn't fbr promoting these guys?.......2006-06-04

i heard the five song promo for wonderland weeks before it was actually released, and was completely shocked when may 9th rolled around and i couldn't find a copy of this cd anywhere. forgive durden is another teriffic band that fueled by ramen could promote the hell out of and they would become huge(panic! at the disco, the academy is...), but they so far seem to be overlooked. it's a shame, because these guys are incredibly talented.

the comparison to gatsbys american dream is obvious, but if you're going to pick a band to copy, gatsbys isn't a bad choice. forgive durden are much more accessible though due to the inclusion of catchy as hell, singalong choruses. if you combined gatsbys with panic! at the disco, you'd probably get a pretty accurate impression of forgive durden. catchy, but complex, and with enough dynamic tempo changes to hold anyone's attention.

for the record, the last minute or so of parable of the sower is one of the most original things i've heard in the genre lately. i can't get enough of that song.

the lyrics and concept of wonderland are really what set forgive durden apart from most bands in the genre. really complex, intelligent stuff. no whining about girls or feelings from these guys. actually, the concept of this album reminds me a ton of ...is a real boy by say anything, which is about the best compliment i can possibly give.

also, forgive durden put on one hell of a live show. tons of energy, and the lead guitarist couldn't be much more entertaining to watch. really nice guys too.

i really reccommend buying this album. i rarely write reviews, but wonderland just blew me away.

5 out of 5 stars If you like GAD.........2006-05-11

Even though many people think they somewhat copied Gatsby's american Dream, it is not exactly true. There are definitely points that they sound like Gatsby's, but the singer is a lot different, and the music is a little more catchy. In my opinion, this album has a chance to be one of the top albums of the year, but they don't recieve much recognition so not many people are familiar with them. Every song on this CD is different and brings something new to the table. If you like to listen to music , then you might want to take a listen.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fine performance.......2004-10-10

This is one opera I have been searching for for a very long time. I read about it in a book about Sullivan. Of course, when they wrote of the opera, they showed the scene, in drawing, where Rebecca informs Ivanhoe of the battle with the Black Knight. The drawing (based on the actual performance when it premiered) grabbed my attention completely. I just wondered what this composer could do with real opera (I loved his operettas completely, and they showed quite often Sullivan was quite capable of deep emotional pathose, even if in the end he was spoofing it more than reflecting it).

Well, all the years of searching and waiting to know were not a waste. Firstly, I have never been able to locate a score of this work (as I have done with many ancient operas or forgotten ones), so I was just as in the dark as anyone else as to what to expect. I was incredibly surprised, not to mention, thrilled with the results. No, Sullivan is no Wagner, nor is he even Verdi, but he is wonderfully beautiful in his own right. Why this work has not entered into the opera houses, I have no clue, excepting maybe because it is English opera, which never does well. Speaking of "ENGLISH OPERA", here we have a recording where for the most part we CAN understand the words (a thing I never seem to find in professional recordings of English opera, or American opera; they may as well sing in gibberish, for that is exactly what it sounds like -- perhaps the composers have no clue what works in their own language?). The performers, as we know, are not professionals, but rather semi-professionals. There are some uneven performances, and sometimes the characters are not quite as developed as one would like, there are even times the orchestra sounds like it lost the beat (but this is EXTREMELY RARE), the sound quality of the recording is OK, but nothing stellar, however, it is not bad either. Yet, in spite of these drawbacks, we CAN and DO understand the words, and for once a rather strange sounding English libretto sounds natural and unforced with stupid poetry that really leaves you laughing. These wonderfully dedicated performers, no matter their individual difficulties, give us a wonderfully vivid performance where we can finally understand the opera (like all our Italian friends do when Italian opera is sung for them). That was such a treat for me, to finally actually understand the words of opera sung in my own language.

