Detroit's Richie Hawtin, a.k.a. Plastikman, has become the edgy king of minimalist techno. In 1999 the massively influential Decks, EFX & 909 showcased his explosive talent for improvisation and beat structure while blowing through an impressive array of tracks with his driving, impossibly effective rhythms. Hawtin's De9: Closer to the Edit is another mind-blower and a full-on test of dance music's latest thrust: the mixing of analog and digital sound. The technology at work here, known as Final Scratch, allows for a wider infusion of source material; Hawtin uses it to sample, cut, and splice together over 70 songs, with an array of effects and overdubs as the glue. Besides the studio innovation at work, Edit also features a relatively melodic approach, along with an astonishing sense of pace and patience. Hawtin throws in pieces of Theorem, Steve Bug, and Carl Craig, amid little chunks of his own material, to create a sound that's elusive, surprising, and filled with the sort of cadences that render the Sunday morning dawn utterly insignificant. Most significantly, there's a playful persona at work here, cracking through Hawtin's relentless attack and making for a record that will please longtime fans and new recruits alike. --Matthew Cooke
From URB Magazine
In a recent URB cover story, Richie Hawtin defined minimalism as "the fine balance between what is necessary and what is unnecessary." On DE9: Closer to the Edit, it sounds like the "unnecessary" pile is bigger than ever. Though hardly the ambitious John Cage moment that was the opaque (and virtually beat-free) Consumed album, DE9 is stripped to the point of true digital dub while still maintaining a dance-floor directed pulse.
Following the trail blazed by the first Decks, EFX & 909 mix, this recording is sparse, cool, linear - the usual adjectives regularly applied to Hawtin's recorded output. But the news lies in how he earned them this time around. Utilizing a new DJ technology developed with partner John Acquaviva and N2IT Development, the program Final Scratch allows the manipulation of digital files via a most analog trigger: a turntable. When those files are minute dots and loops sampled from a wide variety of already deep techno tracks, the results are the textbook definition of "something else." So instead of full-blown tracks, tiny bytes of, say, Carl Craig's "The Climax" and Hawtin's own "Spastik" (under the Plastikman moniker) float like ghosts in and out of the mesmerizing mix.
Listen closely, and one might even detect that Hawtin is loosening up a bit, occasionally exhibiting flashes of his rarely seen penchant for the groovier side of the beat. Armed with his perpetually progressive mindset, Hawtin continues to showcase why he's become one of techno's leading lights into the future.

Really cool cd.......2005-05-03
Possibly one of the greatest.......2005-02-28
Subtlety is one of the strongest points of this CD. Unlike almost every other mix CD, it's almost impossible to tell when he starts mixing from one track into the next. He rarely ever lets the music go for over 30 seconds without tweaking the beats here, adding a kick drum there. The beats ebb and flow with a syncopated, organic brilliance. The music takes on a life of it's own.
For the full effect, listen to the CD on high-quality headphones, this way you will be able to hear every quite little nuance.
Richie Hawtin is a genius, and this is one of his many masterpieces. It does NOT get any better than this.
