uneven addition to the series.......2005-06-14

Starting things off with the phenomenal junior mix of Void is setting high expectations that aren't quite lived up to. Motion Blur is a light, airy track that seems out of place sandwiched between the previous track and the dark Johnny vicious mix of Veronica. I could do without the bleeps and blips remix of Killer. But after that we get a series of peak hour vocal tracks ending with Loleatta Holloway. Some annoying, funky style house songs follow, and surprisingly, a trio of trance tracks end the set, the best being the cover of the new wave classic "Send me an Angel." Just as with volume 2, this set is wishy washy, seeming to try and cover all genres of dance, and leaving fans of each style wishing for more. Track times:

TOO MUCH "X".......2000-08-21

John Blair's first "Party" CD with David Knapp is an absoulute killer dance CD. This one seems to hold out a lot of promise, but quickly lapses into the sort of kitsch and corniness that makes country & western sound like music for intellectuals, by comparison.

Most songs start out with great latin, breakbeat or funk grooves, but soon bog down with the introduction of showtune and gimmicky 'hooks'. Maybe it was a great experience if you were out on the dance floor that night, with modern technology delivering the proper brain chemistry and sensory stimulation. But on CD, without that particular ambience and altered blood chemistry to accompany the listening experience, it just doesn't work.

It used to be a standing joke that Rock Against Drugs was just air guitars and lip synching. And certainly that great rock acts were at their peak when they were heavily into drugs (even though those drugs left them destroyed afterward). Think about it: when did Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart Aerosmith, Van Halen, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, etc. all do their best work?

But dance stuff requires a bit more concentration and a clearer head to be done right. Timing, pacing, and knowing what segues well (and being able to execute it right) are critical. Sadly, this mix seems to suffer -- was the DJ mixing work & pleasures; getting high on the crowd's supply?

While there is nothing 'bad' here that makes you want to change CD's, nor anything that makes you want to skip immediately to the next tune, this CD is just not up to the standards one would expect from a John Blair effort. Truth be told, it's better than most DJ's are capable of (of course too many DJ's are untalented hacks hired by clubs because they'll work cheap, not because they are actually skilled).

Get JOHN BLAIR PARTY Volume 1 (DJ David Knapp), and wait for Volume 4. My guess is that New York best DJ's are better than this CD would suggest.

Simply the Best!!!.......2000-07-22

This 3rd CD in the John Blair Party is in my opinion the best. DJ (Monty) Q really knows how to mix those club favorites. This is very high-energy music, with trance, and Latin-favored mixes. It just keeps getting better and better with each new song. Of course, my favorite's are "I'm in Love" by Veronica, and "Share My Joy" by GTS featuring Loleatta Holloway. If you can't be at your favorite club this weekend, this is the next best thing. DJ Q is the DJ to watch out for!!!!!!! Looking forward to the next John Blair Party CD.

This edition lags behind by far.......2000-07-03

This third installment in the John blair series has fallen off considerably in the selection of house music chosen. All of the songs on this compilation tease the listener with a possible hope at a serious progression into deep house music, but then lags off into weak monotonous vocals that sound soft throughout. The only song on this compilation that is worthy of your stereo is The Vicious Remix of Veronica's "I'm in Love."

As for the rest of this compilation...it just falls off sadly. For those of you who are used to the pounding Manhattan beats of the first installment, stay away from this one.

Still Going Strong.......2000-06-21

Monty Q's contribution to the John Blair series is a fine one indeed. The Vasquez remix of Catapila's "Void" starts it with a bang. It moves fluidly from hard house to lighter trance and back again, without losing energy. The middle chunk of the CD -- "Set Me Free," "Share My Joy," and "Sound of Bamboo" -- is the most rewarding.