What makes this opera such a thrill, at least for me, is the natural fall of the words and the music, especially in the recitatives. Unlike most English opera where the musical line sounds completely foreign to the natural lilt of the words, Sullivan has an uncanny way of writing lines, melodies, and recitatives that flow naturally from the language itself. That was a really exciting experience to endure. For once, I didn't wish that someone would teach the composers to listen to the flow of English to gain an insight into melody. Maybe it was all those operettas that he wrote prior to this "serios opera" that taught him what he knew, or maybe, he just had a good ear for his own language and enough sense to know that trying to graft Italian or German musical idioms onto things just wasn't the correct choice.

Is it a great work? Well, no, it will never get into the record books as a perfect opera, nor will it shove Mozart or Wagner off the stage, but it is really quite good just the same. Even with all the flaws this recording has, I am so glad it is out there so I could at last hear what music fleshed out that old drawing I saw in a book all those years ago. Though Sullivan's music is not anywhere near as dramatic as one may imagine it should be, it fits well with the scene and the over all concept of the work.

I really recommend this recording, for it, at least for now, is the only one we have (and if they make a professional one, I really hope they screen the singers well, no big names if they can't sing English so we can understand it; Sullivan, as with Wagner, you MUST understand the words or the meaning is completely lost). The entire recording is really quite enjoyable, and it doesn't disappoint.

3 out of 5 stars Not ideal, but all there is.......2000-08-05

If you are interested in Arthur Sullivan's Music without Gilbert, this is one of the works you should have in your collection. Unfortunately the quality of the performance is inconsistent. The orchestra is at times good, at others sloppy. The soloists are also of varying quality. This is, after all, a recording by a semi-professional group. That said, if you are willing to accept the flaws, this is currently the only version on disc. Perhaps someday the BBC will record a version, as they did with Sullivan's "Rose of Persia". In the current recording, the most pleasing selections are: The Act 3 Scene 2 ensemble "Look where thy moody father walks apart", Friar Tuck's rollicking "Ho, Jolly Jenkin", The Templar's passionate scene "Woo thou thy snowflake", and Rebecca's evocative aria "Lord of our chosen race". Not all it could be, but it's all we've got.

    1 out of 5 stars Ugh!.......2005-06-04

Who decided on THESE remixes? The Valentin remix is merely passable, but I don't enjoy it. The Guiseppe D mix is weak as well. The vocals don't fit well on EITHER of those remixes! And the DezroK mix is simply a mess. The instrumental is decent, but the re-recorded vocals are so off key, it's unbearable! Just THINKING about this remix single almost gets me physically ill! An exaggeration, but I REALLY don't like it. The only mix worth listening to, IMHO, is the original, which is, quite frankly, OFF DA HOOK and one of the BEST cover versions of a song I've heard in a LONG time! Reina DEFINITELY does Rebecca Lynn Howard (who's version is also OFF DA HOOK!) proud! You're better off buying Reina's "This Is Reina" album instead, which has the original version of "Forgive" and is quite excellent, if a bit overly sad at times due to too many heartbreak anthems.

If you want a GOOD remix single, wait for Amber's "Voodoo" to be released on June 21. ALL the remixes are HOT! You might also want to buy Amber's "You Move Me" single, or "My Kind Of World" album if you want an album that features GREAT songwriting. Or ANYTHING else from Reina. This is garbage; the rest of Reina's library is GOLD!

    4 out of 5 stars Catchy!.......2005-05-22

'Forgive' is the 2nd single from her debut album 'This is Reina', which I highly recommend. Reina (Lori Goldstein) is a true talented singer, and can hit those high notes effortlessly.

I enjoyed this maxi-single. The Valentin mixes are the best ones in my opinion, they add a little flavor to the original and make the song more club material. The Giuseppe D. mixes are okay, but the basslines seem to get boring real quick, so I wasn't very impressed. The DezroK mix I didn't care for either, at least vocally. The vocals must have been re-recorded for this track, but they are not nearly as good as the original, somewhat flat on the verses and poor coordination of vocals and production.

Reina is just awesome- very strong and controlled voice, and probably the best in the dance music genre (other than Kristine W)...it's a tie between them for me. And outside the studio, she can rip through those hits on stage- saw her live in Orlando and she's got pipes. Support her music!

5 out of 5 stars The Voice Of An Angel!.......2005-05-17

First Off Let Me Say That, Reina Is An AMAZING Performer As Well As A GENUINE Down To Earth Girl. Her Voice Always Gets Better. Give Her Another Country Track & The Girl Will Rock It Out. She Gives This Track A Whole New Feel. Trust Me When I Say, She Blows The Original Track Away. Feeling & Emotion.

Rebecca Lynn Howard's impressive debut positioned the Eastern Kentucky native as both a Patty Loveless acolyte and a formidable songwriter, contributing "I Don't Paint Myself into Corners" to the Trisha Yearwood songbook. Now comes her follow-up, which makes concessions to country's increasing inclination toward pure pop, even as it also includes some of the staunchest hillbilly music to come out of Nashville in years. "Jesus and Bartenders," Larry Cordle and Leslie Satcher's exquisite honky-tonk paean to both, weighs in as the album's biggest throwback to True Country, while Howard's own "It Didn't Look Like Alcohol," a poignant song of a man's struggle with unseen demons, comes in a close second. These exceptionally well crafted tunes seem even more extraordinary when bumped up against such forgettable pop as "Life Had Other Plans" and "Memorized." But the big-voiced Howard builds a bridge between the two styles on the title song, in which a wife reels from her husband's confession of infidelity. More than any other recent album, Forgive epitomizes country's current schizophrenia. There's no question which format will burn in your memory, even if it's the other that will likely make Rebecca Lynn Howard a star. --Alanna Nash

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-23

This album sounds great...the song choices are good, background music is awesome, lyrics are cool, and Rebecca's voice is good. I was not disappointed with this album and I listened to some of the songs many times over. Life Had other plans for me and Forigve are my two fav. songs...absolutely beautiful! Great album! Highly recommended. Some of the songs are a little Redneck...but I am a Redneck, so I enjoy them. Even if you aren't a Redneck, you'll still like at least a few of the songs (or at least you should). Good album.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificient Achievement.......2007-02-09

Rebecca Lynn Howard's sophmore album combines honky-tonk with sweet pop/country to create an exceptional sound. She is a rare talent as both singer and songwriter whose heart is poured into every note. All country music aspires to be personal to the listener, however, this record resonates like few others. I had a similar experience to the one described in "Didn't Look Like Alcohol," and likewise "Life Had Other Plans" hits home. "Forgive," which charted at #12, is an anthem and some of the best songwriting. "Dancin' In God's Country" is an upbeat, twangy tune.

The greatest music evokes intensely personal responses like, "I felt you were singing about my life," and this one does it. There is a conviction in her voice and lyrics reminicient of fellow Kentuckian Patty Loveless. These two songbirds share a connection, Rebecca sings on Patty's Mountain Soul, a recommendation for anyone who likes Forgive. RLH claims Whitney Houston and Celine Dion as influences, but they don't have the conviction or soul that she has. Patty, Loretta, and Dolly may be more appropriate comparisons.I recommend this CD highly, and any record company troubles RLH experiences erode any faith I may have left in the Nashville music establishment. I hope for more of this in the future.

Honestly, I'd have to say it's an average country album. Nothing specific really, I just can't find any other songs that click for me! I bought it because of Forgive, and honestly that's about the only thing I'd use it for.

If you've just heard Forgive, I'd recommend buying a digital download of just that song and saving your money for another album.

I took my wife and parents to the Grand Ole Opry in October 2003, just after this album was released. RLH sang two songs, a funny one about breaking up with a boyfried and "Forgive". When she belted out that ballad, I turned to my wife and said, "She's gonna be a huge star one day." After the show, of course, we stopped in the gift shop and grabbed the CD. Good stuff.
